Chapter 54

~Selina~

Chapter Fifty-Four ‘Selina’

‘May I help you?’ Selina asked giving a smug look. Charlene then knew why. The boat incident. She was flirting with Jay. She looked bad in Selina’s book.

She thought of another way of getting her to spilling the truth, being the bad girl. ‘Yes you can,’ she toughly said. ‘You can help me by telling why you been flirting with my man.’

‘Which one?’ Selina cocked an eye brow and smirking. ‘Edison or Jay?’

Charlene hesitated a little. ‘Jay of course,’ she yelled.

‘His your man now, eh? The way he was going on calling you names I wouldn’t have guessed,’ she sarcastically retorted.

‘You can laugh all you like but what makes you think he’ll go for a gal like you? Look at yourself, you think you’re a super model or something?’ Something gleamed on Selina’s eyes just for a second. Charlene smiled when she knew she was getting somewhere.

‘Just get lost,’ Selina barked.

‘Until I know you won’t get in my way,’ she said with out a flinch.

‘Whatever.’

She made a move to go then looked back. ‘I know you from somewhere,’ she said in confused.

‘Really?’ Selina said in panic.

‘Yeah, you remind me of someone long ago.’

‘I don’t think so,’ Selina quickly said. ‘I would have known you too.’

‘Hold on what’s your name again,’ she stopped to think. This was all pretence to her. ‘Wait! I’m getting it,’ she hit her head with the palm of her hand, frustrated that she couldn’t remember. ‘Getting it…’

‘I’m sure we didn’t meet,’ Selina was getting desperate now. ‘I’m busy now, you have to leave.’ she was in an act of closing the door but Charlene put her foot on the way.

‘You’re Seilina Lai!’ she shouted. ‘Omg! You’re the model!’

Selina cried out as she was found out. She tugged Charlene’s hand making her lose her balance and tumbled inside the room but she caught herself before she fell flat on her face. ‘What the…?’

‘Ssshhh,’ Selina hissed. She let go of her hand and closed the door shut not before checking if anyone heard. Closing the door she leaned on it taking deep breaths. ‘Listen, I swear I will not look at Jay but you have to promise you won’t tell anyone who I was.’

‘No,’ she plainly said.

‘What!’ Selina shrieked. ‘I said I won’t be on your way when you’re courting Jay.’

‘Do you know who I am?’ Charlene quietly said.

‘No,’ Selina said slowly as she didn’t know what to answer.

‘My name is Charlene Choi Reeves,’ she said but she got a blank expression from Selina. ‘My Studio?’ she offered wanting to get her to remember her. ‘You were my first model? Do you remember?’

Selina’s face changed from blank to realisation. ‘Char?’ she whispered. ‘Omg!’

She frowned. ‘What happened to you?’ she said.

‘So many things happened to me I just can’t explain,’ Selina sighed. ‘It’s all too complicated.’

‘Try me,’ she challenged.

‘First of all did you mean what you said about Jay?’ she couldn’t help but ask.

‘Not a bit,’ Charlene laughed. ‘I can’t believe he didn’t recognise me. Did I change?’

‘Yeah. You were pretty before but now you’re gorgeous.’

‘You think so?’ she said cheekily. ‘To tell you the truth I didn’t recognize Jay myself until earlier on. I mean, I always seen him everyday lurking around the boutique waiting for you. Man, three years is a long time.’ She sighed.

‘Yeah, I know. To think people can change in three years. We were the three musketeers when you first opened the boutique. Your first ever boutiques now look at you, you got boutiques all over the world!’

‘Hey, I’m surprised too,’ she defended herself because the way Selina was saying was like she was accusing her. ‘I didn’t know I was going to go big.’

‘So, tell me why you won’t tell everyone who you really are?’

‘You wouldn’t understand.’

‘Try me,’ Selina repeated what Charlene said earlier. ‘Even when you first opened it you pretended you were the manager. Sooner or later the world will know you own My Studio.’

‘Well, I’m hoping it will be later,’ she tried to make it a joke but no one was laughing nor smiling. ‘Don’t worry I’ll tell everyone but not just now. I need time,’ she assured.

‘You had plenty of time,’ Selina pointed out. ‘Okay, if you say so,’ she gave up trying to persuade her when she gave her a stern look. ‘I didn’t tell anyone before and I won’t start now.’ She sighed. ‘It’s a shame though – okay, okay I’ll change the subject,’ she quickly said because Charlene was now glaring at her.

‘Good idea,’ Charlene agreed. She went and sat on the bed with Selina following after her. ‘Let’s get back on track of why I’m here. Why did you disappear without a trace? What happened?’

‘I changed. I didn’t want to model any longer,’ she tried to explain but clearly Charlene wasn’t taking that as an excuse.

‘If you didn’t want to model that was fine but what about the disappearing act?’

‘I didn’t disappear I just moved,’ she was going to stop at that but Charlene stared at her making her carry on. ‘You remember my stepfather right?’

‘Yeah, the weirdo,’ she sighed. ‘Man – no offence or anything – I hated him.’

‘None taken,’ Selina said. ‘I didn’t like him either,’ she paused to gather her wits before carrying on. ‘Here goes. When my mom was alive it was ok. He couldn’t do anything to me but just take my money from me. Every time I used to come home with my salary he would be there waiting for my check. I then asked you to give me cash instead of check.’

‘I remember, I thought it was kind of odd.’

‘Yeah well, I would keep enough the cash and give him the rest. My mom didn’t know anything about it,’ she defended her mother even though Charlene thought otherwise. ‘When my mom died he went worse. I wanted to quit modelling and take up the managing that was up in the boutique. But my stepfather thought otherwise. He wanted me to carry on modelling.’

‘Did he do anything to you that he shouldn’t have?’ Charlene slowly said.

‘No,’ she quickly replied. ‘But when he was drunk once he did. I didn’t think much of it coz it was forgotten. He thought I was my mother. It was once and never repeated.’

‘I believe you,’ Charlene assured her. ‘What happened then?’

‘He began beating me up.’

Charlene gasped. ‘The jerk!’ she shrieked. ‘If he wasn’t dead now I would have gone there and gave him some beating myself.’

‘Then his lucky his dead,’ she joked. ‘The beating was too much for me that I ran away. I couldn’t tell anyone even you just in case he finds me.’

‘If you tried I could have helped you.’

‘I know,’ she admitted. ‘I could have told Jay as well. He would have been there for me. I was too ashamed by the bully that I couldn’t tell anyone.’

‘I was really bombed out when you went without saying,’ she sadly said. ‘You were like an older sister to me.’

‘I’m sorry.’

‘Me too,’ Charlene whispered. ‘His buried now so why didn’t you come back?’

‘I don’t know. I wanted to. I wanted to go to but what I said to him he wouldn’t take me back.’

‘Are you sure about that?’ Charlene asked.

‘What do you mean?’ she said confused. ‘Of course he wouldn’t want me back. I lied to him to get him to hate me.’

‘Yeah but he still didn’t forget you,’ she told her. ‘And come on he was eyeing you up this morning.’

‘He was?’ Selina smiled to herself.

‘He must really love you.’

Her smile was wiped out of her face replacing by a frown. ‘Even though, how would he take me back just like that?’

‘Why not try tonight?’ she suggested.

‘Tonight is so soon,’ Selina made up an excuse.

‘Oh come on, just try. You got the rest of your life to get him back.’

‘What if he doesn’t want me back?’ Selina told her fear out loud. ‘What if he has someone else?’

‘Trust me, I don’t think he had anyone after you,’ Charlene laughed. The word ‘virgin’ was on her mind. ‘Didn’t you hear me in the morning?’

‘Yes,’ she blushed.

‘Now get dressed and I’ll see you up at the deck,’ she ordered and left before Selina could protest.

‘Where have you been?’ a voice whispered in her ear from behind.

Charlene was on the deck. She turned her head slightly to see Edison. ‘Somewhere,’ she said.

‘Jay is over there you know and you’re all the way here,’ he pointed out. ‘I think I’m definitely going to win. So, baby, I might as well start practice flirting with you. You look hot tonight,’ he huskily commented.

‘Oh I haven’t given up yet,’ she told him. ‘And your flirting, per-lease it’s not even trying,’ she added.

Edison felt that he made the biggest mistake – betting with her. He got the feeling that she had already won. And there is no way of backing out. ‘Erm, honey,’ he laughed bitterly. ‘You know you’re my favourite girl right?’

Charlene gave a short laugh. ‘I’m the only girl you have.’ Then, ‘There better not be another girl,’ she threatened.

‘Trust me there won’t,’ he quickly replied.

‘Good,’ she rotated around to face him and went into his arm for a kiss. ‘I love you.’

‘Love you too, babe.’ His attention then caught something else. ‘Hey, babe I’m thinking maybe I will win.’

‘Yeah?’ she asked, amused. ‘How?’

‘Coz that bro of mine is going off with that boat driver,’ he said cockily.

‘Really?’ she didn’t sound shock at all which made him think that it was her plan.

‘Okay,’ he sighed in defeat. ‘Who is she and what makes you think you won?’

‘That’s Selina Reis was known as Selina Lai, the super model,’ she answered proudly

‘The one that broke his heart and left him?’ he shrieked, not too loud to cause a scene.

‘The one and only,’ she replied. ‘Before you jump to the wrong conclusion – as you always do – there is a great explanation about the whole thing.’

‘I do not jump to conclusion,’ he burst out.

‘If you say so,’ she rolled her eyes.

He ignored her last comment. ‘And what’s the explanation?’

‘Tell you later.’

It was midnight when Charlene and Edison saw Jay and Selina together, laughing and talking at the back of the ship. They were too into there conversation that they didn’t see them come in front of them.

‘Hiya you guys,’ Charlene called out. The couple turned their attention to them. Jay looked mortified but Selina looked happy to see her.

‘Char,’ Selina began. ‘You are the best!’

‘Wait a minute you two know each other?’ Jay asked confused.

‘Yep,’ she and Selina said in unison. Then when they realised they talked at the same time they laughed. ‘I can’t believe you don’t recognize me,’ Charlene continued.

‘I would have guessed he would recognize you too,’ Selina carried on. Edison frowned. Clearly the two women were in mischief, Edison thought to himself. ‘I mean the way you kept teasing him everyday.’

‘What are you two on about?’ Jay asked, bemused.

‘I’ll give you a clue,’ Charlene said. ‘Freaky Geeky Jay.’

Jay froze. ‘No one but that Clueless Char calls me that!’ he exclaimed. Then he realised that Charlene was actually Clueless Char. ‘No it couldn’t be…’

‘You betcha, it’s me!’ she laughed.

‘Why am I the only one who doesn’t know what’s going on?’ Edison asked.

Charlene and Selina laughed at him and at Jay. They then clued the guys in of everything from 3 years ago to now.
