Chapter Twenty-Five ‘
She had dropped Gillian off to college telling her to go with the plan and everything will be okay. Gillian will come to the café at four with her friends. She walked down the street as the shops were being opened one by one. She told Kenny she would walk it to work. She had plenty of time. She looked through the windows as she walked pass. Then stopped abruptly in front of the jewellery shop. It has just opened. The shutters opened. She gaped at the display. With a quick think she went inside.
She came out ten minutes later with a small bag in her hand and a wide grin on her face. She walked happily to work.
‘Why so happy today?’ asked Vaness sheepishly.
‘No reason. Can’t a girl just love to come to work?’
‘A girl might but not you,’ he stated. She stuck out her tongue.
‘Tea, please,’ was all she said and went in her office closing the door with her foot. She saw Kenny already here sitting on her chair once again.
‘What’s with you and my chair?’ she joked. He looked up at her and grinned.
‘It’s too comfy.’ She walked up to him. He was using her laptop searching. Before she could say what he’s doing he answered. ‘The Yu Graphic’s wanted to know who our Dot.com is…’
‘And you said there is none?’
‘Not really…’ he said guiltily. ‘I said that I didn’t know who you were using.’
‘So, who are we using?’
‘That’s what I’m searching for,’ he looked back at the screen still searching.
‘I got one,’ she shrieked in his ears unintentionally. He jumped with a yelp. He rubbed his ears.
‘Am I deaf?’ he asked himself.
‘Are you gay?’ she asked quietly.
‘No!’ he yelled in shock. He then knew he got his answer. He smacked Charlene on the back. ‘Don’t ever do that again,’ he warned.
‘Never,’ she said as if she was scared. ‘Anyways,’ she was back in business tone. ‘Edison owns a Dot.com company,’ she suggested.
‘Great!’ he said. ‘Lets phone him right away and then we can call back Yu Graphic’s.’
‘I’ll phone but you have to go out of the room,’ she said.
‘No way,’ he was outraged. ‘Why would I want to do that for?’
‘Come on, please,’ she pouted as well as batting her eyes. He sighed as he gave up. She pulled him up from her chair and pushed him gently out of her office closing the door behind him. She put the bag at the bottom of her draw and then got ready to call Edison. She had his private number to his office as she got it from Stephen’s phone book in his mobile without him knowing.
The phone rang four times till he answered. ‘Hello?’
‘Oh, hello,’ she greeted him uneasily. ‘Um… it’s me Charlene…’
‘I know,’ he chuckled. ‘What can I do for you?’
‘Um… happy birthday,’ she blurted out. It was not what she wanted to say but her heart was saying otherwise.
‘Thank you… You’re the first to say that,’ he chuckled again when he heard her breathing heavily. ‘Is that all you wanted to say?’
‘No… I wanted to know if you’re free for lunch?’ that wasn’t what she wanted to ask. What was wrong with her? She thought. ‘If you’ve got plans then its okay,’ she rushed in not wanting to sound big deal.
‘No, no I’m free,’ he rapidly answered. ‘Is it something important?’
‘Well… I was wondering if… I basically need a Dot.com and I thought of you,’ she blurted out when she thought there was no need to keep it in till later. She didn’t want to talk business with him.
‘Oh,’ was all he said.
‘Is that okay?’ she held her breath waiting for his answer not noticing that the way he said ‘oh’ he was hurt.
‘Sure,’ he said few minutes later. She let her breath go.
‘Thanks! I’m so happy!’ she was beaming now. She will get to see him again. ‘I’ll see you at lunch. Will you pick me up?’ she asked remembering she had no transport.
‘Sure. Will one do?’
‘Yes!’ she said it to quick.
‘Okay. Where shall we go?’
‘I’ll sort that out. Just come and I’ll be waiting outside,’ with that she hung up. She was really excited.
She went to the door and opened it. In dropped Kenny who was no doubt eavesdropping. She put both hands on her hips and frowned down at Kenny. He jumped up smoothing his suit in place.
‘You are so like a girl!’ she stated laughing. She wasn’t frowning any longer.
‘What?’ he shrieked. They can hear Vaness chuckling. Kenny looked at Vaness and gave him a dirty look. He stopped and pretended to go back to his work.
‘Girls like to eavesdrop in a personal conversation and guys just like to ignore things like these. So that makes you a girl!’ Vaness was now roaring with laughter.
‘Shut up!’ he whined at Vaness.
‘Where’s my tea?’ she asked Vaness raising her eyebrow. He quickly went to the small kitchen. She turned to Kenny. ‘So… are you gay?’ she couldn’t help but say. She burst out laughing. Kenny huffed and went to sit at her chair. ‘I’m so sorry.’ He looked at her then went back to his work. She went up to him trying to apologize.
The morning went great for both of them as Kenny forgave her at the end, which didn’t take long. She ordered sandwiches, cakes and anything else that was good for lunch before one. With the basket on one hand and her gift in the other hand she went downstairs. She didn’t have to wait long as she saw his convertible pulling up beside her. She climbed in putting the basket behind. She was really excited.
‘Hi,’ she greeted him excitedly.
‘Hi,’ he didn’t seem like he was bothered. She felt a bit odd. He looked behind at the back seat. He raised his eyebrow questioningly.
‘We’re going picnic,’ she shrieked happily.
‘Okay,’ he muttered. ‘I know a place.’ He concentrated on his driving now. He put on the music load. She now knew that he didn’t want to be here. She kept quiet. Her excitement died. She was crazy in love with him but he didn’t want her love, which pained her.
He halted the car outside a small park. She followed him as they walked and stopped near a lake. She laid a sheet on the grass near a tree and sat down. She got all the foods out. They ate their sandwiches silently.
‘Why did you come if you didn’t want to?’ she blurted it out. She couldn’t take the silent.
‘What are you talking about?’ he questioned her ignoring hers.
‘All I wanted to do was spend your birthday together,’ she was in an act of crying. ‘Why did you come?’
He was stunned. ‘I’m really sorry,’ he apologized quietly. ‘I thought the only reason you came was because of some business you wanted to talk about.’
‘I thought we were friends?’
‘We are,’ he rushed. ‘I’m really sorry.’
She nodded forgiving him. Could she really be mad at him for long? She smiled. She got the bag from behind her and handed it him. ‘A present for you,’ she said excitedly. He looked in and his face smoothened. He got her gift out and held it up.
‘A diamond tie clip to go with your diamond earring,’ she explained.
He smiled. ‘Thank you,’ he said.
‘I heard you don’t wear ties. This might make you want you to wear it often now,’ she suggested. ‘Tell me. Why don’t you wear ties?’
‘Can you keep a secret?’ He leaned in. she nodded eagerly. ‘I can’t put it on,’ he whispered. She laughed in disbelief. He nodded his head that he was serious. She stopped laughing but she still was smiling and her eyes shone with laughter.
He wasn’t wearing a tie right now. He wore a white suit with black shirt. He got out a silver tie from his pocket. She took it from him and without saying anything put it on him. Her head was bowed not seeing Edison staring at her. She looked up when she finished and blushed.
‘Thank you,’ he whispered. ‘For the lovely and thoughtful gift.’
‘It’s nothing really. I couldn’t think of a better gift…’ he silenced her with a kiss. He pulled back to see her eyes closed and longing for more of his kisses. He kissed her again without pulling back this time.
Few minutes went by when Charlene finally pulled back. ‘Friends,’ she said more assuring herself. ‘We’re only friends. That means no kissing.’ Tears were flowing down her cheeks.
‘Don’t cry,’ he begged. ‘I’m really sorry.’
‘It pains me that we can’t be together,’ she sobbed out. ‘When you kiss me you lift my hope.’
‘I understand,’ he said. ‘I know the same feeling.’
‘Can we pretend we never kissed?’ she choked out. He nodded. She put on a smile. ‘Let’s eat.’ As they ate, they also chatted about the business along with the party.
She waved goodbye to Edison as he drove off leaving her outside the building. She was sad and happy at the same time. She sighed heavily. She turned and noticed Daisy there. She was furious.
‘Hi,’ she greeted Daisy.
‘Hi?’ Daisy spat. ‘What are you doing with Edison?’
‘Having lunch,’ she said in a mater-of-fact. She then walked passed her and into the building.
‘Don’t walk away from me!’ Daisy yelled. She stopped at her track not because she was scared but because she was getting angry. Everyone had stopped what he or she was doing and was looking at them with shock. They pitied Charlene, as they knew she wouldn’t last any more.
‘Yes?’ she hissed through her teeth.
‘Who do you think you are?’ she yelled.
‘Some kind of superstar,’ she muttered under her breath.
‘What did you say?’
‘I said I’m really sorry but I can’t chat. I have work to do,’ with that she quickly dashed for the elevator and rushed inside when it was closing. ‘Phew!’ she looked around to see Kenny frowning at her. His arms were folded and he didn’t look happy. ‘What?’
‘What?’ he repeated. ‘The ‘what’ is why are you getting in Daisy’s black book for?’
‘I ain’t.’ He sighed giving up, as he knew that this conversation wouldn’t go anywhere.
