Chapter 17

Good Thing You Were Here

Bosco handed Leila a movie box. Leila looked at it, “Are you sure this is going to work?”

“I know Myo, she’ll be sitting on top of Raymond if she watches this movie. All we have to do is make sure Raymond goes over.”

“Don’t worry I’ve got that covered. I already have a plan…”

Myolie pulled the popcorn bag out form the microwave. As she pulled open the bag releasing the steam, she could smell the buttery taste of the popcorn. She poured the entire contents into a bowl and carried over to the living room. Before taking a seat she switched off the lights. Now she was ready to begin her movie. She popped herself down on the couch with the popcorn in her lap. She placed her finger on the PLAY button of the remote, but before she could press play, the doorbell rang. “Who could that be?” Myolie wondered.

She set the bowl of popcorn on the coffee table and hurried to open the door, “Raymond, what are you doing here?” Myolie asked surprisingly.

“I got a call from Leila. She said that something was wrong with your faucet, like it busted or something, and so she told me to come take a look at it.”

“Something’s wrong with our faucet? How come I didn’t know that? Why don’t you come in first.”

“Were you planning to sleep? Why are all the lights out?”

“Oh, I was about to watch a movie.” Myolie answered as she turned the lights back on, “Why don’t I check the faucets with you, did Leila say which one?”

Raymond shook his head, “She didn’t say and I didn’t bother to ask. I assumed she’d be here to tell me. It ‘s weird she didn’t even tell you first.”

Myolie shrugged her shoulders. They checked the bathroom faucets first, then they looked at the one in the kitchen.

“Nothing seems to be wrong with any of them, well in that case I better be going. Sorry to disturb you.”

“No, I should be the one saying sorry. I’m really sorry you had to come over here for nothing. If you don’t have any other planes you’re welcome to stay her and watch the movie with me.”

“Sure, I have no where else to be right now. If I go home I’ll just be facing four walls.”

“I popped some popcorn, or do you want some cake? I backed a chocolate cake this afternoon.”

“Uh, popcorn sounds good.”

“So you want something to drink too?” Myolie opened the refrigerator, “Is coke okay?” Raymond nodded and Myolie passed him a can.

They sat down on the two separate sides of the couch. Myolie placed the popcorn bowl in the middle of the couch.

“So what movie is this?” Raymond asked as he put a few pieces of popcorn in his mouth

“I don’t know, Leila rented it and watched it yesterday, she said it was really good and told me I had to watch it. I don’t even know where the case went, she left it in the DVD player.”

At the beginning of the movie Myolie was fine, but as the movie progressed she began to tense up. She brought her knees close to her body, and each time she got scared she’d quickly bury her face down and scoot over closer to Raymond. Soon enough she was sitting so close to Raymond that if she were to move over any more she’d be in his lap.

“AAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!” Myolie hid her face in Raymond’s chest and tugged onto his shirt.

Raymond pulled his arm out and put it around Myolie’s shoulder. He assured her, “It’s alright Myo, it’s only a movie, it’s not real.”

Myolie nodded and turned to face the screen, only to hide her face again. Raymond firmed his grip around Myolie’s shoulder. It made her feel so secure. She got up her courage to look at the TV, with Raymond’s strong arm around her, she felt safe to watch the movie. For the next 10 minutes she didn’t hid her face again.

“AAHHHHHHHHH” Myolie screamed. This time it wasn’t because of the movie, but because her entire apartment went pitch black.

“It’s alright Myolie, I’m right here.”

“What just happened?”

“I think the fuse may have jumped causing the power to go out.”

Raymond was about to stand up, when Myolie pulled him back down, “Where are you going?”

Raymond put his hand on Myolie hand and calmed her down, “It’s okay Myolie, I was just getting up to go check it out.”

“Don’t leave me alone here.”

“Alright, Alright, I won’t leave you here.” He held Myolie’s hand this time as he got up, “Do you have a flashlight?”

“There’s one in the kitchen.”

Raymond shone the light at the fuse box and flipped the switch. The power came back on and Myolie smiled, “Yay!”

She looked and noticed she was holding Raymond’s hand. She let go embarrassingly, “Sorry about that.”

When she looked back again she noticed how wrinkled Raymond’s shirt was from where she had been tugging at earlier during the movie.

“So do you want to finish the movie?” Raymond asked

Myolie shook her head, “It’s okay, unless you want to watch it, then we could but I don’t want to wrinkle your shirt anymore.”

Raymond let out a chuckle when he looked at his shirt, “It’s okay, so I’m guessing you don’t like scary movies.”

Myolie shook her head again, “They’re not really my thing. If I had know that Leila had rented a scary movie I wouldn’t have watched it.”

Raymond nodded, “Yeah, Leila loves to watch anything scary. Why didn’t you say something earlier, we could have stopped it if you didn’t want to watch it.”

“I thought you were watching it…”

“That’s just like you to be so considerate of others. Next time just something sooner.”

“I know la, so do you want some cake?”

“Sure, I’d love some of your cake, but if you’ll excuse me I’m going to go to the bathroom first.”

Raymond left and Myolie began to slice the cake. After placing the first piece on a plate she heard Raymond scream from the bathroom, “Myolie, I need some help in here!”

Myolie rushed to the bathroom and when she opened the door she felt the water hit her shirt. Water was spraying in all directions from the faucet.

“Could you go turn off the main control?” Raymond asked as he tried to keep his hands over the faucet to stop as much of the water as possible.

Myolie quickly turned the handle off, “Looks like Leila was right, it is broken.”

“Hey, do you have a wrench and screwdriver? I’ll fix it for you.”

“Yeah, let me go get them.”

After only a couple of minutes, Raymond fixed the problem, “Okay, it should be fine now.” He said as he turned on the faucet and seeing the water flow out properly.

“Thanks, I don’t know what I would have done without you here tonight.” Then she looked at Raymond’s soaking shirt, “you’re all wet, you better change out of that before you catch a cold. Err…why don’t you take off your shirt and I’ll put it in the dryer for you. It shouldn’t take long.”

“Ummm….” Raymond felt unsure.

“Don’t think about it la, if you wait any longer you’ll start sneezing la.”

Raymond unbuttoned his shirt and handed it to Myolie.

“Take off your undershirt too.”

He pulled it off as well and passed it over to Myolie who gave him a towel in return.

Myolie turned on the dryer as Raymond stepped out of the bathroom and took a seat on the couch drying himself. Myolie went to her room and dug in her drawers for something Raymond could possibly wear. She held the largest t-shirt she could find in her hand on went out to the living room.

“I tried to find a shirt you could wear while you waited for your clothes to dry and,” She pulled out the shirt from behind her back. “This is the only one I think will fit you.” She handed it to Raymond.

He looked at the light pink shirt Myolie had just handed him and held it to his body, “So is pink my color?” he asked with a straight face.

Myolie couldn’t help but laugh. She shook her head, “Noooooooo”

Raymond also couldn’t hold back his laughter.

“Dinner was really good” Leila commented as she and Bosco stepped out of the elevator.

Bosco nodded, “I wonder how Raymond and Myolie are doing.”

“We’ll see soon” Leila said as she opened the door.

“Hey, Myo. Hey Ray.” Leila and Bosco both greeted.

“Why aren’t you wearing a shirt, Raymond?” Bosco asked nervously.

“Is that Myolie’s shirt your holding Ray? What happened? ” Leila added.

“You should know Leila?” Raymond answered.

“Huh..what…”

“You two didn’t…did you…nothing happen, right?” Bosco asked as she moved his index finger back and fourth between Myolie and Raymond.

“Leila should be the clearest about what happened…she called Raymond over…”

“I…but…what…I didn’t do anything.”

“What do you mean you didn’t do anything?” Raymond asked, “You called me to come over and look at the faucet.”

“The faucet?” Leila asked, then remembering about her lie earlier to get Raymond to come over.

“Yeah, the faucet. It was…going everywhere, water splashed all over the bathroom. Raymond got all soaked” Myolie told her, “I’m glad you noticed the faucet was broken Leila.”

“Really?” Leila asked in a surprised tone. “It was?”

“Leila, why do you sound so surprised? I thought you knew about it already.” Raymond pointed out.

“Oh, yeah., of course I did…”

“The funny thing is when Raymond came over to check it at first it wasn’t broken, but later it was. It’s like you knew that something would happen and you went ahead and called Raymond to come over and be here when it happened. It was as if you were psychic of something Leila…”Myolie joked.

“Oh yeah, totally my sixth sense…” Leila laughed nervously.

“Good thing Raymond was here. I don’t know what I would have done tonight without him.” She proceeded to tell Leila and Bosco about what had happen.

“Sounds like you guys had a bad night.” Bosco said.

“It wasn’t too bad…and I been meaning to ask…did you guys go somewhere together before this? How come you came back together?”

“I…we…umm…I ran into Bosco downstairs and he said he had bought dessert so I told him to come in.” Leila made up a story.

“Oooh, dessert sounds great, what did you get, Bosco?”

“Red-bean soup” Bosco replied as he pulled the four Styrofoam bowls out from the plastic bag. ”Let’s eat up.”

“Wait, one minute” Myolie stopped him…”How did you know to get four bowls? You couldn’t have known Raymond was coming over.

“I…” Bosco tried to think quick, “I didn’t, the people must have given me an extra by mistake, or I think it might be like buy 3 get one free…”

Myolie nodded, and both Bosco and Leila let out a sigh of relief, “Whoa, that was close, good thing she bought it.” They thought.
