Chapter 2

- Too good to be true -

“Aya-chan…” The feeling of the words coming out so casually from his mouth set him in temporary confusion; it was as if she was someone close and familiar to him.

“Kazuki!” She promptly hugs him and he was startled by her sudden gesture.

“I thought I would never see you again. Why didn’t you tell me you were coming back? Why did those guys beat you up so badly?”

No words were uttered from his mouth as he was still confused with whatever was going on here. So he just stares at her blankly as she scans him all over once checking his injuries.

“I-”

“Ara~ Uemura-kun.” Suddenly a middle-aged lady appeared by the door of the ward and walks toward Jaejoong.

“Kaa-san, I told you Kazuki would come back.” Aya exclaimed; sounding as excited as a little girl getting her first gift.

“How are you feeling Uemura-kun? The lady asked after she reached his side.

‘Who is this so-called Kazuki?!’ Those were the words Jaejoong wanted to scream out right then but he has been trained well enough to know that he should understand the situation first instead of jumping into rash decisions.

“He is much better now. He was beaten up by these few masculine guys when I saw him. I would have call the police if they didn’t stop.”

“Oh dear! Is it… Mr. Choi’s men?” The lady asked; her expression shows shocked.

“I’m not sure. I hope it isn’t.” Aya answered sadly.

{Mr. Choi? Is it the same one I know?} Jaejoong wondered as he stares questioningly at Aya. Aya caught his gaze and gave Jaejoong an assuring smile.

“I will explain it all next time.” Jaejoong nodded before turning his gaze away from her.

“Aya dear, I think we should let Uemura-kun have his rest. We will visit him again tomorrow okay?” Aya gave her mother a reluctant look but agreed at the end with a nod before returning back to Jaejoong.

“Rest well. I will come visit you tomorrow.” Jaejoong smile mildly at her and she squeezes his hand lightly before standing up. She walks towards the door and left along with her mother.

After ensuring Aya and her mother have left, Jaejoong leans back and uttered a sigh as he stares at the ceiling above. Many questions unanswered in his head and increased after seeing Aya just now, but he know where is the one source he could get some of his mystery solved.

“How are you feeling?” He didn’t notice when the nurse came in to check on him through his deep thoughts. He just lowers his gaze to her.

“When can I be discharged from the hospital?” He asked the nurse.

“We actually want to do a few tests to ensure there isn’t any internal injury we might not discover.”

“That won’t be necessary.” Jaejoong slips out the bed, grabbing his handphone placed on the table beside the bed.

“But-”

“I know my own condition. I can take care of myself.” Jaejoong cuts her off and flashes a killer smile to the nurse.

“O-okay. But I highly recommend you come back for some tests when you have the time.” The nurse stuttered, feeling her face burning and her heart skips a beat from his smile.

“I will take your advice on it.” He winks at her before he headed out of the ward, leaving the nurse still dazed there.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jaejoong went to a hotel to settle for the meantime. He got back most of his stuff when checking out of the hospital but felt odd those belonging that confirm his identity were missing.

Just as he finished his shower he heard the beeping of a message alert on his phone. He came out of the bathroom with only a trouser on with a towel hung around his shoulder as he went over to pick up his phone. Flipping his phone open, he gave a quick glance on the message before flipping the phone back shut and placed it on the table. He sat by the chair beside the table and flips his laptop open. A window pops up on the screen of the laptop showing Changmin waiting for the videoconferencing.

“Wow Hyung! What happened to you?” Changmin noticed the bruises on Jaejoong’s cheek and some part of his chest through the web cam.

“Don’t ask. What’s the urgent matter you wanted to tell me about?” Jaejoong said in irritation.

“Ah~ Okay.” Changmin cleared his throat, restraining his laughter. Jaejoong rolls his eyes in annoyance as a muffled laugh escaped Changmin’s mouth; having beaten up like that by a bunch of minor minions really hurts his pride as a professional killer.

“Check out this new information I found about your target.” Jaejoong clicks on the few files Changmin sent to him - each revealing Aya looking very close with a guy.

“Wait, do you have a clearer view on that guy?” Jaejoong asked.

“I knew you would ask that.” Jaejoong opens the latest file Changmin sent to him and his eyes widened in shock as he plopped back against his chair.

“My God.” Jaejoong said breathlessly. The guy beside Aya looks exactly like him. That eyes; the hair; those facial features; could it be possible?

“What details you have on him?” Jaejoong asked, concealing his shock and disbelief.

“His name is Uemura Kazuki. He is Aya’s fiancé, a pianist. His mother is a Korean while his father is a Japanese. He is an only child and he went overseas a few years ago to pursue his career.”

{Uemura Kazuki… So that was why she called me that.}

“Any news about his whereabouts?” Jaejoong leaned closer to the screen with combination of serious and curious plastered on his face.

“Not till now. I will let you know when I found any.”

“Thanks Changmin.”

“Have you found your target yet?”

“Private and confidential my dear Changmin.” Changmin rolls his eyes and Jaejoong smirks gleefully.

“Take care of yourself Hyung. I don’t want to see you back in pieces.”

“You are not my umma, stop nagging like one.” Jaejoong teased.

“If you can take better care of yourself, you won’t need a dongsaeng to nag you.” Changmin countered.

“Aish~ I get it. Bye!” Jaejoong closed the conversation window and got up from the chair. He walks toward the bed and took the shirt lying there, wearing it and buttoning it up slightly. He went back to the table and stares intensely at the picture of Uemura Kazuki, his hand placed under his chin.

“To find someone looking identical to you… this sure is a small world.” Jaejoong chuckled incredulously.

His gaze fixed on the picture, feeling the chill like he was staring at himself.

{{Jaejoong…}}

Jaejoong shakes his head slightly as what seems like a child voice, which sounded very familiar to him, was suddenly heard like a whisper through his mind. He closes his laptop when he felt his eyelid getting heavy and it slowly shut as he rested his face on his hands crossed together on the table.

[+Subconscious mind+]

The sky was dark and raining heavily. The vision was blurry but he could see the outline of two figures before him.

“… don’t have anyone left. I really... can take … in.” He tried to make out the words uttered by the figure, spoken in korean.

Realizing his hand was gripping tight with someone’s hand. He switches his gaze to that person and saw…

[+End+]

Jaejoong awoke with the sound of his handphone rang and the hard vibration on the table. He lazily took the phone to his ear with his eyes still closed.

“Hello?” He answered lazily, feeling a slight dizziness in his head.

“Mr. Kim. Our boss request a meeting with you.”

Feeling irritated at being addressed so formally, Jaejoong lifts his head from the table and straightens himself before speaking more seriously on the phone.

“Perfect. I’ve been expecting a meeting as well.”

After inquiring the place of the meeting, Jaejoong flips back his phone and leans hard on his chair with his face up staring at the ceiling.

{Who were those people? That scene… its so familiar yet so distant from me} Jaejoong rests his palm on his forehead as he closes his eyes. A strange feeling developed within him as his chest felt tight. Why is that scene bothering him so much? Too much left unanswered yet much was already revealed.

Jaejoong grabs his jacket before heading out. It was probably just a one-shot dream that would never occur to him again. He has much more awaits him to worry in the present.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jaejoong walks towards the pretty obvious crowd of black suited men surrounding a street lamp. No one was around during that late of the night but it was necessary to find a secure place to discuss matters, especially when you are talking about murder.

The masculine men provide like a sort of wall, sheltering their boss standing under the light of the street lamp. When they saw Jaejoong approaching, they move forward to him in fierce marching manner.

“Easy boys. I came empty-handed.” Jaejoong raised both his hands up innocently. He heard a light whisper of command and the men move aside, revealing their boss. He wasn’t the one Jaejoong met that time. The man’s hair was slightly white on areas by his ears and shows a friendly face, which wasn’t enough to conceal the powerful aura around him. Surely he is the Mr. Choi, the main man behind this all.

“Sorry about that. Old rules are hard to remove, especially when facing a skilled killer such as yourself. You understand do you?” Mr. Choi spoke politely which somewhat seems like a mockery instead.

“Of course… But even a skilled killer can’t read the thoughts of his clients and understand every move and slick on their mind.”

“Well certainly. That would make things predictable and doesn’t come as a challenge. Where’s the fun in that right?” The man gave a light chuckle.

“Yeah… Where’s the fun in that?” Jaejoong repeated sarcastically, touching his jaw and the other sore part of his face. There wasn’t any significant wound seen but the feeling of the soreness was still there.

“I already instructed the boys to take better care to not damage your face.”

“Should I be grateful of that?”

Mr. Choi laughed at Jaejoong’s sarcasm.

“I already instructed the boys to be a little more… careful on some necessary parts of you. But we can’t really avoid much if we were to make it seem more… natural. They might have packed a few heavy punches but I can assure it is just business.”

“Business? I think they find it more than pleasurable to laid a pack or two of those heavy punches.”

Jaejoong looked up at the men standing behind their boss, noticing they were trying to hide a gleeful smile on that statement.

“Care for a walk with this old man?” Mr. Choi asked politely. Jaejoong felt a little irritated from the invitation since it was obvious ‘no’ won’t be accepted as an answer. He concealed his irritation and replied with a serious nod. The man’s face lit with relief as he gestured for his men to allow them a distant of privacy as they took slow stroll around the park.

“Ji Sung has misinterpreted my intentions then. I’m sorry but it seems I might need more from you…” Mr. Choi started.

Jaejoong stared at Mr. Choi with suspicion as Mr. Choi heaved a sigh before continuing his words.

“You see, Jaejoong sshi… You don’t mind me calling you that, right? I felt a certain bond when we just met.”

Jaejoong felt weird at Mr. Choi’s attempt to form a casual relationship. He wasn’t like the other clients Jaejoong had associated with before, those clients that would emphasize on who were the masters and want every instructions done as they are pleased. This Mr. Choi is one interesting client and it set Jaejoong amused thinking where this is actually going. He nodded with a light bow of formality and Mr. Choi patted Jaejoong’s shoulder lightly.

“I’m an old man and like any other old man, my body isn’t as good as it used to anymore. My only wish is for my one and only son to take over my business so I would not have any worries when it is time for me to move on. Sadly, he doesn’t see things the way I wanted and under the influence of that… girl, he had come to find the family business improper and unlawful.”

Mr. Choi stopped his pace and placed one hand firmly on Jaejoong’s shoulder, squeezing it lightly.

“I’m really glad to have you, Jaejoong sshi…” His voice suddenly turned serious.

“My son will be back in a few days time, and when he does the first person he will go see isn’t his old man but that girl. So-”

“So with me looking exactly like Aya’a fiancé, I could use the advantage to tear up their relationship apart for good… before I have to kill her.” Jaejoong cut Mr. Choi words short with his understanding. Mr. Choi chuckled before giving a few pats onto Jaejoong’s shoulder.

“You are one smart boy, Jaejoong sshi. I expected nothing less meeting with you.”

“And I suppose you have a plan to distract your son while I make the kill on Aya Ueto.”

“Of course! While his heart is shattered, I have my way of easing his wounded heart. Then Aya’s death won’t be a bother to him at all.” Mr. Choi let a cunning grin on his face. Jaejoong crossed his hands together on his chest and stared front with an understood look.

“I’m sure you won’t refuse such a… simple request from this old man, would you?” Mr. Choi extended his hand towards Jaejoong and Jaejoong tilt his head with a side-glance staring down at Mr. Choi’s hand.

“It will cost you extra.” Jaejoong spoke cold and serious.

Mr. Choi paused for a sec before he let out a short chuckle. He reels his hand back and stretches it into the pocket of his coat, taking out a chequebook and flipping it open. He scribbles some numbers and details on one of the sheets before tearing it off the book and extending it to Jaejoong.

“Will this do?”

Jaejoong glanced down at amount of 0s on the cheque before he raised his sight to Mr. Choi with a smirk.

“Nice doing business with you.” Jaejoong snatches the cheque from Mr. Choi’s hand and slides the cheque into his pant’s pocket before walking off.

When Jaejoong had walked off quite far from Mr. Choi’s side, one of Mr. Choi’s men came to his side.

“Boss, how dare that brat disrespect you when you already lower yourself to him. Just give the word and the boys will go teach him a lesson.”

Mr. Choi lifts up his hand as a stop sign and glances fiercely at his man.

“You have done enough Ji Sung! From our meeting just now, I’m sure this young man is just as the rumors said he is – a cold-hearted killer that puts his job and payment above anything.”

Mr. Choi turns away and made his way back to his men while Ji Sung just stares at Jaejoong’s back slowly fading from his sight.

“Oh, Ji Sung.”

Ji Sung brought his gaze to Mr. Choi whom had stopped his pace and had his face tilt slightly to face Ji Sung.

“Have a few of our men watch out for Jaejoong and report to me his every move.” Mr. Choi instructed.

“But boss… I thought you have faith in him completing the task.” Ji Sung asked in confused tone.

“I said he is a cold-hearted killer that puts his job and payment above anything. That doesn’t mean I am willing to take the slightest risk of things not falling into plan. Who knows… through my observation of him handling this task, I might consider hiring him as a permanent. Jaejoong is known for his skills, just make sure he doesn’t discover that he is being observed. A man like him doesn’t like being doubt of his skills in profession. Don’t disappoint me again, Ji Sung.” Mr. Choi commanded sternly.

“Yes boss!” Ji Sung bow low as Mr. Choi walks off again.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Aya-chan, stop pacing around the place.”

Aya halted with her hands still tightly clenched together and turned to face her mother.

“Kaa-san, where could Kazuki be? The nurse said he already checked out yesterday, but why hasn’t he come here? Do you think he forgot his way? Or… or…” Aya broke off and starts pacing the place again. Aya’s mother heaved a sigh and shook her head slightly before standing up and placed both her hands on Aya’s shoulder.

“He is a grown adult. Don’t worry so much. For all you know he might be on his way now.”

Just then, their attentions were diverted to the sound of the doorbell heard.

“That might be him now. Go get the door, Aya.” Aya nodded and starts walking to the door with her fingers playing together anxiously. She knew what she was worried about. It was like a dream when she saw Kazuki again. She thought she will never see him again after no news were heard of him for the past 3 years. She even doubt herself this morning when she didn’t see him in the hospital that yesterday’s encounter was just another dream – a dream of missing him too much and hallucinating his return.

Aya stopped by the door and just stares down at the doorknob. She reached her hand out to the doorknob but paused it midway pulling her fingers together into a fist.

{Aya, what’s wrong with you? It is definitely him behind the door, trust your feelings.} Aya can’t help repeating in her mind. She wrapped her fingers around the doorknob before twisting it hard and swinging the door open but her eyes were shut together unable to resist whatever reality before her.

“You are not sleepwalking, are you? Why are you opening the door with your eyes shut?”

Hearing the familiar voice, Aya slowly lifts her eyelids open and raised her sight to the person before her. He placed down the luggage on his hand to the floor and flashes a sweet smile at her.

“Kazuki!!”
