Chapter 3

Over… Not!

Gerald felt so tired. He didn’t do much today except familiarize himself with the new training manual for Communications. He starts his first class next week so he needed a crash course given that it’s been a long time since he worked for Communications. Fortunately, Kenneth’s apartment was only some 20 minutes drive from office. He went straight to his room and stretched out on his bed, thinking about the events that happened earlier. It wasn’t for long though as his phone rang. “Ken, what’s up?”

“Hey bro! Are you home yet?” Kenneth asked.

“Yes, just got in a few minutes ago.” Gerald answered lazily.

“I am going to be home late. Thought I’d let you know so you won’t wait up.”

“Damn, I’m going to be alone tonight. That’s the last thing I need right now” Gerald thought. “Oh, okay. I guess I’ll just re-heat the left over pizza from last night.” He said to his brother.

“Are you sure? You can come with me if you want.” Ken offered.

Gerald mused at the idea for a few seconds then decided against it. “No, I’m good, bro. Enjoy yourself.”

“Okay then, see you in the morning.” Ken said as he ended the call.

Gerald proceeded to the kitchen and took out the pizza. He put it in the microwave and waited for a few minutes. He took out a bottle of beer and ate his measly dinner alone. After he finished his second bottle, he decided to turn in for the night. However, when he closed his eyes, all he could see was Kim’s face. “She’s so beautiful.” Gerald said to himself. He had been fighting the urge to call her since he arrived home. He lost the battle though as he found himself dialing Kim’s number.

“Hello?” Kim’s voice was uncertain on the other line.

“Kim? Is this a bad time for me to call?” Gerald asked.

“G-gerald? Uh, no. I was just having dinner with Cathy. Is everything okay?” Kim’s voice sounded concerned.

He hesitated for a second. “Oh, yeah. I thought I just have to apologize again for not telling you about my transfer before I accepted it.”

Kim was taken aback. “Gerald, we already discussed this. It’s part of the job. No worries.”

He heard a smile in her voice. “Thanks Kim. I guess I'm just feeling a bit guilty about it.”

“No need. Like I said, it’s part of the job.”

“Yes, it is. Uh…”

“Yes? Do you need something else?”

“No, let me get you back to your dinner. Sorry for bothering you. Tell Cathy I said hi. Bye Kim.” Came Gerald’s resigned voice

“Bye Gerald.” And Kim hung up.

“Was that Gerald as in Gerald Anderson your ex?” Cathy, Kim’s best friend asked.

Kim nodded as she ate her pasta. “We work in the same department now.”

“Really? Are you okay with that sis?”

Kim shrugged. “I guess so. I can’t do anything about it, can I?”

Cathy knew better that Kim was not telling the truth. “Kim, we have been friends since we were in diapers. I know you are not okay with this.”

Kim heaved a deep sigh. “Sis, there’s no point in complaining. It would be unprofessional of me. And we really need more trainers since we opened a new account. Mr. Roberts said that we need the best trainers and who better than him, right? I mean, he was originally from Communications and the only reason he moved to Products is because of me.” Kim took another bite before continuing. “Remember, he didn’t want us in the same department when I began working for the company.”

“I know that. But what I meant was…”

Kim cut what she knew would be Cathy’s telling off. “Cathy, I know what you mean. I have to admit this will be hard for me. He was my boyfriend for five long years, for God’s sake. Not to mention that it has only been a month since we broke up. But I will not risk my or his career over this. Don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine. Okay?”

Cathy considered her best friend for a minute before she responded. “Do you think… well, considering that you two will be working closely… um, there’s a chance that you and Gerald will, you know, get back together?”

Kim’s eyes grew wide as Cathy finished her question. “Cathy!”

“What?! I’m only stating the obvious, sis.”

“I don’t want to think about it. Look, there’s a reason why Gerald and I broke up and you know that. How can we possibly work that out in front of our colleagues?” Kim raised an eyebrow at her best friend.

“Okay. But I'm telling you, it’s hard to work with an ex.” Cathy said as Kim was finishing her pasta. “Especially since I know you’re not yet over him. Deny it all you want but I'm not buying it.” Kim almost choked on her drinks. She stared at Cathy. “Kim, you are my very best friend so I know you inside out. From what I can see, sorry sweetie but you are definitely not over Gerald.”
