Chapter Twenty One ‘Your Apology Don’t Count!’

Charlene's P.O.V

When she was safely sitting on her chair, in her office she let the tears that she had been fighting back fall down her cheeks. Kenny burst in the room. He stared at her, walking up to stand beside her. He kneeled down to her level. She hugged him tightly and sobbed on his shoulders. He hugged her back not knowing what else to do.

Few minutes went by until Charlene pulled back. Kenny then got the courage to ask her what had happened and how does she know the guy. She took her time replying. ‘I met him last week and fell in love with him,’ she plainly said.

‘Does he love you?’

She gave a weak laugh. ‘Does it look like it to you?’ she looked away from him. She knew she would be crying again. ‘He kissed me… He made me believe… that there will be more,’ she sobbed quietly.

‘His the one in lost,’ Kenny softly said. ‘He doesn’t know what a great girl you are!’

She stared at him. ‘Ruby is a lucky girl, you know,’ she wiped her tears away. ‘You will make her happy.’

‘You’ll find someone better than that guy!’ he yelled out. ‘Come on, he’s marrying Daisy for crying out loud! He must be in cracks!’

He made her feel better. She laughed at the jokes he was making. They actually finished work early. Kenny asked if she would like to come down his later on. She declined. She didn’t want to be in between him and ruby. After all he is going to propose to her tonight. She left him by his car making her way to her apartment.

She had a cold shower. She thought of what she was going to do. She couldn’t forget him that easily. She wrapped her towel around her body with another in a turban shape on her hair. She was smoothly putting on oil on her body when the buzzer sounded in her apartment.

‘Who is it?’ she asked through the telecom.

‘It’s me Edison.’ She froze. What should she do? She wanted to make some excuses but didn’t have any. It was too late to say anything, as he knew she was in already.

‘Come on up,’ she buzzed him through. She was too nervous to notice that she was still wrapped around her towel. She waited for him to come up. When he knocked she quickly flung it open. His jaws dropped. He was going to say hello she knew but couldn’t say anything.

‘Aren’t… you going… to…’ he gulped. She waited impatiently. ‘To get dressed?’ He looked away.

She looked down. Oh no! She thought. Damn! Why didn’t I get dressed? She hoped she wasn’t blushing. Pretending she didn’t care, she snapped at him. ‘What are you doing here?’

‘Can I come in?’ he asked. She sighed. Letting the door go she nodded him to come in. He walked swiftly to her two-bed room apartment. The kitchen was joined with the living room. The breakfast counter was in between the two rooms. She didn’t want a fancy apartment like she usually gets. If she was ‘undercover’ here, she might as well go with it. Edison stood uncomfortably in her living room. She folded her arms and tapped her feet waiting for him to continue. ‘I can’t talk with you like that!’ he exclaimed, pointing at her.

‘Fine!’ she left him standing there while she retrieved to her room. She put on her undergarments and then a sky blue dress that clung to her body and flung above her knees. She went back to the living room. ‘Go on,’ she ordered.

He stared at her. She raised her eyebrow angrily. ‘I came here to apologise to you,’ he rapidly said.

‘Don’t bother,’ she muttered.

‘Please,’ he begged. ‘I’m really sorry that I played you like that.’

‘One thing you should know… your apologise don’t count one bit to me!’ she spat out. She knew she was being harsh but she was hurt. She didn’t want to put her guard down. She had to stay strong and calm.

‘Don’t do this. I came to explain,’ he was pleading now.

She knew she will regret it if she didn’t hear him out. ‘Go on explain!’

‘I really liked you,’ this made her snort. ‘I still do like you,’ he carried on, ignoring her. ‘The reason we can’t carry on is because…’

‘You got a fiancée,’ she interrupted him to finish his sentence.

‘No,’ he rushed in. ‘I was promise to her a year ago by my parents.’ She looked at him deeply to see if he was telling the truth. ‘You see, I made a mistake sleeping with her a year ago and we got found out. My parents were ashamed of me to embarrass them like that, so they promised that I will get married to her in a year’s time.’

‘Then why did you make me fall in love with you?’ she blurted it out. She couldn’t stop the words coming out.

He looked at her in disbelief. She clamped her mouth. ‘I didn’t mean this to happen. I really do like you,’ he carried on with his apologize.

‘Like I said before your apologise don’t count,’ she said coldly. ‘If you don’t mind I’ve got a date.’ She looked at the door implying him to use it. He nodded his head as if understanding he had it coming. He walked towards the door with his head bowed down.

Opening the door he turned around. ‘I am really sorry. Hope you find the right guy,’ with that he left closing the door shut. She slowly slid to the floor sobbing. Why did he have to come back? She thought.

His words haunted her.

‘…I was promised to her…’

Did she believe that? Should she? She didn’t know what to do. He was driving her crazy! Why, why, why did this have to happen to her?

Before she could think any more she saw the clock on her wall and rushed to get ready for her date.
