(At Fion’s/Lik Hang’s place)
FION: (opens the door, turns around) Lik Hang? You told me to return earlier, what do you want to tell me?
LIK HANG: It’s about you.
FION: (bewildered) Me?
LIK HANG: I saw you just now.
FION: (still not sensing anything wrong, and putting on a smile) Why didn’t you approach me then? You were busy?
LIK HANG: You were with a guy.
FION: (realizes what is wrong, stuttering) Emmm… that’s Jerry… Zoe’s boyfriend, I’ve introduce you to him before… I arranged to meet them today.
LIK HANG: (solemn look) Is it him or them?
FION: (guilty conscience) Him.
LIK HANG: (before she could finish) Don’t lie… There are serious repercussions involved…
FION: (gasping) Yes, I’ve arranged to meet Jerry.
LIK HANG: That’s it!
FION: (trying to lie blatantly) There is nothing between us! What are you having this attitude?
LIK HANG: (coldly) Search your conscience!
FION: (haven’t calmed down) Since you’ve guessed it, why are you still probing me?
LIK HANG: I just want to know the truth… What more have you to explain?
FION: (gasping for air) Do you know… You treat me so coldly?
LIK HANG: (rebukes angrily) For what??? Are you trying to shift the blame to me? I’ve fully devoted to you, and planning for our future, yet you are saying I’ve neglected you? A man is licentious when he does this, but for a woman, it’s shamelessness…
FION: (sobbing and gasping for breath) Say that again!
LIK HANG: (coldly) We’ll annul our marriage!
FION: (shocked and shouting) Lik Hang!
LIK HANG: (angrily) You think it over. Look for me if you’ve decided to choose me! (runs upstairs)
FION: (shouts) Lik Hang! Lik Hang!
ZOE: (comes out from behind) What are you two quarrelling about? He was stomping up the stairs… And turned to glare at me fiercely… And you are crying like mad here… (senses something fishy) He… He found out about you and Jerry?
FION: (continues crying) He saw us.
ZOE: (dropping her jaws) Huh? Then… then what does he want?
FION: Annul our marriage.
ZOE: (sighs) Looks like you can’t take this… I’ll stay to accompany you tonight. (stroking her hair) Be good, don’t cry… You’ve still got Jerry.
FION: (calms down) Lik Hang has been with me for 8 years! The feeling is like a kin, although there are minimal feelings of love, but he can provide me security… I know if I marry him, we will stay together for our whole life…
ZOE: (nods in agreement) Many girls yearn for this too…
FION: But… You’re a girl too (Zoe nods her head) … Girls tend to want to pursue love, every girl would want to have an ideal lover, or like what they call it, Prince Charming… And Jerry is one of this kind…
ZOE: I agree… But…
FION: But a girl doesn’t have many 8 years’ deep relationship… I’ve invested 8 years of my time… I don’t want such an ending… (looks at her)
ZOE: (flashing response) I don’t have any opinions!
FION: I know I will be heartbroken breaking up with Jerry, but if I were to give up on Lik Hang, many things would have to be restarted from the beginning…
ZOE: I respect your choice… Most importantly, don’t regret it!
FION: (feels sad and guilty) The most innocent of all is Jerry!

(Clear Water Bay, morning)(Cool Man Building)(Kris, Louis and Steven have arranged to meet Uncle Chan’s two sisters)
KRIS: (gets down the car)(the sun is scorching) Is this the place? (taking off her sunglasses)
STEVEN: (gets down the car, followed by Louis) Yes, it is. They are having a meeting now, and it’ll end soon. (looking at his notebook)
LOUIS: What are their names, by the way?
STEVEN: The elder sister is Anne, and the younger one is Sonija. Let’s go in. (The three walks into the building)
(4th storey, The writer’s association)
RECEPTION: May I help you?
KRIS: I’m Kris Yip, and this is Steven Ma, and Louis Koo. We’ve arranged to meet Miss Anne Chan and Miss Sonija Chan.
(The three was brought to a room and Anne and Sonija came in after 5 minutes)
KRIS: (shakes hand with Anne and Sonija) Hi, I am, Kris Yip, the social worker in-charge of Uncle Chan’s case, (points to Steven) This is my colleague, Steven Ma… (to Louis) And this is Louis Koo, the psychologist treating Uncle Chan.
ANNE: So what do you all want to talk to us actually?
LOUIS: It’s about Uncle Chan’s split-brain disease, actually he is recovering but he seems to have some psychological barriers that are impeding his full recovery.
SONIJA: What do you mean?
STEVEN: I know Uncle Chan is concerned about you two, that is why he is psychologically unwilling to get well so you two won’t be arguing about whoever he should stay with upon his recovery.
ANNE: What do you mean by that? We are both willing to take him home, it’s just that since he had the disease, we feel that it will be better for him to have specialized care at the home…
KRIS: (butts in) Cut the act! All of us know what is going on, you two are just not willing to shoulder the responsibility of taking care and staying with him!
SONIJA: It’s our family matter. It’s none of your business!
KRIS: (angrily) Yes, that IS your family matter, but since I am the person-in-charge of Uncle Chan’s case, I have every reason to probe, the home is shelter for those homeless or helpless, not for hapless victims of unfilial daughters like YOU! (stares at them)
STEVEN: (continues) I know that you blame your dad for not being able to provide his family with a comfortable life, and indirectly causing your mother to slog her guts out and died without enjoying life before… But do you two know how your father feels? He is having this psychological barrier because he doesn’t wish to put you two into a difficult position. He sees himself as a burden, and an useless old fool…
LOUIS: (continues) And that is precisely why he is hindering his own recovery… He is so attentive and sensitive towards your feelings, why can’t you spare a thought for him?
STEVEN: You two are fortunate, because you have the chance to be filial to your father, I didn’t even met my parents before… although he is not providing you with a comfortable life, he is indeed trying his best… I remembered he once told me… that his child ambition was to be a pilot, and fly to different countries with his family… But due to financial limitations, his father couldn’t afford to send him to a school, so he had no chance of fulfilling his dream, but even as a construction worker, he worked hard… He slogged day and night… For what? Purely with the thought to provide his family with a better life, although he did not achieve his aim eventually, he tried… (getting agitated and weeping) He really tried, but you two don’t appreciate his intentions, and yet finding him a burden… He is not a burden, he is your father!
KRIS: (putting her hand on Steven’s shoulder) I hope you two would think it over… Let’s go… (the 3 of them leaves)

PS: OH NO!!! Fion had decided to give up Jerry!!! Will she regret it later on? Will her wedding with Lik Hang go as usual??? And Steven seems to have an unhappy past... and he is such an emotional person, will Kris be touched by his sincerity or will she prefer the cool-headed Louis???
