‘Hello,’ Charlene said, as cool as possible.
‘Cut to the chase. I know you’re just like Daisy,’ Michelle snickered.
‘I beg you pardon,’ Charlene exclaimed. ‘Besides I got the impression that you wanted Daisy to be in my place.’
‘Daisy?’ Michelle laughed bitterly. ‘As if! I only was mentioning her to scare you off! But that wasn’t working.’
‘Well, I’m not like Daisy. Trust me on that!’ Charlene was going to go around Michelle but she stepped back in her view.
‘Not so fast!’ she said. ‘How much will it take for you to leave my brother alone?’
Charlene gasped. She couldn’t believe her ears. ‘Listen, I don’t need your money. Now excuse me please.’
‘I’ll let you off now. But bear in mind that you’re here all weekend and that weekend my family and I will make sure it’s a living hell for you!’
‘Oh it’s a family thing?’ Charlene asked. ‘I’ll look forward to the weekend.’
When Michelle stalked off Charlene let out a deep breath. Only to inhale back in when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She jumped. She twirled around. It was Jay.
‘Hey, beautiful,’ he said.
‘You startled me,’ Charlene said tapping her chest.
‘Sorry. Why is a girl like you doing with my brother when you can have a guy like me?’ he frowned.
Because he doesn’t think his all that! ‘Because I think fate wanted me and him not you and me.’
‘Well, I think fate was playing with us. Now you found me forget Edison.’
‘And I think you shouldn’t talk about your brother like that,’ she absolutely didn’t like him talking about Edison like that.
Then it hit her.
That weekend my family and me will make sure it’s a living hell for you.
He was testing her. Two can play this game, she thought.
‘You know I think you’re kinda cute,’ she stepped closer to him. ‘Why not forget Edison?’
Jay stepped back gulping. ‘What do you have in mind?’
‘Sshh, Edison doesn’t have to know,’ she huskily said. ‘If you won’t tell I won’t.’
Charlene stepped closer to Jay and perked her lips as if to kiss him. Jay went pale.
‘Charlene,’ she turned around to face Edison who gave her a dark expression. She smiled and turned back to Jay. ‘What’s going on?’ Edison came and stood next to Charlene and looked from one to the other.
‘Nothing,’ Jay said but too quickly making Edison narrow his eyes. ‘I have to go.’ Jay fled. He was feeling so guilty.
Charlene laughed. ‘So what was that?’ Edison accused. ‘Were you flirting with my brother?’
Charlene was still laughing, bent down and holding her stomach. ‘Yes,’ she managed.
‘Aren’t you ashamed at all?’ Edison shrieked. ‘How could you do this to me?’
Charlene stopped laughing going all serious at what Edison was saying. ‘What?’
‘You even admit that you were flirting with Jay!’
‘What the…?’ Charlene couldn’t believe her ears. For the second time she was stunned. ‘You don’t trust me? I was only playing. Your family is in a pact trying to break us off. I was just messing with Jay coz he wants to test me if I could be loyal. I was just pretended that I wasn’t! Gosh! You want me to trust you but when it comes to me you don’t!’
She stalked back up the stairs frustrated with everything. Half way up the stairs she was stopped by a hand gripping onto hers. She twirled around angrily.
‘I’m sorry,’ he began.
‘Well sorry don’t cut it! You’re marrying me in two months time and you don’t even trust me!’
‘I do trust you,’ he assured her. She sat down on the steps. He too bent down next to her. He sighed before carrying on. ‘Jay was always the ladies man. He got every girl he wanted.’
‘And you thought I was going to fall for him just like the other girls,’ she finished.
‘Yes.’
‘Well, let me tell you something. I’m not like any other girls. I wouldn’t fall for your brother even if I didn’t meet you,’ she acknowledged.
‘I guessed it when you started shouting at me,’ he smiled guiltily.
‘You deserved that. Now if you want forgiveness you have to do me a favour.’
‘I thought you already forgiven me,’ he replied.
‘It’s nothing big. I just want you to be out of my way when I’m flirting with your brother,’ she explained. ‘I just love it when I flirt with him. He’s such a chicken! And you say he's a ladies man!’
Edison chuckled. ‘Okay.’ Then, ‘Wait a minute… you can flirt with him but when it comes to me you don’t like it!’
‘That’s different. Jay’s safe but you’re too dangerous.’
‘That makes me so happy!’ he sarcastically said rolling his eyes.
‘Don’t worry it won’t go that far.’
‘Since we got five more minutes why don’t you flirt with me?’ he suggested. ‘You know… like… practice on me.’
Charlene gave out a loud snort. ‘As if!’
‘Why not? I swear I have no plans.’
‘Whatever! As if I’ll believe you.’ She stood up and descended the steps. She walked quickly with Edison in pursuit.
‘Wei! Stop running away!’ he complained. He ran to walk side-by-side with her and wrapping an arm around her shoulder. She giggled. When they got to the dining room Edison let go of her and her smile was wiped out. They went serious and sustained themselves for a silent and ice on the air dinner.
‘So, is Michelle having a arrange marriage too?’ she bought up the subject while they were having dessert.
Mr. And Mrs. Chen looked at each other then Mr. Chen spoke. ‘It may be an arrange marriage but Michelle is now in love with her fiancé.’
‘Really?’ Charlene asked, amused. She didn’t look too much in love when she said she had to phone him earlier but she wasn’t going to bring that up.
‘Yes,’ Mrs. Chen firmly said.
Edison looked at her thinking why she was bringing that subject. Her eyes gleamed when their eyes met. He then knew she was up to something. He wanted to know what but he had to wait when they are alone.
‘Why isn’t he here then?’ she asked as innocently as she could also giving a sweet smile.
‘He’s with his parent’s celebrating with them,’ defended Jay. When she looked at him she gave a wink when no one was watching her. He slumped down on his chair whimpering. She silently laughed.
‘If they were in ‘love’ as you say,’ she shrugged her shoulders making the conversation like it wasn’t that important. ‘Wouldn’t they make it that they’re together?’
She felt a hand on top of hers. She looked down. It was Edison’s. He squeezed her hand. She moved her gaze up locking their eyes. He raised an eyebrow questioningly. She just gave him a trust-me smile.
‘When you see him you’ll know,’ Mr. Chen said clearly wanting to finish the conversation. She didn’t mind. So she moved to another one.
‘Jay!’ she emphasized his name. ‘What about you? Are you getting married anytime soon?’ She looked from Mr. Chen to Mrs. Chen then back. She was loving this. Maybe this was a good idea. ‘Or didn’t you find any suitable bride for him?’
‘Urm… Our Jay isn’t ready…’ Mrs. Chen quickly answered.
‘His kinda of a ladies man, isn’t he? You don’t need to find him a bride now, do you?’
‘Would you look at the time,’ Mrs. Chen gasped. ‘It’s late now. So if you’ll excuse us…’
‘Sure,’ Charlene said pretended to be disappointed. Mr. and Mrs. Chen left hastily out of the dining room. Edison suggested that they go to the lounge to talk over coffee. They agreed even though it looked like Jay wanted to object but one stern look from her he was rushing there. Wouldn’t she be a great sister-in-law?
‘What are you up to?’ Edison whispered in her ear while they sat down snuggling up on the two-seat couch. Michelle and Jay sat opposite them. To her surprise Michelle wasn’t looking at her like she was some piece of furniture but in a new light.
‘So who is this guy you’re marrying?’ she asked curiously.
‘Louis Koo,’ Michelle replied. Charlene saw the gleam in her eyes. She wanted to talk to her more about him but she was afraid.
‘Louis Koo as in the guy who owns Five Star Hotels all around?’ Charlene said.
‘Yeah,’ Michelle said wryly.
‘How can you love that guy?’ Charlene burst out, appalled. ‘His old!’ She was disgusted. The guy looked old enough to be her father.
‘Char, not Louis Koo the senior but the junior,’ Edison explained.
‘O,’ she said. ‘Well, Louis’s okay I guess. I didn’t think he was getting married since his with women after women. I don’t know how you can stand that! If Edison looked at another woman his – let’s just say a dead man.’
Michelle laughed at her joke. Edison gaped and then frowned at Michelle. He some how liked it when Michelle laughed. It was years since she did that.
‘If you look at another man I’ll kill him!’ he warned. When he finished Jay was already pale and he sniffled. No one seemed to notice him only Charlene. She put her index on her lips miming him to keep secret. He quickly looked away. Charlene then knew that he wasn’t a ladies man as they say.
‘Trust me,’ was all Charlene said. She leaned forward to Edison making it look like she was going to kiss him. ‘Take Jay with you, please,’ she whispered in his ear. She then pulled back and gave him a stern look. He nodded, even though he didn’t understand why.
‘Jay, let’s go I want to have a chat with you privately,’ he said standing up. Jay looked horrified. ‘What’s wrong?’
‘Nothing,’ he rapidly said. Edison grabbed Jay around his neck playfully and dragged him out of the room.
‘You know, Edison put his foot down when he didn’t want to marry Daisy,’ she began. ‘You could do.’
Michelle gave her a blank look first but Charlene just stared at her. Then Michelle let out a deep breath. ‘I can’t.’
‘You can’t?’ Charlene said, puzzled.
‘I can’t say no because I do love him,’ she shook her head, trying to clear her mind.
‘You love Louis? So what is the problem?’ Now Charlene was confused. Nothing was making sense.
‘Yes, I love him. It’s just that he doesn’t love me and I don’t want to marry him if he doesn’t want to marry me,’ tears formed in her eyes. ‘He doesn’t want to marry me.’
‘You talk to him over the phone, don’t you? What do you talk about?’ she now understands and wants to help her.
‘We pretend because of our family,’ Michelle said. ‘And we just talk of what we did that day.’
Charlene thought that was odd. She knew Louis from before. They weren’t best of friend but she did talk to him occasionally to know what type of guy he is. ‘Do you guys meet up?’
‘Yeah, every day,’ Michelle said clearly not seeing what Charlene is seeing. ‘For the reporters,’ she added.
‘Is he coming to the New Years party?’ she asked slyly with a plan already forming in her head. Michelle nodded.
