‘I’m really glad that you made it,’ Shawn said. They were seated at Daniel’s. It was a famous restaurant in HK. The atmosphere was cosy along with a little romantic feeling.
‘I’m glad you’re glad,’ she joked. He laughed.
‘So, gie…’ he stopped. ‘Can I call you that?’ he asked innocently. She frowned. Why would he want to call me sister?
‘Sure,’ she managed to say. She found him an odd character.
‘Tell, me what do you do, gie?’ he emphasized the word ‘gie’. He leaned in to listen.
‘I’m a fashion designer. That is why I need a graphic designer to express my designs a little,’ she was in her business tone.
‘That’s nice,’ he smiled at her. She frowned. He reminded her of someone. But who? She thought. ‘How do you like HK?’
‘Love it,’ she said. ‘One thing I don’t understand,’ she looked at him straight in the eye. ‘How your mother knew my mother?’
‘Your mother and my mother were best friends since they were young,’ he was lost in thought. ‘She said that your mother was so beautiful that many men fell in love with her along with your father.’ He was back to present now.
‘Do you know how they met?’ she eagerly asked.
‘Yes,’ he hesitated to carry on. She touched his arm to continue. ‘She came to England to study. She wanted to learn literature. Your father went to the same university as her. She was being picked on because she was Chinese. Your father helped her.’ He shrugged.
‘Was she a nice person?’
‘She was a lovely woman,’ he assured her.
‘Tell me about your mother. Is she still alive?’
‘No, she passed away two years ago,’ before she could say anything he stopped her. ‘Don’t pity me. I’m okay. People have to go one day.’ She nodded in agreement. ‘She went with your mother to England to study the same course.’ She leaned forward, interested with his story. ‘She was married with my father…’ he sighed.
‘If you don’t want to continue then you don’t have to,’ she said quietly.
‘I’ll continue. She met another man. I wasn’t born then. She had an affair with him. Had a child with him then left the child and him and went back to my father.’
She was really shocked. ‘Where are the father and child?’
‘They’re around,’ he shrugged.
‘Did you ever meet them?’ she was being nosy she knew but she couldn’t help it. She was like a machine. Questions were coming out of her one after another.
‘Yes. They don’t want anything to do with me. If you were the child would you want your half brother in your life?’ he asked.
‘Urm…’ she thought for a while. ‘Yes, I would. He is after all family. It’s nobody but the families fault,’ she was outraged. She saw him smile. She frowned. What was he smiling for? This wasn’t a happy matter! It is his family’s fault! She didn’t know why she was worked up for. ‘Stop smiling!’ she yelled. ‘It’s not funny at all.’ All eyes were on her now. She didn’t care. She was fuming. He wasn’t smiling no more but laughing. She was got up to leave. He grabbed her arm and pulled her back on her chair.
‘Calm down,’ he said between laughter.
‘Stop laughing now,’ she yelled again.
Gillian’s P.O.V
She was really mad that her parents wanted to have a family dinner. If it was a family dinner what are they doing in a restaurant? Nicholas didn’t care at all. He was happy to be here. He was in his one dreamland probably thinking of Joey. She was seated at Daniels’ Restaurant. It was the best restaurant in HK, as people would say. Why does it have to be best? She thought. Every restaurant’s are the same for her.
She was really bored. Then she heard a woman shout. Normally she wouldn’t care when people made ‘fools’ out of themselves as she put it. They all just wanted to get attention. But what got her attention was that the voice sounded familiar. She looked to see Charlene shouted at a guy who looked familiar to her. She couldn’t see his face. She knew it couldn’t be Edison. She found out before she came here that he has a fiancée. She was furious at him. How could he do that? She never liked him in the first place.
The guy was laughing she could tell. He was shaking as he laughed. He turned to look at the people staring at him, she assumed. Her heart skipped a beat when she knew who it was. It was Shawn! What was he doing with Charlene? Are they now dating? After all she can’t have Edison. His younger than her! She never liked younger guys! She was going crazy in her mind with the questions. But one thing she’s determined is that she will have Shawn. He was the guy she had a crush on for like two years now!
She eavesdropped on their conversation without making it obvious.
‘Stop smiling!’ she heard Charlene yell. ‘It’s not funny at all.’ All eyes were on them. She could tell Charlene was fuming. He wasn’t smiling no more but laughing. Charlene got up to leave but Shawn grabbed her arm and pulled her back on her chair.
‘Calm down,’ she heard him barely between his laughter.
‘Stop laughing now,’ Charlene yelled again.
They had quietened down now. She couldn’t hear their conversation any longer. She felt a pang of jealously. Why of all guys does she have to be with someone I like? Why did these things happen to me? Before she could cry she excused herself from the table, heading for the toilet.
On her way to the toilet she heard someone call out her name. She turned to the caller only to see Charlene waving her hand motioning her to come to her. She stood there thinking for few seconds. One part of her wanted to know what their relationship is and the other wanted to run away and cry. As usual her curiosity got to her first. She made her way to the table.
‘Hi,’ she said putting a smile on her face. She pretended not to see Shawn.
‘Hey, what are you doing here?’ before she could answer she carried on. ‘You know Shawn don’t you? From my uncles’ wedding?’ Charlene raised her eyebrow. What was she saying? Is she trying to meddle? Charlene is always great with that. But is she really meddling?
‘I don’t think so…’ she said. She wasn’t introduced to him.
He looked at her for the first time she came to the table. He was staring at her. Did he recognise her? Will he like me now? She had so many questions running in her mind. This was not any surprise since she’s always like that.
‘I don’t think we met before,’ he frowned as he was thinking. So he didn’t recognise her, she got her answer.
‘Well, let me introduce you guys,’ Charlene cheery said. ‘This is Gillian Chung,’ Charlene waved her hand at him. ‘She’s a great friend of mine.’ She smiled. ‘Gil, this is Shawn Yu, he is like a brother to me.’ She looked at Shawn whose face paled. She frowned. Does he like Charlene? Is that why he didn’t like it when she said that he was like a brother? ‘Come on shake hands,’ Charlene suggested eagerly them.
That is what they did but barely gripped each other’s hands. She felt sad that Shawn wasn’t interested at her. She couldn’t blame it on Charlene. Charlene wasn’t the fault. If she did blame her she would feel like a bitch. So she blamed it on the next best thing. Shawn!
‘Is that what you call a hand shake?’ Charlene joked. She then changed the subject probably because she knew that the atmosphere was not good, she assumed. ‘So, who you with, Gil?’
‘My family,’ she nodded to her family.
Charlene got excited. She told her to keep Shawn accompany while she goes to her family to catch up. She didn’t after all see them for four years.
Charlene P.O.V
Whew! Those guys need to be alone if they wanted to get to know each other. She could tell Gillian like Shawn from the wedding. She didn’t want to meddle first but she wanted to keep her mind off Edison. Now she’s thinking of him again.
She got to the table where the Tse were. She plopped herself in the empty chair. Mr and Mrs Tse were surprised at first no sooner were they attacking her with questions after questions. (They speak Chinese. Nicholas’s parents can’t speak much English.) She laughed. She said it was Nicholas’s fault that they didn’t keep in touch. She was invited to Thanksgiving and she happily obliged.
She looked at the table she came from. Gillian was laughing at what Shawn had said, she assumed. She smiled. This was working. She turned to Nicholas who was in a dreamland since he never greeted her when she came to their table.
‘Hey, Nicholas!’ she waved her hands before his face. He snapped out of his dreamland when she smacked him on his head.
‘Aww, why did you do that for?’ he asked rubbing his head. Then noticed Charlene had done that. ‘What are you doing here?’
‘You don’t want me here?’ she pouted.
‘Of course, I didn’t mean that,’ he changed what he was going to say seeing his parents give him dagger looks.
‘I’ve been invited to Thanksgiving!’ she excitedly exclaimed.
‘Really? Good for you!’ he said sarcastically.
‘So, I heard you’re proposing to Joey!’ she purposely blurted out. He wasn’t really. She couldn’t help but wined him up.
His parents got excited. They congratulated him.
‘I’m so proud of my son,’ his mother cried.
‘Ma! Stop crying!’ he said.
‘Son, I’m so happy you’re settling down,’ his father proudly said.
‘Why?’ he asked her in English. ‘Why did you have to put words in my parents’ mouth?’
‘My boy is all grown up!’ Charlene pretended to cry, ignoring his question. She was still speaking Chinese. He was going to lunge on her to strangle her. She quickly asked him innocently, ‘Is Joey really pregnant?’
This made his mother wail. His fathers’ jaws dropped. Nicholas looked at them for a while then back at her. She was laughing.
‘Why, you little…’ he once again lunged at her but was stopped again, this time by his mother.
‘Nicholas Tse! Don’t you dare touch her!’ he stopped midway. He looked at his mother.
‘But she’s lying,’ he whined. It was just like the old days. She would always get him in trouble and his parents never believed him.
‘How do you say stop lying in English?’ his mother asked her.
‘Stop lying,’ she said in English.
‘St-op lyin,’ his mother struggled with it a bit.
Charlene clapped her hands. ‘That was great Auntie!’ she phrased her. She would always teach little by little to Nicholas’s mother. His mother loved it. His mother loved her. As Nicholas would say ‘more than him’.
He knew his parents wouldn’t believe a word he says so he gave up. But not without adding childishly, ‘You’re not welcome to my wedding!’
Charlene pouted. She was really trying not to laugh out loud. His mother scolded him along with his father. She excused herself before she really did burst out laughing.
At the table she went and stood next to Shawn. ‘So, how are you guys?’
‘Okay,’ Shawn said. Gillian excused herself and went back to the table. Charlene sat back at her chair. ‘Want some desert?’ he asked.
‘Nah, I had too much!’ She rubbed her stomach.
‘Let’s go then,’ he pulled her off her chair grabbing hold of her one hand. He dragged her out of the restaurant after paying.
‘Wei! Where you taking me?’
‘To the beach!’
And that’s where they went. They were playing with the sand and tried to play with the water but it was too cold. After all the winter was on its way. They were playing till midnight. It was then they headed home. They never once noticed that someone was watching them.
Edison’s P.O.V
He didn’t know why he was jealous. But he was. He couldn’t help it. He was being selfish he knew. He didn’t want her with anyone but himself. Can he guarantee the same for himself? He is after all getting married soon.
What got him more jealous was that she was with the same guy from the wedding. He was with Daisy having their second course of meal when they had entered the restaurant. She looked breath taking. Wearing the same blue dress he left her apartment with it. She wore blue-strapped sandals.
He couldn’t concentrate on the words that were coming out of Daisy’s mouth. But there’s no difference with that. It’s always like that for him. He didn’t like the way they were cosy and in deep conversation. He told daisy that he wanted to go. He couldn’t stand the fact that Charlene had someone else. He dropped Daisy off her home and went to the beach to think.
He remembered her face when she saw Daisy kiss him. He saw that she was hurt. He wanted to kill Daisy. They never kissed. He wouldn’t allow it. Now in front of Charlene she had kissed him. He was angry with her that he had told her off. He wanted to go after her but Kenny had got to her before he could. She had called him her ‘friend’! He didn’t like that tagged on him from her.
As he was thinking on the beach in the corner of his eyes he saw two couples playing. They looked familiar to him. He squinted to look at them. There she was playing around with that guy. He was furious now. He wanted to go up to them but knew there was no point. She will hate him for that. He watched them without being seen. She was laughing. His heart did a flip. She took off her sandals and was holding it while she ran from the guy. But midnight came and they made their way back…together… He felt pain in his heart. He also retrieved for home. Regretting… Painful... Sadly…
