It was the day Edison’s birthday party. She had already gave him a present but couldn’t go empty handed since people will be getting gifts and will think she got him nothing. She got him another present. It was a silver chain with the initial EC. She thought that it was cute that it could either mean Edison Chen or Edison and Charlene. The chain has real crystals and it would really stand out if he wore it. It was in a glass box and it looks very expensive, which it is.
She sat on Nicholas’s sofa. He was upstairs still getting ready as well as Gillian. They had already sorted Gillian problems. Nicholas had come down her apartment furious.

He barged into her apartment and paced the room cursing. He didn’t talk to her for five minutes he was here. Then he looked at her as if seeing her for the first time.
‘How could she not tell me?’ he shouted. ‘It’s been going on for two years! Those sick bastards!’
‘Calm down,’ she smoothly said.
‘Calm down?’ he spat. ‘She didn’t tell me but came straight to you!’
She sighed. She put a hand on his shoulder. ‘Listen, its difficult on her to say it to you because you’re her brother,’ her voice was calm and firm at the same time. ‘Plus you’re a guy,’ she added.
He shrugged her hand away still not reasonable. ‘I’ll kill those bastards!’ he angrily spat.
‘And killing solves everything?’ she asked. ‘There is evidence that these kids will go straight to jail so why make it difficult?’
He calmed down heaving a breath. He dropped on her couch, putting his head on his hands. ‘I just can’t believe it happened!’ he shook his head. ‘If only I paid more attention to her maybe it would never have happened!’
‘So you’re going to drown yourself with ‘what ifs’?’ She came and sat on the coffee table in front of him. ‘You still wouldn’t have known. These kids were very good at acting. I wouldn’t have known myself!’
He kept silence for few minutes. ‘Maybe you’re right,’ he broke the silent finally. He looked at her; she gave him a small smile. ‘I’ll go now. I’m sorry for ruining your evening.’ He got up. She got up with him.
‘It’s okay. Don’t give Gillian a bad time, okay?’
‘I wouldn’t do that. Why do you think I came to you?’ he gave her a smile. ‘I had to calm myself down.’
‘Thanks. I feel so much better now,’ she said, sarcastically.
She laughed. He joined in. Then out of unexpected he hugged her. ‘Thank you,’ he said over and over again. He finally let her go which felt like forever.

They had sort the problem out even thought Nicholas was furious at first but that was the same for her. She waited patiently for the two of them to come down, even though they had to wait for Stephen and Sam who were running late. She wore a glistening claret elegant dress. It was shaped perfectly with her figure. It was down to her knees with a bit of same coloured sheer material flowing down at one side. She had a sheer claret scarf with it, which hung, around her neck. Red wasn’t really her colour but she wanted to wear it tonight. She had just recently made it as a sample for her next month fashion.
‘Hey what do you think?’ Gillian came in showing her new dress. It was a green dress that was up to her ankle with a slit from her top thighs down. ‘As an expert fashion designer,’ she added.
‘Um…’ she pretended to think while looking her up and down Gillian. ‘I think you’ll be great for a nun.’ They both burst out laughing. ‘Nah, seriously it’s gorgeous.’
‘That’s coz it’s from My Studio!’
‘True!’ she cheekily replied. ‘What’s taking Nicholas long? I thought girls meant to be late?’
‘Oh, his coming,’ Gillian said. No sooner did he descend the stairs and was standing in front of them.
‘Lets go!’ he exclaimed happily.
‘What’s up with you?’ Charlene asked.
‘Nothing,’ was his happy reply.
‘He hasn’t seen Joey for couple of days,’ Gillian explained for Nicholas. ‘We’re going to pick her up when Stephen and Sam turn up. If they do turn up!’ she rolled her eyes mouthing typical men to Charlene.
As if in cue the doorbell rang. They went to the door knowing it will be no other than them. There stood Stephen, Sam and Shawn. Shawn was her date since she needed one desperately and couldn’t get any single guys because there were none! It was a friend date nothing serious. She should have warned Gillian whose jaws were hanging.
‘Look who we bumped into,’ Sam pointed to Shawn. ‘He says his your date,’ he was looking at Charlene as he said it. Gillian’s eyes were now wide and any minute it might pop out.
‘Nothing more,’ was all she explained to them. ‘Come, let’s get a move on.’
Stephen, Sam and Nicholas entered one limo while Charlene, Gillian and Shawn entered the other. Vicki and Rain were on the limo already as Sam and Stephen’s date. In the limo Gillian was uneasy Charlene could tell. She wanted to liven the atmosphere but couldn’t think of anything. Charlene had her present on her lap, so did Gillian. Shawn had got the latest aftershave for Edison, as he didn’t know what he could give he told her before when she had invited him. Gillian had got him a
‘When did you come back?’ she asked Shawn. It was the first thing that popped in her head.
‘Yesterday when I called you,’ he answered. Anyone can tell that he liked Gillian the way he kept giving side glances every chance he gets but he thinks he hides it well. Charlene seeing this she smiles. ‘Meaning to ask, did you get your tires fixed?’
‘Yeah, I’m so glad it hadn’t been scratched,’ she sighed of relief. ‘Doesn’t Gillian look pretty?’ she asked changing the subject. She saw the hesitation in his answer.
‘Yes she looks gorgeous,’ he said looking at Gillian. Gillian blushed.
‘Promise her a dance,’ she persisted.
‘Why?’ he, as if snapped back to reality, looked at her questioningly. ‘Why are you so keen?’
‘No reason,’ she shrugged her shoulder. She was glad that they had came to their destination because she didn’t want to be found out plus embarrass Gillian who couldn’t help but blush all the way.
They climbed out of the limo. The other limo hadn’t come as it was going to pick up Joey. Charlene linked arms with Shawn and Gillian and entered the big mansion. She was really nervous. She looked down at the present in hand that was wrapped with a wrapping paper. Will he like it? Was all she was thinking right now?
‘If you hold any tighter I don’t think I’ll be able to feel my arms,’ Shawn whispered in her ear.
She looked up to see him smiling. ‘I’m sorry.’
‘Don’t worry. He’ll love the present,’ he reassured her as if reading her mind. She smiled at him and mouthed thanks. They were now entering the ballroom where the party was held.
He didn’t know if she would turn up. The entire guest except for his closet friends didn’t come yet. He was really nervous seeing her. He was dressed in a blue suit with black shirt. He wondered what she would be wearing. It would be blue he guessed as she would always wear blue. He smiled at the thought.
‘Edison, honey!’ the high-pitched Daisy called out.
‘Oh great!’ he muttered. ‘Just what I wanted!’ He turned to face her forcing a smile on his face.
‘Why are you hiding here?’ she asked. He was ‘hiding’ on the balcony. He didn’t want to see anyone but Charlene especially not Daisy. After the party he had something important he needed to talk to her.
‘I’m not hiding,’ he quietly said. ‘Just taking a fresh air.’
‘The guests are waiting!’ she exclaimed. ‘It’s your party after all!’
‘I’ll be there. You go in.’ he told her. Taking a deep breath he followed her inside. He looked around. His eyes froze at the door. In entered Charlene linked arm with that same guy he hated and also linked arm with Gillian. He hoped that was Gillian’s date.
He saw them going to the corner were the present were put. He was surprised she got him another present. He wanted to know why she got him another one; he walked up to them as on the way greeting the guests politely. He stood in front of them as they turned around.
‘Hi,’ he greeted. He was more saying it to Charlene than the other two. Her eyes mesmerized him. ‘Is that another one for me?’ he asked
She looked at him confused. He pointing to the gift she put on the table. ‘Oh?’ Then, ‘Oh!’ He meant the second present as she already gave him one. ‘Right,’ she said, just a bit flustered. ‘I didn’t want to come empty handed…’ she explained.
‘And people are going to say that you got nothing?’ he offered. He saw the guilty look that was quickly covered with a smile.
‘Yes,’ she quietly said. She then looked up at the guy. ‘Have you two met?’ she was asking him but looking at the guy as well.
‘No,’ the guy looked at him. Who is this guy? Why did she have to look at him?
‘Well in that case let me introduce,’ she gave a nervous laugh. ‘Edison,’ she was now looking at him. ‘Meet Shawn Yu. Shawn this is Edison, my friend.’
They nodded mutely. ‘Would you like a drink?’ Shawn asked.
‘Sure,’ she said.
‘No alcohol, right?’ he said.
‘Right,’ he went taking Gillian with him.
They stood awkwardly. He then broke the silent. ‘You shouldn’t have got another present,’ he began.
‘I don’t know why. But I hope you accept it.’ He knew she was struggling with the explanation.
‘Its okay but I would have preferred that you didn’t get it.’ He then thought of changing the subject, as it wasn’t an interesting conversation. ‘You look beautiful tonight.’
‘Does that mean I didn’t look beautiful before?’ she teased. He didn’t hear the tease on her voice as he thought she was serious.
‘No,’ he quickly said it making some heads turns. ‘I didn’t mean that!’
He saw her mouth twitching. She then gave up and was laughing hard. This time many heads turned. He didn’t notice. He was too busy looking at her face. It lightened up as she laughed. She was absolutely beautiful.
‘Edison?’ Damn! He cursed under his breath. Why did she have to come now? He turned to Daisy. She looked furious he could tell and was trying really hard to hide it. Charlene had stopped laughing. She wasn’t even smiling. Her face went white.
‘Oh hello Daisy,’ he said. ‘Is my parents here, yet?’
‘Not yet,’ she replied through her teeth, her gaze never leaving Charlene’s.
He had to get Daisy away from Charlene. He didn’t want her to say anything bad to Charlene as he knew he will say something bad to Daisy and making her embarrassed at the same time. ‘Excuse us,’ he said to Charlene and grabbed Daisy’s hand dragging her away.
Charlene didn’t know what to feel. She didn’t know why she was feeling rejected as she knew they were engaged couple and nothing to do with her but she couldn’t help feel rejected and hurt. Shawn and Gillian joined her. As if sensing that she was hurt he wrapped an arm around her.
‘Hey, you’ll be alright,’ he squeezed her shoulder. She smiled at him.
‘Thank you,’ she quietly said as her voice was going to crack. ‘You know me too well even though we just met recently.’
‘I’ve been told loads of time,’ he just replied.
‘Hey,’ Nicholas called out as he and the others entered. They came and greeted each other. ‘How’s the party going?’
‘Okay,’ Gillian was the only one to answer as her and Shawn didn’t want to say anything.
‘Great,’ Sam said.
‘Where’s the birthday boy?’ Stephen asked as he wrapped an arm around Rain. Sam seeing this did the same with Vicki. They would always compete together.
‘Around…’ it was Charlene now to answer. She looked to see where he was. He was at the other end of the ballroom talking to some of his guest while a firm hand was at Daisy’s back. Daisy glanced her way and saw her staring. She gave her a smug look as if saying ‘Ha, his mine!’ Charlene quickly looked away. Shawn probably saw this as he squeezed her shoulder gently.
They all mingled with the guest. They didn’t like these posh parties. It was too boring for them and they weren’t going to say anything bad, as it was their friend’s birthday. Charlene wanted fresh air. She went outside to the garden. The garden looked beautiful with the lights glowing. It showed the greenery. She was fascinated when she saw the maze. She wanted to explore. Looking behind if anyone saw her, she made her way in.
Edison wondered were she was. She wasn’t in the ballroom as he saw his friends with the other guests. He could tell they were bored. Hell, he was bored. This wasn’t his kind of party and he new it wasn’t theirs as well. He saw Gillian with the Shawn guy but no trace of Charlene. He was tempted to go over to them and ask where she was but his pride got to him, as he wouldn’t ask for her from Shawn. He caught a glimpse of a red clothing figure disappear through the balcony. He made his way to the balcony. He saw her looking at the maze. She was actually going in the maze!
He also looked behind if anyone was watching him. When no one was, he descended the steps down and went in the maze after her but made sure she didn’t see him following her.
‘You can stop following me,’ he froze. She turned to face him in the middle of the maze. They had been walking through the maze for 5 minutes. She had a smile on her face. ‘This place is amazing!’ she exclaimed.
‘You love it?’
‘It’s the best I’ve seen so far tonight,’ she then clamped her mouth with her hands. She was shocked at what she blurted it out, he assumed.
‘Don’t worry,’ he assured her. ‘I was bored myself.’ He could here the music. ‘Would you like to dance?’
She nodded her head. They kept quiet as they danced in a slow rhythm. They could here the music. They could here the lyrics perfectly. He knew she was rigid now with the lyrics.
