Chapter Thirty-One ‘Shawn’s angry’

Two weeks went by wonderfully for Charlene. There were some ups and downs with Daisy but Charlene never took it in the heart the rude comments. She was happily dating Edison. Nicholas was happy as well. He was always with Joey now. They were planning the wedding. Gillian was friends with Shawn, which was odd. She said that he only wanted to be friends right now. He had some family matters to sort out first before going into a relationship. Gillian was happy to wait for him. Everyone was happy except Daisy.

Gillian was really excited. She was going out on a date with Shawn. Well, it wasn’t a date. More like a friendly dinner together. But the ‘together’ got her excited. Shawn was her second best friend. Charlene was the first one. She didn’t have many friends. Lately after the court she had friends in college. Charlene had been there at the court along with Nicholas, Edison, Stephen, Sam and Shawn. They’ve all been there for her. Leon, Alice and MaiLin were doing 5 years in prison for sexual harassment. Not only to her but also many others.

She borrowed a blue tank top and a black short skirt from Charlene. She wore sandals. She didn’t look all dressed up nor did she look under dressed. Just perfect for her. She didn’t over do her make up. She rang up the taxi earlier. It was now parked outside the house. Nicholas was out on a date with Joey. She put the alarm on and left for the taxi. It took her to Daniels’ restaurant. She looked at the time. It was 7.50 pm. She was 10 minutes early.

The maitre d’ swept up to the entrance. ‘You have a booking?’

‘Tse,’ she stated flatly, trying not to reveal the pleasure in getting the booking. The place was usually booked weeks in advance but she pulled strings, more like asked Charlene. She knew the owner of the restaurant. ‘I’m waiting for a friend…’ her voice trailed off.

‘Yes,’ the maitre d’ crisply said. ‘Would you like to wait at the bar?’

‘Yes, thank you.’ The maitre d’ led her to the bar. She slipped on to the bar stool surveying the room. The maitre d’ left her side to the next arrival. It was a large bar, dimly lit, with low tables scattered around the room, most occupied.

‘What’s your poison?’ the bartender asked.

‘Claret, please.’ There were quite a few people milling about the room, nestled in deep chairs with small tables between them laden with nuts, nibbles and glasses.

She waited patiently for Shawn. She had an uneasy feeling but shrugged it back of her head.

There was a knock on the door. Charlene thought that was odd. It wouldn’t be Edison since he was going to his parents for the weekend. It’s a Friday night and everyone was out on dates unlike her. But she was okay with because she at least has a guy. Oh what if it’s Daisy? She couldn’t help but think the worse. What would I do? What would I say? I know it won’t be something nice.

As slow as she can she went to the door hoping when she gets there the visitor would think she’s not here and leave. She got to the door and waited a minute before swinging it open. Shawn stood in front of her. She frowned. Isn’t he meant to be with Gillian? She was sure Gillian said she was going to have dinner with Shawn. She borrowed her clothes and asked to book her a table at Daniels’.

‘Shawn, what a surprise!’ she smiled. She looked at him carefully. He didn’t seem well. First of all his head was bowed. Secondly his hair was a mess. And thirdly his Armani suit that he was wearing looked like someone ran over it. Her smile fell to another frown. ‘Are you okay?’ she asked worriedly.

He looked up for the first time. He was angry. He was drunk. Tipsy. He couldn’t stand up straight. He had to hold on to the doorframe. ‘I hate you,’ he harshly stated before falling onto her. She stood there immobile. What was wrong with him? Why would he say those horrible things? The thoughts flowed in her mind.

‘Shawn?’ she shook him gently. He was out cold. She was holding onto him before he falls on the floor. She struggled getting him inside to the couch. He lay there motionless. She sat on her coffee table and looked at him. She took in his features. He resembled someone but she couldn’t figure out whom. She wondered what happened and why he was drunk.

Gillian looked at her watch. It was 8.20 pm and he still hasn’t shown up but she never gave up. It was her 3rd glass of claret. She sipped it slowly. The bartender looked at her with pity. She didn’t want to be pitied. She wanted for Shawn to turn up.

Where is he? The voice in her head asked.

His probably caught in traffic, she shrugged the voice away.

His not coming, her inner voice argued with her.

Tears threatened to come. She forced them back in. She looked at her empty glass.

‘Another claret, please!’ she asked the bartender. He hesitated. ‘Now!’ she demanded. The bartender obeyed. He poured the drink. She drained it fast and stood up. She nearly fell if she didn’t grab onto the stool.

‘Are you okay, Miss?’ the bartender asked worriedly.

‘I’m fine,’ she snapped. She straightened herself up and walked swaying her hips through the crowd unsteadily. Well she tried to walk but kept losing her footing.

An hour went by and he still didn’t move. She shook him to see if he will get up. He started to stir a bit.

‘Shawn!’ she said out loud. ‘Can you here me?’

‘Wha… what?’ He mumbled. He opened his eyes still looking drowsy. ‘Mom?’

She gave a short laugh. ‘No. It’s me Charlene. The one you hate. Remember?’

He tried to get up but kept falling back down. ‘You…’ he began. He pointed at her. ‘What…are…you…doing…here?’ he had a difficulty of speaking. He seemed as if he was going to puke.

‘You are not going to vomit on my floor,’ she warned him. He kept on making faces and making a gagging noise. ‘No, no, no.’ She dashed for the bin and got it just in time as he vomited in it. She tried to keep a straight face. ‘Eew! Disgusting!’ She put the bin down with his head towed in; she massaged his back to ease him. ‘You…have…better…have…a…good…explanation…for…this!’ she paused in every word giving him a hard squeeze on his shoulder.

He stopped vomiting after a while. He looked at her with his drowsy eyes. ‘Do you even know who I am?’ he asked harshly.

‘Shawn?’ she joked.

‘I don’t even know why I’m here!’ he got up but fell back down. He was still drunk.

‘Because you think I’m a good friend?’ she gave him a small smile.

‘A friend? I am your brother!’ he roared.

‘Sure,’ she raised her hands in defense.

‘You don’t believe me?’ he said angrily.

‘Yes I believe a drunk man in my apartment.’

‘My mothers name is Chiara Choi Yu!’ he shouted.

Charlene froze. She then shook her head laughing. ‘What’s wrong with you?’

‘What’s wrong with me is that you won’t believe me!’

‘At your state?’ she asked.

‘I hate you!’ he fell on the floor.

‘We already established that you hate me!’ She watched him crawl towards the door. She followed him quietly behind. ‘So where are we going?’

He stopped and looked up. ‘I’m going home. I don’t know ‘bout you!’ he yelled. Then went back to crawl to the door.

‘Are you driving home?’ she asked.

‘Of course!’

‘At your condition? You can barely walk!’ she exclaimed and gave a short laugh.

‘I don’t care. I have no family!’

‘You said you were my brother just a second ago,’ she pointed out.

‘You don’t even believe me,’ he exclaimed.

‘I’ll be your sister if you want!’ she offered.

‘You don’t have to coz you already are!’ he yelled frustrated. She didn’t believe him obviously. He was drunk. He didn’t know what he was saying. ‘Can you open the door for me?’ he said as he got to the door. She went over and opened it. She held the door open for him. She looked down at him. He wasn’t moving.

‘Shawn? Shawn?’ she called out his name. She bent down; turning his face towards her she saw that he was out cold again. ‘Great! As if it wasn’t bad I dragged you to the couch the first time!’ she muttered.

She struggled to get him up. In doing that she fell down on top of him. He was way heavy for her.

She heard a gasp. ‘Gillian?’ she looked up to see a shocked Gillian. She then looked down back at Shawn. Gillian turned and ran clumsily. Charlene was too shocked to move.
