Chapter Forty-Two ‘Charity For The…’

Charlene was having lunch at Daniels’ with Nicholas and Joey that Friday afternoon. She hadn’t seen them for weeks now. They asked her for lunch to discuss the wedding with her which she found odd because what does she know anything about weddings. Then again maybe the chief bridesmaid should know about the planning.

‘Hey, you guys. I hope I didn’t keep you two waiting,’ Charlene sat herself down on the chair next to Nicholas after giving him a peck on the cheek. Joey didn’t mind at all knowing were both of them stand.

‘No, not at all,’ Nicholas smiled adoringly staring at Joey while talking to her. The waiter came and took their order and scattered away when they gave it to him.

Charlene sighed at the cute couple. She wanted so bad that she and Edison were okay now. She missed him. ‘So what was it you guys wanted to talk about?’ she forced herself to as before she cried out loud. They made her miss Edison even more.

‘Well, since you are the chief bridesmaid,’ Joey started. ‘We thought since you never been involved in a wedding, you might want to be a big part in ours.’

Charlene froze. Did she hear right? They want her to be a big part of the wedding? ‘Excuse me?’

‘It’s all Joey’s idea,’ Nicholas declared.

‘Nicholas!’ Joey exclaimed, outraged that he’s putting it all on her. ‘You’ll stand by my side in better and worse, I see!’

‘What?’ he clearly didn’t realize his own mistake.

‘Guys,’ Charlene said in between Joey’s glares and Nicholas’s confused look. ‘I appreciate your jester but as you said I was never involved in a wedding and it’s true. I don’t know anything so I can’t play a big part.’ She shrugged her shoulders.

‘But…’ Joey began but Charlene held her hand up.

‘I wish I knew something I could do but I suck at this part. Why do you think no one asked me to play any part at all?’ she said the last bit as a joke.

‘Okay,’ Joey gave up. ‘Since you are the Chief bridesmaid you still got to arrange a hen night and everything, though.’

‘That’s easy. Watched lots of movie to know what I have to do.’

‘Really?’ Joey was amused.

‘Really. Borrow one of Nicholas’s clubs for a night. Then bring all your friends that I will steal your phone book to find out. Then I’m going to hire a stripper to strip with the song ‘It’s raining men’. So what do you think?’ she asked grinning widely when she finished. Then wiped the grin off her face when Nicholas spat out his drink when the word mention ‘stripper’. ‘Was it meant to be a surprise?’ she asked the gaping Joey.

‘Charlene!’ Nicholas yelled.

‘What?’ Charlene said, confused.

‘What?’ he repeated. ‘Tell me you were joking when you mentioned ‘stripper’. Coz you betta!’ he threatened.

‘But in the movie they always hire a stripper,’ she defended herself.

‘Are we in a movie?’ he asked. She shook her head. ‘Then find something different.’

‘I don’t know,’ she pouted.

‘How about this,’ Joey cut in. ‘I’ll help you. And the wedding planner can help you as well’

‘Okay,’ Charlene happily took the offer.

Their order came and they dug in. All the while Joey was telling Charlene all about what happens in a wedding and how to organize it. After they finished their lunch they got up to leave.

‘Charlene,’ she heard her name. She flinched as she realised who it was.

‘Edison…’ she turned to face him not meeting his eyes.

‘Can I speak to you?’ he asked looking from both Joey and Nicholas.

‘We’ll be heading off now,’ Nicholas said at last. He sensed that something was a miss.

‘Yeah, anyways I’ll call you tonight about the plan,’ Joey said catching on what Nicholas was saying. They quickly rushed out of the restaurant not waiting for a reply.

Charlene finally met his eyes. He motioned her to sit down. When they were both seated, chairs next to each other, he spoke. ‘These last two weeks were hell for me,’ he cut to the chase. He was dieing inside to tell her the great news but he had to wait. ‘Please don’t avoid me no longer,’ he begged.

‘I wasn’t avoiding you,’ she denied. He stared at her. ‘Okay, okay, so I was. I’m sorry but I thought that I would do it again if I see you. I promised my father that I would be – you know – until the wedding night.’ She blushed at just mentioning it.

Edison chuckled. ‘You look so cute when you blush,’ he commented. ‘That is one of the reason I like you.’

‘I really missed you,’ she whispered shyly.

His smile froze. He gazed at her eyes as if searching for something. ‘Do you really mean that?’ She nodded. ‘I missed you more than you missed me,’ his eyes gleamed, teasingly.

‘Yeah, yeah! We will be like this forever! So I will cut to the chase.’ Edison lifted an eyebrow in question. She laughed and kissed him fully on the lips.

‘Man, this is another reason I like you!’ He deepened the kiss.

Someone cleared his or her throat. They pulled apart and looked up at the uncomfortable Kenny. ‘Sorry, didn’t want to interrupt but I just wanted to remind you,’ kept his gaze on Charlene, ‘about the charity party.’

‘Can’t you go?’ Charlene begged.

‘No!’ Kenny yelled, outraged at the thought.

‘But…’

‘But, nothing! As if I’m going to go! Anyways you were the one invited not me,’ Kenny calmed down a little.

‘I’m going with you,’ Edison declared.

‘What?’ both Charlene and Kenny shrieked together in unison.

‘If you are going to this party then I am too,’ he explained.

‘Trust me you don’t want to go,’ Kenny began. ‘It’s a g– ’

‘It’s going to be a great party,’ Charlene cut in. She looked daggers at Kenny threatening with her eyes saying if-you-tell-I’ll-kill-you.

‘I’m going now,’ Kenny gulped and rushed off.

Charlene turned to face Edison and planted a huge smile on her face. She didn’t know why she was thinking of getting back at Edison because there was no reason to but she didn’t mind playing with him just for now.

She and Edison parted their way, they went back to work with him promising to pick her up at seven. When the time finally came she was all ready. She waited for him on the lobby. She wore a sky blue strapless dress with a scarf tied around her neck and white knee boots.

‘Wei, you ready, beautiful?’ she turned around surprised that she didn’t hear him come.

‘Yes,’ she was breathless just looking at him. He wore a navy blue tailored suit with purple shirt. ‘Me beautiful? What about you? Drop dead gorgeous!’

He chuckled. ‘Come on.’ He whooped an arm around her neck and guided her out of the building and into his car. They drop silently to their destination. Charlene had already warned him that he wouldn’t want to go there not letting on why but he refused to back out. She even told him the name of the club thinking he’ll know the place and back down. But did he? No-o. He was too stubborn. So she let him take her with a huge grin on her face but a guilty heart inside.

At the club Edison felt odd when they entered but he kept his smile in place not letting on. ‘Come on I see the host. The sooner we see him the sooner we can go,’ she rapidly explained and dragged him to the host.

‘What’s the hurry?’ he asked.

‘No reason.’ They stood in front of the host. ‘Jordan! What a party!’ Jordan hugged Charlene making him feel like ripping the guy in pieces. He stepped in forcing Jordan to let her go. ‘Jordan Chan, meet my boyfriend, Edison Chen’ she emphasized the word ‘boyfriend’.

‘Really?’ Jordan said. He eyed Edison up and down in total fascination. ‘Oh, my, don’t we have good taste? When you break up call me.’

Edison greeted his teeth at the last remark from the guy. Who does he thing he is? Charlene to call him when they break up? The guy was pushing it!

‘Will do,’ Charlene half promised. She then dragged him away from the guy whose eyes didn’t leave them. Phew, that was a close call, she thought with beads of sweat forming on her forehead. When she felt Edison tense up she guessed why. He probably thought that Jordan was flirting with her. He liked Edison and wanted to have him if they break up!

‘I am so glad that I came,’ he chirped. ‘This place is filled with mostly the guys!’

‘Purr-lease! Don’t even think that I will go with these guys!’ The way she said it made him think. She sounded disgusted. Not entirely disgusted but offended.

‘I’m not saying you will,’ he thought he should explain himself thinking she might have thought he didn’t trust her. ‘It’s these guys I’m worrying about.’ He was more like implying the Jordan guy.

Charlene laughed. He didn’t find it funny that guys would go after her. He found it terrifying. He didn’t want to lose her to anyone. Not when he had something to tell her next week. He just wished that Wednesday would come sooner.

‘These guys wouldn’t look at me,’ she rolled her eyes and sashayed her hips through the crowd and sat herself on one of the empty four empty chair around a small round table. Edison watched her hips in admiration. She walked like a model even though she was short. She acted like she was tall. He liked that about her. He followed her and sat next to her examining the place.

‘Would you like a drink?’ he asked.

‘I’ll have mineral water with a slice of lemon.’ He left her side but kept looking back watching if any guys’ walks up to her. But fortunately no one seemed to be. He got to the bar and waited to get the bartenders attention.

‘Can I buy you a drink?’ He forced his gaze away from Charlene to a guy seated on a stool. The guy smiled at him and shifted himself near him. Edison shook his head and turned back to Charlene. She stared at him. He thought her eyes gleamed of guilt but he ignored that. ‘Ow, come on,’ the guy persisted.

‘No thanks,’ he answered. His mind didn’t register the fact that this guy was actually trying to chat him up using the ‘can I buy you a drink’ method. His whole attention was on Charlene that he also didn’t notice many guys eyeing him up. He saw the way Charlene was feeling uncomfortable on her seat. He caught the bartenders’ eyes and motioned him over. The bartender walked over, drooling at the sight of him.

‘Hi,’ the bartenders’ voice was husky. ‘What can I get you?’

‘Two mineral water with a slice of lemon, please.’

‘Are you sure that’s what you want?’ the bartender purred. He leaned on the bar giving a cheesy grin.

‘Yes,’ Edison gave the bartender an odd expression then rotated around to see Charlene. Her expression was now horrified. He thought something might have happened to her. As soon as the drinks were put on the bar he threw some bills on the bar and grabbed the glasses. He didn’t see the sad expression the bartender gave, the lust expression the guy at the bar gave or half the other guys who tried to catch his attention. But all his attention was on Charlene and he rushed to her. ‘Are you okay?’ he asked, worriedly.

‘Yeh-es, I’m fine,’ she gathered herself together and gave him a smile. What had she thought bringing him here and not telling him the whole truth? She hated herself. She was actually jealous that guys were eyeing him up. She was crazy to get jealous. She was horrified that two tried to flirt with him but he still didn’t know where he was! ‘Urm… I don’t feel all right actually,’ she acted. ‘Can you take me home?’ She touched her forehead just for the effect.

‘We just got here,’ he whined.

‘But I don’t feel well,’ she pouted. He stared at her for a while and she thought he was going to protest but he gave in at the end.

‘Okay, let me finish the drink first.’

She sighed of relief. She wanted to get out of the place before he found out. She didn’t want to embarrass him. As he drank she saw many guys attention were focused on him. She linked her arm around his and rested her head on it, all the while looking from guy to guy silently saying his-mine.

He drained his glass and helped her up, still linked arms they walked out of the gay club.
