Chapter 5

New Roommate

Myolie and Bosco were sitting at one of the square table down in the canteen.

“Hai,” Myolie sighed.

“What’s wrong?” Bosco asked

“Now that Annie’s gotten married and moved out I need to find someone to share the rent....well it’s not that I can’t pay it myself, but it’ll be too quiet living alone.”

“I could move in with you,” Bosco joked.

“Yeah right!”

“Well what are you planning to do if you don’t find a new roommate.”

“If I don’t find someone soon I’m going to have to look for someone who’s willing to
take me in.”

“You could always move in with me.”

Myolie slapped Bosco’s arm playfully, “You wish, I’m going to place a flyer on the bulletin board to see if anyone’s interested.”

Right then Leila took a seat next to Myolie across from Bosco.

Bosco pointed at her, “YOU!”

“You know her?” Myolie asked

Bosco raised one of his hand and partially cupped it around his mouth, so Myolie could
see what he was saying while blocking Leila’s view. He mouthed, “Not someone you want to know.” He then stood up, “I have to go, I’ll see you later Myo.”

“Hi! I’m Leila Tong, the new anesthesiologist.” Leila introduced herself with a handshake.

Myolie shook her hand, “Nice to meet you Leila, I’m Myolie Wu. I’m an ophthalmologist here.”

“I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop on your conversation with your friend, but I overheard that you had a room for rent.”
“Yeah, are you interested?”

“Definitely, I could move in any time if that’s okay with you.”

“Umm, don’t you want to see the place first before you decide?”

“Oh yeah, I guess that would be helpful huh? It’s just I need to find a place soon, that’s
why I’m so eager. I promise I’m not some sort of psychopath.”

“I believe you, well are you busy tonight, I could show my apartment to you.”

“I have something to do, how about tomorrow?”

“I work second shift tomorrow, maybe Wednesday?”

“Wednesday sounds good to me.”

“5:30 in the lobby?” Myolie suggested

“Works for me.”

Myolie looks at her watch, “Wah, I better get going, it was nice meeting you Leila, I’ll see you Wednesday. Bye”

“Bye.” Leila smiled.

Myolie and Leila got you of the elevator, “I live in 6A,” Myolie told Leila as she pointed to a white door in front of them to the right. She turned the key and pushed the door open. She quickly flipped on the light switch to revel her living room, “Come in” Myolie invited.

Leila walked to the center of the living room. She turned her head in all directions and kept nodding her head, “I like it here, everything is so nice and cozy.”

“I’m glad you like it, why don’t I show you to your potential room.”

Myolie and Leila walked through the hallway. Myolie opened the first door on the right.

“I hope it’s not too small.”

“Wah, this is not small at all, compared to where I’m living right now this is really big!” Leila exclaimed.

“I’m glad, Annie always complained about not having enough space. Well there’s furniture and everything so all you have to do if bring your stuff and you. That is if you decided to rent.”

“Of course I want to rent. I couldn’t find a better place or a better landlady.”

“Why don’t I show you the rest of the apartment. This is my room.” Myolie said as the
pointed to the second door on the right. “This is the guest bedroom,” Myolie said as she open the door at the end of the hallway, “There’s a sofa bed, I have a computer in there as well, you can use it if you need. I doubles up as a storage room too.”

Then Myolie pointed to the only door on the left, “That’s the bathroom and laundry room. Then the kitchen and dining room are over there,” Myolie indicated as she pointed to a round glass table.

“So can I move in anytime? Leila asked.

“Yeah, whenever you want.”

“Would this Saturday be too soon?”

“No that’ll be fine, I have this Saturday off anyways. Do you need any help moving any of your stuff here?

“Nah, I’ll get one of my friends to help me if I really need it. Oh...by the way, are there any rules I should know?”

“Rules? What do you mean?” Myolie asked rather confused.

“Well my current landlady has these rules, like I have to be back by 9 PM, or else she’ll lock the door and I won’t be able to get in. It makes my job really difficult, I have to go through the trouble of switching around the roster. And another rule she has is I have to call by 3 PM if I’m not coming home for dinner to let her know. If I forget then I’ll get a lecture from her...she thinks I’m her daughter or something.”

Myolie was shaking her head in disbelief, “This woman sounds nuts. I don’t have any rules, I mean come on, we’re doctors, our schedule can get changed at the last minute, it’s hard to determine what time we get off work.”

“Wah, you’re great. I’m glad my landlady isn’t letting me renew my rent contract. This will be so much fun now that I’ll be staying with someone my age. I’ll have someone to talk to!”

“Leila will be a good friend,” Myolie smile and thought to herself then she snapped out of her thoughts, “Oh, you’ve been here so long and I haven’t even gotten you anything to drink yet. What would you like?”

“Anything’s fine.”

Myolie came out from the kitchen with two cans of cokes. She handed one to Leila who was now looking at all her picture frames she had on her bookshelf in the living room.

The first picture she came across was of Myolie with an older man and woman.

“Let me guess, these are your parents?”

“Yeah, they’re in the US right now, but don’t worry you’ll meet them soon enough, they like to make visits periodically, like once a month. They’re a bit wacky.”

“I’m sure they’re a lot of fun.” Leila said as she moved on to the next few pictures of Myolie and a girl probably not much older than her, “Who’s this?” Leila asked.

“She’s Annie. one of my best friend, the one that used to live here with me. She just got married last month. I’m really happy for her” She picked up the picture she took with Annie in her wedding dress, “I miss having here around. She’s the voice around here, but
now she’s all the way in Australia.”

“She moved to Australia? I’m from there!”

“Really?” That’s so interesting.”

Then Leila noticed a set of photo frames, it was like a Ferris wheel. It actually moved around in a circle. All the pictures were of Myolie and Bosco. One was of them in there graduation gowns. The next was of Myolie on Bosco’s back. Then there was one where they were making silly faces. The next one Leila thought was put in backwards, but realized that they were doing a handstand. The last picture Bosco has his arm wrapped around Myolie’s shoulder.

“You two look really close.” Leila commented.

“Yeah, Bosco is a really great guy.”

“Is he your boyfriend?”

“No way! We could never go out. He’ll always be a big brother to me, nothing else.”

Leila nodded as she understood what Myolie meant.

“Have a seat” Myolie said as she motioned towards the blue sofa with yellow cushions.

“Wah! So comfy!” Leila exclaimed.
Myolie and Leila sat there and talked and laughed for the next hour or so.

Leila looked at her watch, “It’s getting late, I have to go. Thanks again Myolie. I’m really excited about moving in.”

“I’m excited that your excited. I guess I’ll see you Saturday.” Myolie said as she walked Leila to the door.

“I’ll see you then.” Leila said as she waved good-bye to Myolie

Bosco was holding a cup of coffee in one hand while looking at the file he was holding in his other hand. He turned the corner and bumped into someone causing his entire cup of coffee to spill on her, “I’m so sorry, I wasn’t watching where I was going.”

“You!” The woman exclaimed, “Of course, you never watch were you’re going. This isn’t the first time anyways. I don‘t understand why it is that every time I see you I have bad
luck.”

“What is that suppose to mean? I said sorry both times. Maybe if you were watching were you were going then you’d be able to get out of the way.” Bosco retorted.”

“Never mind, just from now on stay as far away from me as possible. I don’t want to have to see you when I don’t have to.”

“I don’t want to see you that much either.”

They walked their separate ways...never would they guess they’d be seeing each other much more...
