Chapter 05 – Inner Demons

Jade entered the café and was immediately spotted by Reiji. He waved her over and soon they were sitting face to face.

‘How have you been?’ Reiji whispered softly.

‘I’ve been fine. How are you?’

‘I’m alright.’

Awkward silence hung in the air as Jade took a sip of her coffee.

‘Look Jade…’ Reiji reached out for Jade’s hand but the latter hastily withdrew them. Though saddened by her reaction, he was determined to make her understand. His voice became serious as he looked straight into her eyes.

‘I don’t know how you know about Kira but you have to understand one thing, I was an unwilling accomplice.’

Jade turned away from his gaze and began stirring her coffee.

‘Is it really?’ She continued without once glancing up. ‘When you were first contacted, what motivated you? Was it not greed and selfish ambition?’

‘Jade, I did not have a choice.’ Reiji tried to reason with the

‘Everyone has a choice! It’s a matter of choosing the right one!’ Jade retorted, her voice getting louder.

“Can you really claim to be innocent?’ Her voice had softened, but Reiji still cringed under her scrutinizing gaze.

‘Yes…yes, you’re right. That’s why…I’ve decided to give myself up…’

His response came as a surprise to Jade. She had expected him to insist his innocence. She had known him as an ambitious businessman and had not expected him to give up everything.

‘…I’ll go to the police and tell them everything…’

‘But you’ll die!’ Jade burst before she could stop herself. If Reiji surrendered himself to the police, that would make him a target of Kira. The thought of Reiji dying was just too painful.

Reiji smiled weakly at her. ‘I’m glad to see you still care.’

Jade didn’t reply but a tinge of red crept up her cheeks.

‘But what would you have me do?’
‘I–I don’t know.’

‘You don’t want me to go to the police…you don’t want me to be with Kira, what exactly do I do to keep you by my side?’ Though his voice was low, his words resounded with intensity equalled only by the anguish in his eyes.

For a while, neither made a movement neither could. How do you response to such a confession. Finally, the silence became unbearable.

‘We… we should talk to L. He can help.’

‘You know L? Is that how you know about Kira…?’

‘It doesn’t matter.’ Jade said firmly and was glad when Reiji took the hint and stopped asking questions.

‘I’ll tell him and see what he thinks. I’ll call you then, right now I have to go.’

Jade got up to go and stopped when she heard her name.

‘Jade, thank you.’

‘You have nothing to thank me for.’

‘Yes, I do.’

‘I have to go.’

Reiji watched as Jade exited the café and got into a cab before pulling out his phone. Flipping it, he speed-dialled a number and spoke quietly into the speaker.

‘She just left. Make sure you don’t get caught.’

When Jade stepped into the headquarters, Soichiro and Mogi were off to one corner while Light and Ryuzaki sat in front of the monitors. Jade said her hello’s then took her seat at a desk near Light. Ryuzaki was busy eating his cake while Light seemed to be deep in thought. Jade pretended to work but kept her eye on Light. Though still wary of him, she was also concerned. In the past weeks that she had spent with Light, Jade had come to consider him as a friend. He was the complete opposite of the man she had imagined him to be. He was hardworking, intelligent, funny, and had a strong sense of right and wrong. He was nothing like the obsessed maniac portrayed in the books, or perhaps, it was because of the Death Note’s influence that he had become one at all. Pulling away from her thoughts, she noticed Ryuzaki getting up to get more cake. Ever since Jade had told L about the Death Note, Ryuzaki had released Light from the handcuffs, finding it no longer necessary to watch him. As soon as Ryuzaki disappeared into the kitchen, Jade went over to Light.

‘You okay?’ Jade asked him.

Light’s head snapped up and seeing Jade’s concerned face gave her a weak smile. ‘Yes, yes, I’m fine.’

‘No you’re not. What is it?’

Light’s face became hesitant but seeing Jade’s unyielding face he reluctantly told her.

‘It’s just…you know how we’ve been investigating Kira? The first one? How he acts and how he thinks? His ideals are just so similar to mine. And I, I can’t help but think…’

Realization dawned on Jade. Light was suspecting himself as Kira!

‘I–I can’t help but think I’m Kira.’ Light finally admitted.

‘Is that it?’ Light glance up at her and nodded.

Leaning down, Jade placed both hands on his shoulders and looked him right in the eye.

‘Look at me.’ She commanded. ‘You. Are. Not. Kira.’

‘But–but I …’

‘No.’ Jade asserted. ‘You are not him, Light.’

It was as if a burden had been lifted off Light. For the past days he had been fighting himself. He had refused to believe he was Kira but all the signs were there. He believed the world needed to be rid of evil. He believed in using extreme measures to do so. But a side to him also loathe what Kira had done. It had not been justice, it had been murder, plain and simple. Nonetheless, the thought that he might be Kira had tormented his very soul. Jade’s words seem to wash away all those fears. He gave Jade’s hand a squeeze in appreciation and she replied with a smile.

‘Come with me.’ She grabbed her coat then headed for the door.

‘Huh? Where are we going?’ Light looked surprised but followed her lead.

They passed by Ryuzaki who had just returned from the kitchen and was now looking at them with a questioning face.

‘We’ll be back soon, Ryuzaki.’ Jade told him and without waiting for a reply, they left the headquarters.

Jade and Light walked side by side, laughing as they went. They had just come from the nearby cheesecake café and were now heading back to the headquarters. They had spent the past hour chatting and eating, the earlier problems forgotten. Soon they arrived at the headquarters’ entrance. Before entering the building though, Light turned to face Jade causing her to pause.

‘What is it?’ She asked curiously.

‘Thank you.’ Light smiled, his eyes conveying his sincerity.

It was the first time she had seen him smile like that, his guard down and his heart bare.

Taken aback, she started stuttering but managed a reply in the end, ‘You d–don’t have to thank me…’

‘No, I do.’ Light put a finger to her lips before she could protest and continued. ‘It may have been a small thing to you, but your words, they’ve set me free.’

Pulling his finger away, Light smiled once more before heading inside the building.

Jade watched him go. Seeing him smile like that had caused Jade to realize how handsome Light really was and the thought made her blush. Her heart still thumping, she followed him inside.

Unknown to Jade and Light, someone watched them with jealous eyes. Someone who had seen them leave and enter the same building. Someone who watch their little exchange in the café and now outside the building. Someone who had just set in motion events that will determine the fate of Kira and this world.

Reiji Namikawa.
