Chapter 12

Donghae headed in to one of the living room areas of the mansion. At the moment everything looked normal so he assumed everything was normal. That is until he decided to head into the kitchen to find something to drink – even if it wasn’t needed. He stopped as he passed the entrance to the dining room. He quirked an eyebrow and peeked his head inside. A ton of scents assaulted his nose, but one stood out above the others. “Jessica.” He growled. What the hell was she doing here and how long ago was this? He decided to skip the kitchen and went in search of his brother.

After walking around nearly the entire mansion, Donghae was able to find Hyukjae standing on the second floor balcony overlooking the courtyard. He blinked, wondering what his older brother was so interesting by to be able to notice his presence. He stopped out on to the balcony.

“Yes Donghae-ah, I do know that you are there. But yes, my interesting is elsewhere.” He spoke, taking the younger vampire by surprise. Donghae walked closer, coming to stand next to Hyukjae. He looked from the elder – following his gaze to discover it was on his angel.

“You are just watching him?” He asked, wondering why all he was doing was staring. He looked up at Hyukjae. He elder smiled a bit, tearing his eyes away from the angel, who was currently gawking happily at all the different types of flowers in the garden.

“Yes, I’m just watching him. It’s something I think you should start doing.” Hyukjae’s expression turned serious as those words escaped his mouth. “You may discover a lot. For example; Sungmin likes the pink colored flowers over any of the others. Or that he does not like bees.” Donghae seemed taken aback by what his brother just said – looking down at the angel. He didn’t know those things about Sungmin. Hyukjae was right. He never just stopped and watched Sungmin. Hell, he barely knew anything about him. “We need to talk.”

That caught Donghae’s attention. He looked from Sungmin to Hyukjae. “Talk? What do you mean talk? What is there to talk about?” He asked.

“That damned ex of yours came back again. Which I’m sure you have already noticed. This is a problem you need to take care of. Not only is she annoying and obnoxious but she is dangerous as well. And do you know whose life is in danger, Sungmin’s. That is a problem, Donghae.” He answered, looking back down into the courtyard again. “She threatened his life. I am sure that bitch in hard headed still – even after all those years. So when I snapped at her I can guarantee it did not do a damn thing.”

Donghae thought for a moment. Inside he was cursing Jessica to no end. How dare she threaten his angel; again? What was it going to take to make her leave him and Sungmin alone? He looked up at Hyukjae. “She did not hurt him, did she?”

Hyukjae shook his head. “No, but she did try to seduce him. Poor kid was scared out of his mine. I happened to walk in just in time to send Sungmin away.” He sighed, leaning on the balcony railing. “It took everything I had not to rip out her throat. Next time she will not be so lucky. If, for any reason at all, you do not want that to happen, I suggest you do something about her and soon. I will not let her to continue putting Sungmin in harm’s way.” He pushed himself off of the railing and began to walk back inside. He stopped without looking back, however, and added, “And before you say anything, no, I do not have those types of feelings for your angel. But what I do still happen to have is humanity. Remember Donghae, we were once human.” With that said he walked inside, leaving Donghae to think about everything just spoken.

Donghae looked back down at Sungmin in the courtyard, watching as the angel sat down on the edge of the fountain and dip his fingers into the water. He may have been confused about his feelings. He may have been unsure about his sexuality. But one thing he was also sure of was that he was not going to let neither Jessica nor Taehyun harm his angel.

He looked up into the sky, gazing momentarily at the setting sun. It was quite a breathtaking sight. He looked down again, smiling a bit subconsciously at how the colors from the sunset danced on the water around Sungmin. That was also a breathtaking sight. “Sungmin, you should head inside soon. Night is approaching.” He spoke, and then walked into the mansion.

––

Sungmin looked up, hearing Donghae call his name. “Sungmin, you should head inside soon. Night is approaching.” Was he there watching him the whole time? He looked up at the sky, seeing the first stars of the night begin to appear against a purple tinted canvas. He gasped – he didn’t know the sunset looked this beautiful. He stood up, getting a better look as he moved around.

“Wow…” The angel trailed off. “The sunset looks amazing.” He looked up towards the balcony to see if Donghae was still watching the sunset as well, but looked at the ground with sadness. He already went inside. With one more glance at the sunset, he walked inside as well.

What he didn’t know was Donghae stood in the doorway of the balcony entrance. He looked from the sky to Sungmin as he walked inside. His expression softened. “Yes, I was watching the sunset with you…” He whispered and turned on his heel to walk back inside.

––

Later that day Donghae was wondering aimless around the mansion in search of something to keep himself occupied. He was hoping to just run into Sungmin so it wouldn’t seem as if he was actually searching for the angel. But so far, he has yet to find him. As he was walking passed the library a voice caught his ears. He stopped at the entrance, hidden from those who were inside.

He says Sungmin at the base of one of the large book shelves jumping up and down slightly. Donghae figured he was reaching for a book. He just watched as the angel struggled to reach it for a moment – that is until someone reached for the book and handed it to him. The vampires scowled, his expression turning to one of anger. “Taehyun…” He growled. If looks could kill the other vampire would be six feet under right now.

Sungmin looked up as an arm reached over him, grabbing the book he was attempting to get. He looked behind him, smiling lightly at Taehyun, who handed him the book. “Thank you, Taehyun hyung.” Donghae heard him say.

‘Hyung?!’ The younger vampire’s eyes widened. Since when did Sungmin call Taehyun hyung? Donghae didn’t know what was going on. But he had a feeling Taehyun was up to something. There is no way he would, out of nowhere, suddenly become nice to the angel. And Sungmin was far too naïve to notice it at all.

“You know, that is what the ladders are for.” Taehyun spoke, pointing to one across from the bookshelf they stood at. Sungmin placed a hand behind his neck and smiled cheekily.

“Yeah I do know. But I thought I’d try to reach it without the ladder because I didn’t feel like walking over there to get it.” He explained his excuse. Taehyun just raised an eyebrow.

“Wouldn’t that be, what the humans call, laziness?” He asked, with a hint of sarcasm in his voice. Sungmin just pouted and turned back to the bookshelf. Taehyun smirked, chuckling quietly to himself.

Donghae snarled lightly, quiet enough for only him to hear and walked away. Tonight would definitely be the night he talked to Sungmin. Back in the library Taehyun looked at the door. A smug look appeared on his face. He knew Donghae was just there moments ago. He knew these games he played were messing with his head. And that’s exactly what how he wanted it.

––

Sungmin was freshly bathed and dressed, nearly ready for bed. He sat, with crossed legs, on Donghae’s king sized bed. He was thinking about the fact that he literally slept with the vampire; as in shared the same bed. Earlier he thought about asking for his own room, but then a huge part of him didn’t want to sleep alone. Another part really wanted to continue sharing a bed with Donghae.

He looked up as said vampire walked into the room, immediately taking off his shirt as he did so. Sungmin blushed, quickly averting his eyes before Donghae noticed he was beginning to stare. “Sungmin-ah, we need to talk.”

Sungmin was taking by surprise. Donghae’s tone was emotionless and he spoke out of nowhere. He couldn’t help being caught off guard. “T-talk, talk about what?” He asked, trying not to sound nervous.

Donghae thought for a moment. He had to make this sound reasonable. He didn’t want to give Sungmin another reason to be angry with and avoid him. He walked into the bathroom room, changed quickly into a pair of pajama pants, and walked back out. “Yes, talk; about Taehyun.” Sungmin looked down, thinking for a moment. “Remember I had told you not to go near him; to stay away with him. Sungmin, are you beginning to trust him. You do not know what he is capable of.”

“Well he can’t possibly be any worse than you.” Sungmin spoke. Donghae, would was facing his closet, flinched at the angel’s cold tone. He took a deep breath – not wanting to snap at him. “He seems perfectly fine to me.” He crossed his arms.

Donghae sighed in frustration, turning around. “That is because he is playing you. That he is playing with you. Can you not tell it is an act?” He couldn’t believe Sungmin was this oblivious. The angel frowned, uncrossing his arms.

“So you’re telling me that just because he’s being nice to me it has to be an act? Is it wrong for him to be so nice?” He defended. Donghae was beginning to lose his temper.

“Yes!” He shouted. “Taehyun has never been nice; to anyone. Hell, he is not even nice to us. We are only acquaintances who happen to steal this house together and share it. Nothing more. We are not friends. We never wore. We do not even like one another. Sungmin, I am far older than you. I have known Taehyun nearly five times longer than you have been alive. When he is up to something I know it.”

Sungmin climbed off of the bed, clenching his fists. “Must you always be right?! Is that what this is? That of course you know everything. Well maybe you’re wrong! It happens. You don’t have to be right about everything. You’re so controlling and selfish. I may belong to you, but that doesn’t mean I will like you. And at this rate, I’ll hate you by the end of the week.”

Donghae didn’t know why, but that last sentence made his heart ache. Hate was such a strong feeling, once he didn’t want directed at him. He didn’t know what to do – he never intended this to turn into an argument. “Sungmin-ah, I am only saying this for your own good. Taehyun is not someone you wanted to associate with. He tried to rape you for crying out loud! Doesn’t that mean something?”

Sungmin didn’t answer him, only glared. “You know what Donghae, the first step in being concerned about someone else's well-being is actually caring about them.” That was the only thing he said as he ran out of the room.

“Sungmin!” Donghae called after him. But instead of following after, he slumped onto the bed and laid his head in his hands. “Nice job, Donghae. Nice job.”
