Painting of A Past, A Gift to the Future

by Phoebe a.k.a Phebs

Chapter 4

- The pianist in her painting -

Aya went to her art room; her eyes wandering around at each completed and half-done paintings in the room. She entered into the deeper corner of the room and stopped before a painting, which she placed beside the window. The sunlight beaming through the window spreads its glow towards the painting and reflecting almost half of the surface of the painting.

She lifts the painting closer towards her so the sunlight now reveals the entire painting. She had one hand caressed the texture surface of the painting as a smile curved up her lips. The painting shows a figure playing the piano in the middle of a stage with spotlight shining down upon him. The figure had his eyes closed, showing how his placed all his emotions and feeling into the song he was converting to the audience through the melody of each keys on the piano.

“Aya-chan! Hayaku!” (Aya-chan! Hurry up!)

“Hai hai!”

Aya quickens her hands to tie the braid on her left before her friend Akira grabs hold her of hand and starts dragging her off.

“Hurry up! It’s about to start!” Akira hurried Aya.

“Is this about that handsome pianist everyone’s been talking about? Seriously… if you wanna pick up boys, there isn’t any use for me to be there.”

“You will thank me when we get there!”

“Me?” Aya could have sworn she saw that thin grin on Akira’s face. She couldn’t do anything to restrain and just uttered a sigh as Akira drags her along, surging past the massive crowd like a flat pancake till they reached inside the grand hall. Akira quickly scanned through the whole place before she starts dragging Aya off to some seats at the middle of the hall.

“Excuse me! Sorry!” Akira gripped Aya’s hand tightly with her as they squeezed through some people before reaching to their seats. After they had finally sat down, Akira let out a sigh of relief but Aya was frowning at Akira, only to have Akira replied back with a sweet innocent smile. Aya starts looking around the whole place. Although the hall was quite huge, the place was still very packed up. Aya rolls her eyes, hoping the reason for this massive crowd is for the wonderful orchestra performance and not for the view of the handsome pianist the girls been crazy talking in school.

Suddenly, the lights dim down and the surrounding became dark.

“It’s starting!” Akira whispered excitedly while shaking Aya by the elbow. Aya just smiled with her head shaking from side to side at Akira before she brought her attention to the center stage.

The spotlight shone down on row after row of musicians as music started playing. The musicians wearing elegant black were playing respectively the cello, violin, flute and other musical instruments. The wonderful melody played from so many musical instruments blended together perfectly, and with such a marvelous scene before her, it makes Aya wish she had her art tools with her now to draw the scene into a masterpiece.

Just then, the light suddenly dims off to pitch black again. Whispering was heard around before everyone’s attention was drawn to the playing of a piano. Aya follows her eyesight along with the crowd to where the spotlight shone upon the center stage. She found herself almost jumped up when her eyes widened to the figure playing the piano intensely.

“Akira-chan… that… isn’t that…” Aya couldn’t hold in her surprise as her speech broke off part by part. Akira winked at her and grinned.

“I said you would be grateful of me.” Akira whispered softly enough for only Aya to hear.

Aya returned her sight to the front stage. Her gaze fixed on the person playing the piano. His fingers were rapidly pressing the keys on the piano with his eyes downcast. Aya could feel how intense he was in conveying the emotions in the music played to the audience.

She was seeing a scene through a painting, and it wasn’t just any painting – a painting she drew about a few weeks back. She was wondering why she suddenly drew something like that, and now she knew… but she was still disbelieving. Was fate really meant for her to see this coming? But why this pianist? Aya knew she needed to find out for herself.

Another song was then played by the pianist, and this time the song was accompanied by the graceful dancing of a ballerina. A dimmer spotlight now shone down on the pianist while another spotlight follows the ballerina as she dances around the stage. Aya’s gaze never left the pianist as she continues to stare incredulously at him looking like a figure out of her painting. She even tried pinching herself to assure whether she was currently dreaming.

When the whole orchestra performances were over, Aya promptly drags Akira to the backstage to find the pianist. She craned her head high and low searching for him through the compact place with people walking here and there rushing their duties. And then she spotted him and hurried to his side.

Aya was still just a short distance away from him when she halted, causing Akira to almost stumble over from the sudden break of speed.

“Aya, what’s wrong?” Akira asked after regaining her balance. Aya bit her lower lip and stares anxiously at Akira.

“I… I don’t know what to say to him.”

“Just say whatever comes to your mind. Now go!” Akira gave Aya a hard push on the back and Aya moved forward, landing nicely in front of the pianist. The pianist turned his head slightly, looking down at her curiously.

“H-hi!” Aya said with her hand nervously pushing back a lock of hair behind her ear.

“Hi. Can I help you?” He asked politely, now fully turned to face her.

“You know… funny story. I think I know you…” When he looked at her confused, she lowers her gaze from him and her fingers were intertwined together nervously.

“Well, I don’t really know you actually. You see… I think our meeting was destined. I actually drew a painting of you before I even met you. The exact scene out there just now when you were playing the piano. I was hoping maybe you could tell me why.”

The pianist stared bewildered at her before he suddenly burst out laughing.

“Well, that’s an interesting way to pick up boys.”

Aya lowered her head in embarrassment, she knew what she said was crazy nonsense. She should have seen this coming. Akira came forward and pulls Aya behind her as she glared at the pianist angrily.

“Listen here! My friend here indeed painted a picture of you that she didn’t know why herself how the image came to her mind. She just trying to find some answers but instead got some jerk like you saying she is picking up boys?! Sure, you may be a little good-looking but your attitude sure stinks. Your kinds are always like this.” Akira yelled.

“My kind?” He yelled back angrily.

“Akira, forget it. It was silly of me to say something so absurd. Let’s just go.” Aya muttered while pulling at Akira’s sleeves.

“But Aya-chan…”

“Let’s just go Akira … Sorry to bother you Mr…”

“Uemura… Uemura Kazuki.” He answered, his eyes suddenly landed on the necklace dangling around Aya’s neck. He strained his eyes staring at the pendant while thinking where he seen it before.

“I won’t bother you again Uemura-san.”

No matter how much Akira struggled, she could only obediently follow Aya away. Kazuki too was about to turn away when he recalled why the pendant looks awfully familiar to him.

“Wait!” he called out but Aya was already nowhere in sight.

The next day, a ring of the doorbell was heard…

“Aya-chan, do you mind getting the door?” Aya’s mother called out through the kitchen.

“Hai~!” Aya replied cheerfully and even headed to the door, humming a happy tune. Just as door swings open, the smile on her face drops off when she saw who it was.

“Hi… I am here to find you. Do you have a moment?” Kazuki asked politely.

“Who is it, Aya?” Aya’s mother called out again from the kitchen.

“It’s just a friend, Kaa-san.” Aya called back before returning her attention to Kazuki.

“Erm… you see… I want to ask something of you actually.” Kazuki said shyly with his hand awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck.

“What is it?” Aya asked as she stares confused at him.

“Can… can I have a look at that necklace you have on your neck?” Kazuki asked as he points one finger to her neck. Aya placed one hand on the middle of her chest, clutching onto the pendant of the necklace with a thoughtful look on her face.

“I just suspect it might be something I lost a long time ago.” Kazuki explained. Aya stunned there for a while before she lifts her hands to the nape of her neck and unlock the seal of the necklace. She held the necklace into a fist, glancing at it once before extending it to him.

“Here you go…” She opened up her fist, revealing the necklace. Kazuki picked up the necklace gently and starts observing it. After a while, an affirmed smile made its way to his face.

“Yes… It is… This is my necklace. I would recognize it anyway. Where did you get this?” Kazuki asked, that delighted smile still lingers on his face. Aya stares bewildered at Kazuki before she let a soft smile to her face and answered him.

“An… an onii-san left it to me when I was just a little girl.”

Kazuki’s face shows startled before it slowly converted down to an understanding.

“I should introduce myself properly. My name is Uemura Kazuki. Nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you Uemura-kun. My name is Ueto Aya.” Aya replied. They both just stood there by the doorway, exchanging smiles…

Aya placed the painting back down and her sight was drawn to another painting situated in a dark corner, covered by a cloth. She walks slowly towards it and paused just nicely before it. She had her hands crossed together upon her chest as she tilts her head slightly staring at the covered painting. Aya extends her hand towards the painting, about to pull off the cloth when she heard a knock on the door. Jaejoong was leaning against the door with both his hands stuffed into his jean.

“What are you doing in here?” Jaejoong asked.

“Nothing…” Aya replied. She pulls back her hand and made her way to Jaejoong by the door.

“Your mother says lunch is ready.” Aya nodded and walks passed Jaejoong. Jaejoong managed to catch a glimpse of silly smile curving up Aya’s lips as Aya turned her head slightly, glancing once more into the art room.

“What are you smiling silly about?” Jaejoong asked with his eyebrow arched up.

“Nothing.” Aya assured but a light giggle escaped her mouth. Aya knew Jaejoong had his gaze fixed confused on her but she doesn’t bother to look back with an explanation.

A young man steps out of the airport, inhaling a deep breath of the air around before his lips curved up to a wide smile. He was finally home after so many years.

Just then a limousine stopped nicely in front of him. The car door swings open revealing a man in black suit, coming towards him and stopping well back enough to give a bow. The young man plastered a serious face before brushing both side of his fine leather jacket. As he walked past the man into the limousine, the man straightens back up and went to gather the young man’s luggage into the limo.

“Young Master…” The driver tilts his head to a bow over his shoulder. The young man gave a nod of the head and the driver return back to his driving.

“I don’t wish to go home just yet.” The young man spoke.

“But why? Master has been expecting your return.”

“I didn’t say I wasn’t going back to see him at all, did I?!” The young man raises his voice, causing the man to just silently lower his head.

“Where to, young master?” The driver asked.

“To visit a friend…”
