when she noticed an old lady beside her. She kindly
offered to help the lady cross the street. The old woman
looked at her with gratitude. "Oh, thank you dear. I
would really appreciate it." The old woman said to her.
Hirin nodded with a smile, and when the crosswalk sign
lit up, she gently took the old woman by the arm, and
helped her cross the street. When they got to the
end of the street, the old woman thanked her. Hirin,
smiled and said goodbye, and went on her way.
It was a nice day, the sun was out, amd just
a slight chill in the air. It was the weekend so she
had a job, that she enjoyed, walking dogs around the
neighborhood. She walked no more than two dogs a day.
First she went to the Lee's house. Mrs. Lee greeted
her with a smile, and handed her the leash of
Momo, a white bichon frise breed. Hirin took the leash
and said she would be back in about an hour. She then
walked Momo down the streets to the next house.
Hirin walked up the front walkway of the house, with
Momo in tow. She rang the doorbell and Mrs. Noh opened
the door, greeting Hirin with a smile. "Oh, Hirin
dear. You're here to take Fluffy I assume?" Mrs. Noh
asked her, referring to the Noh's beagle. "Yes, Mrs. Noh."
Hirin answered politely. "Oh, lovely. It's too bad that
Ajoo just left a few minutes ago, he would've been happy
to see you. He went out with Taecyeon and Nickhun."
Mrs. Noh said. "Oh, it would've been nice to see him
too. Tell him I said hello." Hirin said. Mrs. Noh said
she would and went to go get Fluffy. Hirin and Ajoo went
to the same highschool, while Hirin was a sophomore and
Ajoo was a senior. There parents were good friends.
The Noh's lived in the upper class neighborhood, while
Hirin's family lived in the middle class neighborhood.
Soon, Mrs. Noh came back with Fluffy who barked happily
at seeing her. Hirin took the leash and told Mrs. Noh
she would be back in an hour. She walked Momo and fluffy
down the sidestreets for awhile, and went to the
park to go walk them around the area there. She felt
very upbeat that morning, walking the dogs who weren't
yapping at each other. She started to walk past the
basketball courts and saw Ajoo, Nickhun and Taecyeon
playing basketball. Ajoo saw her and waved. Nickhun
and Taecyeon noticed and turned, and waved to Hirin
as well. "Hirin, wanna play with us?" Ajoo asked.
She called back to him. "Sorry, have to walk the dogs
maybe next time." She said. He nodded and they went
back to their game, and Hirin continued to walk the
dogs. She checked the time on her cellphone. It
was just about time to drop the dogs off. She headed
back to the neighborhood, dropping Fluffy off at the
Noh's first. She mentioned to Mrs. Noh about seeing Ajoo
at the park. "Oh, yes. My son loves to play basketball
with his friends there." Mrs. Noh said, remembering.
Hirin nodded, and Mrs. Noh handed her a ten. Hirin thanked
her and went off to the Lee's. Mrs. Lee opened the door,
and thanked her, handing her a ten, and taking Momo's
leash. Hirin thanked her and said goodbye, going back home.
The following monday, Hirin was at her locker,
putting her books away, when a commotion was suddenly
heard.

Hirin turned, and rolled her eyes slight. It was
Younha, walking into the school, strutting down
the hallway in her heels. One of her student followers
came to her, with a bottle of Snapple from the vending
machine. "Snapple? No. No No. Go get me a peach ice tea
from the Starbucks down the street. And make it fast.
Class starts in ten minutes." Younha said to the girl,
with a wave of her hand. The girl looked crushed and
ran out of the school to do as she was told. Hirin
shook her head, and walked to her Calculus class.
She went to her classroom, and put down her bookbag,
beside her desk and sat down in the second row of the
class. Soon the bell rang, and the rest of the class
piled in. Their teacher started the lecture. Hirin
and two other sophomores were the only lower classmen
in the class, it was mostly seniors, with some juniors.
Ajoo was one of the seniors in the class, along with
Nickhun. "Hey, Hirin." Ajoo said to her, as he sat
a few desks to the left of her. "Hi oppa." She said.
They all sat down and listened to their teacher
teach the new lesson and they took notes and did
classwork. Soon class ended and they were dismissed.
Hirin then went to her next classes of English II,
World History, Chemistry, followed by lunch, then her
last class of the day, French II. Then she went to her
locker and got her books, then walked with her friend
Yuli back to their houses. "Unni, you know the dance is
this Friday." Yuli said as they walked home. "I know
dongseng. You still want to go?" Hirin asked her.
"Yeah. Don't you?" Yuli asked her. "Well, a little. But
no one asked us." Hirin pointed out. "So? We can go
stag, with friends." Yuli said. "Well, I don't know."
Hirin said, skeptical. "Come on Unni, I'll do your hair
and makeup. It'll be fun." Yuli pleaded.
"Oh, okay." Hirin agreed. "Yay." Yuli said excited.
Hirin smilied slightly, thinking that Ajoo would be there.
They got to her house, and said their goodbyes, while
Yuli walked a few more houses down to her house. They
lived near to each other.
Throughout the week, Hirin had the dance on her
mind. In calculus class, someone threw a paper ball
at her. Hirin snapped out of her daydream, and turned
Ajoo waved at her, and motioned for her to open
it. Hirin opened the crumpled paper. It read.
"Hey you alright? You seem kinda out of it."
Hirin was about to take her pencil from her case to
write back, when the teacher came by and took the paper
away from her. "Hirin? Writing notes? Detention
after school. Half an hour.' The teacher said.
"But.." Hirin started to say. "Mrs. Shim, it wasn't Hirin.
I was the one who wrote the note." Ajoo spoke up. Hirin
looked at him, with a "what do you think you're doing?"
look. He ignored it. "Maybe so, Mr. Noh, but how do I know
she wasn't going to write back and further disrupt
my teaching?" Mrs. Shim said. "She wasn't. She told me
to stop. She wasn't going to write back." Ajoo said.
"Well, alright. Mr. Noh, then you'll serve detention
after school." Mrs. Shim said and went back to the
front of the classroom, throwing the paper in the trash
and continuing with the lesson. Hirin looked at Ajoo
and mouthed. "Oppa, why?" She asked. Ajoo just mouthed
back. "Don't worry about it." He said. Soon class was over
and Hirin went to her next classes, wondering why
he would do such a thing. Soon class ended. Yuli met with
Hirin at the lockers, but Hirin told her to go ahead of
her, she had to do something. Yuli nodded and left
school ahead of her. Hirin went to the classroom
for detention, and saw Ajoo and a few other people
sitting down at the desks, quiet, doing homework.
Ajoo looked up and mouthed for her to go home. Hirin
shook her head. Ajoo sighed. Hirin went to talk with
Mrs. Shim. 'Mrs. Shim, isn't there some way you could
let Ajoo go home already?" Hirin asked. "I have to
follow the school's protocol dear. But well, maybe there
is something, that you could do." Mrs. Noh whispered
to her. "Me? What is it?" Hirin asked. Mrs. Shim nodded.
"You could agree to tutor some of the seniors in the
calculus class for a semester." Mrs. Shim said.
"Oh, okay." Hirin said. Mrs. Shim thanked her and
called to Ajoo. "Mr. Noh?" She said to him. Ajoo looked
up from his desk, worried. "You may go now. Your family
has some sort of emergency." She made up. Ajoo nodded
and hurried out of the room with Hirin. Once they were
out of the school, and were walking home, he said to
Hirin. "What did you do that for?" He asked. "What?
What about you? Why did you take my place in detention?"
She asked him. "Because it was my fault." He said.
"Not exactly, you knew i was going to write something
yet, you told her I wasn't. Why?" She asked him.
"Me? Why did you get me out of detention?" He asked her.
"You answer me first." She said. "No you tell me first."
He said. "Oppa." Hirin said exasperated. "Hirin." He
said, faking exasperation. "Fine. We won't tell each
other then. But then thanks anyway." SHe said. "Sure.
Thanks for getting me out of there too." He said.
Hirin nodded. They walked back to her house first.
Hirin spoke up when they got to her house. "You know
oppa, we could've gone to your house first, I could've
dropped you off, then walked to my house, since your house
is closer." She said. "Yeah, but probably by the time
you get back to your house, it'll get darker. You can't
walk by yourself." He said. "Oppa, we live in a safe
neighborhood." She pointed out. "But how safe is it
really?" He said, pondering. Hirin shook her head.
"Aigoo. Oppa. You worry too much. But thanks." She said
and waved goodbye. He nodded and started to walk down the
steps of the front porch, when he turned around again, just
as she was opening the front door. "Hey Hirin?" He said.
Hirin stopped turning the lock, and turned. "Yeah?"
She said. "Are you going to the dance on Friday?" He asked.
"Uh, I think so why?" She asked. "Oh, just wondering.
Who're you going with?" He asked. "Oh, with Yuli. Yeah
we're just going stag together." Hirin explained.
"Oh, well, I was wondering if you wanted to go with me.
I mean, uh, as friends you know." He added. Hirin was
surprised. "Oh, sure oppa, but what about Yuli?" Hirin
asked, concerned about her friend. "Oh, I think someone
is planning to ask her tommorow." Ajoo said. "Really? Who?
Tell me oppa." Hirin said, curious. "Nope. Don't tell her
I told you." He said. "I won't. I want her to be
surprised." Hirin said. Ajoo smiled and said goodbye.
saying the limo would come by at 7 that Friday. She smiled
back and waved goodbye going into her house.
The following morning, Yuli and Hirin were at the
lockers getting their books, when Nickhun came by.
"hey Yuli, do you have a minute?" He asked her. Yuli
looked at him, and apologized saying she had to look
for something, and class was starting soon. Hirin kicked
her shoe, as discreetly as she could. Yuli looked up
and Hirin told her with her eyes, to just go with him.
"Oh, okay. I guess I could." She said and went with
Nickhun down the hallway. Ajoo came by the lockers.
"Hey, nice kicking your best friend." He joked. "Oppa, I
am a pacifist, you know that. It was just a little nudge."
Hirin said. "Oh, and why did you want her to go with
Nickhun so badly?" Ajoo asked. "Because I realized he's
the one who's going to ask her to the dance." Hirin said.
Ajoo looked impressed. "Wow. So you're psychic now?" He
teased. "Yeah. And I can read minds too." She joked back.
"Really? What am I thinking now?" He said. Hirin looked
at him, pretending to concentrate realy hard, when his
stomach grumbled. Hirin laughed. "You're thinking about
how much you want a taco." She said with a smile. He smiled
back, and said, "Very funny." They laughed and walked to
their Calculus class. Soon the class was over and Hirin
went to the rest of her classes. Then following lunch,
she and Ajoo met up with Yuli and they were all smiles.
"Hey, you guys look happy." Hirin commented. "Oppa, asked
me to the dance." Yuli said. "Aw, congrats." Hirin said.
"Aren't you upset? We were supposed to go together." Yuli
said to her. "I know. But no worries." Hirin said as they
all sat at the lunch table. Yuli looked confused so
Ajoo, stepped in. "I asked Hirin also." He explained.
"Oh, yay. We can go as a group of four now." Yuli said
excitedly while the rest of them chuckled.
The following day, school passed by quickly and
that night was the dance. Yuli and Hirin walked home
together, to get ready. They both slipped on their dresses,
and put on robes on top, so make up and hair products
wouldn't get on the dresses. Hirin did Yuli's hair and
makeup first. She flat ironed Yuli's dark jet black
tresses, then swept it into a loose updo, with a few
layers framing her face. Then she gave her a smokey
eye look with a dark plum eyeshadow, followed by a nude
lipstick with a touch of lipgloss. Yuli wore a silver
dress, with a bubblelike bottom, along with t strap
open toe shoes. Then Yuli did Hirin's makeup. She gave
Hirin a very natural look. Just a single coat of
mascara on the eyes, followed by a light blush on
the cheeks, and a pink flecked gloss. She curled
Hirin's long gold, hair, putting it in a half updo,
and letting the rest hang loose on her shoulders and back.
Hirin wore a green, sleeveless dress, that was flowy,
towards the bottom, but nipped in at the waist. It set
off her eyes dramatically. She took off her glasses
and put in her contacts. Yuli and Hirin looked at
themselves in Hirin's full length mirror of her bedroom.
"Woah." They both said. They looked at the time.
They took in a breath, and went downstairs where
Hirin's mom took many pictures of the girls. The
doorbell rang, and Ajoo and Nickhun were at the doorstep.
"Wow." They both said, admiring the girls. "Thanks. You
guys look good too." The girl's said. Hirin's mom took
a few more pictures of the group of friends, and
then they went off to the limo, to go to their dance.
Their dance was on the Queen Mary ship. Soon, they arrived
at the dock, and were dropped off. The four went up the
boardwalk and got onto the ship, and went inside the
ballroom of the ship, were the dance was being held.
A disco ball was in the center of the room, followed by
a stage towards the front of the room, and round tables,
to the left and right of the room. At the back
was the long table of the punch fountain, a chocolate
fountain, appetizers and the main entrees where people
could help themselves. "Want me to get some punch?" Ajoo
asked. Hirin nodded, thanking him. Yuli and Nickhun
had gone off to say hi to some of their other friends.
Hirin stood, looking around at the scenery. Soon Ajoo
came back with two cups of punch, she thanked him
and drank some. Soon they finished their punch.
"Do you want to dance?" He asked her. "Okay." Hirin said
and he led her to the middle of the room, where the dance
floor was. Some fast 80's music was playing so they
just goofed around, for awhile, doing the robot and
the sprinkler. Then the track changed to a slow
ballad. They looked at each other awkwardly. They both
stepped forward slowly. Hirin was tall for her age, and
with her heels, she was almost Ajoo's height. She placed
her left hand on his shoulder, while he placed his hand
on her waist, then she placed her right hand, in his right
hand, and they moved around, swaying to the music.
Soon, the sound of Hirin's heart beating loudly in her
ears seemed to drown out the music, so Ajoo had to
call to her a few times, to tell her the song was over.
"Hmm?" She said. "The song's over. Come on." He said, and
they sat down at the round tables with Yuli and Nickhun.
Ajoo excused himself and said he had to talk with a few
people, Hirin nodded and went to get some food. As she
walked across the ballroom, she saw Ajoo facing his
back to her, talking with some other seniors that she
didn't know. As she got some food, she couldn't help
but overhear, their conversation. "Dude. What are you
thinking. She's a sophomore and you're a senior." One
guy said. "Yeah, and she walks your dog." Another guy
added. "Guys. I know. I know she's just a sophomore,
I know she walks my dog. I get that." Ajoo said. By
this time, Hirin was hurt. But she placed her
food down on the long table, and walked up behind him,
tapping him on the shoulder. He turned around.
"Hirin." He said. "I guess I know what you really think
of me now, huh oppa?" Hirin said, her voice shaky and
her eyes watering. She turned around, and ran out of
the ballroom, to the front deck of the ship. Ajoo
ran after her. "Hirin wait." He said. She looked at
him, shaking her head, and made her way up the steps
of the ship, to the upper deck. He grabbed her hand,
turning her around to face him. They both stood at
the railings, on the steps of the ship, that lead to
the upper deck. The moon shone brightly, reflecting on
the ocean. "Just hear me out. Please." He said.
Hirin sighed. "Fine." She said. "What you heard. I wasn't
done yet. I was going to tell them that I didn't care
about those things. It didn't matter to me. Our age
difference, whether we're in different social classes.
Hirin do you want to know why, I took the detention
in place of you?" He asked her. "Why?" She asked him.
"Because I like you." He said. Hirin's eyes widened.
"Really?" She said. "Really. You have to know I must
really like someone, to be willing to spend an extra
half hour at school, when I don't have to." He said.
Hirin smiled and he smiled back, pulling her closer to
him, and wrapping his arms around her. She looked up
at him, and closed her eyes, when his face grew closer
to her's. Soon his lips met her own softly. After
a few seconds, they broke apart. "So, are you going
to tell me why you got me out of detention?" He asked
her. "Well, you know I felt bad about it." She said.
Ajoo looked slightly sad. "I'm kidding oppa, it's
because I like you too of course." She said. He smiled
and they walked back into the ballroom, hand in hand.
