Goong, while she was in her free period. She was just
getting to the part when ChaeGyung was running away
from Shin, when she heard someone pull out a chair beside
her. She glanced to her right, and saw Junho who smiled
at her. She smiled back. "Hey, oppa." She said.
"What are you reading?" He asked her. "Goong." She
said, showing him the cover. He nodded. "Do you
have free period right now too?" She asked him.
He shook his head. "Since I'm a senior I only have
five classes." He explained. "Oh." She said.
"Hey you don't have any classes after this right?"
He asked her. She shook her head. "Great. Wanna help
me with something?" He asked her. "What?" She asked,
setting down her book on the table, and taking off
her glasses. "I need to make homemade ice cream for
my little cousins birthday party tomorrow. Can you
come over and help?" He asked. "Icecream? Okay." She
said. They pushed back their chairs and she grabbed
her things and he drove them over to his house.
They got out of the car, and he brought out
an old fashioned ice cream maker. And they brought
out the cream, sugar, and salt as well. They stood
in the front of his yard, pouring all the ingredients
in, as well as ice around the smaller canister where
the cream and sugar were, and they took turns,
cranking it, until it was well mixed. And then they
added a few teaspoons of vanilla extract. Then
cranked it a few more times. After EunHee took her
turn cranking it. She stopped after awhile and said.
"Why don't you just buy ice cream oppa?" She asked
him. Junho sighed. "My omma said, Junho, your cousin
wants homemade ice cream, so your going to take our
ice cream machine and make ice cream before tomorrow."
He said, imitating his mom, which made EunHee laugh.
Junho smiled, happy to see her laugh. "I see. But
couldn't you have asked the guys to help? They probably
would've done a better job than I did." She said.
"Nah. Plus I know you like ice cream, so I thought
you might want to help." He said. She nodded, surprised
he remembered. "I think it's ready now." He said.
They opened the canister and he handed her a small spoon
and they both taste tested it. "Not bad. Maybe it needs
more.." She started to say. "Sugar?" He finished off for
her. She smiled nodding. And they added a little bit more
sugar, then cranked the handle again. They tasted
it again. "Perfect." She said with a smile. Junho
also smiled and then they brought the finished
ice cream, back into the house. And they
put it into the freezer. Then walked back into
the living room. "So, want to watch tv?" He suggested.
She nodded, and they sat down on the couch, a
few inches between each other and he turned on the
t.v. They flipped through the channels, going from
commercial to commercial, to talk shows, to cartoons,
to informercials, not really anything to watch. He
turned the t.v. off. And they both glanced at each
other. As if a magnetic force was pulling them together,
they slowly scooted closer on the couch, next to
each other, their faces, inching closer together, until
their lips, almost touched, but she backed up at the
last second. He opened his eyes. "I..should get home.
Thanks for inviting me over oppa." She said quickly,
and left the house. She walked down the streets quickly,
flustered. "I almost kissed him." She thought,
scolding herself. She was walking, when a few
guys, probably only a few years older, in wife beaters
baggy jeans and tattoos, saw her. "Hey girl, what're
you doing around here all alone?" One guy said,
advancing towards her. EunHee looked around and
realized she ended up at a bad part of
the city. She cursed herself for not being
more aware of her surroundings. "Oh shit." She mumbled
to herself. They started to surround her, and she
was freaking out, but quickly pulled the alarm on
her cellphone, letting out a loud shriek and the guys
were thrown off. Junho, having tried to go after her,
to offer her a ride home, heard the alarm and quickly
followed it. "Yah! Leave her alone!" He yelled at the
guys firmly. EunHee's eyes widened and she turned
around. "Oppa." She said, surprised. Junho came forward
and quickly beat up the guys and took EunHee's hand and
they quickly ran around the corner, going back to
the safe side of the city. She couldn't help but realize
how familiar everything seemed. When they stopped running
and were just walking to his car, she spoke up.
"Thanks for saving me." She said. Junho glanced
at her with a small smile on his face, nodding.
"Sure." He said. "Hey oppa?" She said, unsure if she
should ask him or not. "Yeah?" He said glancing
at her again. "Six years ago, did you save a little
girl from thugs before? At, an abandoned alley?"
She asked him. He glanced at her surprised.
"Yeah. How did you know?" He asked her. "Opaa, I
was the little girl. I've been wondering ever since
then who it was that saved me. And you've saved me for
the second time today. Oppa, people have said you like
me, but I'm not really sure if you do. But, I like
you." She said, looking up at him. They stopped
walking. He glanced down at her again. "EunHee, I
always wondered who it was that I saved those many
years ago. I'm glad it was you and that I was able
to be here for you again. I want to protect you,
not just as an oppa, but a boyfriend. I do like you
Park EunHee." He said. EunHee glanced up
at him, a smile on her face. "I've finally found
my hero." She said with a light laugh. He laughed
back lightly, embracing her warmly.
"And our first place winners for the spring showcase
are Miss Park EunHee and Mr. Lee Junho with their
impressive tango rendition." The announcer said.
EunHee and Junho were surprised and they took their
trophy, bowing and expressing their many thanks to
their teachers and classmates and to the sponsors.
Then they left the auditorium, walking up to
the school's rooftop. They looked out at the city
as the sky was just starting to darken. The air
fresh and cool, on their faces. "EunHee ah." Junho
said to her, as he stood next to her as they leaned
against the rooftop's brick enclosure. "Deh oppa?"
She said with a small smile, looking up at him.
"You know how we're together now?" He said. She nodded
smiling. "There's still something I havent' done."
He said. She looked up at him questiongly. "What?"
She asked him. He pulled her close to him, and
leaned down, and she closed her eyes, and his lips
met her own softly. She tiptoed, kissing him back,
happy to have found her hero.
"I wasn't the one guarding you. You were guarding me."
