Chapter 31

Ashley&Nickhun-You're Everything To Me Part II

"Mom. I'm home." Ashley called into her house,

as she entered. Her mom came out from the living room, into

their hallway. "Oh, Ashley honey you're home. I'm going to

be at a meeting until 6. So could you fix up dinner for

your little brother?" Her mom asked her. Ashley nodded

with a smile. "Sure. Mom." She said. Her mom smiled

back, and gave her a kiss on the cheek before leaving,

the house to go to work. Ashley climbed up the stairs

and went to check on her little brother. He was playing

Wii in his room. "Hey, are you hungry?" She asked her

eight year old brother. He glanced up at her from

playing the remote control. "Not yet. But can you

macaroni and cheese?" He asked her. "Again?" She

said, raising her eyebrows. "Please? Ashley please?"

He begged. She smiled. "You're sounding more and

more like those preschoolers I take care of." She

said. "Hey." He said. She laughed and left his

room, going downstairs to cook macaroni and cheese on

the stove. As she cooked, she laid out her homework

on the dining table, and set the timer for the

food. She worked on her Calculus as she waited for

the macaroni and cheese to boil. Soon the timer dinged

and she got up from her seat, and walked over to the stove,

turning it off and draining the macaroni, then placing it

back in the pot, then added the cheese packet, a little

bit of butter and milk, and stirring it thoroughly.

She soon heard her brother, bounding down the stairs,

and coming into the kitchen. She poured some into a plate

for him, and another plate for herself and they sat down

at the table. She moved her Calculus book to another

chair. Then they ate. "How was school?" She asked him.

"Okay." He said. "What did you learn today?" She asked

him. He shrugged. "Stuff. States and their capitals."

He said. She nodded. They finished their food.

And her brother started to get up from the table.

"Hey, wash your plate." She told him. He sighed and came

back and washed his plate at the sink, then placed it in

the dishrack, and left the kitchen going up the stairs

again. She shook her head and got up washing her plate

in the sink, placing it in the dishrack. Then she

sat back down at the table, finishing her homework.

After about an hour, she was done with her homework,

and her mom just came back home, and went into the kitchen

as Ashley was closing her book, and got up from the seat

to put her book and bag in her room. Her mom smiled at her

as she opened the fridge, taking out a bottle of water

to drink. "Hi, honey. Did you finish your homework?"

Her mom asked her. Ashley nodded. "And did Bobby eat

dinner?" She asked. "Yeah." She said. "Okay. Thank

you." She said. Ashley nodded again, and went up

to her room. She set her bag at the foot of her bed,

and went into her bathroom, taking a quick shower and

changed into sleeping clothes. She opened up her laptop,

and just checked e-mails, and any myspace messages or

comments she had. Then she closed her laptop, and

slipped under her bedcovers, going to sleep.

The following day she went to school as usual,

then went to the preschool to help the kids. When she got

inside, she was surprised to see Nickhun there, helping

out with the kids. "Uh, Mrs. Carroll?" Ashley asked

the preschool teacher. The middle aged woman smiled at

her. "Oh, Nickhun's helping out today." She explained.

Ashley nodded, feeling a little self-conscious, but

shook her head slightly, and walked over to where he

was with the kids. "Hey." She said, with a small smile.

He looked up at her from the table, where he was helping

some kids solve a puzzle, and smiled back. For a second

there, she thought she died and went to heaven. She

regained her composure and sat down at the opposite

side of the table, as she helped the kids find the right

pieces to fit into the puzzle. As they were both helping

the kids, their fingertips occasionally brushed together.

She felt a fluttering feeling in her stomach and

thought she was being a little silly to start crushing

on someone she just met. But when they went out to

the playground to watch the little kids, and she watched

him push his little sister on the swings, tickling her,

and making her laugh, she felt a surge of admiration

for him, as she watched the two. They went back inside

the preschool during naptime. And they sat at a far

table, cleaning up things quietly as the kids slept,

and they talked for awhile. "So, since you work

here? I guess you like working with kids?" He asked

her as they picked up the puzzle pieces putting them

back in the box. She nodded. "Yeah, they're so playful,

and they keep me on my feet alot." She explained.

He smiled, nodding. "So, what made you decide to

come back and help out?" She asked him, closing the

lid on the puzzle box. Then they both started to walk

over to the other end of the room, to put the things

back in a storage box. "Well, I thought I needed to

spend more time with my little sister, and with

college, this is like the only time I can see her."

He explained. "Oh." Ashley said nodding, and putting

the things in the storage away. "And, I kind of

wanted to see you again." He said, with a smile,

pulling out a daisy from his back pocket, handing

it to her. She was taken aback. "Uh. Really? Hey,

isn't this from the back potted plants near the

playground?" She asked him. "Yeah" He said,

slightly embarrased. She was a bit more comfortable,

now that she'd found a weak spot in him. She smiled

thanking him for the flower. He nodded and the kids

started waking up from their nap and they went back to

work helping the kids with rolling up the sleeping

mats and putting them in the shelves where they were.

Mrs. Caroll thanked Nickhun and Ashley.

"You two work well together. Thank you for helping.

You're welcome back anytime Nickhun." She told him with

a warm smile. Nickhun smiled back and said. "I'd be

glad to come back again." He said smiling at Mrs. Caroll

and winked at Ashley and she looked away for a moment,

embarrassed. Then they went separate ways, he was going

to night classes at the University and she was going

home.

After Nickhun arrived at the University, he was

walking down the hallways, when the double doors to

the opposite side of the hallway opened. In walked

Yoona, wearing a mini skirt and heels, along with

her group, Yuri and Tiffany. Guys whistled low

as the girls strutted past them. Nickhun was already

almost leaving the building, not facing them, when

Yoona called to him. "Nickhun oppa!" He sighed and

turned around, as she walked as fast as she could

without looking silly, to where he was. Tiffany and

Yuri just waited a few feet behind her, looking bored

as they checked their nails. "Hey Yoona." He said.

She smiled, batting her eyelashes flirtatiously,

as she stood close to him. He could smell the

overwhelming scent of her perfume, some cotton candy

sugary smell. "Oppa, the girls and I are having

a party. We're inviting you and the other oppas." She

said, touching his chest, lightly. He grew uncomfortable,

and backed up slightly. "Thanks. I'll see if I can go.

Well I gotta get to class." He said. She nodded,

and turned around, strutting back to her friends,

after she flapped her fingertips in a wave to him.

He waved back, unenthusiastically and hurried out of

the building to his class.

The following day, Ashley was surprised to see

Nickhun again at the preschool. "Was he really serious?"

She thought, as she sat down at the table where he

sat, helping the little kids with their coloring.

"Hey. You're back." She said. He smiled. "Yeah." He

said. "Oppa! Can you and Ashley unni play a song?"

His sister went up to him and asked him. They glanced

at each other shrugging. Then went over to the piano,

sitting down next to each other. And they did a duet

with Blue Moon. As the kids sang along. "Blue moon,

you saw me standing alone, without a love of my own.."

They sang. Maybe it wasn't the right song for little

kids. So they tried to think of a different song to play.

Then they started to play "Hakuna Matata" as the kids

sang along. Every now and then, as he had added

more chords to the left hand accompaniment, his right

hand, would bump into her left hand. He would say sorry

as she would nod, while the kids continued to sing along,

oblivious to the chemistry between the two. After

the song, they put the kids in their nap time again.

And they sat at the far table again, talking.

"Hey, I was wondering if you wanted to go to a party

with me?" He asked her. She looked surprised.

"A college party?" She said, unsure. He smiled.

"It's not one of those wild parties. The host's parents

are going to be there and everything." He explained.

She nodded. "Oh. Well, When is it?" She asked.

"Tomorrow at 7." He said. "Oh. I think I can go."

She said. He smiled. "Great. Do you want me to pick

you up?" He asked. "Sure. If you don't mind." She

said. He nodded, and she gave him her address.

"I'll pick you up at 6:30?" He asked. She nodded with

a small smile. And then they got up from the table,

going over to the kids as they woke up and helping them

put the sleeping mats back in the shelves. Then they

said goodbye to Mrs. Caroll and went home.

Ashley went home, still surprised that he had asked

her to go to a party with him. She did her usual routine

of doing her homework and making dinner for her brother

as her mom was at work, then went to bed.

She went through school, somewhat in a daze

the following morning, but knew she had to focus.

She went through the usual at the preschool, and he

was there to help again. They played with the kids, talked

as usual, and they reminded each other about the party.

Then they went home.

Ashley told her mom about the party the day before,

and she said it was okay, as long as the parents

were there. She went up to her room, and started

getting ready. She took a quick shower, and then

tried to figure out what to wear. She finally

picked out dark wash jeans, and a nice billowy

light blue blouse, with cap sleeves. She straightened

her hair and wore it down. Then she just curled her

eyelashes, and applied mascara, setting off her brown

eyes. Then she kept the rest of her look bare with

just a moisturizing lip balm. Soon Nickhun came over

and he rang the doorbell. Ashley came down the stairs,

but her mom beat her to it. He introduced himself

politely to her, and her mom was charmed as well.

"It's nice to meet you too." Her mom said, shaking his

hand. Nickhun smiled, and he smiled at Ashley as she

came down the stairs. She smiled back and said a quick

goodbye to her mom, kissing her on the cheek and they

went to his car, and he opened the door for her. She

went inside and then he went around to the driver's

seat. "You look nice." He said. She smiled thanking

him. "You too." She said. He was wearing relaxed jeans

and a dark blue polo shirt. They kind of matched in a way.

Then he took of to the party. When they got there,

music was booming loudly. They entered the place,

where people were mingling, drinking punch or dancing.

As they entered some people stared at the two. She felt

slightly uncomfortable, but they ignored it. Then they

walked to one corner of the room, where he introduced her

to some of his friends. "Ashley this is my friend

Taecyeon." Nickhun said, gesturing to a very tall, slim

guy, who was smiling widely. She smiled back, shaking

his hand. "And this is Jaebum." He said, gesturing to

a guy with a somewhat mohawk hairstyle, and a certain

confident swagger to himself. "Hey." He said, shaking her

hand. "You're not from UC Irvine are you?" Taecyeon

asked. She shook her head. "I'm a senior at Santa

Monica Highschool." She said. He nodded. They chatted

for awhile, and then Ashley spotted one of her cousins

surprisingly, but remembered that she went to UC Irvine.

She just didn't know that her cousin could be acquainted

with whoever the host was of the party. "Oh. I see my

cousin. Excuse me." She said to them, and walked over

to her ocusin. "Ashley! What are you doing here?" Her

cousin asked her, giving her a hug. "I came with Nickhun."

She explained. "Oh? I know him. He's in my AP Chem

class. Really nice guy." She said. Ashley nodded.

"But, watch out, I think that girl that's always trying

to flirt with him is around here somewhere. Yoona or

something." She said. Ashley tensed up slightly.

"Who's Yoona?" She asked her. "Uh. Ooh there she is

in that silver mini dress." Her cousin said, pointing

across the room. Ashley glanced where she was pointing

and saw the girl, and sure enough she was making

a beelin for where Nickhun and his friends were

standing. "Oh. There she goes again." Her cousin said,

in disgust. Ashley watched from afar, as Yoona tossed

her long, slightly wavy black hair, flirtatiously,

laughing and touching Nickhun's arm, as jealousy rose

within her. Ashley was holding a soda can in her

hands, and crushed it. Her cousin glanced at her.

"Hey. It's okay. He's not interested in her." Her cousin

said. She could see that he didn't really look interested

in what Yoona was saying, but still a part of her

wasn't convinced. She thought maybe he was just doing

that for her own sake. But then why did he ask her

to the party if he was just going to let her watch

girls throw themselves at him? Ashley put the soda

can down at the table. The other guys had backed away

by this time. And Nickhun glanced over at Ashley, just

as Yoona had grabbed both of his hands in her own.

Ashley looked at him, head on, and then she couldn't

take it anymore. And turned around, walking out of

the house quickly. Nickhun, roughly yanked his hands

away from Yoona and turned to go after Ashley.

But Yoona grabbed his arm. He yanked his hand out

of her grasp roughly. "Oppa! She's not even Korean!"

Yoona said. He looked at her in disbelief. "I'm not

Korean!" He pointed out. "Yeah but.." She started to

say. "You mean, she's not asian. Well that doesn't

matter to me!" He said quickly then ran out of

the house, to catch up with Ashley.

Ashley walked down the sidewalk, as the neighborhood

was on a hill. And she had to slow down in her walk,

or she might trip. She was hurt and confused, wondering

if he had just been a player. Just something to tell

his friend about, that he had gotten a senior in highschool

to fall for him. Tears started to fall down her face,

and she wiped them away quickly. "Ashley!" She heard

him call after her. She couldn't run down the hill.

So she sighed and turned around. "What?" She said to

him, her voice turning cold. He sighed. "What

happened there with Yoona, I.." He started to say. She

held both her hands up. "It doesn't matter. It's none

of my business." She said. He shook his head. "No.

I don't like her. I should've pushed her away a long

time ago. I'm sorry." He said. She just looked at him.

"What else am I supposed to say?" He asked her. She

shrugged. He sighed. "Okay. Just listen to me. Please."

He said and started to sing.

"I know I should'nt have let her

Get that close to me

Saying "No" isn't always that easy

But I didn't like it when she touched me

I should've pushed her away

And I know I've said sorry lately

But I mean it with my heart

She just doesn't do it for me

She's nothing like you are

You're everything to me

She doesn't have what I need

Please believe me when I say I like you

'Cause you're everything to me. "

Ashley looked up at him, in disbelief. "You like me?"

She said, in surprised. He smiled. "Yeah." He said softly.

She looked down at her shoes for a moment, processing

everything that had just happened then looked back up

at him. "I like you too." She said, with a small smile.

His smile grew wider, and he took both of her hands in

his. They just smiled at each other for a moment. then

he stepped forward, enclosing the space between them,

and he leaned close to her face, slowly. She closed

her eyes, as his lips met her own, softly.
