Chapter 1

One Last Time

Ximen and Xiao You hug each other after they see the billboard together. They are both crying. Xiao You is crying because she knows that this is the end of the line for her, that after this she has to go on with her life without Xi Men. Xi Men, on the other hand, sheds his tears because he realized how stupid he was with Xiao Gen yet he still can’t decide whether he is ready or not to commit himself to Xiao You.

“So I guess this is it, huh” XY said, breaking from Xi Men’s embrace.

“XY, I don’t know what to say. This means a lot to me,” these were the only words XM could muster as he wipes Xiao You’s tears away with his hands.

“You don’t have to say anything Xi Men, it’s enough for me that I finally see your eyes smiling – really smiling – for the first time since I met you.” XY reassured him, holding his hands.

They just stand there, staring at each other.

Please tell me to stay and I’ll never return to Canada again…

Please tell me that you’re not giving up on me and that you’ll stay with me here in Taiwan….

But instead of saying what they want to say, they just kept quiet…not knowing that those words might have changed everything.

Xiao You gives a sigh and bends her head. “I better go now. I’ll be leaving for Canada in 3 hours and I haven’t packed my things yet.”

“You’re leaving today? Why are you leaving so soon?” XM asked bewilderedly but still not letting go of her hands.

“I took a round trip ticket and today’s my schedule to go back there. That’s why I’m in a hurry to let you see this because I won’t be here tomorrow at this same time. And there’s no reason for me to stay longer, I’ve already accomplished my mission.” She said with a forced smile.

XM could not say anything. Instead, he took out a charm bracelet from his pocket and put it in XY’s hands. XY could only look at it, then she looked at XM, her eyes questioning.

“That’s for you, a remembrance.” I bought that after you left for Canada. You were the first thing I remembered when I saw that on display. It has been with me ever since, everywhere I go. He wanted to add but he felt like there was a big lump in his throat that’s stopping him to say so.

“Thank you, I’ll take good care of this….wait, I don’t have anything to give you…” Xiao You desperately searches for something inside her bag but she couldn’t find one.

“It’s ok XY, you don’t have to give me…” XM was saying but he stopped when he saw XY removing a silver-star brooch from her blouse.

“Here, take this. This is my lucky charm.” She extends her open palm, where the brooch is resting, to XM.

“No, I can’t take that. It’s special to you.”

“I want you to have it. I don’t need it anymore because my job’s done here. And I want this star to guide you.” XY insisted placing the star on XM’s hand. XM could not say a word, he’s just staring at the star.

XY could feel fresh tears forming in her eyes. She was able to temporarily stop them from falling but she knows that she could not hold them that long. So before they fall, XY hugged XM tightly one last time, kissed his cheek, said a soft “Goodbye” to his ears, then left the building.
