“Shan Cai, how many children are you planning to have?” Aisha asked with a smirk as she reached out to arrange the bride’s veil over Shan Cai’s face, ready to enter the church any moment.
Shan Cai grinned and answered jokingly, “As many as Ah Si wants.”
“Are you serious?!” cried Xiao Qing, “What if you become a baby-making machine?!”
Xiao You burst into giggles. “I’m sure Shan Cai would LOVE to spend the rest of her life making babies with Ah Si!”
“Oh, be quiet!” chastised the red-faced bride. “Aisha, how much longer until we can go in?”
“Ooooh,” teased Aisha, straightening her bridesmaid dress, “Desperate to kiss your little hubby, eh?”
Ignoring Aisha, Shan Cai reached up to her father’s bow tie and corrected its position. “Dad,” she called quietly, “From today onwards, I’m not a Dong anymore.”
“GOOD!” he bellowed, “And I get to live in a big, grand new mansion and eat lots of very expensive food! Your mother and I are very proud of you! You have to come and visit us all the time!”
“Of course I will,” Shan Cai reassured him, “You’re only a few houses down the road!”
“I can hear it!” yelped Xiao You, “Lei’s playing the violin! It’s time to go in!”
As if on cue, the church doors were pulled back by several white-clad door stewards, bowing eagerly to welcome the bridal party. Shan Cai looped her hand around her father’s arm and proceeded slowly into the church hall, keeping each step in time with the music, followed by Xiao You, Xiao Qing, Aisha and the trailing layers of her white satin dress.
Immediately, Shan Cai met Dao Ming Si’s smile – the happiest smile she has ever seen – and returned him with her own. As she continued stepping down the aisle, their hearts began throbbing wildly and their gazes were locked unshakably for several stilled moments. Despite all the people watching and all the video cameras aiming their direction, in their eyes, they only saw each other. Dao Ming Si, her husband by nature and still fiancé by law, was standing there before her, his handsome face looking ever so handsome in their white wedding attire.
At the front of the church, Mr Dong handed his daughter’s hand over to Dao Ming Si, then took a seat besides his tear-stricken, insanely happy wife. “Our darling Shan Cai,” Mrs Dong sobbed quietly, “Our daughter has finally transformed into a beautiful phoenix.”
Mei Zuo and Xi Men, who were standing on the other side of Dao Ming Si, each gave him a pat on his back. Hua Ze Lei, who was sitting at the front of the orchestra and playing the violin concerto, gave Shan Cai a smile then Xiao Qing a wink.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” the Reverend began delivering his opening remarks at the microphone, “On behalf of the great Dao Ming and Xu families, I welcome you all and thank you for celebrating with us the lovely marriage of their children, Dao Ming Si and Xu Xi Yuan. May I first invite the bride and groom to take a seat.”
The couple sat down on the front bench and Dao Ming Si squeezed Shan Cai’s hand gently. “Nervous?” he whispered, his smile never leaving his face.
“A little,” Shan Cai replied, holding his gaze for a few seconds longer before looking down shyly at her dress.
“I’m sorry that I couldn’t convince mum to use the name ‘Dong Shan Cai’ instead.”
Shan Cai smiled and nudged him playfully. “It’s okay. You can’t marry Shan Cai. But you can marry Xi Yuan.”
Dao Ming Si inched closer and whispered softly against her ear, “What are you talking about? I’ve already married Shan Cai.”

“I, Dao Ming Si, take you, Sha–…Xu Xi Yuan, to be my wife…MY WIFE! SHAN CAI IS MY WIFE!”
“Pighead!” Shan Cai cried desperately, her fingers clenched so tightly by her pigheaded husband that she could almost feel the circulation cutting off.
Xi Men shoved a hand into his mouth to stop himself from laughing, while Mei Zuo roared hysterically despite all his efforts to keep his big mouth shut. Hua Ze Lei, who had joined them on the front bench, shook his head with a grin as he watched the notorious couple standing at the front of the church before the Reverend, trying oh-so-unsuccessfully to deliver their oh-so-sweet wedding vows.
“I, Dao Ming Si, take you, Sha-uuu Xi Yuan, to be my wife…my wife…my wife…”
Shan Cai closed her eyes, and for a split second, Dao Ming Si could swear there was steam coming out of her ears.
“…to be my wife,” he continued quickly, “to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, from this day forward until death do us part.”
Shan Cai heaved her biggest ever sigh of relief. “I, Xu–”
“I’m not finished!” Dao Ming Si cut her off.
“Yes, you are!”
“No, I’m not!” He cleared his throat. “And I, Dao Ming Si, promise that if you, Shan Cai, my wife, runs away, I will run after you…”
The church hall exploded with laughter. Even Dao Ming Si’s parents were amused by their son’s self-ridicule and did not notice that he used the wrong name again. After all, they have all the fame, wealth and business they wanted, and for once, they even have a very, very satisfied and obliging son. Anything is pleasing to them now.
“…no matter where you go, even to hell, even to the end of the sky or the corner of the ocean, I will run till I get you, because you are my wife which means you are mine.”
Shan Cai could not help but let out a giggle at his very weird but wonderful addition to his wedding vow. At least, she knew that it truly came from his heart. “I, Xu Xi Yuan, take you, Dao Ming Si, to be my wife –”
Mei Zuo rolled off the bench and sprawled across the marble floor, his stomach begging for mercy as he began howling uncontrollably at the scene before him.
“I’m your HUSBAND,” Dao Ming Si reminded Shan Cai teasingly. “Now, hurry up! I want to kiss you!”
Shan Cai nodded her bright red face and quickly resumed, “I, Xu Xi Yuan, take you, Dao Ming Si, to be my husband –”
“I’M HER HUSBAND!”
Xi Men slammed his hand hard against his forehead. “Mei Zuo, how exactly did Ah Si become our leader?”
“…to be my husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, from this day forward until death do us part.” She took a deep breath, “And I, Shan Cai,” she emphasised her name with a smile, “promise you, Dao Ming Si, my husband, that despite your claim that you will always love me more than I love you, I promise you, that I will love you more than you can ever love me.”
And they did not exchange their wedding rings, because they were already wearing them and were obviously both too stubborn to take them off just for the wedding service. But what Dao Ming Si did do was lift the veil over Shan Cai’s head – before the Reverend even finished the official pronouncement of their marriage – smashed his lips against her face and swallowed her mouth like it was strawberry cheesecake.
“PIGHEAAAAD!”
Oh, it was not a happy ending for our beloved couple Dao Ming Si and Shan Cai. It was only half a happy beginning…
