“Aya-chan, what’s wrong?” Jaejoong asked but earned no reply as Aya just remained her view to that direction. After a moment, she turned to look at him with her smile widen more.
“Kazuki. Can we go there for a sec?” Aya said, pointing a finger to the direction she was looking towards just now. Jaejoong gave a nod and she brighten her smile more.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jaejoong placed their stuff down under the tree as Aya walked towards the facing of the sea. He didn’t follow her and just leaned against the tree with his hands folded upon his chest, watching her.
Aya stared out at the horizon by the sea with a smile. She closed her eyes for a moment to feel the breeze brushing passed her face and breathed in the air slowly, feeling relax with the calm scene before her.
As her eyes lifted open once again, Aya dug her hand into her shirt and pulled out a whistle attached to a thin black strap hung around her neck. She lifted it to her mouth and in one deep breath, blew hard on it and the sound spring out to the horizon before slowly fading in the air it lingered.
This time, Jaejoong made his way to her and stopped just nicely beside her. Squinting his eyes to the whistle now held on Aya’s palm, he couldn’t help thinking how awfully familiar the object was.
“That’s… my whistle.” The words finally uttered from his mouth after recalling it.
“Of course it is. You gave it to me.” Aya tilted her head to look at Jaejoong.
“Right… I mean… you still kept it.” Jaejoong changed the structure of his words.
“Yes, and I always come here to blow it.” Aya shifted her view back to the horizon as she reminisced the time she saw Kazuki here.
She remembered looking everywhere for him and finally found him facing the horizon of the sea. His face then… was filled with heavy feelings, like he was thinking of something deeply or was thinking about something precious he had long lost – short to say, the expression of a heavy heart.
“… You took out this whistle and blew it hard to the horizon. After that, your expression seems… lighter. Like a weight was just lifted. I remembered you telling me this whistle was given to you by a person very important in your life. When he gave it to you, he told you-”
“When you blow this whistle, I will come to you… no matter how far we are apart.” Jaejoong unexpected muttered before Aya could finish.
“Yes. That was the exact words you said then.” Jaejoong just flashed her a weak smile.
Aya took hold of his hand and placed the whistle on his palm. Jaejoong lowered his gaze and stared at the whistle on his palm, twisting and turning it slightly with his other hand. It was coming back to him now. This whistle… he gave this to Jaejun just as his father passed it down to him, repeating the same words his father once told him. His mind suddenly flashed by the image of the car crash that took their parents away from them, leaving them to be the only ones in this world with only each other to depend on.
Jaejoong squinted his eyes tightly to recall everything else that had left hidden all these years, but sadly the memories were still like broken pieces of glass. It will be hard to put all shattered pieces back to its original mirror form.
“Who were you looking for then?”
“Huh?” Jaejoong snapped from his thoughts as he shifted his gaze to Aya looking at him earnestly.
“Oh… erm… my family I guess.” Jaejoong answered absently as he continued staring at the whistle on his palm.
“Mr and Mrs Uemura?” When Jaejoong didn’t respond, Aya presumed her guess was wrong and tried again.
“Your real family?”
Jaejoong tore his gaze from the whistle and looked with bewilderment at Aya.
“Ka- I mean I… told you that right?” Jaejoong asked. Aya just nodded.
Jaejoong took another glance at the whistle before returning back to Aya.
“What else did I tell you?”
“Can’t you remember what you said?” Aya chuckled incredulously.
“Sometimes we remember the things people told us more easily than those of what we ourselves know and said.” Jaejoong said.
“Well… you told me everyone has an other self; a self that protects the most fragile part of you. To masked a tough outer so you will not be vulnerable to those intending to harm you. But you made a mistake before and abandon your other self. So now you are using the whistle to find him back, to guide him back to you.”
Aya took the whistle from Jaejoong and blew it once more to the horizon.
“When I ask you what you meant, you didn’t reply and instead told me you want to be my other self. To protect me from any harm, and to cherish what I am. You gave me this whistle cause you say as long as I blow it, no matter how far you are, it will guide you to me no matter how long it takes. And it really did work. You are back to me now.” Aya flashed a bright smile to her face once she finished. She then extended her palm with the whistle on it to Jaejoong.
“Now you can have it back.”
Jaejoong pushed her hand back and Aya looked confused at him.
“You can keep it. You will need it soon enough.” Jaejoong muttered the last part as he looked away from her but it was still heard by Aya.
“Kazuki… what are you saying? Are you going somewhere again?” Aya ask worriedly. Jaejoong smiled as he returned back to look at her and reached a hand to her cheek, rubbing his thumb lightly on her cheek.
“Silly girl. I am just saying you could always use this to summon me to you. So why give it back to me.” Aya smiled. Realizing the affection he was showing, Jaejoong quickly reel back his hand and turned away to the tree.
“Let’s get back then. Your mother will be worry.” Jaejoong started gathering the things and Aya went to help as well. Just then, their hands touched when both reached out to the painting and Jaejoong promptly pull back his hand and averted his face.
“You can carry that if you want. Let’s go.” Jaejoong walked ahead after finished said that, leaving Aya to hurry grabbed her stuffs and followed behind him.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Kazuki… Kazuki!”
Jaejoong regained himself when he realized he was spacing out again.
“Are you okay?” Aya asked in concern.
“I am fine.” Jaejoong answered while forcing a smile to his face.
“You look pale. Are you sick?” Aya reached a hand to touch his forehead but Jaejoong flinched from her touch.
“I am fine!” Jaejoong repeated grumpily. When he noticed he had frightened her, Jaejoong sighed softly before speaking more gently.
“I am fine. I just don’t like worrying you.” He explained.
“Maybe I am just a little tired. I will put these into the art room for you before going to my room for a rest.”
Jaejoong didn’t wait for Aya to answer him anything and was already heading to the art room without even a second look at her. Aya just watched him with a worried look on her face.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jaejoong furrowed his eyebrow and stared at his family photo lifted to his face as he leaned his back against the wall, sitting on his bed.
After seeing that whistle Jaejoong can’t help thinking about his family again and trying to recall all the memories with Jaejun that were lost.
‘Why can’t I remember them all?’ Jaejoong knocked his head a few times as he closed his eyes to think.
Just then, a knock on the door diverted Jaejoong’s attention.
“Uemura-kun. Can I come in?” It was Aya’s mother.
Jaejoong quickly slid the photo underneath his pillow before asking her to come in.
“Hope I am not disturbing you, Uemura-kun.”
“Not at all, Mrs. Ueto. You need anything?” Jaejoong shifted himself a bit to the side to leave a spot for Mrs. Ueto to sit beside him by the bed.
“Just want to have a little chat. So how are you getting used to here? I don't know if your lifestyle has changed since you were away. Hope everything suits for you to live comfortably. ”
“You have been very kind to me Mrs. Ueto. I can’t thank you enough.” There was a moment of silence between them before Aya's mother spoke up.
“Hope you don’t mind me asking this. I hope everything is fine with you and Aya.”
Jaejoong just remained silent with his head lowered.
“I know 3 years isn’t really a short period nor is it long, but maybe being apart like that made everything seems a little awkward between you two now. I mean… look at you now. You looked like a whole different person from when I last saw you.”
Jaejoong felt like he choked on his own saliva and uttered a few coughs.
“Aya has been the same since 3 years ago… The same carefree… the same innocent… the same fragile little girl, that after so long still waiting for the one she loves the most to be with her once again.”
Jaejoong just remained silent; his eyes not daring to meet hers.
“I don’t want to be nagging and blabbering like an old hag. All I have to say is you don’t have to restrain whatever feelings you have inside. Instead of keeping it all in, I think you will feel better letting it flow out naturally.”
Aya’s mother patted Jaejoong’s hand lightly and Jaejoong lifted his gaze up to her.
“Don’t let yourself stop you from being who you really are.” Jaejoong just nodded mildly at her words.
“Kaa-san.”
Jaejoong and Aya’s mother both diverted their attention to Aya standing by the door.
“What are you doing in here?” Aya asked.
“Just doing a little bonding with my son-in-law.” Aya blushed from her mother’s words.
“I never agreed to marry him.” Aya promptly dashed off after said because her face was flushed red like a tomato. Aya’s mother chuckled at her daughter’s reaction.
“That’s how she is. As innocent as always. I really hope she can find someone that could take care of her and protect her well. You know what I mean right?”
Aya’s mother gave another pat to Jaejoong’s hand before standing up and walked out of his room.
After she left, Jaejoong leaned back against the wall and sighed deeply. As a killer, he has always been the bad guy. It had never bothered him who his target was and how cruel his ways might be to achieve his mission. But why was he feeling so heavy on this now?
Jaejoong slowly close his eyes, attempting to take a short nap to clear his mind off things for the moment. No long have his eyes shut, Jaejoong already drift off to sleep and found himself in another dream.
[+Dream+]
Kazuki came running to Aya and stopped a distance away as he saw her leaning against the glass window display of a jewelry store. The expression on her face was priceless, like a little girl staring eagerly at her favorite toy. She tore her gaze away and looked toward him with a smile.
“Kazuki!”
Kazuki smiled as he rushed that short distance to her side.
“Look at that! Isn’t it pretty?”
Aya excitedly tapped a finger on the glass window, pointing to the item she was eyeing on. Kazuki followed his eyesight to it as well. There were many pretty jewelry on display, but the most eye-catching was the ring rotating in the middle. Its outer surface was surrounded by many small diamonds. Rotating around, the light shone on the ring created rainbow glister.
“Yeah. Should I get it for you?”
Aya straighten up and pink blushes were already tinting her cheeks.
“You can’t casually give someone a ring like that.”
“Ring? I thought you were looking at the necklace there.” Kazuki pointed to the necklace beside the ring. Aya felt embarrassed and instantly looked away.
“Is someone signaling the intention to be my wife?” Kazuki teased as he leaned sideway on the glass window.
“Who says I am going to marry you?” Aya countered.
“True. So it isn’t necessary to be staring at rings. We are going to be late. Let’s go.”
Aya pouted and turned around with her feet thumping the ground before storming away.
“Aya-chan!” Kazuki called out but Aya didn’t respond. He knew he had pissed her but unexpectedly chuckled in amusement instead. He took one last glance at the ring on the display before rushing off after her.
[End dream]
Jaejoong flashed his eyes open that instant and sat up. He was seeing things through Kazuki’s eyes in the dream. But was it really a dream or did it really happen?
Jaejoong shifted to look at the drawer of the cupboard beside his bed. Somehow he had a hunch telling him to open it. He reached his hand to the drawer and pulled it open. Much to his surprise, there was a small red box in it.
Jaejoong took out the small red box before closing the drawer back shut. He held it close to his face, turning it around as he scanned it.
Thinking it through, Jaejoong decided to open it and saw a ring inside. It wasn’t just any ring. It was the ring he saw in the dream – the one Aya was eyeing on.
Jaejoong took the ring out of the box and picked it up to eye-level. A smirk made its way to his face as he clenched it in his fist.
“Perfect.”
