Edison looked up into the sky filled with beautiful stars as he lay down on the grass. A smile formed in his lips when he spotted Gillian’s Star, the brightest star amongst others. Just like Gillian, the star outshone the rest, making it very special and beautiful. Memories of her began flashing before his eyes and he thought of his beautiful, Gillian Chung.

*Flashback Starts*

”I wish that we stay like this forever” Gillian whispered, during one of their dates.

“What do you mean?” Edison asked, giving a peck on her forehead.

“To feel so warm in your embrace. To love you more than I love myself. To watch the stars together. Just the two of us” Gillian explained.

“Of course we will! Our love will never come to an end” Edison promised her.

”There will be a meteor shower end of this year…promise me that we’ll watch it together?” she asked, smiling up at him.

“I promise. There’s no one else I would rather watch it together with than you. I love you, Gillian” he said.

“I know. You’ve told me like a dozen times” she replied, hugging him tight.

“And here you are still doubting whether we’ll stay together forever” he playfully accused her.

“Everyone dies someday, Edison Chen. You’re not superman…. wait, even superman died” she said, giggling.

“Since when did superman die?” he asked, curiously.

“Christopher Reeves, remember?” she said, refreshing his memory.

“That’s just an actor! Since when did you see Superman die in any of his movies?” Edison retaliated.

“Christopher Reeves is superman so superman is dead now” Gillian insisted, stubbornly.

“Then how do you explain Smallville’s Tom Welling?” Edison teased her.

“He’s well….he’s….he’s the fake superman!” Gillian replied, cleverly.

*Flashback Ends*

Edison let out a giggle by himself when he thought about the little’ fight’ that they had back then. A few couple looked at him strangely and Edison quickly mouthed an apology. They must have thought that he was crazy, giggling by himself. Maybe he is crazy for he is going crazy from missing her too much. He had made her a promise before that they would watch the meteor shower together but instead here he is, all by himself. It has been two years since she left but he had never forgotten about his promise to her.

Just then a shooting star appears and he quickly clasped his hands together and made a wish.

He wish to see her again

To see her smile

To hear her voice

To laugh with her

Even if it was for one last time

*Flashback Starts*

“Edison, I think you better come to the hospital” Mr Chung said, on the other line.

Edison rushed to the hospital, fearing for the worst. Although Mr Chung had not said much on the phone, from the tone of his voice, Edison knew that it wasn’t good news. He blamed himself silently for leaving the hospital. He shouldn’t have left Gillian alone, he had promised her that he would fight the remaining 55 % with her. As he sped to the hospital, he prayed hard for Gillian to be safe and most importantly, still alive.

“How is she?” he asked, once he reaches the hospital.

“She’s in the ICU” replied Mrs Chung softly, who suddenly looked 10 years older.

“How was the operation?” Edison questioned them.

“The doctors have managed to take out the tumor in her brain” explained Mr Chung.

“That’s good! That could only mean one thing, that the operation was successful!” Edison said, excitedly.

“Yes, it was but….” started Mr Chung.

“But what? Is Gillian alright?” Edison asked, panicking.

“She’s…she’s paralyzed from waist down” said Mr Chung before breaking into tears.

*Flashback Ends*

Edison remembered how his heart nearly stopped when he heard the news but it was nothing like Gillian’s reaction when the doctors told her after she regained consciousness. She started crying and screaming as they tried to calm her down. She didn’t want to live the rest of her life being a crippled. In the end, the doctors had no choice but to give her some tranquilizer. There were tears in her eyes as she slowly fell back to sleep.

Since then, she was not the same anymore. She had become withdrawn and refused to speak to anyone. It hurt Edison so much to watch her slipping away from him and worst, he couldn’t do anything about it. It was as if Gillian has given up living, as if she is only living in an empty shell. Gillian also started pushing Edison away by screaming whenever he entered her room. Although she never said it, Edison knew that she hated him for making her fight this battle. She hated him for making her go through this pain.

Edison wished that he could take away the pain and if he could transplant his legs for her, he would have done so. He went to the hospital every single day but would only go into Gillian’s room when she’s fast asleep, as he did not want to upset her. He loved her so much but Gillian was blinded by her own anger and pain that she pushed away the only one person who truly loves her.

*Flashback Starts*

“Where is Gillian Chung, the patient in Room 25?” asked Edison, panicking when he found the room empty one day.

“Ms Chung have checked out today” the nurse informed him.

“What? Are you sure?” Edison asked, surprised.

“Yes. Her parents picked her up this morning” the nurse replied before walking away.

Edison was surprised as the Chungs have not told him anything about Gillian being discharged today. He tried calling Gillian’s home but no one picked up. Feeling uneasy, he ran out of the hospital and drove all the way to Gillian’s place. He rang the bell several times but no one answered the door. He screamed for Gillian’s name over and over again but no one answered him.

“They’ve moved, young man” an elderly lady told him over the fence.

“What do you mean?” asked Edison, shocked.

“They’re leaving this country, that’s why they’ve sold off this house” the lady explained.

“Do you know what time they’re leaving?” Edison questioned her.

“I’m sorry but all I know is that they’re leaving today. Here, this is what Gillian asked me to pass to you” she replied, handing him the box.

Edison muttered quick thanks before speeding all the way to the airport. On his way there, he opened the box only to find the 12 Christmas presents that he had given to Gillian and that truly broke his heart to pieces. He searched all over the airport, calling out for Gillian’s name. He did not care that people were staring at him as he ran around like a maniac. Finally, he went over to the information counter but unfortunately, they refused to reveal the details of Gillian’s flight. He couldn’t find her; it was as if she had disappeared into thin air. Edison collapsed on his knees and cried his heart out.

*Flashback Ends*

“Edison” a familiar voice breaks him away from his thoughts.

It was that same angelic voice that he had missed so much. He never thought that he would hear it again. Edison looked up slowly and his eyes rest on those familiar purple mittens that he has given to her. He stood up quickly and their eyes met. Her beautiful big brown eyes were filled with tears as Edison bent down and wiped away the tears with his finger. He wasn’t sure if this is just a dream but whatever it is, he didn’t want to let her go again.

“Gillian! I missed you so much!” Edison cried, hugging her tight.

“I’m so sorry, Edison” Gillian whispered, tearfully.

“Why did you leave me? Are you afraid that I would push you away just because you’re paralyzed? Do you really think I’m such a person?” Edison asked, feeling hurt.

“No. The reason I left was because I knew you wouldn’t leave me” Gillian admitted, softly.

“What do you mean?” Edison asked, surprised.

“It wasn’t fair to you, Edison. I would only be a burden to you. That’s why I kept pushing you away and yet every single time, you came back for me” she explained.

“You could never be a burden to me, Gillian. I think I’m the burden for you because I need you so much. Without you, I’m just lost and helpless. Please don’t leave me again” Edison pleaded.

“Are you sure you won’t regret this?” Gillian questioned him.

“There are many things that I regret doing but loving you is the proudest thing I’ve ever done. Of course I won’t regret” Edison assured her.

“It’s been two years…do you really think we can continue from where we left?” she asked, curiously.

“I never stopped loving you, Gillian. You were always in my heart” Edison whispered as he carried her out from her wheelchair.

“I really thought I could live without you but I was in a total mess. I miss you so much and if Jo had not kept me constantly updated with your news, I would have given up a long time ago. That’s how I know where to find you” she said, smiling.

“Wow! Is she spying on me?” he asked, looking around cautiously.

“No! You told her that you would be here during this time of the year to wait for me, remember?” Gillian reminded him, giggling.

“I can’t believe that Jolin knew where you were all this time! She should really consider being an actress, she could win herself an Oscar” cried Edison, looking upset.

“Don’t blame her. I made her swear on Jay’s life that she wouldn’t tell you” Gillian replied, giggling.

“Hey, look! Meteor shower!” Edison cried suddenly, pointing to the skies.

“It’s so beautiful” Gillian, gasped in awe.

“Just as beautiful as you” he continued, kissing her lightly on her cheeks.

“Thanks for watching it with me” Gillian whispered, as she snuggled close to him.

“It was a promise I made to you, remember?” Edison said.

“I love you, Edison” she sighed softly.

"Look, that's your star. I named it after you" Edison informed her, pointing it to Gillian's Star.

"It's so bright and beautiful" she replied, happy to have a star named after her.

“Why did you wait so long to come back, Gillian?” Edison asked her, after a moment of silence.

“Because I didn’t have the guts to. I really didn’t know how to face you again especially after what I’ve put you through. I was trying so hard to protect you, not realizing that I was only hurting you more. I’m really sorry to put you through so much pain but I suddenly realize that I could no longer wait and let you slipped away” she apologized again.

“You’re super slow in realizing things aren’t you? Two years! Others would have moved on and get a girlfriend or even married with a child by now!” Edison playfully teased her, to help her release her tension.

“Hey!” she cried but quickly came up with a good come back.

“Yeah, like you said, others would have gotten married or have a girlfriend. I was just making sure I’m making the right choice since you seemed to be unwanted! No girls are interested to be your girlfriend, let a lone your wife!” she continued, laughing.

“Gillian Chung Yan Tung!” cried Edison, pretending to be angry.

“Yes? Edison Chen Kwoon Hei?” Gillian replied, laughing.

“Why you….” started Edison but Gillian stopped him by kissing him on the lips.

“That should be enough for an apology” Gillian said, smiling cheekily.

“Wow! I wouldn’t mind you making me angry every time” answered Edison, looking love struck.

“You wish!” replied Gillian, giggling.

“Then you’re not getting your 12 Christmas presents back!” Edison retaliates.

“Can I have them back, please?” Gillian pleaded, helplessly.

“Not until you kiss me” Edison said, laughing.

“Pah! You’re such a….” This time, before Gillian could finish her sentence, Edison leaned over and kissed her tenderly.

“…a good kisser” she finished, breathlessly making Edison doubled up in laughter.

Out of the blue

Out of the dark

Out of the corner

Out of nowhere

When it was least expected

An angel flutters by

But this time, she’s here to stay for good.
