Chapter 7

Nostalgia

Gerald arrived in Ken’s apartment and was surprised to find his brother home.

“Ken, what are you doing here?”

“What? I live here. Don’t I have the right to be here?”

“That’s not what I meant, silly. I mean, it's Friday. Aren’t you supposed to be out partying with your friends?”

“Oh I took a rain check. I want to help you pack and uh, maybe spend some time with you before you leave.”

Gerald looked at Ken curiously. “Am I hearing things?” Ken threw a pillow at Gerald. “Kenneth Anderson wants to spend Friday night with his brother at home.” Gerald was smiling. “I’ll forever remember this day.”

“Shut up! I'm only doing this because I feel guilty for not spending time with you since you moved in. I know you were going through something so I thought you need some space. But now that I think about it, I should’ve checked on you every now and then.”

“Ken, I know you have your own life to live.”

“But are you sure you still don’t want to talk about Kim?”

Gerald took a deep breath before responding. “Maybe we’re just not meant to be, man.”

“That is not true. If you believe someone or something is right for you, you fight for it. You just don’t give up on it easily.”

“You’ll never understand, Ken.”

“Try me, RJ.” Ken retorted.

Gerald stood up and walked towards his room before turning back to face Ken. “Maybe some other time. I really need to finish packing tonight.”

Ken stared at Gerald for a while before he sighed and stood up to follow Gerald inside his room.

Gerald and Ken were halfway through packing when Ken complained that he is hungry. That was the only time they realized that they haven’t eaten anything for dinner yet. Ken volunteered to go out and buy their food at a nearby restaurant.

While waiting for Ken, Gerald decided to check his email. He received several emails and went through them one by one. Couple of emails was from his dad. He opened the attachment and saw that it is a picture of their step-brother on his first birthday. Gerald smiled as he stared at the cute baby boy in the picture. “He looked like me when I was younger.” He muttered. Then he proceeded reading all the other emails. One email caught his attention. It was from Regine, a friend who works in Australia.

Gerald,

I'm sending you some of your and Kim’s picture that I found. Some of it was taken way back our college days and I was actually surprised that I still have it. I'm sure you and Kim would like to get a copy of these. I miss you both. See you soon.

Regine.

He felt nostalgic when he saw the pictures that Regine sent. She was a good friend who went to the same university as they did. He realized that neither he nor Kim told her yet about their break up. He typed his reply to Regine.

Reg,

Thanks a lot for the photos that you sent. Those were really old pics. Hehehe! Take care always. We miss you back here.

Gerald

After sending his reply, he closed the browser and the pictures he downloaded came into the screen. As he was scanning through the photos, he stopped at one particular picture. His and Kim’s. It was taken during the time that they told their friends that he and Kim were together.

(Flashback)

“Really? My best friend is officially off the market?!” Cathy exclaimed.

“As of last Friday.” Kim beamed.

“Wow! Congratulations!” David gave Gerald high fives and so did Xian and Carlo.

Meanwhile, Kim was being hugged by Cathy, Erich and Regine. “Took you long enough!” Regine cried out.

“Wait a second. Gerald, don’t you dare hurt Kim or I promise you I will break every bone in your body, understood?” Erich warned.

Gerald snorted at Erich’s remark but stopped when he saw that Cathy and Regine were staring at him as well. “Alright, I promise I won’t.”

“Kim, if you break Gerald’s heart, we will…” Carlo stopped as the girls were raising their eyebrows at him. “We will shut up and eat our lunch.”

Everybody laughed at Carlo. They went on to eat their lunch and went to their respective classes. Because Kim’s class is not until 2 pm and Gerald’s is at 3, they decided to go to the library.

“What exactly are we doing in here?” Gerald whispered to Kim once they were inside the library.

“Studying. I need to review for my exams later.” Kim whispered back.

“What? We’ve been studying the whole weekend?”

“Yes, I was. But I need to make sure I didn’t miss anything.”

“But what about me?”

Kim frowned. “What about you?”

“You’ve been ignoring me the whole weekend and then you decide to hang out here in the library. That’s not fair!”

“I’ve been ignoring you?!” Kim hissed. “How could I possibly ignore you when we spent practically the whole weekend together? You didn’t want to leave my house. I had to literally push you out of my door.”

“Can you blame me? I want to spend time with my girlfriend.” Gerald sulked.

Kim fought the urge to laugh. Instead she held his hand and intertwined it with hers. She then gave him a quick peck on the lips. “I'm sorry. This girlfriend wants to spend time with the handsome boyfriend as well. But we have finals, Ge. I promise to make it up to you once finals are over.”

“Okay.” Gerald resigned. “Do you mind if I hold your hand while we are studying?” he asked after a few minutes of silence.

Kim let out a silent laugh and nodded. “I guess I can live with that.”

“I love you.” Gerald bent over and kissed Kim’s forehead.
“I love you too. Now can we go back to studying before we get kicked out of the library?” Kim said and Gerald nodded.
