Chapter Sixty-Two ‘Nicholas’s Wedding P2 – Rush To The Alter’
‘She is going to cancel the wedding, I know it!’ Nicholas told himself half in tears.
‘No she won’t,’ she firmly told him. ‘Because we are getting there, if our lives depend on it!’ She grabbed hold of him and dragged him out of the cab. ‘We’ll have to go on foot.’
‘It would take twice as longer,’ he moaned giving up all ready.
She was going to reply to his moaning when she spotted a shop selling motor scooters. ‘Let’s take a ride,’ she grinned giddily.
Nicholas looked at her in doubt. He then moved his gaze to where she was staring. His expression changed from surprised to excitement.
And they were off wearing a safety gear riding on a motor scooter. They were laughing and cheering at how lame there ride was. But it was the only best and fun way. Many people stared at them as they whizzed passed either amused or stunned at them. It wasn’t everyday that they saw two people all dressed up and riding a scooter!
It took them at least twenty minutes to get to the other side. When they got near the church they didn’t slow down. They were lucky that the church had a ramp as they rushed in barging in loudly making every heads turn in astonishment.
‘Are we late?’ she asked as she took off her safety gear. Nicholas was doing the same. He then rushed to where he was meant to be standing not caring at the questioning stares he was getting. He was here to get married and that’s all that mattered.
Charlene thought it was here queue to find the bride so they can start the ceremony. She found her at the back of the church panicking about the runaway groom along with Gillian. When they saw her they rushed to her side and bombarded her with questions. She explained everything.
Finally the orchestra played here-comes-the-bride tone. Charlene felt nervous but she tried and kept herself calm. Just then Sam, Stephen and Edison came out to their side. She froze on the spot. How could she have forgotten that Edison was going to be the best man? She scolded herself silently.
Sam took hold of Joey’s cousin who was one of the three brides’ maids and walked in with every step going with the rhythm of the orchestra. She panicked. She had the gut feeling that she would be walking down with Edison. She cried inside.
‘I’m walking down with you,’ she practically ordered Stephen than ask.
‘No,’ Edison cut in. ‘It was planned that I walk with you.’
‘Well walk on your own,’ she told him.
‘Guys,’ Joey begged. ‘Please don’t argue.’
Charlene shut her mouth as she looked at Joey. She was pleading with her eyes not to ruin this moment for her. She stood aside from Stephen and let him take Gillian next. She waited patiently when it was her turn. Then like an electric shock piercing through her when Edison touched she felt weakened.
‘You look beautiful,’ he whispered as they walked down with the rhythm.
She stilled for a second but because he had a firm hold on her arm she was dragged to walk with him. She kept silence not trusting her voice. It might give way that she was in an emotional state this very second. When they got to where Nicholas was standing, he whispered in her ear, ‘I need to talk to you after this,’ before letting go of her.
She took the words to her heart and was returned to her mind with millions of question in why. One of the questions was did he want to talk to her about the cancellation of the wedding? The entire questions were negative thinking. She smiled at Nicholas. He gave her a thank-you smile, which to everyone else would look like a secret smile.
And so the bride finally walked up with her father smiling and crying at the same time. Charlene was close to tears when the ceremony ended and the bride and groom happily ran down the aisle as everyone threw confetti at them. The brides’ maids and the best men walked down after them in order they came. Charlene was reluctant with Edison’s touch. And Edison was sad that Charlene didn’t like this at all. Gillian kept glancing at Charlene and Edison with an odd expression. Shawn was there behind watching Gillian in a dreamy way.
The photographs were taken outside the church with first the bride and groom. Then the brides’ and grooms’ family photos were taken. And then with the brides’ maid and best men photos were taken. At the end it was separate pictures. This all took more than half an hour.
It was then the reception that was taking place in a hotel. Everyone was entering the room. Charlene was walking slowly behind after she had a long chat with Nicholas’s family. She was stopped at her tracks by a hand gripping her to a halt on her heel. She turned her face around in shock. Edison was standing there holding her hand with a blank expression. His words came back to her haunting her with her million why.
‘Can we talk now?’ he asked.
She looked around the now deserted hall way and then to the closed door to the ballroom. ‘Can’t it wait?’
‘No,’ he whispered.
‘It has to be quick,’ she didn’t want to sound she was giving in quickly. ‘I have to make a speech.’
‘It won’t take long,’ he promised. He then guided her through some doors and into a quiet small room. He closed the door behind them and sat down on one of the chairs that were around put in a circle. He patted the empty chair next to him for her to sit on. But she chose to sit opposite him, which only made him flinch in pain.
‘Go on then,’ she said when he wasn’t making any signs of saying anything.
‘What happened to you?’ he asked. She looked at him puzzled with his question. ‘Didn’t you eat at all? I feel really guilty for doing this to you.’
‘Well don’t be,’ she snapped.
‘I can’t help it,’ he said.
‘If that is what you wanted to talk about then I’m leaving,’ she stood up to leave but he held his hands up.
He cleared his throat. ‘I want to apologize for the way I had behaved when I found out who you really are…’
‘I didn’t lie of who I was,’ she cut in. ‘I just didn’t tell you that I was rich.’
‘Which I should have understood after the way I have talked about not wanting to marry someone richer than me.’
‘You don’t have to worry no more,’ she again cut in, ‘we’re not getting married anymore.’
He took deep a breath and then let it out slowly. ‘I was coming to that.’ He glanced at her to see if her expression changed but it didn’t. She was still giving the blank expression that he was famous for. He feared she didn’t love him anymore. ‘I know I have made the biggest mistake of my life for letting you go and I’ll live to that regret all through. But I wish you would forgive me and give us another chance.’
There was silence. She didn’t move. ‘No,’ she finally answered.
Edison’s heart broke into pieces. He let out a cry. ‘Can I never be forgiven?’ he asked as tears fell down his cheek. It was for the first time from when he was a kid he cried. Never did he think he’d ever cry again. ‘I’m sorry for hurting you but I too was hurting.’
He wasn’t the only one crying. She too was crying. But her sobs were louder as his was silent. ‘I don’t know how I feel now,’ she explained through her sobs. ‘I only feel the pain and I can’t take it.’
‘Maybe I don’t deserve a second chance but would you at least think about it before giving it your final answer.’
She cried deeper. ‘I…I’ll…think about…it,’ she promised.
He then took something out of his pocket slowly. ‘Happy Valentines Day,’ he whispered. He handed her a small present. She didn’t want to take it. He took hold of her hand and placed it there. She stared at it. ‘Opened it,’ he pleaded. She did as she was told. When she opened it she gasped.
‘I can’t take this,’ she said holding the small crystal angels. She remembered back when she wanted this.
********************************Flash Back*******************************
(Setting: Inside Edison’s parents mansion on Sunday night)
She wanted to make him do something irrational. After all this is a bet. They were watching TV in the living room that night after they had their dinner and everyone was upstairs getting ready to go to sleep. She had hid the remote and made Edison into a human remote. She was having a great time.
She had told him to change the channel again. When he came back to sit down leaving it to a program. It was showing priceless antiques. She was fascinated at what the host was showing. The screen was zoomed in to crystal angels. It was no ordinary angel. It was absolutely beautiful.
The host then explained where this crystal came from. Fifty years ago a very poor man named Alec Chan fell in love with a very wealthy woman, Diana Chung. She pretended she was nobody. She too was in love with him and thought that if she told him who she was he would leave her. So she kept her real identity a secret. But she couldn’t keep the secret too long because he found out. He did as she feared leave her. Alec was devastated for making a mistake of letting her go. He didn’t think she would take him back so he didn’t make a move to try. For ten years they hadn’t seen each other. Until one day they bumped into each other and Diana confronted him that if he loved her enough he would have looked through her money and background and loved her the same. He then hearing this told her that he knew he made a mistake and he made her something that represented their love, a boy angel and a girl angel holding hands and staring at each other with a loving smile. They were both holding in their other hand half a heart that represented that it was their heart. It was made out of crystal that he made by his hand.
She was crying at the end of the program. It was so beautiful and it reminded her of their relationship. She didn’t want Edison to leave her. She didn’t want to waste ten years of her life. She wanted the crystal. It was just right for her.
‘Why are you crying?’ he asked concerned and worried.
‘I want that crystal!’ she cried. She knew she was being childish but she wanted it because it may have represented Alec and Diana’s love but it too represented her and Edison’s. She knew what it meant. No matter who they are they are the same boy and girl they met before. The same people. The half heart was theirs giving it to the other no matter what.
Edison on the other hand didn’t understand. He was too confused at why she would want something like that. He hugged her tightly as she cried in his arms.
**************************End of Flash Back******************************
‘I can’t take this,’ she said it a little more firmly.
‘Why?’ he said. ‘I want you to have it. It was what I was going to give you anyway.’
‘Because you don’t know what it means,’ she answered.
‘I do and I don’t want to waste ten years of our lives waiting for one of us to speak up. I wouldn’t be able to live without you. You mean the world to me.’
She was stunned that he took the effort to track this down and then find out what it means. ‘I really need to think about everything,’ she responded. ‘I need to know if our relationship is going to last in the future.’
‘But take the present.’
She nodded not wanting to argue anymore. She was too weak for that. She put the crystal in her small purse. He took her in his arms. Both of them cried in each other’s arms for couple of minutes before Charlene pulled back. She slowly made her way to the door and opened it.
‘I love you,’ he called out. She didn’t turn. She stood there stilled before running out crying more. She bumped into Leo on her way out. Edison was right behind her.
‘You okay?’ Leo asked. She nodded wiping her tears. Leo’s gaze moved behind her to the stilled Edison. ‘Are you sure?’
‘Yes,’ she croaked. There was an uncomfortable silence with Edison and Leo glaring at each other. ‘We should get inside,’ she suggested, she couldn’t take the silence.
Leo didn’t say anything but took her arm and guided her inside the ballroom. She didn’t turn around in case she cried again. She needed to think this through before making up anything. She didn’t want to get back into the relationship again and then he’d break it off after another argument if they have any in the future.
Edison fumed with anger. If it were possible steam would have been coming out of his ears. He didn’t like that guy who was with her. Who does he think he is? He thought angrily. Charlene didn’t need that guy. Did she?
He shook his head firmly and followed behind. The whole reception was a torture for him. He kept watching Charlene and she was always with Leo. She made a speech. He could tell from her voice that it was hard for her. After that it was dancing.
He stood up and walked to her table. ‘May I have this dance?’ he asked holding out his hand.
She looked at him shocked. ‘You don’t dance,’ she said.
‘I only dance with the woman I love,’ he declared. She looked at Leo who shrugged his shoulder. She placed her hand on his. He guided her to the dance floor. ‘I don’t think I mentioned that you look beautiful,’ he said as he put one hand on her waist and the other holding hers.
She didn’t say anything. She looked anywhere but him. They moved with the beat.
‘I noticed that you’re quieter than before,’ he didn’t give up making conversation. He wanted badly her to talk to him.
‘I was in my island for a month and had no one to talk to but Leo,’ she responded.
‘Who is he, anyways?’ he asked frustrated.
‘My bodyguard,’ she glared at him.
He was going to say something but shut his mouth. They danced silently. He was whole again just holding her in his arm. She then left him on the dance floor when the song ended.
The cake was being cut later. And then the bride and groom finally left. Joey threw her bouquet at Charlene. She caught it and put a fake smile to assure she was okay. Nicholas and Joey took her at a side and had a deep conversation with her. He was close by enough to hear that they were thanking her for everything she had done. It was then that he was allowed to leave.
He didn’t stop to bid anyone goodbye. He left in misery. Not before watching Charlene gets in the car with that guy. Did he not have a chance with her anymore?
