It started to rain but neither of them took notice as they found themselves lost in each other’s gaze. Charlene closed her eyes tightly as she waited for the magic moment. Seconds passed, then minutes and still nothing happened. She did not feel his lips on hers and when she opens her eyes, Edison was in front of her with a big smirk on his face. She turned crimson red as she turns away from him. She was somewhat relief but at the same time also disappointed. Why didn’t he kiss her? It turns out that Edison was only leaning in to take out some leafs that were caught in her hair when they fell into the pond. Charlene was embarrassed as Edison started teasing her, not realizing the impact he has on her. Unable to hold back her tears anymore, she ran out from the shade that they were both standing under. Edison was caught off by surprise but quickly chased after her. Charlene could hear Edison’s cries but she did not stop, in fact it made her run even faster. Edison managed to grab hold of her but they lost their balance and rolled down into some bushes. Charlene did not dare to breathe as Edison rolled on top of her, their lips just inches away. He started to move the strands of hair from her face. This time when it was least expected, Edison leaned in and gave her the most passionate kiss ever. Charlene wanted to fight back but instead found herself returning his kiss.
Ed: *pulls away* I’m sorry….
Char: *blush* It’s okay.
Ed: I can’t control myself anymore, Char. Every time I’m with you, all I could think of is to kiss you. I really don’t know what’s going on with me… I’m just so…confused.
Char: *admits softly* Me too. Me too. That was why I was so upset when you didn’t kiss me just now….
Ed: I wanted to but I held it back…. I thought I could control myself but then this has to happen…I think I’m in love with you, Char.
Char: *thinks* I love you too, Ed. So much that no words could even begin to describe it. No! I can’t be so selfish! What about Gill? I can’t betray my best friend! *looks away* We can’t do this, Ed. What about Gill?
Ed: I don’t know what’s wrong, Char. I thought Gill is the one for me but why am I having these feelings for you? I just don’t know if I’ve made the correct choice….
Char: You’ve made your choice, Ed. You chose Gill.
Ed: Is it possible for a person to fall in love with two girls at one time? I think it is because I’m in love with the both of you….
Char: *giggles* Ed! You know that’s impossible!
Ed: What about the kiss? Don’t tell me you didn’t feel anything from that kiss!
Char: Look, there has to be an explanation. I’m probably your…err…infatuation. You know, you once had a crush on me and all that….
Ed: But that kiss….
Char: *cuts in* Let’s pretend none of this happen okay?
Ed: But how could you…
Char: It’s for the best, Ed. Please don’t ever bring this up again. We can’t do this to Gill….
Ed: *sits up* I’m sorry….
Char: Look, don’t kill yourself over this. It’s really okay. You’re probably confused now but deep down in your heart, you’ve already got your answer. That’s why you chose her in the first place. You and Gill both shared a special thing together; don’t spoil it because of me.
Ed: Did you ever love me, Char?
Char: *lies* I thought I never will stop loving you but after that kiss, I guess I’m way over you. I didn’t feel anything….I guess those feelings just fade away. I just got over you…Now can we please stop talking about this?
Ed: You’re lying….
Char: Ed! Don’t make this harder than it already is!
Ed: I feel so much love in that kiss, Char! I know those feelings haven’t fade away….I know you still love me. I can feel it.
Char: *cries angrily* So what? So what if I still love you? Are you going to leave Gill for me? Are you going to betray her love and trust? No, Ed! I know you won’t because you love her and you love her more than me!
Ed: I’m so sorry, Char….
Char: *hits him repeatedly* You know how hard it is? To be so close with someone you love and yet you cannot have? To see someone you love so much love someone else? To encourage the one you love to love someone else? Why are you doing this to me, Ed? Why? I’ve beginning to let you go and you have to make things become more complicated than it already is?
Ed: *hugs her* I’m so sorry. I didn’t know. How could I have been so blind? Why didn’t you tell me?
Char: *sobs* Same reason why you didn’t tell me…. I’ve always loved you, Ed. From the first day I met you but it’s all too late now, Ed. It’s all too late….
They hugged each other tightly and cried, letting the rain wash their tears away. At that moment, they felt as if the Heavens are crying with them. They remained in that position for a few minutes; no words were exchanged between them. Edison was heart broken and was shocked at Charlene’s confession. How could he not know? All this while, they were in love with each other. Realizing how much Charlene had suffered because of him just tears him apart. No matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t find any explanation for his feelings for Charlene. It’s not that he didn’t love Gillian because he does, more than anyone could ever imagine. But at the same time, he felt the same for Charlene too. It may sound silly but he loved both the girls equally. However, he knew that one of them is bound to be hurt by him in the end because he knew he would have to choose only one of them.
Charlene let her tears flow freely as she collapsed in Edison’s arms. She could no longer hold back her feelings and although she felt guilty, she was relieved because she felt as if a huge burden has been lifted off her heart. She had kept her feelings for Edison hidden for too long now. A lot of questions were running through her head but she pushed them all away. She felt safe and protected just being in Edison’s arms and wished that the moment would last forever. She knew that she would have to come back to reality soon and that meant she will lose him again. That’s why she’s appreciating every moment of it. However, their quiet moment was interrupted when Edison’s cell rang. It is from Gillian. At that moment, Edison immediately let go of Charlene, feeling as if he just had a wake up call.
*On the line*
Gill: Ed! Where are you guys? It’s raining so heavily!
Ed: We’re still in the zoo…
Gill: What? I thought the zoo close as 6! It’s nearly 7pm now!
Ed: *thinks* What? I’ve been hugging Charlene for so long? Why am I feeling this way? Why?
Gill: Hello? Ed? You’re there?
Ed: Yeah, sorry. I guess we didn’t realize the time…
Gill: Are you sure you’re okay? You sound different
Ed: We’ll be back soon. We’ll talk later okay?
Gill: Yeah. Love you.
Ed: Love you too.
*End of line*
Without saying a thing, he took out his jacket and wrapped it around her. Charlene could help but to smile as he helped her up, the whole time his hand on top of her head, as if preventing her from getting wet and the other hand around her shoulders. They got into trouble when the guards recognized them as the ones that were playing in the pond earlier on. Both tried their best to explain their way out and finally, they got off with a warning. They laughed at their narrow escape as they run towards Edison’s car. However, they became quiet again once they’re in the car because both knew that they had to go back to reality soon. Edison and Gillian shared something special and thus he wasn’t ready to give that up. He felt guilty but he knew he could not lead Charlene on knowing that she deserves someone so much better than him.
Ed: Umm…Char…
Char: It’s okay. I know.
Ed: I’m really sorry…
Char: *puts her fingers on Ed’s lips* It’s okay. I understand.
Ed: I…
Char: *smiles* Thank you, Ed. You’ve given more than I could ever asked for. It’s enough and I’m happy to know that in your heart, I have a place too and that you once loved me too.
Ed: I’m so sorry for not being able to give you anything, Char. I wish I could but Gill….
Char: You better make Gill happy or else I’ll be coming after you! You have nothing to be guilty about, Ed because you didn’t do anything wrong. All these feelings you’re having for me now, just push them away because now, the one you love is Gill.
Ed: I just wish there’s something I could do for you, Char…
Char: You sure can! Just promise me that you will not let this ruin our friendship okay? You don’t have to worry about me because I’ll get over you sooner or later! In this life, you’re blessed with two girls. One to be the one who receives your love and the other, your friendship. I am that friend who will be with you through thick and thin and the one that will support you even if the whole world turns against you, Ed.
Ed: Char…
Char: *cuts in* Hey, don’t worry so much! I’m going to find someone for me, Ed. Don’t underestimate the power of Charlene Choi!
Ed: I hope you will find someone that makes you happy, Char. Because really, you deserve so much more.
Char: *smiles* I will. I don’t believe that I can’t find someone when you can find Gillian!
They decided never to bring up this subject again but really, how long could they hide their feelings? The whole ride back home was in silence as the both of them were lost in their own thoughts. The kiss that they both shared still lingers freshly in their minds. Both knew that that kiss meant a lot more than just a friendly kiss. They could feel the love, the passion and most of all, the longing to be in each other’s arms. Just thinking about it brought tears to Charlene’s eyes but she quickly wiped them away before Edison could see it. Both were suffering in silence because they love one another and yet they knew they could never be together.
*Gill’s house*
Gill: You’re both drenched wet and muddy! What happened?
Char: *quickly* Ed will tell you. I’m going upstairs to change. Good Night, guys.
Gill: What’s up with her? It seems as if she’s running away from me!
Ed: *smiles* I think she’s running from me….
Gill: Really? What did you do to her?
Ed: *panics* I…err…umm…
Gill: *laughs* I was only joking! Anyway, why are you both drenched wet and muddy? You could fall sick!
Ed: We were caught under the rain and we fell…Long story.
Gill: You better head home and dry up then. The flu bug is really common nowadays…
Ed: *suddenly serious* I love you, Gill…
Gill: *laughs* I love too. Don’t get all mushy on me….I just don’t want you to fall sick so that I don’t have to baby-sit you!
Ed: I just want you to know that no matter what happens, I’ll always love you. Always.
Gill: What’s wrong? You’re scaring me…
Ed: *hugs her* Nothing. I just want to tell you that….
Gill: You better not cheat behind my back or something like that! I’m going to murder you!
Ed: You would?
Gill: *laughs* Why are you so serious tonight? Unless…Nah, I know you wouldn’t cheat on me. I trust you. Right?
Ed: *smiles uneasily* Right.
Gill: *laughs* It’ll be too weird anyway! Just imagine you and Charlene?
Ed: *force a laugh* Yeah, that would be funny. Anyway, I’m tired…We’ll talk tomorrow, okay? *walks away*
Gill: *pouts* Hey! You’re forgetting something!
Ed: Huh?
Gill: *points to her cheek* My goodnight kiss!
Ed: *kisses her* Goodnight. Umm…take care of Charlene. We were under the rain for quite some time…
Gill: Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of her! Goodnight! You better go home and have a good night sleep.
Although Gillian didn’t show it, she was worrying like crazy inside. Edison seems really far away although he’s standing right in front of her. It’s as if something is really bothering him. He always gave her a goodnight kiss before leaving but tonight, she actually had to ask for it. His kiss seemed half-heartedly making Gillian even more worried. She began to feel insecure and wondered what had happened between Charlene and him. They both went out happily this morning but somehow, they seemed distant when they came back. Gillian tried to question Charlene about it but she claimed that she was too tired and is going to bed early, leaving Gillian with a lot of questions but with no answers. Did they have a fight? Or is it something much worst than that? Something beyond her own imagination? Like…… the both of them falling in love?
