Charlene was at her office going through some files. Even though it was her birthday she still came to work. Her party will be tonight. She just loved her idea, barbecue at the beach. The only thing that was keeping her from being happy today is Edison. He went to Canada on Monday, and hasn’t come back. He won’t be back till tomorrow.
It was lunchtime but she was too upset to go out to eat. She chose to stay in. her income machine buzzed. She ignored it. She had told no one to disturb her. She even kicked Kenny out. He has to do his work outside of the office with Vanness.
Irritated that Vanness kept buzzing her she stabbed the button with her finger. ‘What?’ she yelled.
‘Char…’ Vanness said in a shaky voice. ‘There is a bouquet of flowers downstairs that need your signature.’
‘Tell Bernice to sign it,’ she said. She let go of the button shaking her head that Vanness wouldn’t think of that.
The income buzzed again. She gave it a murderous look. ‘Vanness do you know the words do not disturb?’
‘They are being persistent that you sign it personally,’ he explained.
She got up angrily. Even though she was the type that doesn’t show her anger she didn’t care today. It was her birthday and she could do anything she wants. Especially when Daisy left the business for couple of days. She wanted a holiday and she’s going to Canada. She went downstairs; she stepped out of the elevator and stalked to the reception.
She was about to yell when she saw the delivery guy holding the most beautiful roses she had ever seen, even though it was white. She was awestruck by it. The bouquet was arranged perfectly that she could not explain. The delivery guy handed over the bouquet, which she put on the reception desk. He handed her a card and a form to sign then left.
She ripped open the white envelope and took out he small white card. She didn’t notice that her six models, Kenny and Vic watching her in interest. Bernice was watching as well.
She read the card out loud without thinking, ‘WILL.’ It read. She looked at the word in confusion. It was in capital letters but that’s all. She turned it over where she read, ‘you give white roses to strangers. This reminds me of the first day I laid my eyes on you. It might not have gone great but I still felt the electrician flow through my blood. Love E.’
She covered her mouth. This was so sweet, she thought. He was being sweet. And people say he isn’t romantic! She smiled. Then finally she noticed that she gathered a crowd.
‘Hey you guys,’ she innocently said.
‘From a boyfriend?’ Bernice asked raising her eyebrow. Charlene just smiled. She smelt the flower inhaling the scent.
‘Delivery for Miss Choi,’ Charlene turned around so did the others. There stood a different delivery guy this time holding a yellow bouquet of flowers. She felt light headed. This was more beautiful. The delivery guy left after she signed the form. She held the envelope in her hand.
‘Come on open it,’ Ruby excitedly said.
‘Quickly read it,’ Miriam said. They all began to persuade her to open it.
She ripped the yellow envelope open and took the yellow card out. ‘YOU,’ she read. She turned it over to read the other side. ‘You give yellow roses to a friend. After we got to know each other we became just that. Love E,’ she read it. She was nearly in tears. He wrote Love E. He really loved her. She hugged the flowers.
‘That is so sweet,’ Barbie said.
‘Yeah, makes us guys look like losers,’ Kenny muttered.
‘Who is this E character?’ Bernice asked in total interest.
Charlene was shocked. So were the others. They have never seen Bernice interested in anything. ‘Edison,’ she replied.
‘He is so romantic!’ Vicki cooed.
‘Why can’t you be like him,’ Ruby pouted at Kenny and hit him on the stomach.
Kenny was going to say something when a girl called out, ‘Delivery for Miss Choi.’ Everyone looked at the girl holding a bouquet of pink roses. Everything was forgotten only the delivery girl holding the gorgeous flowers. She was running out of words to explain them. The girl handed over the flowers proudly and with a little envy. Charlene signed the form and the girl forced herself to leave not before handing her a pink envelope.
Ripping the envelope she took out a pink card. ‘MARRY,’ this made her confused again. She turned over the card. The others waited impatiently for her to read it out loud. ‘You give pink roses to someone you like. When we were friends I began to like you. I know you like me as well. I could name everything I like about you but it will take years. Love E.’
All the girls in unison said, ‘he’s so romantic.’ They sighed dreamily.
She was confused. What is he saying? Is he telling me he only likes me? Wouldn’t he love me? Another delivery guy interrupted her thought.
‘Delivery for Miss Choi,’ he called out. She waved her hand motioning him to come to her. He walked up to her and handed over the red roses. If she thought the others were beautiful she doesn’t know how to describe the red roses. She found it odd that there were nine – no ten she counted – roses that were actually made with plastic. It was like a box with a thick plastic stem. When the delivery guy left leaving her in a daze she realized that she was drooling. Gathering herself together she opened the red envelope. She took out the red card.
‘ME?’ She turned over card and read, ‘you give red roses to the one you love. After liking you it grew to loving you. I know that this is what you have been waiting to hear. I love you, always and forever. Love E.’
She was crying now. The others began to talk at once. She looked at the bouquets of roses that were in a row on the desk. It took all the space. Just then her mobile rang. They went silence now. She flipped open her Samsung V200. ‘Wei,’ she choked out.
‘So will you?’ she heard Edison’s voice.
She ignored his question and said, ‘Do you really love me?’
‘Of course,’ he confidently replied. She cried of joy. The others crowded around her wanting to listen in. ‘So will you?’ he asked the question again.
‘Will I what?’
‘Have you read the cards properly?’ he asked.
She nodded. Then realized that he can’t see her. ‘Yes.’
‘The ones in caps? Read it in order it came,’ he ordered her.
She happily obeyed. Kenny held her phone for her so she can use her hands to hold the cards. ‘Okay,’ she said over the phone. ‘WILL… YOU… MARRY… ME?’ It didn’t register in her mind what she read out loud until a moment later. ‘Omg! What?’ she shrieked. The models screamed excitedly. Charlene was too shock to say anything else.
