Chapter 9

Regret?

Ron got out of the office building and headed towards his car. On his way he saw Bobby standing there waiting for him at his car.

Bobby: So did you do what I told you to do before you went to bed last night?

Ron: Yes uncle.

Bobby: Good. My brother would be very happy to know that his son is once again in the game.

Ron: How can you call it a game?

Bobby: Cause, there’s always someone who wins and someone who loses and on special occasions it’s a tie.

Ron: Sometimes both people lose.

Bobby: That’s true but that’s because they both forfeited. It’s not because they were both meant to lose.

Ron: So are you a loser or a winner in this game of love?

Bobby: I don’t play the game so how can I be either one?

Ron: Well then wouldn’t my father be disappointed seeing his little brother still all by himself.

Bobby: I’m not lonely…I still have a great nephew and of course a future niece in law.

Ron laughed at his uncle’s way of perception.

Bobby: Well, are we going to get on the car and go visit your dad or are we going to stand here and talk forever.

Ron: You know I don’t like the talking business…so let’s go.

The two of them got on the BMW Z4 and Ron drove off to the cemetery where he would come to visit his father twice a year; on his birthday and on the day he sadly past away. They brought a bouquet of flowers with them and would place it on his tombstone as the two of them would say a few words and of course shed a few tears.

When they got there they brought out the bouquet and walked towards his father’s resting place.

Ron: It’s been a while now right dad? Look who I brought with me today, I hope you’re happy seeing your brother come visit you.

Bobby: Like I promised you I would take good care of your son. And you know what he finally asked someone out and it’s not Linda. But don’t be disappointed this young lady that your son asked out is also very nice, I personally think she’s much better than Linda.

Ron: You don’t have to tell my dad everything.

Bobby: of course I do. You want to know about your son’s personal life too don’t you big bro?

Ron: Well it’s my turn now.

Bobby: Sure.

Ron: Hey dad. The company is doing well and our newest project Celestial Embassy Hotel is coming along fine. And that young lady that uncle was talking about is our new collaborator; her brother and her were my friends from high school. Remember how I use to tell you about her, the girl who would drag me to walk with her. After 8 years I saw her again and I guess you could say we rekindled our friendship. Dad, I missed you. I missed you lecturing me about things that I never knew about. I missed the way you would personally come into my room and wake me up. It’s been two years dad, two whole painful years. Did you know how many suicides I tried to commit? Or how many times I gave up on this world? But every single time when I think about committing suicide I think of you, I think of how disappointed you would be and so I stop myself before its too late. Dad, do you remember before you died you told me that before my last breath I should find true love, something that you didn’t find before you past away. Well I’m trying to find it and hopefully before my last breath I would find it.

At this point a tear rolled down his cheek as he went on his knees to clean the area around his dad’s tombstone. He used his tears to clean his dad’s picture and his hands to dust off the dirt that was on the other parts of the tombstone.

Bobby: hey, are you ok?

Ron: I’ll be fine uncle.

As the two of them left the cemetery there standing a few meters away from them was Ron’s mother.

Ron: What are you doing here?

Ron’s Mom: I came to visit your dad.

Ron: He doesn’t want see you.

Ron’s Mom: I’m sorry that I left but Ron; I couldn’t stand seeing him in pain. It was just too hard, and plus he (pointing to her new husband) was always there for me. I’m just a woman Ron.

Ron: You’re just a woman that left her husband when he was in pain, left your son when he needed your support and ran off with another man. That’s the type of woman you are…a woman with no love for your family. And to tell you the truth, dad never loved you either. He said that that arrange marriage was the worst thing that ever happened to him, but the only good thing that came out was ME! I brought you two together, and when he thought that he did begin to truly love you…you loved HIM (pointing to his stepfather). I don’t want to see your face! Go! Leave us alone! You didn’t want to see dad in pain so you left now I’m in pain shouldn’t you leave too. You heartless woman!

Ron’s Mom: Ron…why must you be like this to me. I spent 9 months bearing you within me. You were apart of me…why would I ever leave you when you’re in pain? A mother’s love for her child will never fade son. I’ll love you and continue to care for you no matter what. But if you want me to leave then I will, after I drop these flowers off for your dad. And I knew that he didn’t love me…I knew he didn’t care but because of you I stayed with him Ron. Because of you I didn’t leave, but when he was in pain and you weren’t there I couldn’t think of a single reason to stay. I knew that you would hate me…but I would hate myself even more if I didn’t leave him. I had enough Ron…you should understand…you were apart of me.

Ron: I don’t understand and I don’t have a mother like you! LEAVE!

He turned red with tears in his eyes; he couldn’t stand his mother’s presence.

Ron: Fine, if you don’t want to leave, I will.

Bobby was standing there speechless, he knew not to get tangled into their argument and knew that the only way to comfort his nephew was at home.

Ron and his uncle left leaving Ron’s mother there with her new husband standing in front of his father’s grave.

Ron and his uncle got on his car and Ron drove aimlessly not thinking about anything. He just drove like there was a no tomorrow he wanted to drive his anger away by driving further and further. He didn’t want to see his mother’s face and her words in his head, he didn’t want to see that man that took his mother away or the two of them together. He wanted to be alone but he remembered there was someone with him, someone who helped him through a lot. His uncle.

Ron: How come you didn’t say a word back there?

Bobby: Why should I?

Ron: I thought you would’ve said something when I was yelling at her.

Bobby: Do you think what you said was right?

Ron: Of course!

Bobby: Then why would I need to speak? To make her feel more miserable? I don’t think anything could’ve made her feel worse than the words coming out from her own son.

Ron may be bitter but he knew that he had caused his mother such indescribable pain and misery because of his words. He may not forgive her, but he knew he was wrong. His anger may usually take the best of him but when he’s there with his uncle he finally realizes his petty mistakes that can cause someone so much pain. That someone was his mother.

Ron: I don’t understand you one bit.

Bobby: What’s there to understand…I speak what I see while you speak what you feel. My words may make you think Ron and maybe even make you feel guilty because of your actions but it’s the right thing to say at the right time. I don’t want you to regret things later in your life like my brother. If he refused that marriage, he would’ve died with his true love by his side. But because he didn’t refuse that marriage he died with his son by his side. You win some you lose some. Right?

When they arrived home Ron decided to take off to that place where he would go when the things that happen are what he never wanted to happen. He wanted to be alone and so he went there. He drove off and when he got there he sat on one of the steps thinking about what he had done and what he should’ve done.

He thought of his harsh words that caused his mother’s eyes to water. He remembered what his father said before he died. He thought of his uncle’s words that made him realize his mistakes. Was he wrong yelling at his mother like he did? Would his father want to see him yelling at her? All of these questions went through his mind…as the last question entered his mind he once again saw that shadow.

She knew not to disturb him so she sat down beside him as she watched him place his face in his hands and she watched as the tears that were in his eyes slowly fell to the ground. She didn’t know why she was there in the first place, but she had a feeling that she should go there and so she did. Maybe it was a sixth sense telling her that he was going to be there…whatever the reason was, she was glad she was there. To be able to be by his side during his time of need, during his time of pain and she hoped that one day he would truly accept her into his life so that she could give him a hand when he’s down and help brighten up the darkest days of his life.
