Chapter 5

Gifts of Friendship and Love

“Were you two planning to wake up at all?” asked Xi Men over the lunch table, “We’ve been waiting for FOUR hours! You two even woke up later than Lei! LEI!”

“We had a long night so we slept in,” Dao Ming Si explained casually.

“We stayed up past midnight,” Shan Cai added.

Everyone else choked on their food.

“WHAT?!” yelled Mei Zuo, grinning from ear to ear, “Oh my goodness!” He fell off his chair, shaking with excitement.

“Oh tell us!” Xi men continued for him, “Shan Cai, did you enjoy it?”

Shan Cai looked up from her food, clueless. “Yeah, it was a bit cold but Dao Ming Si kept me warm.”

“WOW! But didn’t you turn the heater on?” asked Xi Men, trying desperately to suppress his laughter.

Dao Ming Si looked up at their overexcited faces, confused. “We were outside and it was snowing.”

“OUTSIDE?!” Mei Zuo shrieked from the floor, almost hyperventilating. “It’s like minus ten degrees and you two decided to make love in the snow?!”

It was Dao Ming Si and Shan Cai’s turn to choke on their food. Shan Cai’s eyes were ready to pop. “NO! WE WERE NOT...NOT...!” She raised her fist at the hysterical Mei Zuo.

“Uh, uh,” he grinned, grabbing her tiny wrist, “Save your energy for the bedroom, missy!”

“Umm, we were actually just chatting on the veranda,” Dao Ming Si explained as casually as he could. But his tomato face betrayed him. “We decided to stay up past midnight,” he continued quickly, “You should all know why.”

Xiao You nodded happily. “Of course! It’s Shan Cai’s birthday today!”

“Yeah, we know,” said Xi men, “We were planning to celebrate tonight. Don’t worry, Shan Cai. We didn’t forget.”

“How old are you turning again?” asked Mei Zuo, scrambling back up from the floor.

“Two decades old,” Shan Cai replied proudly, nudging Dao Ming Si with her elbow. Then she stuck her tongue out at Mei Zuo. “Sorry to disappoint you again.”

Mei Zuo sighed. “I just hope you two don’t die virgins.”

“But Lei’s a virgin too!” Dao Ming Si exclaimed, “Why don’t you annoy HIM about it?!”

“Did I ask for your opinion?” shouted Hua Ze Lei, blushing furiously.

“That,” Dao Ming Si grinned, “Is MY line.”

“Just borrowing,” said Hua Ze Lei, “Besides, I’m not the leader of F4. You, on the other hand, should be ashamed.”

Dao Ming Si laughed and winked at Shan Cai. She turned away shyly.

Jing covered a giggle with her hand and shook her head. “Guys, I thought you’re supposed to respect your leader.”

“Okay, why don’t we get back to the important stuff?” Xiao You suggested quickly, “It’s Shan Cai’s birthday so she’s the princess of the day. Let’s respect her too.”

“Can I be the prince?” Mei Zuo asked with a smirk, pulling on one of Shan Cai’s plaits.

“You want me to bash you up?!” Dao Ming Si raised his fist, a warning smile appearing on his face.

Mei Zuo grabbed his wrist and grinned. “I said, save your energy for the bedroom!”

“Alright everyone, listen!” Xi Men raised his voice slightly, “When we finish lunch, F4 has some very important stuff to do. You girls can go and do your shopping and we’ll meet together at six o’clock tonight at the hotel lobby.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

After lunch, it stopped snowing so F4 hired a boat from the hotel to sail out for the evening. They spent the entire afternoon decorating the boat and planning Shan Cai’s birthday party. When they finished their preparations, they met up with the girls and boarded the boat for a romantic candlelight dinner.

“So what did you all think of the French dinner?” asked Dao Ming Si as he carried out a bottle of Tequila and a tray of wine glasses. The room was warmly lit with small white candles, creating a cosy and comfortable atmosphere. Soft music was playing in the background, drowning away any tension or anxiety still left in them.

“It was really delicious!” Shan Cai replied as Dao Ming Si sat down beside her. “It must have been so –”

“Expensive,” F4 sang in unison.

“It was interesting though,” Hua Ze Lei said with a smile, “We’re Taiwanese people, on a vacation in Japan, staying in the Dao Mings’ American hotel and eating French food.”

Shan Cai giggled and pinched Dao Ming Si’s cheek. “I never expected a vacation with F4 to be normal or anything.”

Xiao You nodded enthusiastically. “Yeah, I must thank you guys so much. Especially you, Mei Zuo, for covering all my expenses.”

“That’s what friends are for,” Mei Zuo replied cheerily, giving Xi Men a wink. “Besides, only you and Shan Cai keep saying things are expensive. For us, it’s nothing.”

“Anyway,” said Dao Ming Si, draping an arm around Shan Cai’s shoulders, “Let’s get to the main part of tonight. Xi Men?”

“Shan Cai, for safety purposes, I didn’t bring your gift on vacation,” Xi Men explained, “You can get it from Ah Si’s house when we go back. Two million US Dollars in cash for you to pick out some new and sexy clothes. I’ve packed it in a suitcase.”

Xiao You gasped, her eyes ready to fall out of their sockets. “Two million US Dollars?!”

Shan Cai quickly pulled Xi Men into a hug, yelling excitedly, “Oh my goodness! I thought you were only famous for spoiling your girlfriends. Xi Men, you are amazing! Thankyou so much! I can live on that for the rest of my life!”

Mei Zuo took out a photograph and placed it in Shan Cai’s hands.

“A helicopter?!” exclaimed Shan Cai, staring at the photo in disbelief.

“Yes, a helicopter,” Mei Zuo replied casually, “It looks cool, doesn’t it? You and Ah Si can fly off into the sunset.” Then he turned to Xiao You and grinned. “Sweetie, you might like to breathe.”

Shan Cai drew Mei Zuo into a tight hug, trying desperately not to scream. “You’re crazy! A helicopter?! I can say thankyou till tomorrow and it won’t be enough! And where am I going to put it?!”

Mei Zuo laughed. “Obviously not in your little hut! It’s getting delivered to Ah Si’s house.”

Hua Ze Lei also took out a photograph and gave it to Shan Cai. “A crystal grand piano,” he explained, “It’s truly the most beautiful piano ever made. And just to let you know, it’s getting delivered to Ah Si’s house too. Shan Cai, remember that time when you played the piano for Ah Si’s mum at his twenty-first?”

Shan Cai’s lips curved into a small, shy smile as the memory crept into her mind.

“I don’t think anyone can ever forget that,” said Hua Ze Lei in a deep voice of admiration.

Dao Ming Si tickled Shan Cai and added with a teasing grin, “This girl, when she banged on the piano at my mother in front of hundreds of VIP guests, I was thinking: God save us! But when she suddenly started playing ‘Marriage D’Amour’, she seriously freaked the living daylights out of me! Who would have thought Shan Cai could play the piano?!”

“Dao Ming Si!” Shan Cai retorted, “You said I played well!” Then she leapt over to Hua Ze Lei and flung her arms around him. “Thankyou so much, Lei. I’ve never seen a crystal piano before. Maybe one day you can play duets with me on your violin.”

Jing took out a large rectangular box, flipped off the lid and handed it over to Shan Cai. “I’m sorry that it’s only a small gift,” she said as Shan Cai gasped at the contents in the box, “But I hope you like these Louis Vuitton boots from Paris. Remember? Everyone should have a pair of good shoes. Because this pair of good shoes will bring you to very beautiful places.”

Shan Cai quickly pulled the shiny, white leather boots out of the box and slipped her tiny feet into them, pulling them up to her knees. “They’re so beautiful!” she exclaimed, looking up to their smiling faces, “They’re even the perfect size! Jing, thankyou for bringing them for me.”

Then everyone turned their heads to Xiao You and found her sitting on the sofa next to Xi Men, the poor girl almost frozen in a state of shock and awe. She managed to give Shan Cai a lopsided smile. “Umm, Shan Cai,” she began shakily, digging a hand into her backpack, “It’s embarrassing but I guess I should still give this to you.” Xiao You took out a thick scrapbook and handed it to Shan Cai. Shan Cai placed it on her lap and a delightful smile appeared on her face. Xiao You had covered the scrapbook with a sparkling pink layer of book wrap. She also pasted a very cute and silly photograph of her and Shan Cai on the cover; one they took while they were working at Italian Tomato. Shan Cai opened the book and read the words written on the first page: “To Shan Cai, my best friend. This book will teach you how to make lots of different cookies and cakes without burning them. Love from Xiao You.”

Shan Cai pulled her into a polar bear hug. “Xiao You, you are the sweetest best friend in the world!”

Xiao You heaved a sigh of relief. “I hope you like it. Since the time you burnt two trays of pineapplehead cookies, I’ve been writing out all my recipes for you.”

Dao Ming Si shook his head and grinned at Xiao You. “No, she burnt THREE trays. The ones she gave me were mostly burnt too!”

Everyone laughed at Shan Cai affectionately, knowing deep in their hearts how great a difference this simple but adorable girl had brought to their lives.

“Alright, it’s MY turn now!” Dao Ming Si exclaimed enthusiastically. “Shan Cai, I’ve prepared three gifts for you. The first one is somewhere on me. Try and find it!”

“Umm, nice work, Ah Si!” Mei Zuo commented with a smirk.

Shan Cai stood up over Dao Ming Si and dipped her hands into the two pockets on his jumper. As she leaned down closer to him to reach deeper into the pockets, Dao Ming Si took the chance to hold her face and steal a lengthy kiss from her soft, rosy lips. “You found gift number one,” he said, smiling cheekily up at her.

Shan Cai’s face took on a crimson hue as she realised that the first gift was his kiss. “Pighead. I think that was more of a gift for yourself!”

“Oh please!” Xi Men cried incredulously, “Get a room!”

“Did I ask for your opinion?!” Dao Ming Si blared. “Shan Cai, the second gift is already in your handbag.”

Shan Cai reached into her handbag and took out the three items inside; her phone, her wallet and a packet of tissues. Instinctively, she opened her wallet and found a gold card inside. Shan Cai froze.

“You found gift number two,” Dao Ming Si said with a smile, “And remember, it’s a rule that you have to accept birthday gifts. The card has direct access to my account. Use it all you want.”

As expected, Shan Cai opened her mouth to protest but Dao Ming Si quickly continued, “We have to go outside for the last gift.” He stood up, took her hand and led everyone out to the front of the boat.

One by one, they came out and breathed in the cool night air, immediately feeling calm and refreshed. When everyone was silent, and only the sound of the boat ripping through the water could be heard, Dao Ming Si flicked a switch. The whole exterior of the boat lit up with hundreds of brilliant little lights bulbs. From afar, it looked like a cluster of stars hovering slowly over the water surface. Shan Cai looked above and saw that some of the tiny light bulbs, which were hanging off thin wires drawn overhead, had been arranged into a beautiful meteor shower pattern, resembling the one in her house. As if she could manage no better reaction, her eyes welled up with tears, blurring her vision. Smiling and crying at the same time, Shan Cai watched as the lights flashed all around her, brightening then dimming the faces of her dearest friends, flashing back all the memories between them.

“We’ve been climbing around the boat all afternoon,” Xi Men whispered to Xiao You, clasping her hand, “I think we did a pretty good job. Are you touched?”

Xiao You withdrew her hand from Xi Men and a smile played on her lips. “This is Ah Si’s gift for Shan Cai,” she replied, “If you want to be my boyfriend, you need to earn it yourself. You can learn from Ah Si.”

Shan Cai flung her arms around Dao Ming Si, blowing him a long, sweet kiss. Ever since they had met, he always found the most beautiful ways to reach inside her heart. Every time, she felt so touched. So loved. Dao Ming Si took out a glittering diamond bracelet which was specially designed with a meteor shower pattern. Taking her hand, he tied the bracelet around her wrist, whispering softly, “Shan Cai, I love you. I honestly love you. From now on, you can never leave me because I’m tying you to me. This bracelet will remind you that no matter what happens, you belong to me. Always.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Mei Zuo closed the door behind him and used his hand to wipe a teardrop from his face. “Ah Si, it’s one thing to make Shan Cai cry. But you didn’t need to make ME cry!”

They all settled back on the sofas inside the boat and their eyes were fixed on the golden couple: Dao Ming Si and Shan Cai.

“And me!” Xi Men added, wiping his eyes with Xiao You’s sleeve, “We’re seriously getting you guys back on this!”

Hua Ze Lei shook his head and smiled suspiciously. “What mischief are you two up to now?”

Mei Zuo thought for a moment before his infamous cheeky grin appeared again. He whispered something into Xi Men’s ear.

“Excellent!” Xi Men exclaimed excitedly, “Shan Cai, Mei Zuo and I are making you play a game of ‘Truth AND Dare’!”

“Both?!” yelled Shan Cai, “Dao Ming Si!”

“I swear I didn’t plan this part!” Dao Ming Si said quickly, holding his hands up in defence.

“Let’s start with truth,” Xi Men continued, “Umm, Mei Zuo?”

Taking the cue, Mei Zuo popped the million-dollar question. “Shan Cai, what do you honestly think of Ah Si’s butt?”

Shan Cai blushed furiously. “What kind of question is that?!”

“A truthful answer please,” Mei Zuo prompted.

Shan Cai opened her mouth, but for a long time, nothing came out. Dao Ming Si shifted behind her and buried his tomato face into her back.

“Truth, please,” Mei Zuo repeated.

Shan Cai took a deep breath and murmured, “It...It has a...very nice...shape...and it’s just...irresistibly...cute.”

Mei Zuo did his famous roll off the sofa and was sprawling on the ground, laughing so hard that he forgot to breathe.

Dao Ming Si lifted an eyebrow and asked curiously, “Shan Cai, when have you seen my butt?”

That sent Xi Men and Xiao You flying off the sofa too, dragging Hua Ze Lei down with them.

“Thankyou for that LOVELY information!” cried Mei Zuo.

“Anyway,” said Shan Cai, recovering from her overly red face, “So, what’s the dare?”

Xi Men shook his head and grinned. “I think the truth was enough for us. You and Ah Si can do the dare privately in your room tonight!”

Mei Zuo popped the bottle of Tequila and began pouring it into the wine glasses. Everyone picked up their glasses and held them out at Shan Cai. Mei Zuo smiled affectionately and led the toast. “Wishing a happy birthday to our cute little hardworking virgin and merry Christmas to us all, CHEERS!”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“Shan Cai, you are so beeeeaaaauuuutiful!” Dao Ming Si sang in an awfully strained high-pitched voice.

“Umm, thanks.”

“Shan Cai, you have long, long, loooooooong hair!”

“Umm, yes I do.”

“Shan Cai, you have such juicy, taaaaaaaasty lips. I want to –”

“Oh be quiet, Dao Ming Si!” Shan Cai scolded him, blushing as other people walked past them giving curious looks.

It was two o’clock in the morning. The boat had taken everyone back to the hotel and F3, Jing and Xiao You had returned to their rooms already. Poor Shan Cai was still struggling to get through the lobby, with an extremely drunk Dao Ming Si draped over her shoulders, barely able to walk.

“Shan Cai, I loooooooove you!” Dao Ming Si continued singing in a ridiculous voice as Shan Cai hauled him into the lift. “I really, really, really loooooooove you!”

An elderly couple in the lift exchanged knowing looks and grinned at them. “On your honeymoon, sweetie?” asked the old man.

“Umm, yeah,” Shan Cai replied without thinking. She watched the couple exit the lift and gasped as she realised what she said.

“Dao Ming Si, did you hear that?” she asked nervously, trying to keep him upright at the same time.

“Shan Cai, you are so sweeeeeeeet, just like honey mooooooooncake!”

“Pighead! There’s no such thing as honey mooncake!”

When they finally reached the top level, Shan Cai hauled the pighead out of the lift, dragged him down the hallway and they tumbled into their room. Amazingly, they both still managed to be in one piece. Shan Cai picked herself up and looked down at her gorgeous boyfriend, sprawled on the floor like a sleeping puppy.

“WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?!” she yelled breathlessly, “Xi Men drank, Mei Zuo drank, Lei drank, Jing drank and even Xiao You drank! But only YOU have to end up singing like a lunatic and make me drag you from the jetty all the way up to your room!”

“Our room,” Dao Ming Si murmured, puckering his lips.

“No! I’m NOT kissing you!” She grabbed his arms and yanked him up to his feet. Together, they stumbled across a few metres of carpet before Dao Ming Si fell onto the bed, dragging Shan Cai down with him.

“Shan Cai,” he murmured. He rolled on top of her and rested his head under her chin.

“That’s the billionth time you’ve called my name,” she replied sleepily, “What?”

“You still owe me three words.”

Ignoring what he said, Shan Cai pushed him onto his back and disappeared into the bathroom. Moments later, she returned with a warm, damp towel and began wiping his drunken face. She pulled his jumper over his head and tossed it into the washing basket. Taking a few nervous breaths, she began unbuttoning his shirt.

“Shan Cai,” he murmured again, looking at her with a cheeky smile, “Do you want to –”

“SHUT UP!” she snapped, “I’m just putting your pyjamas on for you!”

“Shan Cai.”

“Stop being such a pighead!”

“Stop being such a stupid woman!”

Shan Cai giggled. He can be so adorable, she thought. She grabbed his pyjama shirt from the wardrobe and slipped it on him. The she pulled him up and wrapped him in his nightrobe, while he took the chance to snuggle his head on her shoulder. “I want a cuddle,” he mumbled.

Shan Cai gasped. “Are you just really drunk or are you really such a baby?”

“Your baby,” Dao Ming Si replied, smiling to himself.

Shan Cai flicked on the heater and tucked him under the blanket. “Good night, my baby,” she whispered, brushing a few strands of hair off his forehead. She saw that he was beginning to doze off so she bent over him and gave a quick kiss to his smooth, full lips. She smiled lovingly at his cute sleeping face and realised that she could not resist any more. She bent down to give him another kiss and whispered, “I love you.”

Shan Cai took a quick shower and changed into her little pink nightie again. She walked over to the side of the bed and switched off the lamp. She turned around and was about to crawl onto the sofa when she suddenly changed her mind. Dao Ming Si had truly touched the depths of her heart with all the beautiful things he had done for her. She needed to love him more. Shan Cai took a deep breath and climbed onto the bed. Dao Ming Si, conscious or not, turned away onto his side to give her more space. She slid one arm under his neck and wrapped her other arm around his waist. Snuggling closer against his warm, comfortable back, she immediately fell into her dreams, holding her beloved boyfriend in her arms for the rest of the night.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Dao Ming Si, who slept curled up on his side all night, opened one eye and glanced at the clock. Ten o’clock. Slowly, he opened the other eye as well and gasped as he suddenly realised that he was on the bed, not the sofa. As if that was only the beginning, he did a double take when he saw an arm resting under his neck. Wiping the sleep out of his eyes, he began scrutinising that strange little arm. Slender. White. Hairless. He was very sure that it was not his own arm. Dao Ming Si lifted the blanket off his body and found another little arm draped over his waist, the tiny fingers clasped onto the belt of his nightrobe. The second arm possessed a beautiful meteor bracelet, tied around its small, delicate wrist. Dao Ming Si smiled. A very big, happy smile. He felt a slight movement against his back, followed by a soft, muffled yawn.

“Good morning, Shan Cai,” he whispered, unable to stop smiling to himself.

“Already?” Shan Cai murmured, obviously half asleep.

“Why am I on the bed?” he asked slowly, still trying to register the lovely surprise to his sleepy brain.

“Well, do you rather be on the floor?” she teased, nuzzling her face into his back to wake herself up.

“I’m just surprised about my...location,” he replied. He rolled around to face her, giving Shan Cai her arms back. “And how warm and comfortable it was when I woke up,” he added sweetly.

“Last night, you were SO drunk you couldn’t even walk,” Shan Cai recalled, “I had to drag you all the way up from the jetty! And you were singing like a lunatic! You sang stuff like: Shan Cai, you have long, long, long hair and Shan Cai, you have...never mind.”

Dao Ming Si laughed and pinched her on the nose. “And then what happened? Tell me everything!”

“Umm, not much. You fell asleep pretty soon and I took a shower.”

“And then?” he pried, trying to make her admit her little acts of courage.

“And then...umm...I fell asleep too,” Shan Cai replied shyly.

“Did you do anything else before that?”

“No.”

“Did you kiss me?”

“Umm, yes, when I said goodnight.” Shan Cai blushed and looked away.

Dao Ming Si turned her face back to him. “How many times?”

“Umm, umm, just...twice.”

He grinning wildly and gestured to his nightrobe. “But you still haven’t told me that you took my clothes off.”

“No! Just your shirt!” Shan Cai said a little too quickly, her face growing redder and redder.

“Does that mean I’m allowed to take your shirt off too?” he asked in a naughty voice.

She threw a pillow at his face, screaming, “Dao Ming Si! You are NOT sleeping on the bed tonight!”

“Sure! Let’s sleep on the floor then!”

01-Jan-2005 HAPPY 28th BIRTHDAY JERRY!
