Chapter 8

Gerald’s Invitation

“Kim! Kim!” Kim turned around and saw Jane trying to catch up with her.

“How was your weekend, Jane?” Kim asked.

“Good. Yours?”

Kim shrugged. “Okay, I guess. I went home to my dad’s house, spent the whole Saturday with my siblings.”

“You didn’t visit Gerald?”

Kim rolled her eyes. “I don’t even know where he lives.” she turned on her computer to check memos sent through email over the weekend. “Have you studied the training module for this week?”

“Yes. I'm ready for whatever you will ask me to do in training today.” Jane winked at her. “So anyway, you still owe me. I haven’t forgotten.”

“Owe you what?”

“You haven’t finished telling me everything about you and Gerald!”

Kim was shocked. “Ssshhh!”

Jane looked around. “Sorry boss, I got carried away. I'm just excited about your history with Gerald. Plus, I think he wants you back, Kim.”

“No he doesn’t.” Kim replied indignantly. “What makes you say that?”

“Well, for one he brought you your favorite flowers without any reason at all. Secondly, he has been stealing glances at you from his office.”

Kim blushed. “Come on Jane that was just a friendly gesture. Don’t put any malice into it. Let’s go.” Kim hurriedly went out of her office, purposely avoiding looking at Gerald’s direction.

Jane raised her eyebrows but didn’t say anything. She just followed Kim inside the training room.

During lunch break, Gerald and Kim bumped into each other on the way to the pantry.

“Oh, I'm sorry.” Gerald froze when he realized it was Kim he bumped into. “Kim.”

She just smiled and continued walking towards the pantry. “Uh, Kim do you mind if I join you for lunch?”

Kim hung back before nodding. “Its okay, I don’t mind. I'm not sitting with anybody.”

“Okay.” When they ordered their food, Gerald paid for her lunch. Kim refused but he insisted so she had no choice but to give in.

“Thank you.” Kim said to Gerald when they were already seated at the table.

“It’s just lunch.” Gerald smiled.

“So, uh, how’s your new apartment?” Kim tried to break the silence.

“Oh, yeah, I just finished moving all my stuff yesterday. I still had to sleep at Ken’s place Saturday night. But last night I was finally moved in.”

“Cool. At least now you have your own place to go home to where you can be yourself.”
Gerald muttered under his breath. “Like how I feel when I'm with you.”

“I'm sorry?” Kim asked.

“No, nothing. I said it’s nice to finally be alone. I mean, I had no problems living with Ken, but I feel more at ease now that I have a place to call my own. Even if I walk around naked, no one would be bothered.” Gerald laughed at Kim’s expression. “Of course, I'm just kidding.” He took a bite. “And I'm not planning on doing it anytime soon.” He quickly said.

“Okay.” Kim chuckled.

“Seriously though, would you like to check out my apartment later? Have coffee or something.” Gerald looked at Kim, hopeful.

Kim finished her sandwich and took a sip of her mango juice, thinking about Gerald’s offer. When she ran out of something to do, she finally looked up at Gerald. “I don’t know. I have training reports to finish. I might not get out of here for hours.”

“That’s okay. In case you’ve forgotten, I am a trainer as well so I also have reports to do like you.”

She considered him for a minute before smiling. “I guess coffee wouldn’t hurt.”

“Great! I’ll come pick you up in your office around six. Or is that too early?”

“Uh, no, I think I’ll be done by then.”

“Perfect.” Gerald beamed at Kim.

(Flashback)

“Kim, I'm not going to spend the entire summer vacation away from you.” Gerald said crossly.

“But you are going to be with your dad for the summer. You can’t travel back and forth everyday just to see me for a few hours. That’s just unfeasible.” Kim argued.

“I'm not going then. I will stay here with my mom.”
Kim moved away from Gerald. “Oh no, you're not. You promised your dad. He’s expecting you to be there. You said it yourself; you are excited to be with him.”

“I know. But that was before. When I made plans with him, we weren’t together yet.”

“Okay, honey, you need to be rational. A promise is a promise. Your dad is looking forward to spending quality time with you and Kenneth. I'm sure he will be more than disappointed if you tell him you're not going just because you have a girlfriend.”

“I'm getting the impression that you don’t want to be with me this summer.” Gerald frowned.

Kim leaned her head on Gerald’s shoulder and held his arm. “Look, I'm not thrilled that we will be apart from each other for three months either. Just thinking about it, I miss you already. However, you can’t cancel your summer plans with your father just because of me. I'm not going to let you do that. Family is important.”

Gerald placed his arm around her and sighed. “I know that. I'm just pissed that I can’t do anything about it.”

“Tell you what. Why don’t you ask your dad to let you off for a couple of days so you can come and visit me? That way, you fulfill your promise to your dad but still get to spend time with me. Or maybe we can meet halfway somewhere so that you don’t have to drive the whole way going here.” Kim proposed.

“Kim, I'm not going to let you drive yourself for an hour and a half alone.”

“Well then I'm going to ask Cathy and Xian to come with me.”

“That’s a very tempting offer. But I’d rather go with your first idea. It is much more suitable for me. You see, if we meet halfway, we only get to spend a few hours together whereas if I come and visit you here, we get a few days. I don’t mind driving back and forth as long as I get to spend time with my baby.”

“I am your baby huh?” Kim sniggered.

“Yes you are. And I am most definitely yours.” Gerald cuddled Kim closer.

“So is my baby finally out of his cranky mood now that we’ve come up with a plan for the summer?”

“Almost. Your baby just needs one more thing.”

“Uh-huh. What would that be?”

Gerald pouted his lips as if asking for a kiss. Kim giggled as she moved in and planted a soft kiss on Gerald’s lips.

“Satisfied?”

Gerald pouted once more. “Can you make it a little longer?”
Kim pinched his cheeks. “The baby doesn’t need any more of that for now.” She stood up. “I'm starving. I can smell dad’s cooking from here. Come on, I think dinner is almost ready.”

Gerald groaned as Kim pulled him to stand up. They went inside the house and joined Kim’s family for dinner.
