Chapter 11

“I was seriously breaking up with Lily at the time,” Raymond insists, scanning through the rows of magazines by Ron’s bed, “Michelle caught me at the wrong time.”

“Yeah, if you weren’t stepping on two boats at once, she probably couldn’t have gotten the chance to catch you,” Edison points out, as he stands by Ron’s collection of model cars.

“Look, I regretted it, and I fixed it,” Raymond makes up for, “As soon as Ron smooth things out for me with Michelle, then we can just forget about the whole thing.”

Not hearing a response from Ron, both Edison and Raymond look over to Ron, who seems to be lost in thought as he sat in front of the black screen computer.

“Ron,” Edison calls out.

Snapping out of thought, Ron turns over to look at them, “What?”

“When do you plan on explaining things out for me with Michelle,” Raymond gets to the subject. “And what is with this Benny guy she was comparing me with?”

“Don’t know, never heard of him,” Ron admits.

“Probably an ex,” Edison suggests, “Probably not over him either from the sound of how Michelle reacted.”

“Really?” Ron responds, seemingly to not care, as he grabs a magazine from the computer desk and starts going through it.

Seeing Ron’s attitude toward the comment, Edison sets down a model car, “You seem pretty concern about your girlfriend,” he says sarcastically.

“You are such a loser, reading a woman’s magazine,” Raymond cuts in on the topic, as he picked out a magazine from the many.

Ron, looking over at the magazine Raymond was holding in hand, “That’s not mine, it’s Leila’s.”

Edison, walking up to Raymond and taking the magazine into hand, “Leila’s?” he asks, as he looks through the magazine.

“Why would Leila be in your bedroom?” Raymond questions.

“We were just going through some of the designing books I have,” Ron defends.

“Hey, check this out,” Edison says aloud, as he continues to read from the magazine, “Here’s some sort of mode test for guys on meeting their type of girls.”

“So how is your relationship with Rain going?” Leila asks, as Edison and her stand behind the counter of the Leila’s kitchen, cutting up the vegetables for salad.

“What do you mean, other than that she is still one of my best friend’s girlfriend?” Edison answers sarcastically.

“Edison, don’t give up,” Leila says with assurance, “There’s always still hope, you just have to believe in it.”

Edison, though doubtful, eases Leila’s care, “Yeah, I guess. So have you decided what to do for Rain’s birthday party?” he asks, changing the subject.

“Ooh, Ron suggested a cabin trip in Tin Seung,” Leila says, excited, “What do you think of that?”

Edison smiles, “I think you and-“ before he could finish, Rain, Michelle, Raymond, and Ron comes through the door.

“Hey,” Leila gives them a general greeting, “Back already?”

“Yuppers,” Rain says, plopping down onto the sofa.

“Buying a few groceries isn’t all that hard,” Michelle teases, as she sits down next to Rain, opposite side of Raymond.

“Need any help,” Ron offers, walking up to Leila, as Edison stood next to her.

Leila smiles acknowledging, “No, it’s all right, we’re almost done.”

“So what have you guys been gossiping about while we were gone?” Rain accuses, catching Edison off guard.

“Oh… uh… we… were just talking about modes,” Edison manages to sputter out, as Leila looks at him in confusion, and Raymond and Ron looks at him in surprise.

“I’m sorry, what?” Rain questions.

“Okay, so say I have good news and bad news,” Edison starts, “which one do you girls want to hear first?”

Without even having to think about it, Michelle answers, “Bad news,” in a matter-of-fact way.

“Good news,” Leila answers in correspondence, sure of her response.

After a quick but obvious moment, Rain assumes, “None.”

“Explanations please,” Raymond asks, questioning their response.

“Well I would want the good news first, ‘cause then that’s the first thing to comfort me when I hear the bad news,” Leila explains.

“I don’t agree,” Michelle inputs. “If you hear the bad news first, you can just get it over with and then just have the good news to deal with.”

Seeing that Rain did not give an explanation, Edison asks, “Rain, how about you?”

“Yeah, your answer wasn’t exactly an answer,” Ron points out.

“Of course it is,” Rain defends. “If I had to hear the bad news in order to hear the good news, then I’d rather not hear about it at all.”

At that comment, Raymond immediately focuses his full attention on Rain.

“How come you had a sudden urge to go for a walk tonight,” Rain asks Raymond, as she stops their walk and stands looking at him by the ocean’s dock.

Raymond smiles teasingly, “I thought spending some one on one time with you would be nice.”

Rain chuckles, “So, you’re getting sick and tired of Michelle and them?” she jokes, adding, “So does that mean sooner or later, you would get sick and tired of me?”

Guiltily caught, Raymond looks at Rain, “Rain, this afternoon, you said that if you were to hear good news along with bad news, you’d rather not hear any at all… do you really mean that?”

Rain looks at Raymond, sensing his unease, but unable to grasp the feeling, “You know, Michelle and Leila always say that I’m a very indecisive person, but I never thought true of that.”

Raymond looks at Rain, seeing and seemingly learning something very different about her.

Rain smiles at Raymond’s seriousness, “I’m a really simple person, I don’t want to hear or know about things that will hurt me, so if I choose to not know, I’ll be happier that way.”

Hearing Rain’s viewpoint, Raymond smiles slightly, “I think I know what not to do now,” he tells her.

“Do what?” Rain asks curiously.

“Nothing,” Raymond smiles mischievously at Rain, and turns her around to hug her from behind, as they both look out into the dark-lit ocean.
