They rushed to the ward. Clive wasn’t lying down. He sat up leaning on the pillows that was stacked up. The expression on his face gave shivers down her spine. It was the first time she ever saw him this angry. Tension ran through the room. The doctor and nurses were checking on him. As she stepped inside she knew that she was going to find the truth to her fathers side.
‘Father?’ Charlene choked out.
Clive moved his eyes to his daughter, who looked like she was frozen to the spot. She looked so beautiful just like her mother, his first love. He moved his gaze to the guy next to her, Shawn Yu, the guy who was Chiara’s son and her husband’s. Just thinking about that pain jolted down his lung. Pain was replaced with anger when he looked at his wife.
‘Mr. Reeves, you are healthy now,’ the doctor said. Then looked at everyone and said, ‘I’m sorry to say this but only two at a time can see him. He needs his rest.’
‘The hell I do!’ Clive shouted angrily. ‘I have rested enough!’
The doctor didn’t flinch. He guessed that the doctor was used to this by other patients. ‘Even though the rules are two visitors at a time,’ with that the doctor went out of the ward.
‘Can me and Shawn stay first?’ Charlene asked nervously. Her uncles and aunts nodded and walked out of the room quietly. Cecilia who had been staring at him with guilt written all over her face realized that they were waiting for her to leave. She sighed. She gave him an I’m-so-sorry look and left.
Charlene waited couple of minutes to collect her thoughts. She grabbed hold of Shawn’s hand and guided him to next to the bed. He felt sadden that Charlene had already accepted him in the family and he couldn’t do that two years ago when he found out that he had a sister and wanted to be part of her life. He had practically iced him out of the house for even thinking of it.
‘Father?’ Charlene cut in his thought. ‘The reason Shawn is here with me is because I have just found out that he is…’ she waited for him to say something.
‘…Your half brother,’ he finished the sentence quietly.
‘You knew?’
‘Yes. He came to me two years ago when he found out that he even had a sister. He wanted to be part of your life. I didn’t want that because he was the son of Chiara not mine.’
‘But he is my brother!’
‘I’m sorry but if I wasn’t something big in your life – thanks to Cecilia,’ he said Cecilia’s name nastily. ‘I didn’t want him to be.’
Charlene sighed. ‘But this is different!’ she paused for a while trying to find the right words. ‘He is my brother and I have the right to know that no matter the family problem we have!’
‘We wouldn’t have a family problem if I hadn’t fallen in love with that wife of mine and married her. We would have been happy if I stayed single.’ They could have been happy if he didn’t make a mistake. He made a mistake falling in love with Chiara. And now he made another mistake falling for Cecilia. She had ruined his relationship with his daughter. He had thought it was his fault that they had fallen apart.
‘Father, its nobody’s fault. Its just a misunderstanding!’ Charlene exclaimed. Clive gasped as he just realized that Charlene had already forgiven Cecilia. How could she after all she had done to her? She had been shouting at Cecilia just ten minutes ago while he was lying there! He couldn’t believe that his daughter was a kind-hearted person who is willing to give a second chance.
‘Well the sooner I get out of here I will file for a divorce!’ he declared.
‘No father, you love her and she loves you,’ Charlene desperately rushed to his side and grabbed hold of his hand. ‘We sorted it out. Please don’t make a mistake of divorcing her. Give her another chance.’
‘No!’ he roared taking his hand away from her grip. ‘She doesn’t deserve it!’
Charlene was angry that her father was this stubborn. Charlene stopped before she said anything she will regret. She inhaled deeply calming herself down. She then thought of something that might work to break his stubbornness.
‘She doesn’t deserve a second chance?’ she mocked. ‘I hate to say it but your wrong. You are the one who doesn’t deserve a second chance.’ She knew this caught his full attention. He was surprised and shocked at the same time. She continued before she wouldn’t have the chance. ‘Did you tell her everyday that you wake and before you go to sleep that you love her? Did you show her your love? Did you show you cared for her? Well did you?’ She sighed inwardly when she looked at her fathers’ impression. She knew she hit a spot in his stubborn heart and mind.
‘I don’t have to tell her I love her! She should know that!’ he defended himself.
‘We’re women! We need to be told!’
‘How was I to know that!’ he said outraged at the whole thing.
‘Erm… Charlene?’ Both father and daughter looked at the nervous Shawn. They had both forgotten that he was in the room. He was so quiet that it didn’t seem like he was in at all.
‘Shawn…’ Charlene felt embarrassed that she was having an argument in front of someone. She wasn’t the type to make a scene or want to be the center of attention. She was the type to stay behind and let life go as it is.
‘Shall I leave you two…?’ he backed up a little towards the door. She quickly went over to him before he left.
‘Don’t be silly! We still have to listen to his side of the story,’ she said pulling him back to the bed. He let her pull him. She knew he wanted some answers as well. They both looked at her father. He looked uncomfortable all of a sudden. He fidgeted with his fingers.
‘Urm… What do you want to know?’ he choked out dryly.
‘First you can explain why you lied that my - our mother was dead,’ she looked at her father. She didn’t think of it at all in the beginning. It didn’t register until now. He said that Chiara died in a car accident. ‘Why?’
He sighed. ‘We agreed that you would stay here with me and she will go back because her husband won’t like the idea of another mans baby. I didn’t want her to take you. So we signed off legally that she could never keep in touch with you. She didn’t want you to know that she existed and I was happy with that agreement.’
‘Why?’ she asked. Then added, ‘Why didn’t she want me to know? Didn’t she want me? Didn’t she love me?’ This is what she feared the most, her mother not loving her. She didn’t want to know if her mother did not love her. She only wanted to remember her mother as a beautiful, nice and caring mother as her father had always told her in bedtime stories.
‘She did love you,’ her father rushed the words out. ‘She did want you but it could never work out. She couldn’t take you to her family,’ he paused before adding, ‘and I would never allow her to take you away. I’m really sorry.’
She knew she couldn’t blame her father. He was doing what he thought was best. He wanted to keep me safe from her husband’s mother who wouldn’t accept me in the family. She was thankful for that. Her father was the greatest to her. Even if her mother took her with her she would have come back looking for him if she found out about him. She would have stayed with her father as well if it comes to that. And that’s why she forgives her father and is thankful that he kept her.
‘I love you,’ she said sitting next to him on the bed. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder. ‘And I’m glad you kept me. You are the best father a girl could ever ask for!’ she praised him proudly.
He kissed her forehead. ‘And you are the best daughter a father could ask for,’ he whispered. ‘I love you too.’
She looked up at Shawn. Again she forgot he was standing there. ‘Would you have wanted me to be your older sister then?’ she asked him.
‘Of course!’ he didn’t have to think twice she guessed. ‘When I found out I had a sister it was like I was flying to the moon.’
‘Aww, that’s so sweet. Knowing that I wanted to stay here and not with our mother, it doesn’t change that does it?’ she couldn’t help but feel curious.
‘No! Don’t be silly!’ he said, outraged at the idea.
‘Oi! I am only allowed to say that!’ she pouted.
‘I’m sorry to say this but that is what I always say,’ he pulled out his tongue, teasing her. He was grinning widely with her.
‘You guys already acting like brother and sister,’ her father pointed out.
‘What can we say? We’re a natural!’ she said. She was fanning her face with her hand in a posh way. They all laughed. ‘So, back to the conversation, did you love my – our mother. Gosh I have to get used to that! Anyways, would you have let her stay?’
He hesitated before answering, ‘No,’ then he thought he had to carry on, ‘I was blinded by her beauty that I didn’t see Cecilia. It was when Cecilia left then I realized that she was the one I loved not Chiara, not that way anyways.’
‘Now you have her! Don’t let her go!’ she couldn’t help but point it out.
‘I don’t know…’ he sighed.
‘If Charlene can forgive her then couldn’t you?’ Shawn asked. It was the first time he joined in with the conversation.
‘It’s not that easy. She nearly ruined our relationship completely. These years went by and I only saw my daughter probably once a year!’
‘Well at least you got to see her. My mother longed to see her but could not break a promise she made with you.’
‘Really?’ Charlene was teary again. ‘She wanted to see me?’
‘Yes. With your fathers promise and my fathers’ threats she couldn’t see you. My father changed from a nice, kind guy to an angry man. He mistreated my mother when she came back from England.’
‘That bastard!’ her father shouted. They both stared at him. ‘Even though this happened we parted as good friends. He shouldn’t have been angry with her and still be with her. If he had a problem then he should have divorced her.’
‘He didn’t want to,’ Shawn said sadly. He felt a little respect towards her father. ‘He didn’t want to get embarrassed so he stayed on married and made her life a miserable. When he found out that she was having an affair he quickly rushed here but coming here he also found out that she had already Charlene. My mother regretted going back with my father but she knew it too late. She thought she still loved him and that he still loved her enough to forgive her. But he was only acting until they went back to Hong Kong.’
‘I thought he forgave her as well!’ her father exclaimed.
‘I feel so bad for her,’ she whispered. She was upset hearing this, knowing her mother didn’t have a nice life.
