“Akira?” She shouted out.
Nothing.
Maki got out of bed and frantically started searching throughout the whole cottage.
“Akira?! Akira?!” She shouted in a panic.
Then she remembered that Tomo was also staying in the cottage, only to find that he was gone too. She felt some relief hoping that at least Akira would be with him. She still wanted to know where they were though.
She quickly changed into a white summer dress and quickly put on a pair of white ballet shoes, heading outside. Maki decided that the first place to look was the others cottages. Her hopes were crushed when she found Jin and Kame both sleeping outside on the bench porch in front of their cottages.
For a moment, Maki scratched her head. “Didn’t Jin have the key?” Her answer was then answered as she saw and heard the keys fall down from his pockets. She simply shrugged and headed for the girls cottages only to find that they are all suffering hang over’s and that Mao didn’t even bother to come back. More panic started to fill inside of her but continued on her search. The beach was next.
She slowly walked to the beach and couldn’t help but admire her way there. The cottages were quite pretty and were built like traditional cottages, although the insides felt modern and comfortable. The plants were all neatly decorated and well taken care of most likely by that old couple watering the plants. They saw her looking their way and waved to her, Maki waved back with a smile.
“They’re a lovely couple,” someone jumped next to her. Startled she turned around fast, nearly whacking the person but luckily the person ducked out of the way. “Woah!”
“God Toma! You scared me!” Maki panted while Toma waved cheekily.
“So where are you going?” Toma walked beside her.
“To the beach to look for Akira,” she said quite embarrassed at the fact that she had lost her own son.
Toma slightly raised his eyebrows but then grabbed her hand leading her way. They were slightly running but not fast enough to run a race. Nevertheless, they were at the beach in no time where a huge crowd of people had gathered.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
“Shut up you stupid heart!” Toma yelled inside himself. He quickly stole a glance where his hands were holding onto Maki’s. This didn’t do him any good as more sounded came from his heart. A small smile escaped from his lips.
“Why are there so many people?” Maki asked Toma as he continued to lead her way throughout the crowd looking for the little boy.
“Because I’m here!” Toma laughed at his own joke.
Maki couldn’t help but chuckle. “Seriously.”
“What? You don’t believe that?” Toma stopped for a moment, looking hurt. Although it was all an act, he was pretty good at acting.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
Toma wanted to hit his chest.
“Okaachan!” Akira yelled out and ran towards his mother. She gripped her boy tight, receiving the hug she reached out for this morning. Small tears freely escaped from her eyes while the panic feeling abruptly vanished throughout her.
“Ohayou Pi-kun!” Toma greeted cheerfully. However, his greeting was not returned as cheerfully.
“Hi.”
“You know how worried I was?” Maki exclaimed to her son.
“That’s my fault. I was going to go out by myself but I saw Akira pacing around in the lounge room.” Tomo explained while Toma gave him a very weird look.
“What were you doing in Maki-channn’s cottage!!” He slightly shouted and stood in front of Maki, as if protecting her.
“I didn’t have the keys.” He briefly explained to Toma, rolling his eyes. Why does he have to explain himself in front of him anyway?
“You should have gone to me! See! I have these master keys! I can unlock everything here!” He showed off his massive collection of keys.
“Whatever.” Tomo didn’t bother to argue back, he knew this wouldn’t get anywhere.
“Pacing? What were you doing pacing around the room Akira?” Maki directly faced Akira.
Akira hesitated, embarrassed to speak of his nightmare. He had already talked about it with his Uncle Tomo and didn’t want to say anymore. When he didn’t say anything, both Toma and Maki looked up to Tomo hoping that he would explain.
“He had a-” Tomo was about to explain but was immediately interrupted by Akira.
“I was hungry and but I couldn’t find any food,” Akira lied.
Maki stared at her son momentarily but decided not to pursue the topic any longer and was just glad to find her son. However, she knew that he wasn’t telling the truth.
“Well, I guess we should get going. We still need to pack.” Tomo edged to go back.
Toma’s face slightly showed a frown. “You guys are leaving already?”
“Yeah.” Tomo shortly answered and started walking back. “Oh, Toma?”
Toma’s face lit up with brightness, Pi-kun needed him!
“Yes sir!” He saluted Tomo.
“I need you to open my cottage.”
“Yes sir!” Toma answered while jiggling his collection of keys and following Pi.
“Uhmm.” Maki spoke up a little and both ‘men’ turned around to face her.
“Jin’s already at the cottage. He’s sleeping on the porch with Kame.” She explained what left her puzzled this morning.
Both Toma and Pi looked at each other, just as confused as Maki.
“What are they doing sleeping outside?” Toma asked the unknown.
“How should I know? Jin was the one with the keys.” Tomo started walking towards the cottages with Toma, Maki and Akira following behind him.
“So Maki, can I come visit you sometime?” Pi heard Toma ask.
Tomo started feeling slightly uncomfortable but tried his best to ignore it and keep walking on without looking back. Why would he do that in the first place?
Sometimes the obvious is not always seen or thought of.

“What are we going to do?” Mao wanted to cry.
She was tired, hungry and feeling very cold from her damp clothes. Jun looked at her and hugged her close.
“Ah. It’s the love birds.” The old man from the ice cream shop greeted them as he walked past.
“Chotto! Do you know how to get back to this hotel?” Jun pulled out a wet and crinkled piece of paper. The old man stared at it for awhile, trying to decipher it like a code.
“You were here the whole night?” The old man didn’t answer his question but stared at Mao who was shivering uncontrollably. “My goodness! You poor birds.”
“Do you know how to?” Jun asked again, hoping that the old man would actually answer his question. The old man looked at the piece of paper again.
“No, but you can use my telephone at the store to call for some help.” The old man scratched his short white hair, slightly embarrassed that he didn’t know the way. “Don’t you younger people have- what do you call them things again? The small telephone things?”
“Mobile Phones. Yeah but the batteries died.” Jun explained and helped Mao to walk as they followed the old man.
“Ahh. Technology these days, you can never trust them.” The old man started to ramble about what it was like in his time.
This was going to be a long walk.
