Chapter 34

Only a Replacement

It had been a few weeks now since Leila has moved in with Bosco. They have gotten use to the adjustments and have adapted this as part of their lives.

Bosco turned around and found Leila lying there sound asleep next to him. He smiled. He was glad to have her in his life and to be able to see her beautiful face every morning was like a blessing.

He gently kissed her forehead and quietly slipped out of bed being very cautious as to not wake Leila up.

He went into his kitchen and cooked breakfast. After setting two plates on the table he went back in to the bedroom to wake Leila up.

“Five more minutes, please.” Leila pleaded.

“No can do la, come on honey you have to get up now. I’ve already given you fifteen extra minutes. We’ll be late if you don’t hurry.”

“I don’t want too. I’m too tired to move.”

A mischievous smiled appeared on Bosco’s face. He placed his arms under Leila’s body and picked her up.

“Wai, what are you doing.” Leila asked still keeping her eyes closed.

“You said you were too tired to move so I figured I’d help you.”

Leila opened her eyes and smiled, “Okay, I’m up. I’m up.”

Bosco carried Leila out of the room and set her down on one of the chairs in the dining room, “Eat up la. I’m going to go change first.”

Leila nodded and she watched as Bosco entered his room. A sweet smile appeared on her lips. She had never been happier in her life.

This morning shouldn’t have been any different from the other mornings, yet it was. Bosco couldn’t help but feel sad on this day. Looking over at Leila, he would usually have a big smile on his face, but this morning his face carried a frown. He entered the kitchen, but did not cook breakfast. He grabbed a few mangos and some other ingredients, slowly he made mango pudding.

Leila yawned and stretched as she entered the kitchen, “Why didn’t you wake me this morning.”

Bosco gave her a small smile, “I figured I’d let you sleep in some today since you don’t have to go into work until later.”

Leila returned the smile, “Hey, what are you making?” she asked as she looked over Bosco’s shoulder.

“Just some mango pudding.” He answered.

“Mango pudding!” Leila exclaimed, “It’s my favorite, how did you know?”

“I didn’t, I’m actually making it for one of my friend. He’s sick so I thought I’d make some before I go visit him.”

“Oh.” Leila said sadly.

“I’ll leave you a small bowl in the fridge, how does that sound.”

Leila smiled and nodded, “Thanks.”

Bosco finished and poured the contents into a container, “Hey Leila, I’m heading out now, I can’t have dinner with you tonight.” Bosco shouted before leaving and closing the door.

“I would be great to have a slice of cheesecake right now, but I have to work late tonight.” Myolie pouted as she told Raymond.

He nodded, “I’ll go buy one and come pick you up when you get off your shift.”

Myolie smile, “Yay, thanks. You’re the best.” she answered.

They continued to eat their lunch. Leila came and joined them.

“Hey Leila, what’s up?” Raymond asked.

“Where’s Bosco?” Myolie asked.

Leila sighed, “He’s visiting a sick friend. He said he can’t have dinner with me tonight.”

“Do you know which friend he’s visiting?” Myolie asked. “I wonder if it’s someone I know.”

“I don’t know. He didn’t say a name. He just made some mango pudding and headed out.”

“He made mango pudding?” Myolie asked in a shaky voice. Her expression suddenly changed.

Leila nodded, and then looked at her watch, “I have to go la, I’ll see you guys later.”

“Myolie…Myolie…” Raymond called.

“Huh?” she snapped out of her thoughts.

“What’s wrong?” Raymond asked.

“I’m worried about Bosco. Today is Nancy’s death anniversary. It’s been four years now. Every year on this day he’ll make mango pudding…”

“Don’t worry too much, I’m sure he’ll be okay.”

“I hope so.”

Bosco set the bouquet of lilies down next to the grave. He slowly squatted down and looked at the small black and white picture of Nancy. How beautiful she looked.

He put a smile on his face, “Guess what I made for you?” He pulled the container out from the bag, “It’s your favorite, mango pudding.”

Slowly he began to break into sobs, “Nancy, I miss you…”

“Hello” the person answered in a low muffled voice.

“Hello, Bosco is that you?” Myolie asked. She heard some kind of mumble, “Bosco?” Then there was a loud crash. Bosco had thrown his phone down on the ground.

“Bosco!” Myolie screamed over the phone.

“Hello?” a female voice answered on the other line.

“Who’s this?” Myolie asked.

“I’m Miki, from Moonlight Bar. Are you Myolie?”

“Miki…” Myolie thought for a while, “Oh yeah, I remember you. Is Bosco down at the bar?”

“Yeah, he’s pretty drunk. He looks really unhappy too. Maybe you should come down here…”

“I’m on my way, and Miki, could you look after him for now?”

“Sure thing.”

“Thanks.”

Myolie entered the bar and looked around for Bosco. Scanning the place, she finally spotted Bosco at a table full of empty beer bottles, “Bosco.”

“I’m sorry Myolie, I tried to stop him drinking…” Miki apologized.

“It’s okay, it’s not your fault.” Myolie took the seat next to Bosco, “Bosco, don’t be like this. You know Nancy’s gone.”

“No she’s not. SHE’S NOT!” he yelled through his tears.

Myolie began to cry too, “Bosco, it’s been four years now, you have to let go and move on. You have Leila now. You love her.”

“Do I?” he questioned. “Myo, I don’t know what I think. She reminds me so much of Stephy…the way she skips rock, they both like dolphins…and like Nancy, she likes mango pudding too…even her personality is so much like them…I’m scared…Myo, what if I love her only because of her resemblance to Stephy and Nancy? What if I don’t love her at all?”

“Bosco, don’t be crazy! You love Leila. You know you do.”

“NO! I…I DON’T!”

Though they didn’t see it, right at that moment someone ran out of the bar.

“I DON’T….I don’t know…” Bosco said.

Leila ran all the way to the park. Not being able to run any farther she sat down on the bench. Placing her face in her hands, she began crying.

Samuel finally caught up with her. He quietly sat down next to her. He only looked at her not saying a single word.

Leila suddenly threw her arms around Samuel’s neck, “Samuel, he…he…doesn’t love me.”

Samuel patted her back, “Shhhh, don’t cry.”

Leila let go of him, “I was silly enough to believe he actually loves me. I knew it was all too good to be true. He...he was only using me as a replacement.”

“Leila that’s not necessary true.” Samuel said.

“Samuel, I heard it with my own ears.”

“But you saw how drunk he was. You know you can never take a drunken person’s word.”

Leila shook her head, “I…don’t know what to think anymore.”

“Bosco, come on, you have to go home.” Myolie urged as she shook his arm.

Bosco pushed her hand away, “Leave me alone.”

Miki came over, “Myolie, maybe you should go ahead and go home first.” She suggested.

“But what about Bosco?”

“Don’t worry, I’ll take care of him.” Miki assured Myolie.

“But he’s…”

“Myolie, I was the one who helped him stand back up four years ago. Have confidence in me to do it again now.”

Myolie nodded, “Okay, thanks. If anything happens, call me, okay.”

“I will, and really, don’t worry too much, Bosco just needs some time. He just needs to realize his true feelings.”

Myolie began to leave, but she turned around and had one last look at Bosco, it made her heartache to see her best friend like this.

Myolie and Raymond were sitting on the couch in Myolie’s apartment. She had told him what happened. Raymond had his arm around Myolie’s shoulder and was comforting her, “It’ll be okay.”

“Do you really think so?”

Raymond nodded, “I’m sure everything will turn out fine.”

Right then someone open the door, “Leila, why are you here?” Myolie asked.

“Is it okay, if I slept here tonight Myolie?” Leila asked.

“Sure, but is something wrong?” Myolie asked worriedly.

“Yeah Leila, why are your eyes all red have you been crying?” Raymond asked in a concern voice.

“I’m really tired. I don’t want to talk right now…” She continued to walk towards her room. But before she went in she turned back around and walked into the living room, “I’ve decided that I’m going back to Australia for a while…” she announced.
