then sighed at having to beat up another person, she
raised her arm back, to punch ChangMin, but he quickly
blocked her hit, and he pushed her arm down.
She was surprised. No one had ever blocked her hit
before. And the rest of the people in the hallways
gasped as well. And one guy said. "That must be why
they call him Choikang ChangMin." SoonYi scoffed
at this. "Mwoh? Choikang?" She said. He let go of
her arm, and shrugged. "Yeah, but I really don't
hit people. They just call me Choikang ever since they
saw me hit a hammer down really hard at the carnival
one time." He explained. SoonYi shook her head.
Then looked up at him, confidently. "Look. I'm not
apologizing. I'm sure your sister can afford plastic
surgery for whatever injuries I caused to her pretty
little face. Ah rah suh?" She said derisively.
"OOOH." The crowd said, hearing how harsh her
comment was. But ChangMin didn't even flinch.
"Okay. I understand. I'm sorry to waste your time
Miss Yoon." He said politely and even gave a little
bow, and then turned, and started to walk down the hallway
leaving her campus. A lot of girls started whispering
loudly, as SoonYi stood there, dumbfounded.
"No. Guy had ever been able to keep his face straight
when she tried to diss their family or tell them off."
SHe was surprised. "OMO. Isn't that MinAh's older brother?
The one that goes to KyungHee University?" "Kyaa. He's
so cute!" "What was he doing talking with SoonYi?"
Another girl said. SoonYi finally regained her composure
and glared at the girl who commented that. The girl
quickly cleared her throat and scurried off as did
the rest of the girls. "Miss Yoon. Please report to
the office. Immediately!" The secretary announced.
SoonYi sighed. "Aish. What now?" She wondered and
walked to the office again. When she went inside,
the secretary pointed for her to go to Miss Jung's
office. She went in and sat down. "Miss Yoon. I've
come up with an alternate punishment for you. You
are to now serve community service hours cleaning
at KyungHee university. You are to go there, and
be courteous to the teachers there, you are to
clean the boards, wash the tables, take out trash if
necessary, or sweep the floors. You are to do this
for three months. Are we clear?" Miss Jung asked her.
SoonYi couldn't believe it. Three months of cleaning?
KyungHee university? Why did that name sound familiar?
She shrugged it off. "But Miss Jung I.." SoonYi
started but was interrupted. "It's either you do this,
or keep your academic probation on your permanent record.
And not many colleges will accept you with that
on your record." Miss Jung clarified. SoonYi sighed.
"Fine." She said, reluctantly. "Good. You start today
right after schoo. Here's the address. And please
try not to get into trouble there." Miss Jung said.
SoonYi nodded grabbing the slip of paper from her,
then left the office going to her class.
After school ended she drove over to Kyunghee
University. She walked into the office there, and
was directed on where to go. She was to clean the
chalkboards in room 304. She was handed a bucket and
a sponge, and gloves if necessary. She rolled up the
sleeves of her hoodie and walked over to the classroom.
"Miss Kim?" She asked the teacher at the desk.
The middle aged woman looked up. "Yeh? Are you SoonYi?"
She asked her. SoonYi nodded. "Come in. I'll be going
to break, but I'll be back in about an hour." She said.
SoonYi nodded and the teacher left the room. She
set the bucket down on the ground along with
the sponge and gloves on a school desk for a moment,
then took out her ipod, and put the headphone on, then
started to sing as she got the sponge back and started
wiping down the chalkboards.
"So what am I supposed to not have an opinion?
Should I keep quiet just because I'm a woman?
Call me a bitch cause I speak what's on my mind
Guess it's easier for you to swallow if I sat and smiled
When a female fires back
Suddenly big Talker don't know how to act
So he does what every little boy would do
Making up a few false rumors or two
That for sure is not a man to me
Slanderin' names for popularity
It's sad you only get your fame through controversy
But now it's time for me to come and give you more to say
[CHORUS]
This is for my girls all around the world
Who have come across a man who don't respect your worth
Thinking all women should be seen not heard
So what do we do girls,
Shout louder!
Lettin 'em know we're gonna stand our ground
So lift your hands higher and wave 'em proud
Take a deep breath and say it loud
Never can, never will, can't hold us down"
ChangMin was walking down the hallway after he
was done with his classes, when he heard someone
singing in Miss Kim's room. They had a very strong and
powerful voice, he had to admit. He decided to go
and see what was going on. He peeked into the classroom,
and saw SoonYi with her back facing him, singing and
cleaning the chalkboards. She finished the song and
took of her headphones. And he took this time to knock
on the open doorway. She turned around, and looked
surprised to see him. "SoonYi?" He said, surprised
to see her as well. "ChangMin right? Look before you
say, anything, it just happened that I was assigned
community service here." She said. He smiled and held
up his hands in front of him. "I wasn't going to say
anything." He said. SoonYi rolled her eyes. This guy
was really getting to her. "You know, I couldn't
help but hear you sing when I was passing by. You
have a really good voice. Have you ever thought about
trying out for a play or something?" He asked her.
SoonYi was too tired to give one of her sassy remarks,
so she just shook her head. "You should think about it."
He suggested. "I don't know." She said, unsure.
"No pressure. Just suggesting. See you later." He said,
and left the classroom. She went back to cleaning the
washboards and went home for the day.
And every day that she had school, and right after,
when she'd go there for her cleaning, Miss Kim would always
leave on her break, and ChangMin would come in. The second
day, he had come in, and started helping her clean the
desks, which she shrugged off, not wanting charity.
But eventually she relented. Slowly her cold tough
exterior, was starting to go away. At least, when she
was with him. But when she was still at her old school,
she still snapped at classmates, but at least she didn't
talk back to her teachers anymore. Miss Jung was very
pleased at this, and thought her community service
was doing her good.
The very last day of her service work, she
came into the room, and Miss Kim left. And she
started to wiped off the chalkboards, and clap the
erasers. ChangMin came in a few minutes later, and
joined her in clapping the erasers. "Oppa?" She said.
"Yeah?" He said, glancing at her as they cleaned the
chalkboard. "Today's my last day of community service."
She told him. "Oh. That's great right? You get to
have your free time back and everything." He said with
a smile. She smiled slightly, but she would miss him.
"Yeah." She said. They finished clapping the erasers
and wiped down the chalkboard, then they wiped down
the school desks, and straightened them out. Then
they were done. But then Soon Yi remembered something.
She had to take down the flag, and dust it out. They
got out the ladder and she climbed up to the second
to the last rung on top, then started to pull the
flag off of the stand, when the ladder gave way,
and started to close, and she lost her balance,
and let out a small shriek, as she fell, and expected
to hit the ground, but did not. ChangMin who was
standing watch, caught her around the waist, in his
strong arms, and gently brought her down. They stood there
akwardly, as she her back was facing him, with his arms
still around her. They said nothing, and she could hear
her heart, pounding loudly in her ears. She slowly turned
around, as he loosed his grip around her. "Th-thanks."
She breathed out. ChangMin nodded, and started to let
go off her. But she quickly leaned in, pressing her lips
against his quickly and then pulled back. He looked
at her, surprised. She instantly scolded herself in her
mind, for acting impulsively. "Oppa, I'm sorry I-.."
She trailed off. But he put his arms around her again,
and leaned in, kissing her back. After a few seconds,
they broke apart. She blinked up at him. "SoonYi,
I really like you. Will you be my girlfriend?" He
asked her. She smiled, and said. "Are you sure you
want a nappeun yeoja to be your girlfriend?" She
joked. He smiled back. "You're not anymore. But
yes, I'm sure." He said. "Well, I guess I could make
an exception, as long as you promise not tell anyone
I've softened up." She said. He nodded. "Okay."
She said. "Aren't you going to tell me something?"
He asked her. "Like what?" She joked. He made a face.
"I'm kidding oppa. Nado jo a hae. Okay we're done here.
Let's go." She said quickly. ChangMin laughed and took
her hand, their fingers entertwining and they left
the classroom, walking down the University's hallway
hand in hand.
