Chapter Forty ‘Ransacked’
‘My apartment!’ Charlene shrieked. She jumped up and down screaming.
Edison who looked around her apartment was mortified. Who would do this? Was running through his mind.
Edison went and tried calming Charlene who wasn’t easy. ‘Calm down,’ he said loudly over her screaming. He pulled her into his arm and hugged her tightly even though he was risking getting deaf. She quieted down after couple of minutes.
The apartment was tipped upside down. Everything was everywhere. Somebody had broken in. ‘Char, I think you should stay outside while I check if anyone’s in here and then call the police.’ He tried to push her out the door but she wouldn’t move. She screamed again deafening him all over again. ‘Damn, Char! Stop screaming!’
She stopped. ‘I know martial arts so why should I go for? If anyone is in here they had just come for their funeral.’ She declared loudly wanting that ‘anyone’ to know that they have messed around in the wrong territory.
Edison didn’t want to anger her no longer, let her stay. He walked around the apartment. He walked in her room which was untouched. The en-suit bathroom was untouched. Every other room was untouched except the lounge/dining room. The open kitchen was untouched as well.
‘Well guess no ones here and that your lucky only this room was messed,’ he said when he came back by her side. She hadn’t moved from where he left her standing.
‘Who ever this son of a bitch is he or she is so dead for making my life a misery,’ she said. He had just hanged up the phone.
‘The police are on the way,’ he said ignoring her threats. ‘We’re not aloud to touch anything but we can make a list in what is missing.’
‘Nothing’s missing,’ she replied.
He looked confused. ‘What do you mean? We haven’t looked around yet.’
‘This same thing happened in my office last week. It all started when that day remember that you came to apologize?’
‘How can I forget that day?’ he whispered.
‘Well when Shawn and I came back from the beach someone slashed my tires. Then the next week someone messed my designs that I had done! Then someone messed up my photos that were going to go on the magazines! And then someone – ’
‘Okay I get it!’ Edison who guessed that this would go on all night cut her off. ‘What I want to know is that why didn’t you go to the police and oh yeah another thing why didn’t you tell me?’
‘I don’t know? I thought it was going to stop,’ she shrugged her shoulders.
He grabbed hold of her and looked into her eyes all worried, ‘Char, if anything of this happen you must tell me! Okay?’ she nodded. ‘I don’t care if it’s a small thing I want to know!’
‘I’m sorry,’ she whispered. She hugged him feeling safe in his arms.
After few hours with the police asking question and their procedure they left. They promised that they would look into her case with the tires slashing and all. Edison made sure that they were taking this seriously. It was really late now. Edison was worried about Charlene. He didn’t want to leave her all alone.
‘I’ll be okay,’ Charlene said for the hundredth time. ‘Might I remind you again I know martial arts?’
‘I know,’ he groaned. ‘I’m more worried what you going to do with the guy.’
Even though the situation was ghastly he knew how to brighten it up. She smiled at him forgetting the incident at his mansion. She didn’t want to think about that, knowing she will remember it tomorrow and probably avoid him she didn’t care right now. Right now she loved this moment. This is why she loved him.
‘Are you okay, Char?’ he waved his hands in front of her.
Snapping out she said, ‘yes.’ After another five minutes persuading him to leave and not worry, he left. She didn’t want to clear the mess. She was too tired to so she just went straight to bed. When her head fell on the pillow she was in dreamland in no time.
Edison went home still wondering who it was. He didn’t know who would do something like that. He didn’t want to leave Charlene all alone martial art or not. He called up an old friend of his.
‘Hey, my man,’ he shouted over the phone.
‘Aaahhh! Who is this calling me at 3 in the morning!’ the angry voice shouted back.
‘Soz mate, it’s me Edison. Don’t say you forgotten me, Eason,’ Edison chuckled.
‘Man, you better have a good reason calling me at this time!’ Eason threatened.
‘It’s good, man. I need a favor, though.’
‘What is it? You know I’ll do anything for you – that is legal – because I owe you too much.’ He then carried on wanting to tell him what he had done for him. ‘You helped me build my life from nothing. I would have been on the street begging. I am – ’
‘Eason!’ he shouted over the phone. ‘Stop! I didn’t call you for you to thank me! I want you to help me.’
‘Soz, what is it?’
‘My gals place had just been ransacked – ’
‘I’ll get the guy – ’
‘Stop interrupting!’ Edison said, frustrated. ‘This wasn’t the first time. It’s been happening from some time now. I want you to make sure no body is going to hurt her.’
‘When do you want me to start?’ once again Eason interrupted him.
‘Anytime you want.’ He sighed.
‘Half six in the mornin’?’ Eason offered.
‘Sure. Just make sure nothing happens to her.’ He finished the conversation after giving enough information of Charlene and her address both to her place and My Studio.
He sighed again when he entered his library. He sat on one of the chair that surrounded the big coffee table. His untouched apple juice was still there and Charlene’s empty glass. He picked up the two glasses and was going to put it away when his glass tipped over on his shirt.
‘Damn!’ he cursed. The juice spilled on his hands as well. He strode out of the library and into the toilet. He was going to wash his hands when he found it odd that it smelt different. What the-? It smelt liquor. He licked his hand with the tip of his tongue. It is liquor!
He then remembered this morning when Daisy had come in.
******************************Flash back*********************************
He admired the work him and Vic had just done. Vic left few minutes ago. She would love this, he thought. He couldn’t wait to see her face when he showed it to her. She will be awe struck.
The doorbell rang jerking him back to reality. He steered his gaze away from the blown up photos and walked out of the room and into the hallway. He got to the door and swung it open. There stood on his front porch Daisy. He glanced at the outfit she was wearing and felt disgusted. She was wearing a red leather tight tube that looked like it was going suffocate her and the shortest matching mini skirt. The skirt even had splits at both side.
‘Uh… Was I expecting you?’ he dumbly asked. He scratched his head thinking.
‘No, honey,’ she laughed and stepped forward to kiss him but he stepped back in time. She hid her disappointment. ‘Well aren’t you going to invite me in?’
No! His inner self screamed. Before he could say it out loud she stepped forward again making him step back. She walked in taking the advantage. He groaned inwards not able to say anything about it. He didn’t want Daisy taking it out on Charlene when he’d be nasty to her.
‘Come on,’ he sarcastically said and inwardly added, why don’t you? He just hoped she wouldn’t annoy him that much.
He took her to the library and left to get the drinks. She asked for apple juice. He didn’t think it was a good idea to let her in. he had the feeling that she came to get a last chance before Charlene comes. He was alerted that she might spike his drink again. She probably thought he didn’t know anything of yesterday. He came back with a jug and glasses on a tray.
‘So what brings you here?’ he asked, pouring the juice in the long glass. He then handed it to her.
‘Just to see my ex–fiancé,’ she replied taking the glass off him. She purposely brushed her hand with his seductively. He jerked his hand back and tried not to show how disgusted he felt. ‘Plus to take my purse,’ she added.
He stopped pouring his juice and looked up at her confused. ‘What purse?’
‘The one I left on your birthday party,’ she explained. ‘It’s in the pink-room. It’s a red purse.’
He put his glass down. He stared at her for a couple of minute wondering if she was playing with him. When there was no flicker to give way he left her alone in his library and headed for the guest room. He came back to see her unmoved. Well that’s what he thought but he felt suspicious of her. He handed over the purse and sat back at his chair.
He didn’t touch his drink not trusting it. When she realized that he wouldn’t drink she excused herself and left. He sighed a relief and smelt his drink. There was liquor no doubt about it. He took his drink and hers and went to wash it leaving the jug behind.
***************************End of Flash Back******************************
He didn’t take the jug! And Charlene had it. He didn’t think that Daisy would actually put it in the jug as well. He should have guessed that before.
‘It’s my fault,’ he said out loud. ‘Now she will take her time to get over the incident.’
He cursed himself and went to get the jug.
