I remembered that day like it happened yesterday. I was seven that year…
“Wow!! My little Li Yin can sing so well…”
“Of course! I will be a singer when I grow up!!” I said happily, practically jumping in excitement.
My mom caressed my face gently and hugged me in her embrace, her smile so sweet and gentle. She always loved it when I sang to her.
“I am sure you will be an excellent singer one day…” she said, rubbing her nose with mine. That made me giggle.
“Mommy… Can I hear you sing?” I asked her with my puppy-eyed look.
“Of course… Anything for my little Li Yin.” She could never resist my puppy-eyed look.
She flicked her finger on my nose once and was about to start singing when the phone suddenly rang. My mom carried me down from her lap, placing me on the chair and looked me directly on the face.
“Excuse me for a while, okay? Mommy will be right back with you.”
I watched as my mom walked over to pick up the phone. I saw the change of expression on her face as she talked on the phone. She turned her back facing me and I knew something was wrong.
She finally hung up the phone and stared at me swinging my little feet on the tall chair. I saw her eyes looking teary when she came back to me.
“Mommy, when is daddy coming home?”
“He will soon enough… I will make sure of it…” she answered me, with a sinking voice, trying to avoid eye contact with me. I pushed my mom’s face towards mine and saw her eyes looking red.
“Mommy why are your eyes so red?”
My mom hugged me tightly and I could hear her voice sounding like she was crying.
“Li Yin… remember one thing… No matter what I do, I do it for your sake…”
“Mommy what’s going on?”
My mom never replied me and just hugged me close to her. Since that day… my life changed. I later found out my dad went to set up a new family, leaving my mom with me. I never complained; my mom was the only thing I need, the only thing kept me striving till now… But sadly having her single-handedly take care of me, soon she got very ill and was hospitalized.
Now at the age of 19, I was more able to take care of myself but I wasn’t the cheerful girl I used to be anymore. On a certain day when I visited my mom, she said she would have to send me off to Korea, to a place she felt I would be better off, under the care of a close friend of hers. She had already arranged the next flight for me to go Korea, no matter how I argued she still held strong on her decision.
I never knew my life in Korea would be the beginning of a new chapter for me. I will never forget my mother’s words – All she does, she does it for my sake.
