Chapter 18

- A secret can't be kept... for long -

“Yeon Hee…? Yeon Hee!”

Yeon Hee didn’t know she was spacing out all the way, letting her feet led her back to the dining room. She looked up at Siwon and saw him staring worriedly at her.

“Yeon Hee, are you okay? You look a little pale.”

“I am fine.” Yeon Hee answered, forcing a smile to her face to assure Siwon that she was fine.

“You didn’t pass the dessert to my father?” Siwon asked, arching an eyebrow at the plate of dessert still held on Yeon Hee’s hand.

“Oh, he was… erm… busy. I just remembered I have to go somewhere. I will be leaving now.” Yeon Hee said in sort of a hurry as she quickly placed the dessert on the table before turning to the direction of the door.

“Let me send you off.” Siwon offered but Yeon Hee looked back at him with a shook of her head in refusal.

“I can take care of myself, remember? See you tomorrow Siwon.” She leaned in to give a quick peck on Siwon’s cheek before leaving through the door.

Just then, Ji Sung came down the stairway and bowed slightly to Siwon before leaving as well. Mr. Choi came down followed after and wandered his eyes around for the sight of Yeon Hee.

“Where is Yeon Hee?” He asked when he reached the bottom of the stairway.

“She left on urgent matters.” Siwon answered casually as he made his way to the table in the dining room, taking his seat back facing his plate of dessert.

“Appa.” Siwon called out when Mr. Choi was about to head to the couch in the living room.

“Yeon Hee gave you permission today to have some dessert. She went up earlier but you were busy.”

“Busy? She said that?” Mr. Choi was feeling suspicious on something.

“Erm… yeah. You can eat your dessert here… with me… if you want.” Siwon cleared his throat after he said that, feeling weird why he was nervous.

Although it wasn’t much of an invitation, Mr. Choi was happy that Siwon was speaking up to him first, trying to close up the gap. He made his way to the table and sat at the chair beside Siwon. Taking a bite of his dessert, it somehow tasted especially sweet that night.

Meanwhile… just after Yeon Hee stepped out of the outer gate of the Choi mansion, she turned a corner with her pace quicken as she took her phone out of her bag. She dialed in the desired number before lifting the phone to her ear.

“Jaejoong. Meet me at the alley last time. We need to talk.” Yeon Hee spoke in a serious tone.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeon Hee leaned her back against the wall with her hands crossed upon her chest, waiting for Jaejoong’s arrival. Although she was impatient, she kept herself cool and tried to regain as much of the situation she knew of so far. Not long after, she noticed a figure approaching her but she remained at her posture as the figure stopped a short distance from her side.

“We are not suppose to meet each other like this. What do you want, Yeon Hee? You sounded so serious in the phone.”

Yeon Hee titled her head to him before straightening herself and faced him with her serious expression.

“What are you doing in Osaka, Jaejoong?”

Jaejoong uttered a brief chuckle before answering.

“I told you. I came here to find my-”

“Save the crap Jaejoong. I have heard enough of your lies. What’s your REAL motive here in Osaka?”

“What are you talking about? That is my real motive.” Jaejoong answered innocently. Yeon Hee rolled her eyes. She was really getting tired of his ‘act’.

“Still won’t admit it? Let me spell it out for you then…” She paused there. Inside of her, a small hope immerged – a hope that Jaejoong would tell the truth to her first before she has to spill it all out herself. But it was a lost as Jaejoong was just waiting for her to continue, giving her that innocent look.

“You are here for another mission, aren’t you? Mr. Choi hired you to kill Ueto Aya.”

Jaejoong chuckled incredulously, still trying to act like nothing.

“Where did you hear something so absurd?” He asked. Yeon Hee’s face went bitter from that. She was truly disappointed of him, how the years have changed him.

“I get it now… That little ‘act’ at the art exhibition. Wanting our relationship to remain a secret. Mr. Choi ask more from you than just killing Aya, didn’t he?” Yeon Hee chuckled bitterly, staring at Jaejoong with disappointment visible in her eyes.

Jaejoong looked away from Yeon Hee’s gaze; his usual cold expression drew back on his face.

“Stay out of this Yeon Hee. You know nothing at all.” Jaejoong said coldly.

“What do I not know? Tell me OPPA!”

Jaejoong’s eyes widen for a brief moment before he revert back to his coldness. Yeon Hee noticed that too. He still reacted to that calling.

“Appa was willing to change although it was too late for him. Appa would not want to see you like this.”

“Do you want to know how your father really died, Yeon Hee?” Jaejoong asked as he looked up at her once again.

“What are you talking about? Appa died from illness… from depression.”

“He died from trying to avenge your mother!” Yeon Hee felt her heart stopped beating that instant but she quickly regained her cool.

“Don’t try to add into more of your lies, Kim Jaejoong.”

“Remember how you got to know of your father’s death.” Yeon Hee tried recalling and the moment it hit her, she felt as if the air was suddenly dragged out of her lungs and she was struggling to breath.

“The… the doctor told me… you… you told me…” Yeon Hee had a hand clenched by her chest when she lifted her sight to Jaejoong. He was giving her a ‘get-it‘ look.

“Yo-you are lying!!” Yeon Hee felt her tears about to fall out her eyes, a rush of emotions building up in her making her feel tight pain inside.

“He could have done it too and survive if he did not hesitated when they took a passerby as hostage and made him distracted.”

Yeon Hee shook her head fiercely, refusing to accept the truth being told now.

“Appa… Appa died from illness…He… he must have…” The tears chocking in her throat made the words hard to come out.

“I will not go soft as he did. I will never let any feelings interfere my mission. That’s how a killer should be and that’s who I am.”

Yeon Hee looked up at Jaejoong with tears now smeared around the corners of her eyes.

“Who you are? A cold-hearted killer?! You weren’t like that before. It was wrong to have sent you off to Mr. Han. Appa thought he was trustworthy.”

“Master Lee made the right choice. He was afraid I would go soft one day so he sent me off. I am who I am now because of him. I am indebted to him; so don’t make me get you involved in this Yeon Hee. You WILL get hurt. I warned you. Stay out of my way!”

“Are you hearing yourself talking? You are just human, Jaejoong. A human with soul and feelings.” Yeon Hee said incredulously.

“I am just a devil’s apprentice. My soul is already tainted and ready for sentence in hell. Nothing can save me now.” Jaejoong’s tone was still as cold as always.

“You are not a mindless killing machine that people can manipulate to their own benefits!!”

“I am the bad guy, Yeon Hee. I was never the good guy to begin with. Don’t be so naïve, Yeon Hee.”

“This is not being naïve... This is believing… Believing the Kim Jaejoong I once knew.” They remained their eyes each other for a moment before Jaejoong tore his gaze away as he turned to the back.

“Oppa!”

Jaejoong halted when Yeon Hee called him that again.

“My Oppa is still there somewhere. Lie about it all you want. Or you won’t have reacted when I call you that.”

Jaejoong turned back and walked towards Yeon Hee. He took her hand and placed something in her palm before closing it up.

“I am not your Oppa anymore.” Jaejoong spoke emotionlessly before walking off.

Yeon Hee could only watched his back slowly fading from her sight, in this alley consumed in darkness. She opened her palm and stared down at the object. A drop of tears unexpectedly slid down her cheek to the object as she reminisced the past – her childhood with her Oppa.

[+Flashback+]

The bullet flew from the gun accurately hit the empty can and it fell to the ground.

“Oppa! That was so cool!” Young Yeon Hee clapped her hands together in excitement.

“Dongsaeng, watch this!”

Jaejoong threw another can up the air, aiming his gun at it and shot it just as accurately.

“Wah! Oppa is awesome!” Yeon Hee squealed.

“Okay you two. Come over for tea.”

Both Jaejoong and Yeon Hee whipped their heads towards Mrs. Lee and the smiles on their face widen seeing the delicious treat placed on the table. They raced each other to the table and suddenly started their game of chase as they ran around Mrs. Lee.

“Stop it now. You gonna make your Umma dizzy.” Mr. Lee came out just then to join them.

“Oppa started it!” Yeon Hee accused firsthand, hiding behind the shelter of her mother. Jaejoong narrowed his eyes at her and she replied with a stuck of her tongue out.

Mr. Lee chuckled seeing the playfulness of the two. He went over to Jaejoong’s side and when his hand was placed on Jaejoong’s shoulder, Jaejoong looked up at him. Once caught Jaejoong’s attention, Mr. Lee bent down slightly to meet Jaejoong at face level.

“Jaejoong, I have something important to tell you.”

“What is it, Master Lee?”

“I think it is about time you really get into the field. I have a friend that’s willing to take you in to help me train you. For someone your age, you master the skill of using the gun pretty well. I am sure you can far exceed my standard soon if you were given the chance to explore out there, to get some real experience.”

“When will I be leaving?” Jaejoong asked bluntly.

“As soon. Probably tomorrow.” Mr. Lee answered. Hearing that, Yeon Hee frowned and went to her father’s side.

“That’s too soon. Yeon Hee doesn’t want Oppa to leave.” Yeon Hee tugged at her father’s hand and pouted.

“Yeon Hee dear.” This time, Mrs. Lee came to her side.

“Jaejoong is growing up now. He is going to have his own life. You can’t expect him to play with you forever.” When Yeon Hee looked up at her mother with that pout of hers, her mother chuckled and pinched her cheeks lightly.

Out of a sudden, Yeon Hee ran into the house. Mr and Mrs. Lee exchanged worried looks. They never knew how attached their daughter were to Jaejoong. Maybe it was wrong of them for neglecting Yeon Hee’s feelings in this issue.

Just then, Yeon Hee came dashing back out and took hold of Jaejoong’s hand. Placing something on his palm.

Jaejoong stared down at it and saw it was a flat star origami, with a hole in the middle; kinda looks like one of those Japanese shuriken.

“Oppa better keep this! Don’t you ever lose it!” Yeon Hee said warningly.

“What if I return it to you one day?” Jaejoong asked.

“Don’t you dare return this to me! If you do, you are not my Oppa anymore!” Jaejoong can’t help his laugh from the angry face Yeon Hee was giving him.

“Arasso Dongsaeng!” He ruffled her hair slightly and she giggled.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The ringing of her phone felt like stinging pain piercing through her ears. Her eyelids felt heavy as she tried to lift them open before she pick up the call. It was as if she just had a very exhausting dream. The memory of last night was still blurry in her mind.

“Hello?” Yeon Hee’s voice was scratchy, like she just had a rough night.

“Yeon Hee ah.” The sound of that familiar voice sprang her from her mood.

“Siwon, good morning.” She greeted him with a more proper tone.

“Why didn’t you pick up my call last night?” Siwon asked worriedly.

“Last night?” Yeon Hee moved the phone away from her ear and glanced at the screen, noticing the ‘miss call’ symbol above.

“I guess I was just too tired after I got home yesterday. Sorry for worrying you.” She said while brushing her fingers through her hair.

“You went off in such a rush last night. What happened?”

Silence lingered between them as Yeon Hee just bit her lips, thinking about a proper answer while Siwon was waiting patiently by the other line.

“Siwon. I…”

“Yes…?”

Yeon Hee wanted to tell everything to Siwon. But giving much thoughts to it, she know if she told Siwon, he would go rushing to Jaejoong’s side and practically beat him to death and his relationship with his father would turned to the utmost worse state than ever before. Maybe she should try talking with Mr. Choi and settling things her way. She would try her best to convince Mr. Choi on a way that won’t involve having to kill Aya.

“I am pretty tired. So I’m thinking of just resting at home for the whole day today. I hope you don’t mind.”

“Okay. I will come over later to see what you might need.” Siwon suggested.

“That won’t be necessary. I just need my rest. I will see you tomorrow, okay?”

Yeon Hee could hear the soft sigh from Siwon before he agreed. Yeon Hee let a smile to her face and said goodbye before ending the call.

As she slide the phone shut on her hand, her eyes stared out to a thought. She got up from her bed and did a brief wash-up before taking her coat and hurried out of the door.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Master. Miss Lee is here to see you.”

Mr. Choi stared up from his documents, giving a nod to his servant before the servant dismissed himself. Not long after, there was a knock on the door before Yeon Hee appeared before his sight.

“Yeon Hee sshi. Why are you doing here? I don't think it is my time for checkup yet. Not out dating with Siwon?” Mr. Choi asked with a smile.

“Uncle Choi, is there no other way?” Yeon Hee bluntly went to her point.

“What are you talking about, Yeon Hee?”

“Why does things always have to resolve to that way for you? Aya never did anything wrong. She doesn’t deserve her fate to be set like that.”

“You eavesdropped on me and Ji Sung’s conversation didn’t you?” Mr. Choi just asked in his serious tone.

“Don’t you think you are being too cruel, Uncle Choi? How could you use Jaejoong like that? Use Jaejoong for the face being the same as Aya’s fiancé. Jaejoong isn’t a killing machine… a cold-blooded monster.” Yeon Hee’s tone of voice getting higher.

"You seem to know Kim Jaejoong pretty well." Mr. Choi questioned.

"My father adopted him, trained him before he was sent off to another person." Yeon Hee admitted bluntly.

“Then you should know how it is for him. He is a killer and that’s what he does. I paid him far better than he will ever get elsewhere.”

“It isn’t about the money, Uncle Choi! This is someone’s life we are talking about! Something far more precious that money could never buy or take away.”

“Yeon Hee, you should understand by now how this society wo-”

“I don’t understand how a simple manipulation of money and power could easily take away someone’s life forever.” Yeon Hee cut in furiously.

“Yeon Hee. I thought you would understand me. You know how hard I tried to get my son back after my beloved wife’s death. He is the only thing I got now.”

“And I was just a pawn in this as well… A pawn to help you get to Siwon, while you use everything about Jaejoong to get to Aya… to completely manipulate her life in your own hand.”

“Since you know so much about this, why don’t you just tell Siwon everything?”

Yeon Hee didn’t know why she just remained silent from that, glaring at Mr. Choi.

“Humans are selfish in nature. We would do whatever it takes to achieve our objectives. You and I are the same, Yeon Hee. You finally have Siwon back to your side. You know what will happen if you told Siwon. He will go back to Aya’s side and leave you abandoned like before. I am thinking for your sake as well, Yeon Hee sshi. I want you to be my daughter-in-law and want you to rest assure Siwon’s heart will forever be with you.”

Before Yeon Hee could answer anything, there was a loud slam of the door open, diverting the attention of Yeon Hee and Mr. Choi.

Yeon Hee looked with her eyes widen in pure terror at the person standing by the door.

“Siwon…”
