~Phone Call And In A Rush~

Chapter Thirty-Three ‘Phone Call And In A Rush’

The ray of lights coming through the window caused Shawn to wake up. He felt stiff. He focused on the surrounding. Where was he? This wasn’t his home. He sat up only to brush his legs with something soft. His head hurt. He couldn’t see the figure clearly with his head hurting. Damn! He shouldn’t have drunk too much. He couldn’t remember anything about last night only him drinking in a bar.

The figure he noticed moved. He rubbed his head then his eyes and focused on the figure. It was… Charlene! He must have said her name out loud as her head shot high to look at him. Omg! What was he doing here? What happened last night? Did he say anything that he shouldn’t have? He couldn’t remember. His head hurt.

‘What…am I doing…here?’ he asked quietly.

‘I should be asking you that,’ she joked.

He looked at her. If she was joking does that mean he never told her anything? Everything is okay?

‘I need to go…’ he started to get up but with the hangover he didn’t manage to even sit up let alone stands up. ‘Aaww’ he groaned.

‘Since we’re awake mind telling me everything?’ she said. He looked at her confused at what she was taking about. She held out a paper. It was a blur to him. He tried to focus his eyes on the paper. The only thing that was standing out was the word ‘birth certificate’. Automatically his hands went up to his jacket inner pocket. The paper was missing…

Memories of yesterday flashed back in his head making him dizzy. He remembered drowning himself with alcohol. He was angry with himself for being a coward. He couldn’t tell her the truth. The second he knew he had a sister he was over the moon. He searched for her and found her but the word of him being her sister would not come out. He was scared she will reject him and he didn’t want to get hurt. He always dreamed when he found out that they would be together as a family.

He remembered him hailing a cab but the address he gave wasn’t his it was Charlene. It was as if someone else had taken over his body and was speaking up. Someone he wished he was, a stronger man. But he wasn’t that someone, he was a coward.

He remembered shouting at her and telling the truth but she thought he was just talking rubbish.

He remembered…

He gulped. Slowly making his gaze up to hers. Her eyes were locked in his with questions. ‘I’m sorry,’ he whispered.

He forced himself up on his feet. She backed away not wanting to collide with him. She sat herself on the coffee table looking up at his back. He wouldn’t look at her. ‘Don’t go,’ she pleaded. ‘Not without telling me everything.’

‘What’s there to tell?’ he said, coldly. He was disappointed that she didn’t want him to stay because she found out that she had a brother.

‘Everything! I want to know. You are my brother…’ he swung around to look at her. His eyes were tearing up. ‘…And I want to get to know you better,’ she carried on when she knew that this was what he wanted to hear. Her eyes were tearing up as well.

‘Really?’ he asked not convinced.

‘Really,’ she motioned him to come and sit next to her. He practically jumped on her and gave her a big bear hug. She laughed but then it turned into tears. It wasn’t sad tears but happy. ‘I said before that it was the parents fault and not the child, remember?’ she whispered. He nodded not trusting his voice. ‘And it’s true its our parents fault not ours.’

Minutes went by till they eventually pulled away wiping the tears away. He was finally happy that he finally got his sister. This is what he dreamed for. Brother and sister together at last.

‘Just to make it clear words go around that I was crying … well … lets just say … it won’t end well,’ he threatened.

‘Yes, sir!’ she saluted him. They both broke down with laughter. ‘So tell me everything,’ she said when they settled down having breakfast.

‘Where shall I begin?’ he told himself.

‘From the beginning?’ she offered.

‘Okay,’ he fidgeted on his seat to get comfortable. He exhaled deeply. ‘Our mother was 16 when she married my father. They were in love and eloped because their parents won’t allow them to get married. My father was 22. He stopped his studies to take care of our mother. So he worked day and night earning money hard. Everything was going well for them. Money didn’t bother them, love did. Three years went by. Mother and father were going distant because of too much work he was doing. Mother had been working as well. Money that was coming in was saving up. One day my father thought of a great idea to use the money. He bought a company that had been bankrupted. My mother was furious with him for using the money with out telling her.’

‘Was she separated when she was with my father?’ Charlene interrupted him. She so badly wanted that to be the true. She didn’t want to know her mother as the bad person.

‘Let me get to that,’ he said, uneasily. She got her answer just looking into his eyes. ‘I’m sorry.’

‘No don’t be. Please carry on,’ she told him.

He hesitated but she just gave him a glare. ‘They made up in a week. The company went huge after two years. My father was a workaholic. He would come home late at night and go early in the morning. My mother felt neglected. She wanted to go away for a while. So, she thought if she studies as a lawyer, it was always her dream; she can do something rather than stay at home and wait for him. She did find a university but it was in England. My father wasn’t pleased but he wanted her to be happy so he agreed. He bought the flight ticket and a house over there for her…’ he was interrupted by the phone ringing. He looked at the phone that was next to the couch then at her, raising an eyebrow.

‘Ignore it,’ she said, irritated by the interruption. ‘It will go to voice mail,’ she said when he didn’t continue.

‘She was okay there in the beginning…’

‘Hiya this is Charlene Choi. Sorry I can’t get to the phone…’

‘Everything was going great. She made friends. She was doing great in her studies…’

‘Please leave a name and number and I’ll sure get back to you…’

‘It was until she met your father…’

‘Beeeeep. Hello, Charlene?’ His voice was breathless and with fear. ‘It’s me Chase. Please pick up the phone it’s important. Your fathers in the hospital… He had a heart attack.’

Horridly Charlene made it to the phone and yanked the receiver to her ear. ‘Chase?’ she said.

‘Charlene? Omg! I’m so glad that you’re there.’

‘When did this happen?’ She asked wanting to get to the point. Her voice was shaky. She was shaking. Please, God, don’t let anything happen to him, she prayed silently.

‘Five minutes ago,’ he rushed on. ‘When can you come?’

‘As soon as possible. I’ll be there. Please don’t let him die,’ she begged as tears formed in her eyes. ‘I’m coming.’

‘I’ll see you then.’

They hung up saying goodbye. Tear streaked eyes she turned to Shawn. ‘I… My… I… have to… go…’ she couldn’t say it. Her voice was cracking. He rushed over to her side.

‘It’s okay,’ he said softly, embracing in a hug. ‘Go. Take my plane if you have to.’

‘Can… come … with me?’ she asked, quietly.

‘Are you sure?’ he looked down at her. She nodded. ‘Fine.’

One hour and half later she and Shawn were on his private jet. She made two calls before boarding the plane, one to Kenny to tell him that she’s flying to England to her father and the other to Edison. He wanted to come too and be there for her but she refused his offer telling him that she is also going there to sort out some family business and she didn’t want him to feel left out. He was okay after five minutes of persuading.

Hours later they were making their way to the ward her father was in. She was scared. She didn’t want to lose her father. She kept praying that he would get through this. She felt someone grab on to her hand. She looked up at Shawn. He gave her its-going-to-be-okay smile. She nodded and gave him a faint smile to assure him. He squeezed her hand before entering the private room.

‘Charlene!’ all her uncles exclaimed. They all came up to her giving her a hug. Her aunts hugged her as well. Cecilia was sitting on her chair next to the bed. Charlene let go of Shawn’s hand and walked slowly to the bed, her eyes glued to the unconscious figure lying on the bed. Tears were again swelling on her eyes. This weekend would be teary for her, she assumed.

‘Father,’ she whispered. She took hold of his hand while Cecilia was holding the other one. ‘Father, please wake up.’

Cecilia looked up at Charlene. She hadn’t noticed that she had come in. she was furious on why she bothered to come. ‘What are you doing here?’ she yelled making everyone in the room jump.
