Chapter 20

- A Step closer, yet a Step further -

“Excuse me. Are you looking for someone?”

Yeon Hee didn’t realized how intense she was staring into the classroom that she was startled by the person standing beside her.

“Yes. I am looking for Park Yoochun.” She answered politely. The person leaned back slightly and glanced observantly at her.

“You are Lee Yeon Hee. Am I right?”

She was surprised that this person knew her. She furrowed her eyebrows at him as she scanned him from head to toe. He was a pretty tall guy, wearing a pair of rather stylish looking glasses and was holding a laptop upon his chest.

“Do I know you by any chance?” She asked. He chuckled before extending his hand out to her.

“I know Jaejoong hyung. Let me introduce myself. My name is Shim Changmin. I am… what you call… the ‘geek’ of the team.”

“Ah~ Background check.” Yeon Hee instantly understood and shook his hand.

“Sorry. Old habits are hard to remove. But I hope you don’t mind me saying… I don’t think your purpose here is just simply dropping a visit to Yoochun hyung.”

Yeon Hee smiled. She expected nothing less from someone working with Jaejoong.

“How long have you work with Jaejoong?” Yeon Hee asked bluntly.

“Hmm… Almost 6 years now. Hyung is a real professional. He takes his missions very seriously.”

“I can tell.” Yeon Hee muttered. She face unexpectedly formed a frown upon that statement.

“Yeon Hee?” Yeon Hee whipped her head to the back and smiled brightly at the person calling her.

“Yoochun!”

They exchanged a brief hug when Yoochun reached her side. Changmin uttered a fake cough to get their attention.

“I guess I should be leaving now. I am going to be late for my class. Nice meeting you, Yeon Hee.” Changmin bowed slightly before dismissing himself. After Changmin has vanished from their sight, Yeon Hee and Yoochun looked back at each other.

“It’s been a long time. Wow! Look at you! You are looking more gorgeous than the last time I seen you.”

“Learn that from Jaejoong I presumed.” Yeon Hee teased.

“Jaejoong? You seen him lately?”

“I-”

A struck of the wrong key of a piano diverted Yeon Hee from what she was saying and shifted her gaze back into the classroom, smiling at the scene she saw.

Ri In pouted at Junsu as he was covering his mouth with his hand, holding in his laughter. When he saw Ri In was beginning to frown, Junsu quickly ceased even his smile and went back to teaching her with the piano. And yet again Ri In struck the wrong key, but this time a laugh escaped Junsu’s mouth. Ri In frowned and laid rapid hits on Junsu’s upper arm before crossing her arms upon her chest and pouted to the front. Junsu tried all he can to comfort his angry fiancée and his cute acts made even the watching Yeon Hee outside smiled widely.

“Junsu and Ri In make a really cute couple, don’t they? They are to be wed soon.”

Yeon Hee shifted back to look at Yoochun and smiled at him.

“I was attracted to their performance just now; Junsu playing the piano and Ri In playing the violin. They duet together perfectly. You’re lucky to have such talented pair of teachers teaching your students here.” Yoochun chuckled.

“Well, I am indeed lucky at the greatness of love. Junsu willing to give up the life of a killer to work as a vocal teacher in this small academy of mine.”

Yeon Hee’s face showed shocked upon Yoochun’s words. She looked back into the classroom and stared incredulously at Junsu smiling so sweet and innocently.

“You mean… That Junsu was once a killer?” She asked incredulously. Yoochun can’t help laughing at Yeon Hee’s shocked expression.

“Yes. He was one of Jaejoong’s teammates.” She gave one last glance at the classroom before returning to Yoochun with a sad look.

“What happened to Jaejoong, Yoochun? How did he change so dramatically?” Yoochun’s expression too turned sad before he answered.

“Jaejoong was with this casual and snobby personality when I met him again. I learned from his teammates later on that it was a mask he plastered on when he is outside of his job. Whenever he is on his missions, he would revert back to his killer self and you will see the dark and cold person within.”

“Appa shouldn’t have sent him away. Then he wouldn’t have become this… this monster and just casually killing anyone under command.” Yeon Hee was becoming emotional as her voice turned wobbly. She lifted a hand to cover her mouth, stopping the tremble. Yoochun came closer to her and laid a hand on her shoulder, comforting her.

“Don’t be like this. Jaejoong didn’t become like this just from that.” Yeon Hee stared up questioningly at Yoochun.

“What do you mean?”

“Jaejoong didn’t just accept any missions before. Only after that one mission where he risked the life of one of his teammate that he suddenly came the urge to prove himself and just accept any missions thrown at him, constantly sharpening his combat skills.”

“Risked his teammate’s life?” Yeon Hee asked. Yoochun just sighed and nodded.

“After Jaejoong completed the previous mission, the members asked him not to go for that mission with them but he insisted he was fine. But then he couldn’t give his full concentration on it and caused the injury of one of them teammate, Yunho. But it wasn’t all bad. Yunho is now retired as a killer and spending more time with his family.”

“Did something happen in his previous mission? Did he fail it?” Yeon Hee asked. Yoochun shifted his gaze into the classroom as he answered.

“That mission was a complete success, but Jaejoong learned something the hard way... He was a victim in love.” Yoochun explained.

“What happened?”

The bullet pierced through the shooting target with another shot accurately hit the same spot. Jaejoong refilled the ammos to his gun before aiming it up to the target again and shooting rapid accurate shots. His face was showing no emotions but his mind was replaying memories that were long left behind in his head…

[+Flashback+]

The door slammed open roughly caused such a momentum that the ground felt like it shook. Mr. Lee glared fiercely at the dark clothing men surrounding the place, moving closer seize him but under a solid command from their leader, they backed away, revealing to Mr. Lee the sight of their leader sitting mercilessly at the middle of the room smirking.

“Old friend… How nice of you to drop by.” He spoke with much calmness.

“Han! You set me up! I trusted you as a friend but you set me up! Mr. Lee scowled.

“Why are you being like this? I knew how badly you wanted to pull out of being a killer so I put you up to this last mission and paid you way enough for retirement.” Mr. Han spoke casually without any guilt.

“Why did you have to pull me in between the dark society’s fight for power?! If I had knew the target was a candidate to the next leader. I would NEVER have accepted that mission. You were USING me to kill your competitor! It caused me my wife’s life! Damn it!!!” Mr. Lee aimed his gun to Mr. Han’s head and all the men around aimed theirs at Mr. Lee. Mr. Han doesn’t feel threatened by it one bit and just gestured for his men to lower their guns.

“I am really sorry for your lost but I couldn’t do anything to stop it. It is your fault you couldn’t protect you wife. Don’t put the blame on someone else.”

“I'LL KILL YOU NOW!!!” Even when the click of the bullet shifting in place was heard, Mr. Han remained still and stared straight into Mr. Lee’s eyes.

Just then, the clicking sound of a gun heard on the right diverted Mr. Lee as he glanced by the corner of his eyes at his assailant. He stunned in place with his eyes widen slightly when he noticed who it was.

“You remember Jaejoong, don’t you?” Mr. Han smirked.

“Jaejoong…” Mr. Lee tilted his head to Jaejoong, only to see the cold stare Jaejoong was giving him with that expressionless face.

“Jaejoong is indeed a unique talent. Didn’t take long to train him to be one of my top killers. Look at him now. Aren’t you proud?”

Mr. Lee felt the slight pain pierced his chest seeing how Jaejoong was now. The young man looked like he was ripped off all the happiness in the world. His face was gloom and expressionless.

“Do it… Kill him Jaejoong!” Mr. Han commanded. Mr. Lee turned his head fully to face Jaejoong. Although the gun was aimed firmly at him, Mr. Lee was relief somehow that he could sense the reluctance in Jaejoong despite the cold face Jaejong was showing. His boy – Jaejoong, was still in there somewhere. Jaejoong still remembered him that’s why he still hadn’t pull the trigger.

Out of a sudden, they heard the sound of a police siren nearing the place.

“Aish! The police. Spread out.”

The men around were already running around many different directions, causing havoc in the place and also as a distraction for their leader to leave. Mr. Lee surge passed the crowd, roughly pushing anyone that blocked his path as he sprint after Mr. Han.

They stopped in a narrow alleyway when Mr. Han reached the wall at the end of the path, turning back to face Mr. Lee.

“No way to run now. Let’s settle this once and for all.” Mr. Lee moved forward with his gun aimed at Mr. Han’s head.

“Jaejoong! What are you hesitating? Kill him!” Mr. Han yelled. Mr. Lee whipped his head to the back but found no one in sight. It was too late for him to realize it was a distraction as a loud shot of the gun was heard. Mr. Lee dropped down to the ground, revealing behind him the sight of Mr. Han holding his gun out and grinning evilly. He walked towards Mr. Lee and glared down at him, kicking him lightly to check if he was still alive.

Mr. Lee groaned as he rolled carefully onto his back and stared up at Mr. Han.

“That’s why you are so pathetic; such an easy tool to use. I should thank you for sending Jaejoong to me. I bet you won’t have expected he would help in the death of you.” Mr. Han stepped down hard on the gun wound by Mr. Lee’s chest, causing Mr. Lee to grunted loud in pain.

“Farewell… ‘old friend’.” With that another shot was fired.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jaejoong was about to turn a corner when suddenly he heard the loud sound of a gunshot. He quickens his pace and entered the alleyway, landing his eyes on the figure lying in the middle of the alleyway. He quickly rushed forward when he realized who it was.

“Ja…Jae… Jaejoong…” Mr. Lee lifted his trembling hand out to Jaejoong and Jaejoong gripped it.

“I… I regretted badly for having sent… sent you straight to the devil’s mouth. My only regret is that I don’t pull out from this sooner. It… it cost me my family… My wife’s death and Yeon Hee’s hatred towards me. I… I don’t deserve Yeon Hee’s forgiveness.” Seeing the expressionless face on Jaejoong, Mr. Lee chuckled and ended up coughing blood out his mouth.

“I…I am not even… sure if you are hee… heeding anything I say to you now. This world is very dark. If… if you want to continue striving in the dark society… no feelings are allowed to exist. You can… you can never show sane before your targets. And you will never earn any love, for the life of a killer will endanger even those least close to you. Anyone can be a tool to get to you…”

Mr. Lee coughed and heaved in a breath before he continued.

“I have always treated you like my own son. Can… can I hear you call me Appa?”

Jaejoong stared silently at Mr. Lee and his face suddenly twitched from the coldness.

“A…Appa.”

Mr. Lee smiled and with the last ounce of strength within him, gripped Jaejoong’s hand and spoke his last words.

“That’s my son… Don’t let Yeon Hee know the truth of my death.”

Mr. Lee’s grip on Jaejoong’s hand loosens as his hand dropped to the ground. Jaejoong laid Mr. Lee’s body back on the ground before standing up and walked out of the alleyway.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“You are here.”

Jaejoong walked towards Mr. Han and bowed slightly.

“How dare you disobey my command just now? What have I taught you all these years? You are not allowed even the slightest human feeling when faced with your target. I had to finish up the dirty work myself.” Mr. Han grumbled but Jaejoong just remained that expressionless face, like a robot.

“It seems you need more training than I thought. Aish~ Let’s go.” Mr. Han turned away to leave but suddenly stunned in place before trembling facedown to the ground. Jaejoong walked forward with his gun still aimed at Mr. Han and used his leg to flip Mr. Han onto his back. Jaejoong was trained for his accuracy so his shot to the heart from behind had sent Mr. Han straight to his death.

“I will no longer be a tool for your bidding. That shot was for Master Lee.” Jaejoong kept the gun back into his jacket and walked away.

[End Flashback]

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Out of the blue, Aya’s image appeared before the shooting target and Jaejoong’s focus broke. He regained himself and lifted the gun to eye level, aiming it at the shooting target yet his fingers were trembling in place, not budging to pull the trigger.

He groaned as he then used two hands to grip the gun and tried again but nothing was fired out of the gun. Frustrated, he threw the gun harshly on the ground, earning the eyes of the people around the shooting field.

“Somebody’s bad tempered today.”

Jaejoong lifted his gaze up and flashed his glee smile when he saw who it was.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“What made you hesitate just now?”

Jaejoong just smiled and stirred the spoon in his coffee. Yeon Hee suddenly came and invited him for a drink in the nearby café, asking for a light chat.

“Thought of Aya?” Yeon Hee’s words instantly ripped the smile from Jaejoong’s face and stern expression replaced on as he stopped stirring the spoon. He let a smirk curved up his lips before he continued.

“That’s ridiculous.” He took the spoon out and placed it on the saucer before taking a sip of the coffee.

“It won’t be your first time falling in love during the mission.”

Jaejoong lifted his sight from his coffee and an unpleasant expression came upon his face.

“How much did Yoochun tell you?”

“Someone is catching up fast.” Yeon Hee smirked as she leaned back against her chair. Jaejoong hit the table hard before leaning forward to Yeon Hee.

“What are you trying to say?” Jaejoong spoke through gritted teeth.

“Just admit your feelings for once Kim Jaejoong. You are merely human, not a killing machine.”

Jaejoong and Yeon Hee fixed their gaze on each other for a moment before Jaejoong chuckled as he looked away and returned back to Yeon Hee.

“You will regret taunting me. I WILL complete this mission… Just you wait.” Jaejoong straighten back, flashing one last smirk at Yeon Hee before leaving. After Jaejoong vanished from her sight, Yeon Hee sighed. She settled the bill and left the café as well.

Yeon Hee kept walking forward when she felt someone following her from behind so she quickens her pace. She turned a path and purposely stopped by the glass window displays of a store, using the reflection of the window display to spy on her stalker.

“Siwon?” She twirled to the back and was met with Siwon stopping a distance away from her.

“You were following me to get evidence against Jaejoong?” Yeon Hee blurted her observation.

Siwon cleared his throat and looked away, not wanting to meet her eyes directly.

“I knew you would find that imposter after everything was exposed. It was the perfect opportunity to gain some solid evidence to back up the truth.”

“You still think I was lying to you from the start… still not believing I never agreed to and never was a part of your father’s plan… don’t you?” Siwon smirked before bringing his gaze to Yeon Hee.

“You used me and now I used you. All’s fair.”

Yeon Hee laughed incredulously. “Yeah. All’s fair.” She repeated sarcastically.

“Well, you won’t get anything from me. Jaejoong has become more cautious of me now… But I can assure you… Jaejoong would not do any harm to Aya.”

Siwon uttered a chuckle in disbelief.

“What kind of ‘truth’ you are trying to plant on me now? Do you still think I will trust the lies you tell me?” Yeon Hee knew that was coming, but it still hurts inside.

“I have always been telling the truth… I may be withholding the truth but I never lie to you. Believe me or not, I don’t have the right to control.”

After said, Yeon Hee turned away and left. She couldn’t help the rush of emotion within and lifted her hand to cover her mouth as the tears flow down her cheeks.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jaejoong went to the kitchen and saw the sight of Aya humming to happy tone while cutting some fruits.

“Need any help?” Jaejoong said as he reached Aya’s side.

“Yes. You can help cut the sushi roll there into pieces.” Aya turned and pointed a finger to the cylindrical sushi roll on the cutting board.

“Thanks!” She returned back to what she was doing and Jaejoong smiled as he went to cut the sushi.

After finished cutting them, Jaejoong glanced over at Aya and smiled. His smile faded almost instantly as he lifted the knife up to eye level and stared at it. Twirling with it on his hand, he walked towards Aya side with the deadly expression on his face. A step and a step closer he approached her but she was still humming the happy tone, without any caution.

The phone rang just then and Aya stopped what she was doing as she picked it up. She answered the other line, totally unaware of Jaejoong raising the knife up and about to plunge it behind her.

“Hello? Akira-chan.” Jaejoong was just inches away from plunging the knife to Aya’s heart from behind but he suddenly stopped his action and stretched the knife to behind him.

“Yeah sure. I am coming soon. See you then.” Aya hung the line before she turned and was startled when met with Jaejoong standing so close to her.

“Kazuki. When did you come so close?” Aya gasped with her hand lifted to her chest.

“Just a while. I have done cutting the sushi to pieces.” Jaejoong pointed his free hand to the back. Aya raised her eyebrows at him when she noticed his other hand hidden behind him.

“What are you hiding there?” She asked. Jaejoong started to moved backwards while shaking his head.

“Come on! Let me see it!” Aya persisted as she moved forward to him.

“Don’t come any closer Aya.” Jaejoong warned. Aya halted and pouted.

“Okay, fine.” Aya turned away but twirled back shortly, catching Jaejoong off-guard as she stretched her hand forward and pulled out his hand behind him. Her eyes widen when she saw the item on his hand.

“Kazuki… It’s… so pretty.”

Aya snatched the craved tomato from Jaejoong’s palm and glanced admiringly at it. The tomato was craved into a delicate flower shape, looking all too good to eat.

“It’s not that good.” Jaejoong said awkwardly, rubbing his hand on the back of his neck while his other hand swiftly placed the knife back to its original spot.

“But it’s lovely. I have to draw this down on paint-” Jaejoong snatched the tomato from her before she finished her words. She look up at him with a pout.

“Oh no you don’t. You are supposed to meet Akira now. I will make another for you when you get back. Okay?” Jaejoong flicked her nose and she giggled as she nodded. He shoved the lunchbox to Aya and turned her around, pushing her out of the kitchen.

“Hurry get going now. You gonna be late!”

“Hai hai!” Aya stopped by the door, turning back to see Jaejoong.

“I will be going now!” She said as she did a quick bow and smiled sweetly at Jaejoong.

“Have a safe trip!” Aya nodded before leaving through the door.

Jaejoong let down the smile on his face that instant and glared down at the craved tomato on his palm. He closed his palm to a fist, tightening it as it squished the tomato till its juice dripping down the gap between his fingers. Opening the trash bin, he threw the residue in before closing it. He took a piece of tissue to wipe his hand clean, smirking at his own reflection at the puddle of water in the sink before walking to his room.

Author's Note:: Jaejoong was around 21 in this flashback. In case you haven't figure it out yet, Jaejoong lied to Yeon Hee about how Mr. Lee actually died. I feel like my writing is getting worst from when I started. I am including more dialogue that it seems to be turning script-writing. >_<

I been having a rough week. Feeling useless at everything I do. I am not good at anything at all. Depressing really... *sigh*

Anyway, you won't want to hear this author blabber. There's about 5 chapters till this story end. Hope you enjoyed the story so far. Comments and criticism are more than welcomed!
