Chapter Twenty-Eight ‘Breaking it off with her’

They were still kissing until they heard someone clearing their throat. He pulled back only to see the furious Daisy. He sighed. He looked at Charlene. Her jaws dropped but quickly recovered. He could tell that she felt really guilty and hurt at the same time.

‘Daisy,’ he whispered not meeting her eyes.

‘How could you?’ she said harshily.

‘It wasn’t meant to be like this!’ he began. He saw movement beside him. He saw Charlene leaving. He wanted to stop her but then he wanted to sort out this before he chases after her. He let her go before carrying on. ‘Daisy… I know that we were promised to get married,’ he saw her attention was now all on him and not glaring at the disappeared Charlene. ‘I don’t think I’ll be able to keep that promise I made to my parents. I’m really sorry but I don’t love you and neither can I marry you just to make my parents happy so I’m cancelling the wedding,’ when he finished he made his way back. He was really happy to be free. He couldn’t wait to tell Charlene.

Charlene couldn’t stay here any longer. She had to go. She had to leave this place before she burst out crying. She rushed back into the ballroom making her way to the entrance/exit. Shawn came in her way.

‘What’s wrong?’ he asked with concern. He frowned when he saw her in a verge of breaking down. ‘You okay?’

‘I have to go,’ she rushed the words out but it was quiet.

‘I’ll come with you,’ he said firmly as he knew she was going to argue. She couldn’t argue with him now. Not now when she had to get out of here. She let him guide her out of the ballroom and out of the mansion. She looked back of the limo window at the mansion. She let the tears flow down her cheek. She could taste it was salty. She knew Shawn felt uncomfortable; she looked at him and gave him an assuring smile. He was sitting in front of her fiddling with his fingers. He came and sat next to her and put an arm around her shoulder. Taking the opportunity she sobbed on his shoulder.

Edison ran in the ballroom not caring that many heads had turned towards him. He looked around the ballroom. He couldn’t see her anywhere. He ran his hands through his hair frustrated. Where was she? He thought. He saw Gillian and went over to her.

‘Have you seen Charlene?’ he asked calmly as he didn’t want to sound desperate.

She didn’t look pleased. ‘She went with Shawn home,’ she said, gloomily.

He was too late. He shouldn’t have let her go. He should have told her to wait. He was so frustrated that when one of his guests greeted him he shouted bloody murder to the guy. He said he was sorry then took off. He had to tell her.

When the limo halted Charlene pulled back. Her eyes were probably red and swollen. She laughed but there was no happiness in it. ‘Look what I’ve done to your suit,’ she pointed to his shoulder where there was large dampness.

‘It’s okay,’ he whispered.

‘Thank you for everything,’ she made a move to climb out of the limo.

‘Are you going to be okay?’ he asked with hesitation. ‘Do you want me to come up?’

She shook her head. ‘I’ll be fine. I have to be strong.’ Smiled then got out. She was really sad but she had to stay strong. She climbed the steps to the building.

‘Charlene,’ Shawn called out. She turned. ‘Can I come in? I don’t think you’re alright.’ She hesitated. ‘Don’t worry. I care for you that’s all.’

‘Sure…’ The limo went off anyways without him. She swiped her card and the door clicked open. She pulled it. In an act of going in she was stopped again.

‘Charlene,’ this time Edison called out her name. She turned to him. The cab he came with parked on the curb. He ran up to stand next to her. He saw Shawn and his face-hardened. ‘Can we talk?’ he asked her quietly ignoring Shawn.

‘What’s there to talk about?’ she asked, irritated that he would follow her after that. It was hard to let him go but it was harder to see him in front of her and stopping herself from running to him.

‘Please,’ he pleaded.

‘Guess I’ll go,’ Shawn knew when he was the third wheel.

‘Are you sure?’ she frowned. ‘You can come up,’ she offered.

‘No, thanks. I’m okay,’ then to Edison, ‘Can I take your cab?’

He nodded understanding his need to go. Shawn hugged Charlene awkwardly since Edison was staring. He didn’t seem pleased even though it was a friendly hug. He said bye and went in to the cab. Charlene went inside quietly with him in tow. Inside the apartment she flopped down on the sofa. Edison closed the door quietly and approaches to sit on the one seat couch.

‘Why did you leave?’ She closed her eyes. She knew he would say that.

She hesitated. She didn’t answer but threw him a question over his. ‘Why did you come?’

‘I wanted to talk to you about us…’

‘There are no us,’ she interrupted him. ‘We’re only friends. You’re engaged remember? Or did you forget…again?’

‘No,’ his said through his teeth. He bit his lips. ‘I never forgot that. The reason I came…’

She interrupted him again. She didn’t want him to break her heart even harder. ‘I don’t want to know. I know there can never be something between us. I’m trying to get over it.’

‘Don’t,’ he begged. She looked at him confused. He came and sat next to her taking hold of her hand. ‘Don’t get over me.’

She took her hand away. ‘Don’t be selfish,’ she spat. She was outraged at what his saying. She stood up but he pulled her back. She struggled in his grip on her.

He chuckled. ‘You got it wrong. Let me explain before it gets out of hand,’ he chuckled some more before continuing. ‘I called off the wedding.’ She froze. ‘I was going to break it off with her after the party but you know what happened,’ he shrugged his shoulder meaning it went out of hand. ‘When you ran off I told her I didn’t want to marry her.’

‘So what are you saying…?’ She knew what but wanted him to say it. She thought she was dreaming.

‘That I want you to give us a chance,’ he answered.

‘I don’t know…’ she was playing with him now. She saw the shocked look on his face and suppressed the smile that was twitching.

‘What do you mean?’ he exclaimed.

‘I don’t know if I could give us a chance,’ she said. She didn’t make any eye contact, as she knew she would let it show.

‘How could you do this?’ he was furious.

‘You can go back to Daisy now,’ she raised her voice to make it convincing.

‘No way!’ he yelled. ‘I don’t want her. I never wanted her! I only want you!’ Now she definitely couldn’t hold it any longer. She burst out laughing. He looked at her confused at first then was angry when he knew he was played. ‘That wasn’t funny! You scared me then!’

She looked at him. ‘You look so cute when you’re angry,’ she said between her laughter. She pinched his both cheeks. He pushed her hands way.

‘This is serious!’ he yelled at her.

‘It is,’ she was still laughing.

‘That’s it. I’m leaving,’ he turned to leave. She thought he was serious. Her laughter died. She ran to him and wrapped her arms from his back. He stopped at his track. She apologised to him over and over again. He touched her hands that were tightly locked on his stomach. ‘I’m glad that you came or I would have thought you didn’t want me.’

The tight grip loosened a little. He moved her hands apart then turned to face her. He traced her jaw line then kissed the side. She flinched. He kissed her cheeks. She moaned. He kissed the tip of her nose. She looked at him then grabbed him by his hair and pulled him down to kiss him passionately.

Gillian was bored stiff at the party with the runaway birthday boy gone. She was mad at herself forever thinking she will have Shawn. He liked Charlene she was sure of it. Charlene was pretty and she was rich but then again no one knew that. She was caring person. Any guys will fall in love with her. She didn’t blame Charlene. Never.

She looked at the guys. Since the birthday boy wasn’t here they were trashing the place. Sam was Djing hip-hop song that belonged to Edison, which the people did not approve of since it was 2pac with all the swearing. Stephen was eating food like a pig making people sick. Nicholas was dancing like a maniac that made people stop dancing and retrieve back to their tables. And their dates? They were helping the guys!

She sighed. This was going to be a long night. She was debating on leaving when she caught a glimpse of a guy coming in. She thought it was Shawn but then again her eyes probably were doing tricks on her. She looked closer at the guy. She wished she put on her contacts. She squinted her eyes. It didn’t make any difference, she still couldn’t see. People who were leaving one by one blocked him. Giving up she turned to the table with drinks and picked up one glass. She sipped slowly.

‘Gillian,’ she froze. Were her ears now playing tricks on her? She slowly turned to face Shawn.

‘Shawn,’ she said. ‘I thought you left with Charlene?’

‘I did,’ he plainly said. ‘I took her home and I will be taking you home as well.’

‘You didn’t need to come just to take me home. I’m old enough to take care of myself.’ She was hurt inside that he didn’t want to take her because he wanted to but because he was a gentleman.

‘Will you believe me if I said I wanted to come for you?’ he gave a wolfish grin.

‘No.’

‘Thought so,’ he made and an act to leave. Was he going to give up that easily? He then stopped. He looked into her eyes. ‘Then again, I could prove it.’

She was happy inside. She didn’t show it outside. ‘And how are you going to prove that?’ she said with a touch of flirtation.

‘People say I’m a charmer.’ He was flirting back!

‘That’s people not me!’ she couldn’t believe this. She was flirting! ‘You can charm anyone but what you should ask is…’ She went closer to his ear to whisper, ‘…can you charm me?’

She pulled back to look at his face. He looked at her, shocked. Then a smile crept on his kissable lips. If she didn’t watch it, she might kiss him.

‘Are you flirting with my sister?’ Nicholas voice rang behind.

‘Flirt with your sister?’ Shawn sounded shocked. ‘Now why would I do that? Right Gillian?’ he asked. She saw his eyes were bouncing with laughter.

‘Why would we be flirting?’ she said getting in the pretence with Shawn. ‘How could you think so low of me?’ She pretended to be hurt. She was trying hard to laugh out loud as she saw Nicholas feeling guilty.

‘I’m going to go now,’ Nicholas dryly said. When he disappeared through the crowds Shawn and she burst out laughing supporting each other. When she noticed which situation she was in she pulled back from his grip.

‘Um… I’m going to go now…’ she quietly said. She made her way through the crowd and out of the mansion.

‘Wei!’ Shawn called out from behind. He ran to her side. ‘Where are you going?’

‘Home,’ she plainly stated.

‘I thought I said that I’ll take you?’

‘You did,’ she said. ‘But I did say that I’m old enough to take care of myself.’

The limo came and parked on the curb. She climbed inside with Shawn following. She sat there quietly not looking at him.

‘You changed,’ he began. She looked at him shocked. Was he saying what she thinks his saying? ‘Last time I saw you were more of a… How do I say it?’ he was thinking.

‘A tart? Snob? Bitch?’ she offered.

‘That is too harsh,’ he said. ‘Let’s just say the opposite of what you are now.’

‘I thought you didn’t recognize me,’ she whispered.

‘I didn’t at first,’ he admitted.

‘When did you know?’

‘That night at Daniels’ place.’

‘Oh,’ she whispered. ‘So what do you think of the new me?’

‘I like the new you,’ he said. He smiled. ‘You look gorgeous now!’ She blushed. ‘You look beautiful when you blush.’ She was blushing furiously now. She looked away shyly. He sat closer to her. He lifted her chin and turned her face towards him. ‘You look sexy when you’re shy.’ He touched her lips with his. She froze. He pulled back quickly realizing what he just did. ‘I’m so sorry!’

She looked at him the thought what Charlene would do at this situation. She pulled his hair and kissed him fiercely but passionately.
