Charlene took her gaze to Cecilia and held it there. ‘What do you think I’m doing here? I’m here to see my father.’
‘Get lost!’ Cecilia roared.
Charlene could not believe her ears. Cecilia was deifying her to see her father who just had a heart attack. ‘Listen here,’ she began trying to calm her nerves at the same time. ‘Just because you kicked me out of the house 8 years ago doesn’t mean it will work this time.’
Gasps could be heard around the room. ‘What?’ Calvin was the first to speak.
‘How could you do that?’ Carl yelled at Cecilia.
‘And all this time we thought it was our fault!’ Calvin roared.
‘I knew something was up but I never knew it was that!’ Chase shouted.
Her aunts were trying to control them. They were really angry right now. Shawn stood there not knowing what to do. Cecilia looked shocked at them cursing her. Doctors and nurses rushed in the room to see the commotion going on. The room fell silent with only angry heavy breathing from her uncles. All eyes were on Cecilia. Angry glares were coming from her uncles.
‘All I ever wanted,’ Charlene began. ‘Was want you to treat me like a family, like your own daughter. Was that so much to ask?’ Cecilia looked at her gob smacked. ‘It must have been because you couldn’t stand me,’ she continued for Cecilia. ‘I never had a birthday party with my family. I never was allowed to come home for the holiday. I was sent to boarding school away from my family. Only time I was allowed back home was on Christmas. But what’s the point? I feel left out because I’m never there. So tell me did you enjoy making my life a misery?’
It was dead silent now. Her uncles had calmed down. Everyone was looked at Charlene with sympathy. Cecilia didn’t know what to say. Her jaws were ten feet under her. She couldn’t believe her ears. Realizing that she clamped her mouth shut.
‘I was… jealous,’ Cecilia managed to choke out.
‘What?’ Charlene squeaked.
‘I was jealous of you,’ she replied. ‘Your father loved you more than me. He loved your mother more than me. You are spitting image of your mother.’
Hearing this made Charlene face soften. She didn’t know what to say to that. She didn’t expect this. ‘I didn’t know,’ Charlene whispered.
‘What was more worse was that I couldn’t conceive. I can’t have children. Do you know how I feel? Your father wants children and I can’t give him. I hated that he had a daughter from before. I didn’t want him to leave me.’
Cecilia wiped the tears that were running down her cheek. She thought she said enough. She ran out of the room. The doctors said that they had to keep it quiet and left not wanting to get involved dragging the nosy nurses along.
‘I’m going to go after her,’ Charlene said making up her mind. She had to sort this out before her father wakes up. Everything will go hay wild. She left her bewildered uncles and aunts. Shawn nodded that he understood. With that she ran after her stepmother.
She found Cecilia down at the small garden that was back of the hospital. She was crying behind a big oak tree. Slowly Charlene made her way to her. She didn’t know what she was going to say, all she knew was that she has to be here and sort this out. She stood in front of Cecilia towering over her she frowned. She had never thought she would be in this situation.
If someone told her eight years ago that she will be comforting her stepmother she would have laughed. But the situation is different. Now she had got her loathing of her stepmother off her chest. Now Cecilia had just told her why she had been treating her bad. Now things seemed promising for both of them. If only they got it out sooner. There wouldn’t have been any tears, any pain and any guilt.
‘Cecilia?’ she called out softly, barely coming out as a whisper. Her voice still sounded like there was a lump there because of all the crying.
Cecilia looked up slowly, her eyes swollen red. ‘What do you want?’ she asked coldly. Charlene wanted to laugh. Now she knew that Cecilia didn’t mean to be cold towards her. She tried to so long that it was natural to her to talk to her like that.
‘Truce?’ Charlene offered with a shrug.
‘Truce?’ Cecilia repeated in shock. ‘What do you mean?’ She didn’t sound convinced, she assumed. Since she was eyeing her as if she will come out and say ‘yeah right after you treated me bad before’.
‘Yes, truce. I think we should start over. We didn’t hit it off at first but theirs always a second chance right?’ Charlene waited for her reply. Cecilia nodded. ‘After all if you don’t risk it then what’s the point on living if you going to have the perfect life.’ She knew she was babbling but she couldn’t help it. She was nervous. ‘Perfect life will be boring and not worth it.’
Cecilia laughed. Charlene was taken aback. She had never seen her smile let alone laugh. She smiled. ‘If I knew you were like this before then I would have befriended you long ago.’
‘Really?’ Charlene asked, surprised.
‘Really. I wish I could turn back the time and change what I did the second I entered the Reeves family’s life.’
‘If there was such thing I would have changed many things,’ Charlene blurted out, her mind in men and personal things. Cecilia laughed again. She joined in too. She sat down next to Cecilia. ‘So what now?’
‘I need to apologize to the man we both love,’ Cecilia sighed, knowing that it won’t be easy. ‘I don’t know if he will forgive me.’
‘He will,’ Charlene said, certainly. ‘One thing my dad is good at is forgiving his love ones.’ This made Cecilia smile. ‘You are great to my father even though… you know,’ Charlene shrugged her shoulder. ‘And I’m thankful for that.’
‘I’m sorry for everything I done to you and will make it up to for all the years I will live.’ She looked really guilty. ‘That day when you came back from America after Uni I want to say that…’ she felt it hard to speak about it.
‘If you don’t want to say it then you don’t have to because I forgive you.’
‘No! I have to say this. Before you came I went to the clinic to see the doctor to talk about why I cant conceive. The doctor said that I had egg problem. My eggs died before I could conceive. I was so depressed on how to tell your father. I feared that he would divorce me. When you came, you came in the wrong time. I wanted to cry but I was angry at the same time. Chiara was really pretty. Everyone fell in love with her when she transferred, including your father. We went to the same Uni. We were friends. I loved Clive long before Chiara came in the picture. When I finally had the guts to tell Clive he told me that he had fallen in love with Chiara. I was so devastated I nearly killed myself.’
Charlene gasped. ‘I’m so sorry,’ she couldn’t apologize in behalf of her mother.
‘But your father came and saved me,’ she continued. ‘He thought I wanted to kill myself for someone else. He had no idea it was for him. From then onwards he protected me and kept an eye on me but that didn’t stop him from seeing Chiara. Months went by and I couldn’t hold it in. I was dying inside with agony. I had to tell him. I called him to meet me up. Just when I was going to tell him Chiara came crying saying that she’s pregnant with his baby and didn’t know what to do. I felt so gloomed watching my life shatter. I thought we were fated not to be together. I left to New Zealand. Didn’t come back till you were 1 years old. I thought I moved on. But I realized I didn’t just looking at him.’
‘My mother was gone by then, right?’ Charlene whispered. She was so engrossed with the story. Even though it was real life it sounded like a movie she was watching. She was imagining Cecilia’s past and pain.
‘She was gone straight after giving birth to you,’ she said sadly. ‘When I came back your father wanted to become friends again. I didn’t mind. I was okay as long as we didn’t spend too much time together. Once a week was what I was intended to see him. But that father of yours is one stubborn and demanding man. He wouldn’t let one-day slip without seeing me. He made so many excuses up and you know what the excuse was?’
Charlene shook her head.
‘You!’
‘Me?’ Charlene said in disbelief.
‘Yes you. I don’t think you remembered but I was your nanny. That’s what I was my job in New Zealand. That was my dream. To become a nanny.’
‘But you were studying business with my father,’ Charlene said.
‘It was foolish of me. I wanted to be close to your father and that was the only way.’
‘That was so sweet,’ Charlene hugged Cecilia.
Pulling back Cecilia continued knowing that she should have said this sooner because Charlene was a great girl and would have been her perfect daughter. She wiped a tear from her cheek. ‘While I was staying he would try find ways to take me out. He would pretend that it was just for the sake of you but he was actually taking it like a date.’
‘My father was so sweet. This all sounds so romantic novel your reading out!’ Charlene exclaimed excitedly.
‘Yeah he was sweet. We finally got through. We dated. He proposed to me two months later. I was so happy I said yes. Everything went great. I loved Clive and he loved me. It was perfect. Then I overheard Clive speaking to someone over the phone that you did resemblance Chiara. I knew what he was going on about. What got me sadder was that he said he could never forget his daughters’ mother. She was his first love.’
‘Did you confront him?’
‘No. I was six months pregnant then. I was so depressed that I had a miscarriage. From then on your father and me were lost. He tried to comfort me but I wouldn’t allow that. We did try many times to have a baby but I couldn’t conceive no more.’ She cried silently. Charlene felt so bad that she was crying too. ‘I am so sorry that I treated you bad for my mistake. I hated your mother and took it on you. I don’t know what to do or say for you to forgive me. I’ll do anything you want. Even leave your family.’
‘Don’t be silly! You love my father too much to leave his side especially now! But you could start repaying me by saying that ‘I’m the best daughter you ever had’ because no one ever said that to me and I’ve been longing to hear those words,’ Charlene gave her best smile.
‘I will not let you wait any longer then. Charlene Choi Reeves, you are the best daughter in the whole wide world!’ exclaimed Cecilia proudly.
‘Charlene?’ Shawn called out from behind them. They turned their head to him.
‘Hiya Shawn!’ Charlene cherry said. She saw him feeling uneasy.
‘Your fathers’ awake,’ he paused to see if he got their full attention, ‘…and his not… happy…’ he looked from Charlene and Cecilia. They both knew what he was getting at. This was going to be really bad now. Her father knew about it.
