Miso sat outside of the coffee shop, drinking her
cappuccino as she
watched the leaves fall from the trees, down onto the
sidewalk. She sighed,
remembering a song. “The falling leaves, drift by my
window, the falling
leaves of red and gold. I see your lips, the summer kisses,
and the sunburned
hand I used to hold. Since you went away, the days grow
long. And soon I’ll
hear, old winter’s song. But I miss you, most of all, my
darling. When autumn
leaves start to fall.” The song reminded her of her
boyfriend, Choi
Seung Hyun, who left her suddenly. He left with no
explanation, and it
Broke her heart. She took a sip of her coffee. “Miso.” A
deep male voice
Called to her. She froze. “It couldn’t be.” She thought,
but slowly looked up.
Standing before her was Seung Hyun. “Seung Hyun.” She said,
coldly.
She only called him by his real name when she was upset. He
sighed.
“Miso. I know you’re mad that I just left, but I can
explain.” He said.
She tried to make her gaze hard, but the intensity of his
eyes had to
Make her look away. “Just save it.” She said and stood up
from her table,
Taking her coffee with her. She started to walk down the
sidewalk, when
He grabbed her by the arm. She turned around, and pulled
her arm out of
His grasp, and continued to walk quickly down the street.
He caught up with
Her again, and grabbed her by the shoulders, stopping her.
She sighed and
Looked up at him. “I don’t know what reason you could
possibly have for just
Leaving me like that.” She told him. “I was sick. I had to
go the states for
Treatment. I didn’t want to tell you. I’m better now
though. I’m sorry.” He
Said. “Am I really supposed to believe that?” She said. “I
understand if you
Don’t believe me. I just wanted to say I’m sorry.” He
said. “Well I don’t believe
You. I should have known you were like this. Making up
excuses for your
Mistakes.” She said. And then she walked off again, down
the sidewalk, tears
Falling from her eyes. He didn’t go after her again.
A few weeks passed by, Miso was out with some of
her friends at a bar.
“Unni. Let’s go dance?” Cemmy asked her. She didn’t exactly
feel like getting
Up, but agreed. She walked over onto the dance floor with
her friend. Soon
She and her friend swayed around to the beat of “I Don’t
Know” by Moon Ji
Eun. People cheered them on, drinks in hand, as she let
herself just get lost
In the music. As she danced, she turned around and spotted
Seung Hyun
And YooBin at one of the tables. The rest of the Big Bang
members were there
As well. But Miso noticed Seung Hyun looking at her. She
looked away and
Stopped dancing. Then she hurried out of the bar. “Unni!”
Cemmy called
After her, but she ignored it. Miso got into her car and
drove home.
A week had passed by and Miso was in Virginia with her
family to visit her
Grandparents. She was at the hospital, sitting in the
waiting room, because she
Was taking her grandma for her annual checkup. As she sat,
flipping through a
magazine, She overheard a nurse and a doctor talking at the
front desk. “Make
sure to send Mr. Choi’s medical records over to Korea, in
case he’ll be needing
treatment again.” The doctor said. “Yes, Mr. Kim.” The
nurse said. Miso’s ears
perked up. She got up from the seat, and walked over to the
front desk. “Excuse
me, but are you Talking About Choi Seung Hyun by any
chance?” She asked.
The nurse looked at her, Surprised. “I’m not really
supposed to be giving out that
kind of information.” She told Miso. “Could I speak with
the doctor?” She asked
the nurse. The nurse Sighed, but paged Dr. Kim. “Yes?” Dr.
Kim came back out
again. “I know Seung Hyun. Could you please tell me what
his case was?” She
asked. He sighed, but could tell she was telling the truth.
“Mr. Choi had
glastrophoba. A very serious tumor in the left side of his
brain. But he went
through an experimental surgery to Remove the tumor. He was
very lucky to
have survived it.” He explained. Miso gasped. “Why did he
go through with the
experimental surgery?” She asked Him. The doctor shrugged
but told her. “He
said there was a very special girl back home in Korea, that
he had to try and fight
the sickness for. He said he would Rather take the chance
of dying, if there were
also a chance that he would live. It Surprised me very much
when he said in
these words, “I promised someone that I would never leave
them. I had to try
and keep that promise.” He explained. Miso quickly thanked
the doctor, then left
the hospital, she called her brother, telling him he had to
pick up their grandma.
Then she quickly went to the Airport, buying a ticket for
the next flight to Korea.
She waited for a few hours at the Airport, until her flight
was called. The woman
at the ticket counter, who took part of Her ticket, was
surprised when she had no
carry on luggage. Miso just nodded and thanked her, and
then hopped on the
plane. The twelve hour flight made her fidgety. She went
through two bags of
the airline pretzels, and three cups of coke. She watched
Memoirs of Geisha,
Hancock, Pride and Prejudice, and The Lake House. Soon, the
plane Landed and
she hurried out of the plane. She ran across the airport,
as people stared at her.
She hurried through the automatic sliding doors, and
quickly called a cab. When
She closed the back seat door, behind her, and the driver
asked her where to, she
realized she didn’t know where Seung Hyun was. But then she
told the driver to
drive to the address of the former Big Bang apartment. When
she got there, she
hurried up the flight of stairs. She knocked on the door.
And Jiyong opened it.
He looked surprised to see her. “Dongseng. What are you
doing here?” He
asked. “Have you seen, Seung Hyun oppa?” She asked him. “He
went out about
half an hour ago. I don’t know where he went.” He
explained. Miso thanked him
and left again. She looked around from place to place,
frantically. She ran down
the side street, passing the park. She back tracked, when
she spotted Seung Hyun
'
playing basketball at one of the courts. She stopped,
running and walked over to
where he was playing. He saw her and put the basketball
down on the ground,
letting it roll across the court. She walked up to him.
“Hey.” She said, looking
Up at him. “Hey.” He said. “Can we talk?” She asked. He
nodded and they sat
down on the bench. “Um. So I was at a hospital in Virginia,
and I heard about
what happened to you.” She said. “Oh.” He said. “I-I’m
sorry I didn’t believe
you before.” She said. “It’s okay. That’s what I was trying
to tell you but then
you--.” He started to say but then said, “Wait. You were in
Virginia earlier?” He
said. She nodded. “But then how did you get back so fast?”
He asked. “I took the
next flight back.” She said. “And the rest of your family
is still there?” He said.
“Yeah. I had to get back and find you.” She admitted. “Oh.”
He said. “So you
really said all that? You told the doctor you promised me
you wouldn’t leave me,
that’s why you went through the surgery?” She said. He
nodded. “Oh.” She said
this time. “Miso.” He said. She looked back at him again.
He brushed a strand of
hair that had fallen in front of her face, behind her ear.
And then
He held her right cheek gently, leaning in to kiss her.
Miso closed her eyes as she
felt his lips press softly onto her own, as the leaves of
red and gold fell from the
trees.
