Gillian was at her usual place, the bench under the beautiful oak tree. It was peaceful and very few students knew of this place. In fact, she chanced upon it when she got lost on her first day here. Ever since then, it became her hideaway where she would come here to study or to eat. She did not have any friends and that was because she chose not to.
She was labeled as a retard in her college because she never answers back when she was spoken to and she would run away whenever someone wants to be her friend. No one knew the reason why, in fact none of them were interested to find out why. They simply just crossed her out from their list of friends, which was perfectly fine for Gillian. She definitely did not want to lose someone she loves again.
“Hey you”
Gillian looked up to see a handsome figure standing in front of her. She recognized him as the new student who has recently transferred from Canada. She had to admit that he is really good looking and even though he has a crooked smile, it looks really cute on him. No doubt, she was attracted to him and under normal circumstances; she would have been flattered that he’s talking to her now. However, that would be impossible. She believed that she was cursed and there will never be a good ending for those who are close to her. Gillian avoided making any eye contact with that guy and quickly stuff her last piece of bread in her mouth.
“Gee…you’re going to choke on that!”
Silent.
“ Are you deaf?”
Silent.
“Or are you mute? You must be both, I think”
Silent.
“Well, since you cannot hear me…. I think you’re really beautiful!“
Silent.
Gillian was not at all amused by his humor. He probably used that tactic to get the way he wants with the girls. No, Gillian wasn’t going to fall into his trap or rather she could not afford to. With her mouth full, she quickly packed her stuffs. She wanted to get away from him as soon as she can. However, just as she was about to get up, the guy grabbed her wrist and pulled her back.
“Let me go” Gillian said, quite coldly.
“Wow! So you can talk!“ he replied, quite amused.
Silent.
“Great! Now you’ve become mute again! Tell me your name and I’ll let you go“
Silent.
Gillian tried again to get away from the guy but his hold was too strong for her. She turned and at that moment, their eyes locked. Gillian could feel her heart beat picking up its pace as she finds herself lost in his gaze.
“He has really beautiful eyes” Gillian thought to herself but quickly pushed those thoughts away. She tried to struggle again but that has only got him to tighten his grip on her hand. Finally, she gave in, defeated.
“I’m Gillian” she replied, curtly.
“And I’m Edison. Nice to meet you. You can call me, Ed” he introduced with a smile.
“Now, can you let me go?” Gillian asked frustrated.
“What if I say no?” he teases her. “How about a kiss first?”
Edison leaned in close to her and their lips were just mere inches away. However, before he could get any closer, Gillian bit his hand so that he will let go of her and when he did, she kicked his leg, hard on his knees. Without wasting a minute, she quickly ran away without turning back. Edison hopped around with one leg, rubbing the part where she had kicked him. He collapsed on the bench and that’s when he realized that his hand is still red with her teeth marks on it.
At first, he was angry but soon he was smiling when he thought of their weird encounter. It is his first day here and he still couldn’t get used to the environment and the people. He missed his friends and teachers back in Canada. He just kept walking, unsure of the directions and before he knew it, he was lost.
That’s when he noticed a girl, sitting on the bench. In one hand, she was holding a bread and on the other, a book. She was giggling to herself as she was reading, obviously over something funny in the book. He was intrigued by her child-like innocence and the smile that she had on could seriously melt anyone’s heart especially his. He stood there for a while, just admiring her. Finally, his curiosity got better of him and he ventured out from his hiding place, hoping to get to know her.
She is really something so different from any other girls he has ever come across with. He was just attracted to her, it was as if she’s the honey and he’s the bee.
She is really beautiful and yet he could see sadness in her eyes.
She is strong and yet she is weak.
She seems confident and yet at the same time she’s not.
He was eager to know more about her and hopefully to be able to help her out from her shell. She is mysterious but that made Edison even more curious.
“What’s wrong with her?” Edison thought to himself.
Gillian ran as fast as could from Edison, her heart beating wildly in her chest. Her face were flushed, not from running but rather because she was blushing. They were so close that she could feel his breath on her face and smell the cologne that he has on. The smell reminded her of something or rather someone to be specific. It reminded her of her boyfriend, Shawn.
It’s been a long time since she has ever felt this way about anyone…ever since Shawn left her. Tears began to stream down her cheeks again as she thought about Shawn. He was everything to her until that cancer took him away from her. She could still remember the hospital smell and how he slowly slipped away from her. No matter how hard she tried to hold on to him, he just slipped out from her grasp and was gone forever. There was nothing she could do to bring him back.
“Shawn…” Gillian sobbed sadly.
