Chapter Fifty One ‘New Years Party’

‘Hey, gorgeous,’ an arm wrapped around her waist. She turned her head sideway to see Edison. He placed his chin on her shoulder. She mumbled something gibberish. She was weak by his cologne she closed her eyes. ‘So, what have you planned tonight?’ Charlene opened her eyes and gave him a what-do-you-mean smile. He just stared at her.

‘Okay, okay, don’t give me that look,’ she joked. ‘Now I don’t want you to go against this.’ He just gave her a plain look. ‘I’m going to get Louis to admit he loves your sister.’

‘And how do you know he loves her?’ he let go of her waist and rotated her around to face him.

‘Trust me I know,’ she said knowing well that he doesn’t think like her. ‘Please let me do this,’ she begged. ‘I know I’m doing the right thing.’ She gave him a puppy look and pouting as well.

He sighed looking away. Then he looked straight into her eyes, ‘If things go wrong don’t go on, it won’t be good.’ She cried out and kissed him, thanking him.

‘Don’t worry. Just trust.’

‘That’s what I’m afraid of,’ he muttered as they walked out of the guest room. They walked down the stairs where many guest were already there. ‘Just to keep my cool what is your plan?’

‘Now that would be telling,’ she said. She then went her separate to mingle with the guest. What she really wanted was to find Louis, corner him and find out if he really loves Michelle as her instincts tell her. An hour and a half of mingling though the party did she then found Louis who had just entered. It was only ten thirty, one hour and a half till the countdown.

‘Louis,’ she called through the think crowd hoping he heard her. He turned around when he heard his name and she waved for him to know whom it was calling him. He gave her a blank look; she knew he didn’t recognize her. ‘Hi, you probably don’t remember me but I’m Charlene Choi,’ she said when she was standing opposite him.

‘Oh yeah, I remember you. The manager of My Studio in America?’

‘Yes, but I was hoping you don’t say that around,’ she had forgotten he knew her as that. She just hoped that no one else finds out. ‘You know how they want to get appointments to My Studio,’ she joked, and gave a short laugh. She waited if he got what she meant because she couldn’t have him telling Edison that she was a manager in America. It would only cause problems and him finding out who she really is.

‘Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me,’ he laughed. She sighed of relief. Then covered it up with a laugh when he frowned.

‘So, I hear you’re engaged,’ she began the topic she wanted to talk about. ‘You know the way you’re with one woman to another, it’s like you don’t want to get married.’

She saw a glint of hesitation from him before he spoke which got her theory to be true. She just has to get a little bit more to go with it. ‘That’s just the press. They get the bad side of me,’ he defended himself.

‘Right,’ she said unconvinced. ‘If you don’t want to marry her you just have to say no.’

This was it, she thought. She’s going to find out if he really loves her.

‘I can’t,’ he paused. He scanned the room nervously. ‘I can’t say no, coz I do want to marry her.’

‘That’s good. Do you love her?’

‘Urm…’ he lowered his voice, ‘yes I do.’

‘Did you tell her you love her?’ Charlene asked as if it was the obvious thing to do. He shook his head. ‘And why not?’

‘Because I’m afraid she would throw my love back in my face.’ He carried on before she could interrupt. ‘She made it clear that she didn’t want our relationship to be more than an arrange one.’

‘Are you sure?’ Charlene asked confused. Why would Michelle do something like that?

‘Yeah,’ Louis let out a deep sigh.

‘Hold that thought,’ she told him. ‘I’ve just spotted someone I wanted was waiting for,’ she waved at the air pretended she was waving at someone. The crowd gave way for her to go by then swallowed her in. she was glad so Louise wouldn’t see her going to Michelle. She headed for the bar and sat on the empty stool next to Michelle.

‘I had just had a lovely chat with your fiancé,’ she said when se settled herself down.

‘Yeah?’ Michelle perked up interested what she has to say. ‘What about?’

‘Something,’ she paused to get the bartenders attention. She asked for a mineral water. She ten rotated around to face Michelle. ‘But one thing that caught my attention was that he says that you said,’ she made quotation mark with her fingers. ‘I quote “She made it clear that she didn’t want our relationship to be more than an arrange one”. Mind telling me why you said that?’

Michelle had to think about that for a minute. Then she said, ‘Oh, about that!’

‘Yes, oh that!’ Charlene mocked. ‘For my meddling to work I have to know every single details!’

‘Sorry’ she said looking all guilty. ‘It’s just that I didn’t think he’ll take it seriously. If I knew that I wouldn’t have said that.’

‘It’s okay. Now was there anything else you said?’ she had to make sure.

‘Not that I know of,’ Michelle said thinking at the same time. She shook her head, ‘Nope.’

‘I’m going to go back to him now. I want you to make yourself scarce. Go to the garden. It’s more romantic there,’ she instructed shooing her away off the stool.

Drinking her water with couple of gulps she spotted Edison surrounded by women. Michelle and Louis can wait, she thought. I have to save my man first! She stalked to his side and as gentle as she could she pushed one of the women off him.

‘Hey!’ the woman cried out as she was shoved away. ‘Who the hell are you?’

‘First of all, stay five miles radius away from my man,’ Charlene hissed. She wasn’t just talking to one of them but all of them. ‘Second, don’t touch my man and third stay away from him!’

‘Let’s dance,’ Edison said. He didn’t seem bothered by what was happening but was a little amused by the way Charlene was jealous. He was actually happy. He dragged her away from the women who were glaring at her and she was doing the same. He pulled her in his arm when they got to the dance floor and swayed with the music. ‘You were jealous,’ he mentioned, childishly.

‘I was not!’ she denied.

‘Oh, really?’ he said smiling at her denial.

Instead of coming up with an explanation she just said, ‘I have to go,’ she quickly said.

‘Not yet,’ he moaned. ‘Five more minutes.’

‘Two,’ she said giving up to his puppy face. ‘I’m definitely sure now that Louis loves your sister.’

‘And how are you sure?’ he asked, pleased with her.

‘I was talking to him just few minutes ago and he declared his love for her.’

‘Then why won’t he tell her that?’ he asked.

‘Sorry, two minutes is up,’ she pushed herself away from him and was going to walk away when he grabbed hold of her hand.

‘Not so fast,’ he said. ‘I want to warn you that Daisy’s parents are here.’

Charlene froze. She turned to face Edison. ‘You’re kidding right?’ she asked, fearfully.

‘Nope,’ he shook his head.

‘Which one are they?’ she asked knowing well she couldn’t do anything about it.

‘Over there by the Mosaic painting,’ he nodded his head to the painting. She followed his gaze two elderly couple. To her they looked like stuck up rich snobs and she wouldn’t like them even if she tries.

‘Right, avoid them like a plaque got it,’ she mentally told herself. She then kissed Edison. ‘Catch ya later. And one more thing, how’s the poem going?’ She knew that he was having a hard time trying to come up with one. He groaned. She made herself to Louis who was walking to the bar. ‘Wei,’ she called out.

Louis turned to face her. ‘I saw you talking to Edison so I didn’t want to disturb.’

‘Yeah? You were looking for me?’

‘Have you seen Michelle?’ he enquired. ‘I can’t find her anywhere.’

‘Are you going to tell her you love her?’ Charlene asked not answering him.

‘What?’ Louis squealed. He then smiled at the few people who looked their way. ‘What are you talking about?’ he laughed it out.

‘You know what I’m talking about,’ she eyed him. ‘You need to tell her before you go with the marriage.’

‘What if she laughs at my face?’ he inquired.

‘If you don’t say it how would you know?’ she questioned over his.

‘You may be right but I don’t know if I should,’ he whispered. ‘We’re friends which is the closest I get to her and if I say that I love her I might lose her.’

‘You may lose her if you don’t,’ she interrupted. ‘What if she is waiting for you to say what you feel for her? What if it’s to late and she leaves you thinking you don’t love her?’

That got him thinking. ‘Okay, I’m going to tell her.’

‘She’s out at the garden,’ Charlene said.

He was taken aback. ‘I didn’t mean now,’ he hissed, afraid about the whole idea.

‘Of course you have to say it now!’ she insisted. ‘Go, she’s waiting for you.’

‘She is?’ he said, bewildered.

Charlene couldn’t believe she just said that. ‘Urm… I mean is that… eh… I told her that you’re looking for her,’ she quickly made up.

‘Right,’ he said then made himself towards the garden. When he was out of sight she followed. She wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to see a romantic scene. Well she hoped it was romantic.

In the garden she hid behind a big oak tree. She was on her knees and poking her head out to see Michelle was sitting on a two-seat swing lost in thought were Louis found her.

‘May I sit down?’ he asked softly.

Michelle snapped out of her thought and looked startled to see him. ‘Erm… sure,’ she said uncertainly.

He sat down next to her. ‘I want to talk about something important,’ he started. ‘It may ruin our relationship.’ Michelle braced herself. Charlene could just about read her face in what she was thinking, will he say he loves me or will he tell me he doesn’t? He took her hand in his and looked into her eyes. ‘Michelle I know that our marriage was arranged but I don’t want to think that. I want it to be a love one.’

Michelle gasped. ‘You… You…’ she stuttered too shocked to say anything.

‘I have to say this,’ he desperately carried on. He clearly took her stuttering as in she doesn’t want him. ‘I can’t keep it in me. I love you, Michelle. I’m sorry if you don’t want to hear this since you did say that you didn’t want more than friendship.’

Michelle was too stunned to speak. Say something! Charlene shouted in her head to her. Tell him you love him too. Louis got up from the swing. He was taking her silent as no. No, don’t get up! Charlene was digging into the tree trunk with her nails.

‘Charlene, what are you doing here?’ Edison called from behind. Charlene quickly grabbed Edison from his hand and pulled him behind the tree. ‘What the…?’ he found himself on the grass next to her. She covered his mouth a shushed him. She peeked her head out to see if Louis or Michelle heard but they were kissing.

‘There kissing?’ she jerked her head back. What had happened? ‘You!’ she poked her index finger on his chest. ‘Why did you have to come? Now I don’t know what happened.’

‘Sorry,’ he quickly apologized. He knew how she wanted to know how her meddling worked.

‘Charlene,’ both her and Edison looked up to see Louis and Michelle towering over her.

‘I can explain why we’re here,’ she began.

Louis chuckled and Michelle giggled. ‘Don’t worry,’ Michelle interrupted. ‘We came to thank you for making us tell each other what we mean to each other.’

‘If you hadn’t,’ Louis carried on. ‘We wouldn’t have known and waste our life in the dark.’

‘Glad to help,’ Charlene smiled proudly at what she accomplished. Louis and Michelle went off hand in hand. ‘I’m so good!’ she commented herself.

‘Yeah, you’re good. I bet you’re good kisser too,’ he enquired.

‘I know I am,’ she laughed.

‘You finished helping their relationship, help ours now,’ he requested.

‘There’s your bro left,’ she pointed out. ‘I need to be in his good book as well.’

‘No you don’t,’ he groaned knowing well that she would do it anyway.
