As Lee Minwoo lay on the bed in the hotel room, he opened up the documents that Joseph passed him. He threw the documents of Eric Moon aside and flipped open the report on Lee Chae Yeon.

He read in detail… he read about how she enjoys skiing, what grades she received in school, all the way till which doctor she has seen and what sickness were they for. He spent the next few hours reading and thinking about his wife. When he was done with the report, he flipped it back to the first page and starred at her name.

Lee Chae Yeon.

Finally at 4am the day after her birthday, he saw her birth date.

“What an idiot I am” he said to himself.

Lee Minwoo stood up and turned on his computer. He logged on to the Korean Air website and booked himself a ticket back to Seoul.

The earliest flight was 7am.

(Next day)

At 1030am, Lee Minwoo drove into the driveway of his home. Armed with a box of chocolate truffles, he opened the door to his home with a light smile on his face.

“I’m home” he announced.

The maid quickly greeted him and took his bag from him.

“Welcome home Sir” Shin greeted, observing him as it was the first time he was in such a good mood.

“Where is Madam?” He asked.

“Mdm is feeding the dog in the kitchen” Shin replied.

“Feeding the dog?” Lee Minwoo thought he heard wrongly.

“Why does the dog need to be fed?” he asked Shin

“Sir, the dog refuses to eat if Madam does not feed it” Shin explained and quickly excused herself. She was worried that Lee Minwoo would flare up.

“Oh… so how did it survive before she came?” He turned around but realized that Shin had escaped into the kitchen.

Lee Minwoo took the beautifully wrapped box of truffles and entered the kitchen. There, he saw his wife sitting on the ground with the dog in her arms. He could hear her coaxing the dog.

“Strawberry, be a good girl. Just one more bite” Chae Yeon took a wooden ladle of dog food and brought it to its mouth.

She didn’t know what the dog’s name was. She decided to name her strawberry because the dog kept eating the strawberries she planted in the garden.

“You know, if you continue this, your babies will turn out to be just fur and bones” Chae Yeon continued talking to the dog, not knowing that Lee Minwoo was watching her, enjoying the view of his wife.

The dog had already smelt Minwoo the moment he entered the kitchen, but it was so lazy and comfortable in Chae Yeon’s arms that she simply tilted her head to look at her master and rested it back on her mistress’s arm.

“What’s wrong Strawberry?” Chae Yeon turned around to see what had caught the dog’s attention

Her eyes shot wide open in shock when she saw her husband.

“What are you doing?” Lee Minwoo asked a question that he already knew the answer to

“Welcome… back… Mr Lee” Chae Yeon hurriedly stood up and greeted her husband.

“I said I don’t want to be called Mr Lee!” Minwoo raised his voice. He was both disappointed and angry, at how Chae Yeon is behaving towards him.

For him, he knew everything about her. Having read her entire life history, he felt that she was so close… so close to him… but what he didn’t realize, was how foreign Chae Yeon still is.

“I’m sorry… I…..” Chae Yeon was trying to find something to say when Minwoo walked closer to her.

As he came closer to her she took little steps backwards. Minwoo saw the fear in her body movements and decided to not scare her further.

“Come up to the study after you are done with …. the dog” Minwoo wanted so much to join her in feeding the dog. He wanted to hear her talk about the dog, he wanted to know why she called her strawberry, he wanted to have a conversation with his wife.

Lee Chae Yeon waited till husband left the kitchen before turning around to look at Strawberry.

“He is just like the father of your babies.. he has too many women…” Lee Chae Yeon said to strawberries.

All she could think of was the voice of the woman who picked up his phone last night.

*Knock*

Lee Chae Yeon gently knocked on the door of the study, which was open. She could see Lee Minwoo sitting on the couch resting his head on the headrest.

“Are you still feeling sick?” He asked her and he signalled for her to sit beside him.

“Thank you for your concern, I’m much better now” she sat at the corner of the couch, a whole 20 inches away from him.

“Chocolate truffles” He handed her the nicely wrapped box

She looked at the box and then looked at him wondering what he was up to.

He looked at her and then at her wrist. She was not wearing the bracelet he bought. He thought she didn’t like it.

Chae Yeon took the box of chocolates from him, not knowing what it was for.

“You called me yesterday?” He asked her.

“Erm… yes… I … the dog was sick” she lied

“I was busy” He explained

“I understand” she lied again. Her eyes and her heart were both in pain. She knew what she heard last night and she was still very bothered by it. It was a woman’s jealously that prevented her from realizing Minwoo had change his attitude towards her

“So what’s wrong with … Strawberry?” Minwoo asked, hoping that Chae Yeon will smile when she hears him call the dog that.

“She is pregnant, violated by a male dog” Chae Yeon answered, still angry with the phone call last night. This time she is angry with all the male species that she could think of.

“Oh…” Lee Minwoo was lost for words. He didn’t know why she suddenly sounded angry. He looked at her looking at him and turning away.

“Have you brought her to the vet?” he asked

***

One hour later, Lee Minwoo and his wife were sitting outside the Vet’s office with Strawberry between them.

Minwoo secretly peeped at his wife who was starring blankly into space. He looked at his phone. *18 missed calls*

“Mr & Mrs Lee?” the nurse called out

“Yes!” Minwoo responded. He looked at Chae Yeon who had just realized that “Mr & Mrs Lee” meant her and her husband.

Chae Yeon quickly stood up and followed Minwoo into the doctor’s office.

After half an hour, they came out from the office both looking like proud parents. Strawberry was doing very well, she is in the pink of health, and the vet had said that he had never seen a happier and well groomed dog.

**

“Don’t be too nice to her She won’t be able to look after her own puppies if you continue to spoil her like that” Minwoo said to Chae Yeon.

“Can she keep her puppies?” Chae Yeon suddenly turned to her husband and asked.

Lee Minwoo didn’t really like pets all that much. Strawberry was a gift from a business associate. He played with it once in a while but never developed much feeling towards the dog. After all, he was seldom home to see it.

He looked at Chae Yeon asking him innocently about keeping the puppies. If she didn’t ask he would not have even considered keeping any puppies. If he knew the dog would get pregnant he would have sterilized her a long time ago. He did not really want any more pets. But there his wife was looking at him, with the hope that he would say yes.

“Its up to you” He gave in and said to her.

“Thank you!” Chae Yeon happily said and picked Strawberry up into her arms, giving the soon to be mother a big smile.

Lee Minwoo stood still for a second. This is it. His wife’s smile. He made her smile. That beautiful, angelic smile.

He kept up with her and carried Strawberry in his arms, taking the weight of the dog away from her.

Lee Chae Yeon happily and quietly walked beside them, feeling happy for Strawberry and thinking that in a few months, she would have puppies to play with.

***

Once they reached the garden grounds of the mansion, Strawberry jumped off the car and went into the gardens, leaving her master and mistress alone walking through the garden.

Chae Yeon was waiting for Minwoo to start walking first. She knew that as a traditional Korean woman, she was supposed to walk behind her husband.

Minwoo however, was starring at Chae Yeon’s hands. He wanted to hold her hands. Something as simple as that, would make his day.

“Don’t you have to work today?” Chae Yeon asked him.

Just when Minwoo wanted to tell her he would be spending the entire day with her, they saw Kim Jong Kook walking towards them.

The appearance of Kim Jong Kook made Chae Yeon all afraid and weak again. The sight of him simply haunts her. She turned around to look for something, someone to hide behind, but all that was around her was her husband. It was then that she remembered how scary this man she married could be. She stood still on the ground biting her lips.

“Are you alright?” Minwoo looked at her, wondering why she suddenly looked all scared. He thought that the visit to the vet had warmed up their relationship. She smiled for him earlier

“Can I go check on Strawberry, please” Chae Yeon pleaded urgently

Minwoo was lost. He didn’t know what had gotten into her. But he knew that he had to grant her request. It was the only way she would feel better. As soon as he nodded his head, she disappeared from his sight.

“What do you want?” He snapped at the approaching Kim Jong Kook

“How’s your wife?” Kim Jong Kook looked at the back view of Chae Yeon. He has evil plans in mind to get back at her.

“None of your business” Minwoo walked passed him, walking towards the main door of the mansion.

“They need you back in Jeju. You didn’t even tell the men there that you were leaving” Kim Jong Kook said

“I don’t need you to instruct me what to do.” Minwoo said feeling pissed. He could be strolling the gardens with Chae Yeon if he had not appeared.

“Well… I’m sorry, but the boys need you there. You have an appointment with the Chief Fire Officer tomorrow morning.” Kim Jong Kook stopped at the porch. He, along with the other assistants of Lee Minwoo, were never allowed to step into the house.

“Wait outside for me” Lee Minwoo said and went into the house.

***

Lee Minwoo searched the large mansion for his wife, and finally found her in her room, hugging on to a teddy bear at the corner of the room. He walked passed her dresser and realized that the box of bracelet he left there was untouched. He picked it up and walked towards her.

“Chae Yeon” he called her to get her attention.

Lee Chae Yeon wiped her tears away and turned around. She placed her only birthday present on the bed and looked at her husband, waiting for him to tell her what he wanted.

“This is for you” Lee Minwoo opened the box and pulled out the bracelet. He placed it on her wrist. It fitted perfectly. He watched her expression but was disappointed to see that she didn’t have any.

“Thank you” was all she said to him.

Lee Chae Yeon looked at the bracelet that he placed on her hand. She looked at the expensive bracelet and hated the sight of it. Seeing Kim Jong Kook earlier reminded her of why she married Lee Minwoo. It reminded her of why she had no guts to leave this man. It reminded her of what a cheap and disgusting woman she is. It was all because of money. She didn’t understand why she had to become such a woman. Once again, she hated herself, her life, and anything that reminded her of the situation she was in.

“I won’t be home tonight” Lee Minwoo said as he let go of her hand and left the room.

As he walked away, he saw her taking the bracelet off her hand and putting it back into the box. It was a first time for him. A first time he personally bought a gift for a girl. A first time he cared if she liked it. A first time he didn’t receive a kiss in return for a present he gave.
