Chapter 8 – A Promise Is A Promise

♪ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ♪

“Moshi moshi? (Hello, in phonetic language)” Maki answered her phone which was vibrating in her work apron. Lucky for her it was her break time and she could take the call.

“Is this Horikita-san?” A female voice on the other line asked.

“Hai, doushite? (Why?)” Maki asked

“Ah, Horikita-san, I'm sorry to call you at this moment but this is the school nurse of Akira's school,”

Nurse? What happened? Was there some kind of accident that Akira had been involved with? Maki started to panic as negative thoughts started running through her head. Please no, she pleaded silently with Kami-sama.

“Now, there's nothing to worry about,” Maki sighed with relief, but then why was the nurse calling her then? “It's just that Akira's running a slight fever and if it's okay that you could take him home? We don't want the other kids getting it as well,” the nurse explained.

Maki looked at the time, she couldn't go now since she still had work but then again this is her child we are talking about.

“Hai, I'll be there as soon as I can,” She replied and closed her phone shut. She put it back into her work apron and knocked on her manager's office door.

“Come in,” she heard her manager say from insides his office. “Ah, Maki-chan! What can I do for you?” A man in his 40's or so looked up from his desk filled with paper work and asked Maki.

“Manager, I was wondering if I could leave right now?” She dared to ask.

The manager thought for awhile, “Doushite? (Why?)” he asked.

“My son's school called and told me that he's sick,” she explained.

The manager nodded, “I understand then,” he gave a little chuckle. “You may leave but you will have to work extra on Friday,”

Maki's face shot up a smile, “Arigatou (Thank You) Manager!”

“Iie (No,) that's okay, I understand, I'm a parent too,” the manager smiled.

“He wasn't sick this morning,” Maki explained to the nurse as she came to pick him up. Both the nurse and Maki looked at Akira who had fallen asleep on the beds at the school clinic.

“Maybe he caught it off another student,” the school nurse suggested. Maki nodded, thinking that was the case. “You should see a doctor though, just in case.”

“Hai, I think I'll take him now,” Maki said.

“There's one right around the corner, it would be a good place to go,” the nurse wrote something on the back of small card paper with the school and her number on it. “Here's the address, it's just left and at the end of this block,” she handed the card to Maki which she looked at and placed in her pocket.

“Arigatou,” Maki thanked the nurse and carried the sleeping Akira. He rested his cheek on her shoulder and continued to drift into his dreamland.

Maki decided to just walk there instead of getting her car, after all the nurse said it was only at the end of this block and the school was probably the halfway mark. Besides, it wasn't a bad day for a walk. Although the weather could be a bit cooler it wasn't all that bad and it was nice to smell the fresh fragrance in the air.

Once she finally got to the clinic, she entered and walked up to the reception desk.

“Sumimasen (Excuse me,) ano (Uhmm,) I need to see a doctor,” she told the receptionist.

“Do you have a booking?” the receptionist replied with a bored tone, well who wouldn't be bored? You had to repeat yourself most of the time.

“Iie,” Maki said.

The nurse flipped over some pages from what looked like a diary that was in front of her. It was filled with numerous names and numbers everywhere. She scrolled down the page with today's date and found an opening slot.

“Is it for you?” The receptionist asked.

Maki shook her head, “Iie, it's for my son,” she replied.

The nurse looked up and her eyes slightly widened a bit from shock. 'A bit young isn't she?' she thought inside her head. “E..eh?”

“It's for my son?” Maki repeated ignoring the fact that the receptionist looked surprised to know, just like most people.

“A..ah, okay. What's his name?” The receptionist got a pen and wrote down Akira's name. “Okay, you're lucky that one of the patients canceled,” she looked at the old owl shaped clock hanging on the wall behind her. “10 minutes,” she said.

Maki nodded and thanked her. She scanned the room hoping for an empty seat and luckily saw one right next to a guy who looked just a bit older then her, with orange hair. She made her way to the seat.

“Sumimasen, is anyone sitting here?” She asked the guy, who moved his eyes from the magazine he was reading to Maki.

He shook his head, “Iie, dozo (Go ahead,)”

Maki nodded her head and smiled. She occupied the seat and repositioned Akira so that she was cradling him. Again, Akira had drooled in his sleep. Maki looked for tissues in her bag, but she couldn't seem to find any. The guy, looked at Maki and the little boy in her arms curiously. Once he had figured out what Maki was looking for, he reached for his pocket, took out a handkerchief and offered it to Maki.

“Here,” Maki looked up and saw the handkerchief in front of her and then curiously looked at the guy offering it to her. “Don't worry, just take it,” he assured her.

Maki slowly reached out for the handkerchief in his hands. “Arigatou,” she said and then hesitantly began wiping Akira's running drool from his mouth.

Once she had finished she curiously looked at the guy who had offered her the handkerchief. The guy had looked at Maki as well and they both caught each other staring at one another. Maki quickly diverted her gaze back to her son while the guy simply smiled. Furthermore, he closed the magazine he was reading.

“Ikuta Toma,” he said with a smile on his face.

Maki turned back to look at the guy and smiled back, “Horikita Maki,” she introduced herself.

“Ikuta-san! Horikita-san! The doctors are waiting for you,” the receptionist yelled and two nurses came out each carrying brown folders.

Maki positioned Akira with his cheek resting on her shoulder again and then stood up followed by Toma.

“Well, nice meeting you Horikita-san,” Toma smiled again

“Likewise Ikuta-san,” she again returned the smile and then they both parted different ways.

“Go in,” the nurse opened the door for Maki, which she stepped in followed by the nurse. “Dr, the next patient is here,” the doctor, who was sitting with his back towards them swung his chair around and stood up.

“Maki?”

“Tomo?” Both of them said at the same time, shocked to see one other. The nurse looked from Maki to Tomo, back and fourth.

“Do you know each other?” She asked in confusion.

“Yeah,” Tomo answered his nurses question. “Please sit Maki,” and pointed to the chair in front of just one of the desks inside the room. Once Maki had been seated, Tomo sat behind the desk. “So why are you here? Are you sick?” He asked curiously.

“Iie, I'm not sick. Akira is,” she replied and positioned Akira like what she had done in the waiting room.

Once again, drool was coming out of his mouth to which Maki wiped with the handkerchief she had been given with earlier. For a moment there, Tomo's eyes looked like they had widened but then he continued to observe Akira.

“What's wrong with him?” Tomo rolled his chair closer to Maki's chair and got out his equipment to check. Maki supported Akira's back as she made him slightly sit up although he was still sleeping. Tomo continued to use his equipment to check Akira's health.

“He was fine this morning, after the whole house warming party thing,” Maki explained what she had explained to the school nurse. Tomo nodded his head, “Demo, I just got a call from the school nurse saying that he had a fever,”

Tomo rolled his chair back behind his desk and took out a blank notebook, where he began scribbling something down. He then ripped it out and then handed to the nurse who took it and left the room.

“I don't think it's anything to serious then,” he said and then looked at Akira and Maki. “Here, place him on the bed for awhile,” he stood up from his chair and got the clinic bed ready.

Maki stood up but then Tomo offered to carry Akira to the bed. Maki nodded, accepting the offer since Akira was getting kind of heavy for her to carry. Tomo lifted Akira up from Maki's lap and placed him gently on the bed. Akira slightly stirred in his sleep, probably feeling the discomfort of being sick.

“The nurse just went to go and make the medicine for him,” he explained and Maki nodded.

Tomo then sat back down at his desk, “So how are you doing?”

“E..eh? Me?” Maki asked not expecting him to make some kind of small talk.

“Well, I don't see anyone else in the room,” he sarcastically began searching the room “Well, anyone else who is awake that is,” he added since Akira was in the room. He slightly chuckled.

Maki slightly blushed in embarrassment. “Well, I'm good,” she answered his question. “Anata? (You?)”

“Alright I suppose,”

“You suppose?” Maki looked at him curiously, was he not feeling good?

Again, he chuckled softly “Well, working is a good way to spend my day off huh?”

“Oh,” Maki said, “At least you've got a proper job,” she pointed out to him.

Tomo raised his eyebrows slightly, thinking what kinda of job Maki might have. “What's your job then?”

Maki didn't get a chance to answer as Akira had started stirring in his sleep more, looking as if he was feeling more and more uncomfortable until he quickly sat up and yelled,

“Okaa-chan! (Mummy!)”

Both Tomo and Maki looked at Akira.

“What's wrong honey?” Maki asked as she walked up to her son, hugged Akira and rubbed his back in hope to calm him down.
“Akumu...Akumu...Akumu...(Nightmare),” he kept chanting in between his sobs.

“Shh, it's okay, okaa-chan's here now, don't cry,” she comforted her son.

Meanwhile Tomo went back to his desk and opened up one of his drawers, in search of finding something. He then stood where Akira could see him but where Maki's back was facing him because she was still hugging Akira. He waved a lollipop in front of Akira's face and Akira stopped crying but still little sniffles were heard from him. Maki stopped hugging Akira and turned around to see Tomo offering Akira a lollipop.

Akira looked at his mum as if he wanted approval and then when he saw her nodding he slowly raised his hand and took the lollipop from Tomo's hands.

“Arigatou, Uncle Tomo,” Akira softly said in between his small sniffles now. He the gave it to Maki so that she could tear off the packaging. “Uncle Tomo?”

Tomo had again, sat down behind his desk and started scribbling down more things on the notepad in front of him but he looked up when Akira called out for him.

“Hai, nanda (What is it?)” he replied but never left his desk and continued scribbling something down on his pad.

“When are you going to buy me ice-cream?”

The question caused Tomo to look up from his pad and think for awhile.

“You promised,” Akira added, after Tomo had been silent for awhile.

Tomo looked at Akira for awhile; who had a small pout on his face, and then looked at Maki who curiously stared at him, waiting for him to answer Akira's question.

The nurse interrupted his train of thought when she entered the room and handed Tomo the medicine that she was told to go and make for Akira.

“Yamashita-sensei (Doctor?) Here's the medicine you asked for,” she said as she handed the medicine to Tomo.

“Ah, arigatou, you may leave for the day now,” Tomo dismissed the nurse. She bowed and exited out of the room, slightly too fast as if she was in a hurry. Once the nurse left Tomo handed the medicine to Maki. “He has to take this everyday after dinner and once he's finished come back and see me,”

Maki nodded processing the information about Akira's medication plan in her head. She looked at the bottle to see if how much mL she needed to give him and it was written on the bottle.

“Well, ikimashou, (Let's go)” Tomo said as he took off his white doctor's coat and placed it inside a cupboard.

Maki tilted her head slightly in a confused daze, meanwhile Akira still licked his lollipop happily but then got off the bed slowly so that he was on the ground and followed Tomo.

“Doko? (Where?)” Maki asked.

“To get ice-cream okaa-chan!” Akira happily told Maki.
