Chapter 9

Back and Again ♥

Leila, Bosco, and Chris were sitting in the same row consecutively. Leila actually didn’t want to sit next to the pighead since that memory still was vivid inside her head but Chris had insisted that she sat with them lest the professor tried to pick on her again. She wasn’t afraid of getting picked on; she was more afraid of sitting next to the jerk.

Chris was supposed to sit next to Bosco but he somehow disappeared from his side and appeared next to Leila, such that she was now between them. Bosco cast an annoyed glance at Chris who only smiled back innocently.

Professor Joe Ma entered the classroom, his face fixed with blank solemnity as though the whole world owed him. “Good morning, class. I had just finished through the process of grading all of your essays. Honestly speaking, I am truly disappointed and unsatisfied with every single one of them. None had gotten A marks. There were a lot of B’s, C’s, D’s and an F…” He continued to drone on about his standards and expectations. Everyone was eager to get their essay back, not to hear his monotonous voice.

At last, Joe Ma passed back all of the essays.

Bosco looked at his. Solid C.

Leila looked at hers, disappointment drowning inside her eyes. Bosco peeked at her paper and snorted. “At least I didn’t get an F,” he declared so as to annoy her.

Leila could not believe it. In no way could she. Why was her paper the only ‘F’? She had put so many effort, time, and energy into it, why did she not get a ‘D’ at least? An F? Leila’s mood and enthusiasm dunked to the lowest. That one word was truly powerful.

“Are there any questions regarding the grades?” Joe Ma asked.

Leila shot up from her seat instantly.

“Yes?”

“I believe I don’t deserve this F.” Leila solemnly stated.

“Oh so yours was the paper that was talking about philosophy isn’t it?” Joe Ma mocked.

Leila gritted her teeth. “It was obvious you didn’t even take a considerate look over the essay when you marked this F!”

“I didn’t? But I remember clearly what it talked about. It yapped on and on and on about philosophy. How can I miss it?”

“Bull shit! Philosophy was only a small part in it. More specifically, the beginning! Obviously you didn’t even bother to flick to the third page!”

“This is a law class, not philosophy. Apparently it is your problem and your fault for not making the beginning clear or conveying enough about laws. I was reading it and I, for a second, thought the essay slipped into the bundle by accident!” Joe Ma’s words dripped with heavy taunt as he criticized her harshly. “Not only you failed at the assignment, you failed at writing!”

“This is unfair. Every essay has its own essence, and so does mine! It is clear that you are biased against me and hated my essay the moment you see the word philosophy!” Leila argued feverishly. The class watched with amusement as they had never seen such a stubborn and hotheaded girl.

“That is crap.” Joe Ma refuted hotly. “This is my class and I have the right to judge on an individual’s work according to my opinion.”

“The problem is: your opinion is too narrow-minded!” Pissed off, Leila could no longer hold it back. “I have never seen such an imprudent professor like you who refuses to accept others’ opinions, who refuses to encourage a student, and who refuses to act in justice! The funny irony here is that you are teaching law. Yet every thing about you is marked with injustice!”

“Leila Tong! You shut your mouth right now!” Joe Ma demanded, having half the urge to kick her out of his classroom.

“I am sorry but this is my opinion, and since you forced me to accept your petty one, you must accept mines!”

“You do not speak to me like that!”

“And you can belittle me like you’re God? What world is this? Do I have to oblige to your every order?” Leila was out of control. Every anger, every resentment rushed to her veins like a coursing river, relentless and stormy.

Chris watched Leila dreamily, loving her rebellious and stubborn attitude yet he was weak and afraid to back her up. The show seemed entertaining for Bosco as he watched the girl with amusement. Leila truly astounded him.

“Get out of my classroom and don’t ever appear again!” Joe ordered, his veins threatened to pop. Flames flickered in his eyes as the humiliation sank into his bones.

“That would be my pleasure! I don't fancy the idea of staying in an unjustified classroom!” Leila shot back arrogantly. “Who here agrees with me that Joe Ma is totally a loser who failed at his subject of teaching law? I mean, have you guys ever learned anything in this class besides monotonous rules that really don’t even matter?”

Nobody answered as they all glanced at each other. Honestly speaking, who the hell would go against the Professor Joe Ma when he was clearly the one who determines the grades? They didn't pay heaps of money to get into law school for nothing. Leila’s heart sank as she witnessed the nil support from her classmates.

Joe Ma smirked. Authority sure has it ways to greet easy victories. “Miss Tong, It is clear that you are the only one who was dissatisfied with my cla--”

“Yo Joe Ma! Count me in!” Bosco suddenly stood up from his seat, giving every one a shock. Usually he was the quiet one in the class. Because of his low confidence in academics, Bosco never really participated or gave an effort. “I really want to say this long ago, but you really sucks ass Joe Ma! And man, you gave my excellent, beyond miraculous, beautiful essay a freaking ‘C’? It totally deserved an A+ and I don’t know what the hell is wrong with your brain but I know you need to have it rechecked again before you decide to determine my extravagant essay a damn C!” Leila looked astonishingly at Bosco. Was he kidding her? A C was a passing grade! Now that he was going against him, he surely will not pass at all! “Come on, Leila dude. You have my support!” Bosco pounded his chest encouragingly.

“It appears to me that not only Leila Tong is brainless, Bosco Wong is announcing his stupidity,” Joe Ma smirked sinisterly as he glared at the class as if to demand them to give a chuckle.

“Hey, at least we’re not a jackass!” Bosco refuted. “How dare you call the Bosco Wong stupid. I’m pretty sure I am smarter and better looking than you could ever be!” His arrogant side submerged. “And it’s really pitiful how you’re attacking on a girl who’s simply just trying to speak up her mind. Like is it a crime just trying? If you ask me, I say that Leila could be a magnificent lawyer than you with your years of education and law degrees could ever be!!”

Joe’s nose flared with indignity, affronted, but then he smiled. “I’m sure nothing will ever come out of you despite your rich background.”

Bosco felt insulted but he was disinclined to show such a face to Joe Ma. Still it was something too harsh for a comeback. Leila immediately spoke up. “He can become anyone he wants to be because he surely has the talents and the confidence. Nothing will stop him when he is determined. You on the other hand will forever be stuck in this position, hated and unsupported for who you are!” Bosco glanced at Leila, dumbfounded by her belief and support for him.

“BOSCO WONG, LEILA TONG. YOU TWO! Get the fuck out of my class!” Out of patience, Joe Ma slammed his ruler against his table, breeding a loud deafening sound that spoke of his anger.

Bosco rolled his eyes. “Save the act Joe Ma. Why don’t you just shove your bad acting skills………in your mouth or something!” Grabbing Leila’s hand, he pulled her out of the rows and down the isles, hopping the stairs in huge steps. Leila almost tumbled and lost her balance. Every one watched them admiringly, adoring them for their guts. When Bosco was right in front of Joe, he slapped his own butt. “Kiss my ass goodbye!” With that, he pulled Leila down small space and out of the door.

---------------------------------------------

Silence permeated the air as the duo sat still in their seats. After running out of class, Leila stormed into the campus' library, and Bosco, having no choice, strung along. Despite the peaceful, quiet atmopshere set in the library, they both were tickled in a fit of snickers and soft chucklings that made their tummies twist and swell in infinitesimal twirls.

As much as she hated to admit, Leila felt more than grateful for his support back in the classroom. At the very least, she left with the most pride and satisfaction of seeing Joe Ma pissed to a point his face was stained in spots of red, his head almost exploding into a mountain of palpable smoke. The pleasure did not last long, though. When her sensible side of her wacked her back to the realization that she had insulted a professor, she knew that odds were that she likely would get expelled, or banished from his class. Which means that her hard work over the past weeks was dissipated for a momentary delight. Her muscles sank in stiffness as the truth drilled in. Was that worth it?

She jerked when strong hands rested on her shoulders.

"Relax," Bosco instructed, his voice hardly audible, yet forcing her still with the firm application of his hands.

He'd moved from the seat, and now positioned directly behind her chair. Despite her tense muscles, Leila didn't flee from his touch, or jerk away either, and they posed there for a moment in the silence before one of them finally spoke.

"What are you doing?" Leila managed to ask, eyebrows drawn thick in confusion. There had been no oppurtunities for her to ask why he had helped her, why he was so nice to her, but Leila didn't dare address that matter...

Gentle fingers began pressing against her shoulder, sending a force that abated the tension in her muscles. Her head fell forward of its own accord, and she sporadically breathed out content sighs.

"Never knew you were good in this..." Leila unconsciously mumbled loud enough for him to hear. "I'd pegged you the spoiled good-for-nothing brat."

"Eh, gotta have some of my own tricks," Bosco replied, tightening the pressure between his fingers to bring her the relaxation she needed. "You girls like guys taking care of you, don't you?"

"I'm not like them. I won't fall for the trick," Leila rebutted, the muscles in her arms threatening to shoot up and jerk from his massage.

"Tell me to stop," Bosco murmured in her ear, the taunt in his voice tangible. He worked over each muscle until its supplication was inevitable, drawing a shudder over Leila's body that made her quivering for more. A tight smile crept up to the side of his lips when he sensed she didn't want to break away in spite of her words. "So, what are your plans now? You're not gonna give up law because of Joe Ma, are you?"

"No, of course not," she flatly said.

"Ah I see."

"He's not the only professor around. If he doesn't want me in his class, I'll sign up for another. There's nothing he can do about it." There was a moment of silence as his hands kept moving in pleasurable motions, and Leila felt like she was sinking further into a velvety cocoon that was too hard to break through. "W-why did you do that?" Leila finally mustered the courage to ask. "Why did you help me? You got a C! That's good enough, considering it's from Joe Ma."

Bosco shrugged, displaying the least of concern about the matter. "Eh, that class is something I signed up just for the heck of it. I just wanted to try something new, you know? To show my parents. But whatever. Seems like it's not working out. Never liked that tightass anyway."

"Oh, right. I almost forgot. You're a rich boy..." The way she said it brought an irritation to surge up his throat, but he only responded with a strong, merciless grip on her shoulders. Leila yelped, swinging a hand up to the sore spot. "Ow! Jerk! What was that for?"

He smirked. "Oops. It was a slip."

"Yeah, right." She swiveled her body around so that she was facing him, looking up. "If I was such a sore in your eye, you could've just told me. And you definitely didn't need to help me."

"This is what I get for offering a hand to the weak?" Bosco's eye shot wide, folding his arms. "Gee, great way to make me feel appreciated."

"Who are you calling the weak?" Leila glared.

It was almost impossible not to smile at the predictability of her response, but he restrained from having to break out in a fit of laughter. "But it's a fact that I was the only one in the whole classroom of fifty-nine students that was bold enough to stand up for you, right? So you see, I was expecting some kind of a... form of gratitude. Yeah." He clucked his hands in his pockets, looking shy almost.

"..."

Bosco rolled his eyes. "You know what, forget it. Just call me stupid. Helping out an ungrateful little pet, and risking my position in that class. Wow, I should win the dummy award, huh."

The words struck her, and Leila was brought back to feeling like she was owing him. It was hardly believable that they used to hate each other so much when today they were completely indulged in one mind, getting along for once. She couldn’t understand why Bosco had helped her the way he did. She had thought all this time he hated her and couldn’t wait to see her drown in hell, but today had rightfully proved her petty thoughts wrong. Maybe I was wrong about him all along… she thought. “Bosco… Thanks…” She said sincerely, offering him a smile of appreciation.

There was a moment when Bosco felt the amusement of hearing those words, but he instantly stopped. Something struck him. What the heck are you doing Bosco Wong? You’re supposed to make Leila hate you! Now you got her thanking you for what you did! You’re so stupid, Bosco Wong! It has been three weeks already and you didn’t even score a bit! He hit himself in the head frustratingly.

Leila stared at him weirdly. “What are you doing?”

“Huh? Oh, I hit my head when I laugh too much. It helps circulation.” That was probably the stupidest things Bosco had ever said in his entire life.

“Really?” Leila looked at him and then knocked him in the head five times. “Hmm, it’s pretty fun!” She knocked him again, laughing.

“Quit it!” Bosco yelled, annoyed. He rubbed his head, looking at her in disbelief. How could she knock him so hard?! It’s like she wanted his brain to stop functioning. Stupid witch face. She only giggled and suddenly, Bosco caught himself admiring her voice.

"Hey, why are you looking at me like that?" Her eyebrows rose when she detected something glimmering behind those irises. Leila stopped giggling when she realized he was staring at her in an odd way, his eyes so intense as if looking through her. She immediately became aware of what he was thinking and her angry side submerged. She slapped him.

Bosco snapped back to reality. “What the hell?”

“You pervert!” She hissed, causing a few glances shooting their way. Even the librarian looked up from what she was doing.

Bosco only slyly smirked, seeing that it was a gap for him to leap through, and grab the chance. "Yeah, I'm a real pervert, did you just realize that? If you don't like it, then OK---just move out. Simple as that."

"Move out?" Leila's ears opened outrageously. "You're the one that should move out because everytime I see you, I just wanna---" Finishing that sentence was going to lead to badness, and Leila stopped herself before she could put herself at risk to indulge herself into another unnecesarry argument. The one with Joa Ma had already sucked out any vestiges of energy inside her.

"Yeah. Seeing you around makes me wanna crash my head to the wall, too."

His admission was what rejuvenated Leila into an argument-mode again. "Oh? Then why don't you help make both our lives easier and leave? It's not even your home to begin with."

"My apartment is renovating, remember?" Bosco reused the excuse. "And why should I anyway? You're the outcast here, so it's best if you make the move." His hands were fumbling inside his pockets in nervous jitters. It was so close. If only he hypnotized her to do what he said, then everything would work out! But no. Her misty gaze made it difficult to tell if she was taking in his words. Damnit.

"Spill. What is it that you want? Something tells me you have more up your sleeves than it looks."

Bosco shrugged.

"That doesn't tell me the answer."

"Maybe it's because... I don't rightly know." So that was a lie, but Raymond would nail his head if he told her flatly out the truth.

"That's one more reason to dislike you," Leila spat harshly, every word like a rock throwing at his face. "You always give this aura that makes it hard to trust you. I don't know if it's because I had a bad impression, but nothing ever comes out good from us. One moment, you piss me off to no end, and I just wanna smack a pan flat against your face sometimes. Another moment, you act nice and caring. Tell me, you just want to play me like a---"

"What? I do not!"

"---fool. And just telling you, I am not about to be one of your victims. Nor do I want to be buried in this kind of rubble."

"Shut the---"

"Oh, feeling peckish now, huh? It's about time you---"

"---hell up."

Then seemingly out of nowhere, a shadow crept up behind Bosco and Leila, tapping both of their shoulders. "Excuse me. But you two are being disruptive and talking way too loud. Would you leave, please?"
