Chapter Fifty-Nine ‘Leaving’
She knew she had to get out sometime. It was Monday afternoon and she still didn’t go to My Studio. The press was no doubt ranking it. She sat outside on the beach with newspapers scattered around her. Yes, they were of her. She should have known they would print it out first thing in the morning. She had already called the International Security to hire herself a bodyguard who was standing just few feet away from her. The way they were on Friday she wasn’t going to take her chances. They would sure swallow her up with question after question and won’t let her go.
She read the newspaper title again.
‘Charlene Choi Is Ah Si?’ HK Times
‘Owner Of My Studio Is revealed At Last!’ HK Today
‘Charlene Choi Wins Business Award Of The Year!’ HK Business
‘Charlene Choi Locks Her Manager Daisy Lin For Money Scandal’ Hello HK
‘Will Charlene Choi Now Answer Our Curiosity In Why She Hid Herself?’ HK Advertiser
‘Lovers Spat? Charlene Choi Owner Of My Studio Not Only Reveals Itself But Also Quarrels With Fiancé’ Hush
She threw the last newspaper away from her in disgust. She wanted to hide from the world. She knew she was a chicken but she didn’t want to answer anything right now. She had to clear her head before she could carry on with her life that was soon to be exposed to the world. That is why she had planned that she will go off tonight somewhere that no one will find her. Her family was calling her as well wanting to know answers.
She got up and ran near the water. She screamed on top of lungs out to the ocean letting all her inner self out. She screamed till she could no longer then fell on the ground trying to catch her breath.
‘Miss Choi,’ her bodyguard, Leon said from behind her. She looked up. ‘If you want to leave for My Studio we should go now.’
‘Okay,’ she said. She walked inside the condo. There was a suitcase by the front door. She had got Leon to pack her things from her apartment. The press were already there wanting to get hold of her there. They don’t know of her condo, which was the safest place right now, until they soon find out.
Picking up her suitcase she opened the door. Leon was right behind her. She walked to her car and climbed in. She then drove to My Studio. Over there was enough press parading outside. She parked the car just a meter away from the crowd. Leon got out first then came around to her side and opened the door. Taking her arm he guided her through the crowd, which became wild when they saw her. With a lot of effort they made it inside in one piece.
Inside was another thing she didn’t want. Co-workers stopped in their tracks and stared at her. Then some tried to hide their face and gossip. Holding her head high she walked to the elevator and then up to the third level. She forgot she was meant to go up to level fifteen. Too late to turn back, she walked up to Vanness’s desk.
‘Hello,’ she said. There was no cheerfulness in her voice.
Vanness, who was typing away and hadn’t noticed her come, jumped. Then he gathered himself up and looked at her trying not to look stunned. ‘Charlene, what are you doing on this level? We moved you things up at level fifteen as you instructed.’
‘Well, I just wanted to say sorry about the other day,’ she said.
‘Don’t bother. I know what you were going through wasn’t easy,’ he responded quickly.
‘Is Kenny here?’
‘Yes, his inside the office,’ Vanness’s gaze moved behind her.
‘My bodyguard,’ she thought she should explain herself. ‘Why don’t you two get acquainted?’ She then headed inside the office closing the door shut. Kenny was behind her desk. He was pretended to do some work when she came. When he heard her voice he had rushed to her desk and sat behind it. ‘You can stop pretending,’ she told him. He gave up pretended.
‘It took you long coming here,’ he pointed out.
‘Yeah,’ she sighed. ‘Anyways the reason I’m here is because…’ she paused to see if he was listening. ‘You were saying you wanted to be the manager of this place.’
‘I was kidding,’ he cut in.
‘But I’m not,’ she said seriously. ‘I want you to start now. I know you’ll run it great since you know more of the company than anyone else.’
‘Where are you going?’ he asked getting the feeling that she was leaving. And he was right.
‘I’m going away for a month to clear my head and you know…’ she hoped he understood.
‘Don’t run away,’ he began.
‘I’m not!’ she rushed in. ‘I just need to sort out my head before I lose it.’
There was silence for couple of minute. ‘Fine, I’ll do it,’ he agreed.
‘Thank you,’ she whispered.
No sooner did the door bang open and her models barging in. Her bodyguard was on their tail.
‘Charlene!’ they called out in unison.
‘We were waiting for you from morning,’ Cecilia said.
‘Yeah, what took you so long?’ Ruby got in.
‘I wish I could stay but I’m going now,’ Charlene said softly.
‘What?’ her models shrieked in unison. ‘Why?’
‘I just have to go. Please understand.’
‘Is it coz of Edison?’ Barbie asked already getting worked up.
‘If it is then we are going to sort him out!’ Vicki rolled up her sleeves to her blouse.
‘No!’ Charlene cried out. ‘Please promise me you guys won’t do anything to him!’ After a couple of disagreements they finally promised they wouldn’t touch him nor do anything to Edison. She left with lots of hugs from them. She was going to Nicholas’s penthouse to say goodbye to him. And if her models had plans to do something to Edison she was sure that he too would.
‘Char!’ Nicholas exclaimed when he opened the door to her. ‘Are you okay?’
‘Just woke up?’ she asked taking in his boxers and t-shirt and his tousled hair. The door opened wide to reveal Joey wearing an over sized shirt. ‘I take that back, just got out of bed?’
‘Heart broken and still got humor?’ he raised his eyebrow, upon hearing that her face went gloom. It wasn’t happy before but it wasn’t sad. She tried to hide her depression. ‘Hell, I’m sorry, Char,’ he quickly apologized.
‘It’s okay. I just wanted to say that I’m going away for a month and that I hope you don’t take my break up on him.’
‘Why?’ she turned to Gillian who was angry.
‘Doesn’t anyone have work or college or something?’ she asked. ‘It is a Monday.’
‘Why do you have to go away and he can’t be punished?’ Gillian was in tears now. ‘You are a loving person that deserves more than what you are getting now. He said he loved you. Is that what love is?’ she spat. ‘If it is then I don’t want any!’ She ran straight to her room crying.
Nicholas sighed. Charlene was taken aback. She didn’t know Gillian would take it to heart. And that wasn’t what she wanted to leave behind. She wanted everyone to support her. She made a decision to follow her to her room. ‘I’m going to go to her,’ she whispered. Her throat was already blocked with her tears that were forming. She lightly tapped the door.
‘Go away!’ came the response form the other side. She knew she wouldn’t get anywhere if she kept knocking. She turned the doorknob, which automatically opened. ‘I said go away!’ she shouted when Charlene entered the room.
‘Not before I talk to you,’ Charlene replied.
‘There’s nothing to talk about!’ she exclaimed. Gillian was lying down on her bed on her front. Her back was facing Charlene. Charlene walked over to the bed and sat herself at the edge.
‘So, you don’t want any love from my brother?’ she eased trying to soften the conversation.
‘How can you joke at this time?’ Gillian yelled, sitting up straight, accusingly. ‘I thought you loved him?’
‘I do,’ Charlene assured. ‘I love him but I can’t force him to forgive me or force him back in my life if he doesn’t want to.’
‘I want to kill him for doing this to you,’ she said.
‘Please don’t,’ she begged. ‘Honey, Edison just needs time like I do.’
‘But you are the kindest person,’ she whispered. ‘You help everyone when they don’t ask you. You help people to find their true love. But why is life so unfair? Why won’t they let you have your true love?’
‘Life isn’t easy,’ Charlene leaned forward and cupped Gillian’s face. ‘Don’t worry about me, sweety. Think about you education and about my brother. Don’t think about me too often, okay?’
‘But…’
‘Sssh,’ Charlene put her index finger on her lips. ‘Don’t.’
‘How long are you going for?’
‘Probably a month,’ she answered quietly. ‘I’ll be back, I promise you this.’
Gillian nodded. She suddenly hugged her. Both of them cried in each other’s arm. ‘You’ll always be my sister,’ Gillian said, few minutes later as Charlene was closing the door behind her.
Charlene took a deep breath outside Gillian’s room. She tried to gather her courage. Slowly she made her way to the front door where Nicholas was waiting for her. She hugged him and kissed him goodbye. She waved to Joey who rushed over to her to give her a hug.
‘Thank you for everything,’ she said. Charlene stared at her confused. ‘You got Nicholas and I together.’
‘I didn’t do anything,’ she said.
‘Yes you did.’
Charlene left with Leon to the private airport. Before boarding her private jet she looked back. She knew he wouldn’t be there but she just couldn’t help it.
‘Goodbye,’ she whispered in the air. ‘I love you Edison.’
Miles away at the dark cold mansion, Edison sat drinking beer and getting drunk. He thought he heard her voice saying goodbye. He grunted for thinking that way. His cell phone vibrated. He checked wearily, the ID caller to see whom it was. It was Eason.
‘Hello,’ he dazedly said.
‘Hey, mate! Are you okay?’ Eason asked in concern.
‘What is it?’
‘Charlene is leaving. She had just boarded the plane. Would you like me to follow behind?’
‘Where is she going?’ he asked sitting u straight.
‘She has a private island that she’s going to go and stay with a guy.’
‘A guy?’
‘I think it’s her bodyguard,’ Eason quickly replied.
‘Don’t follow her. You’re off the case now,’ he ordered. Then without a thank you he cut the line. He wasn’t in the mood for a friendly conversation. He wasn’t in the mood for anything.
His heart was bleeding and he felt he lost his heart. He felt his heart is going million of miles away…
…With her.
