“You do the same thing, Kim.”
Those were the last words they said to each other before he left with all of his belongings. When the door to her apartment closed, all tears she was keeping inside fell endlessly. She loved him. Still loves him. And deep inside her heart, she knows that he also does. But separation is what’s best for the both of them.
Wiping her tears, she turned around and headed to the bedroom. Her eyes fell upon the picture frame that is prominently displayed on the bedside table. She picked it up. The picture was taken during their anniversary a couple months back. Gerald’s head was resting on her shoulders, his hands tightly wrapped around her waist. Kim, on the other hand, was leaning her head onto his, while her right hand was holding Gerald’s face. They both have smiles of contentment on their faces.
“How am I ever going to start living my life without you in it, Gerald?” Kim cried, still staring at the photo, running her fingers on Gerald’s face.

Gerald opened the door to his room, his brother Kenneth right behind him. “Are you sure you’re okay with me crashing at your place?”
“Of course, bro! Why wouldn’t I be?” Kenneth asked.
Gerald smiled “Don’t worry; as soon as I find a permanent place to live, I’m outta here.”
Kenneth teasingly punched his brother “What are you talking about? You can stay here. You and I can save a lot of rent money.”
“I know, but I really like to have my own place. Besides, I wouldn’t want to get in the way of your ‘life’, man.” Gerald teased. He started to unpack his clothes and put them in they closet.
Kenneth scowled at his brother. “Shut up!”
“Is that the best you can give me? Shut up?! Come on Ken, I know you better than that.”
Kenneth smiled as he helped Gerald unpack. “So, RJ...” he hesitated. “Are you going to... you know... tell me what happened? I mean, it’s not that I’m complaining you’re here.” He looked intently at Gerald, who conveniently busied himself unpacking, before continuing. “But I’m worried about you.”
Gerald deliberated whether he’s going to tell Kenneth or not. “We, uh, we’re...”
“I’m going to kick your fat ass out of here if you tell me that you guys are okay, because I know you’re not.” Kenneth threatened.
“Let me see you try, man.” Gerald replied.
Kenneth frowned. “Seriously...” Gerald cut him off before he can continue. “Seriously Ken, this is nothing I can’t handle. I appreciate your concern, I really do. But don’t worry about me.” he smiled and approached Kenneth who was sitting on the bed, still frowning. “Come on, let’s go out. I’m starving. My treat.”
Kenneth was not satisfied with his answer, but the offer was too tempting to resist. “Okay, but my choice of restaurant.” He grinned.
“Alright, let’s go, you knucklehead.” Kenneth grabbed his keys and followed his brother who was already at the door.

Gerald has been tossing and turning on his bed for quite a while but he couldn’t sleep. He glanced at the clock hanging on the wall and saw it was already half past two in the morning. He went out of his room and got himself a glass of milk, drinking half of it in one guzzle as he leaned on the counter, holding the glass. Noticing that Kenneth’s door was ajar, he sneaked a quick look inside. His brother was already sleeping. “How can he be sleeping when I can’t?! That is not fair.” He whispered to himself.
He grudgingly went back to the kitchen, finished his glass of milk and sauntered back to his room. Lying on his back for several minutes, Gerald turned to his left and was about to switch off the light when he saw his cell phone. He realized he hasn’t checked his messages since this morning. After debating with himself whether he should check or not, he finally picked it up.
He immediately regretted that decision the minute he saw Kim’s angelic face smiling at him from his phone. He stared at her picture for quite sometime, a sad smile forming on his lips. Pressing number 1 on his keypad and the call button, he lifted the phone onto his ears. But before he could hear the other line ringing, he pressed the end button.
“Let her go, Gerald.” He thought. He put back his phone at the table after tracing her face one more time, turned off the light and dozed off.
